For additional reference, here are some of his 9/11 truther Tweets. He has now allegedly reversed his position on 9/11. Will he renounce his view on vaccines and climate change denial?

I suppose it goes without saying that Oliver Wendell Holmes lived before vaccines became common. I also suppose that’s really not the point here, but after reading all that I need something I can onto. I think I got dumber. Argh, I applied for a writing job with HuffPo earlier this year.

2 Eigth Immortal  Sep 4, 2014 8:01:31pm

By the way, Gus didn’t include an example here, but Stallworth is also a HAARPS nut. As in , HAARPS caused 3/11.

I was in northern Japan on 3/11. If you click the link on my username you’ll see my story written on my personal blog. In other words, I take that HAARPS shit very, very personally.

3 lostlakehiker  Sep 4, 2014 8:19:52pm

Justice Holmes was saying that the health of the public overrides considerations of personal liberty. And then he was going a step further and saying that that included something like hereditary health.

A bridge too far. But he was right about compulsory vaccination itself. It was perfectly fitting and reasonable that the public in general be inoculated against smallpox. And they didn’t then have the understanding of chain reactions and epidemics to really confidently know that you could manage just fine with a few percent not vaccinated, especially once almost everyone was immune because of either having had the disease or because of having been vaccinated.

But suppose smallpox were somehow to escape the little bottles into which it has been driven, and a slew of cases began popping up in the US. We’d have to have mass inoculations again. This mortal enemy of all humanity doesn’t deserve any breaks at all and we should not give it any. Take no chances would have to be the watchword.

re: #3 lostlakehiker

Quite Concur. The problem with any sort of pandemic requiring mass vaccination is that nowadays any such vaccination campaign will encounter resistance and refusal. And in many parts of the world (the US included) that resistance is going to have a violent component.

Now, overcoming violent anti-vaxxers could be done in a smart and savvy fashion if there were time, but in a pandemic situation those needing to end the resistance will be time-poor. So negotiation and compromise will be abjured in favor of heavy-handed solutions that make for a higher body count than if there hand been time to talk.

The Lesson: The time to make sure that most people understand the reality of vaccines is now. Don’t let anti-vaxxers gain strength today, because the price of that strength will be measures in corpses in the future.

What the hell were they thinking hiring him? And I think I saw Charles say it downstairs and I agree whole heartily with him that the anti-vax movement is one of the most dangerous movements. Cracked had one of its photoplasteis today about technological improvements and it showed the mortality decrease in certain diseases since vaccines. I also as a highly functioning autistic resent autism being used as a tool to attack the validity of vaccines.

I could rant for days about this shit. What these scared stupid people don’t seem to understand is that if it weren’t for the rest of us being vaccinated their precious little Tiffany or Duncan wouldn’t have any immunity to anything. The little outbreaks we’re seeing in isolated areas would be a picnic with rainbow ponies compared to what would happen if vaccines were banned.

I blame Oprah and Jenny McCarthy in large part for this latest wave of bullshit. Oprah for giving the nitwit McCarthy a platform to sell her fucking book and making her some sort of Mom Spokesmodel for the anti-vaccine movement. I knew the second I read that book she was full of shit, it’s too bad a lot of other people didn’t too. She used her son’s autism(which, wonder of wonders wasn’t really autism, but a seizure disorder that halted his development. Once that was under control he caught up and was magically “cured”) to re-launch her career and make money off putting her name on false cures. I loathe her and she’s never really had a consequence for the damage she’s caused.

I’m afraid this movement of stupid has already taken hold. It would be nice if Our Idiot Media wouldn’t give these people the time of day. So thanks Arianna, for this buffoon and Andrew Breitbart, and the other stinking turds you’ve left behind on your way to the bank, thanks SOOO much. (((grrr)))

I didn’t think I had any respect at all for Greenwald, but that tweet lauding an anti-vaccer climate denier as “always smart,” and praising his hire actually managed to deepen my disgust of him. I didn’t think that was possible.
As for HuffPo, I’ve never expected much from it since AOL bought it. I feel bad for any legit journalists still associated with HuffPo. Stallworth’s hire puts them on par with Weekly World News, esteemed publishers of the Bat Boy story.

Her book about her son’s autism would have actually been good IF she had stuck to one topic- the effects of having a child with a disability on her marriage to her boy’s father. The vast majority of marriages don’t survive that, hers included. That part was pretty spot on and very true. The rest was nauseating. My MIL gave me that book and I swear I must have thrown it at the wall a half a dozen times or more before I managed to finish. I threw it away rather than pass it on to anyone else or donate it to the library.

She’s now married to Donnie Wahlburg, Mark’s brother. She’s all about Jenny, if it brings her attention, she’s there. Just. Yuck.

40 Backwoods_Sleuth  Sep 6, 2014 10:06:14am

hahahaha…

EXCLUSIVE: Benny Johnson, the BuzzFeed “viral politics editor” who was fired for plagiarism in July, will start Monday as National Review’s social media director, a new position. Rich Lowry, editor of National Review, tells us: “Benny made a terrible mistake. But he has owned up to it and learned from it. He’s a talented journalist, with obviously a lot to contribute. He knows he’s joining a storied institution at NR, and we look forward to his helping us carry on our mission across all platforms.”

Even a few years ago, “BuzzFeed Benny” might have been locked out of the journalistic academy forever. But two factors combined to give @BennyJohnson a surprisingly quick shot at redemption, using a pillar of conservative media as his onramp: 1) a youthful digital fluency — “I love you internet :),” he tweeted during the online firestorm over his clumsy copying; and 2) the Iowa native’s red-state instincts, which had contributed to longtime mockery of him online.

His new charge: giving NR maximum reach across social media and digital. Benny will remain in D.C., and will start by giving advice and running NR’s Twitter and Facebook accounts. Over time, he’ll do more creative work of his own. Benny is quite savvy about the digital ecosystem, and has a real shot at notably moving the needle for NR.

Gohmert!!!

Fox News Insider:
Gohmert: Intel Agents Were ‘Scared’ Into Keeping Quiet on Benghazi

He recalled a House briefing several months after the attack in which an intelligence official said there was no one injured in Benghazi that was hospitalized at Walter Reed near D.C.

Gohmert said he had personally visited Walter Reed to see someone who was injured in the attack and ended up calling out the official. He believes that official was “fed false information” and believes that many intelligence officers have been forced to keep quiet about what happened.

So they were cleverly hiding him at Walter Reed where no one would ever think to look for wounded U.S. personnel? Uhh…Ok? How does “guy in hospital when I was told there wasn’t” lead to “intelligence officers forced to keep quiet?”

Meanwhile back in the real world…

Fox’s New Benghazi Special Airs Old News

What Fox failed to mention was that the CIA officers and contractors present in Libya during the attacks were previously interviewed by Congress in private testimony before a House intelligence subcommittee. This testimony destroyed the myths that anyone had been ordered to “stand down” and that a speedier response would have saved more lives.

A December 2013 Associated Press report on this testimony cited Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA), “who heads a House intelligence subcommittee that interviewed the employees,” to explain that the CIA personnel were fully aware there would be no air support:

He explained that the lack of air support was clear to all CIA employees working in Libya because of a 2011 CIA memorandum sent to employees after NATO forces ended their mission in support of the Libyan revolution.

[…]

One contractor testified that he shouted repeatedly over the agency’s radio system to his CIA security boss that they should request combat aircraft. But the security chief explained to lawmakers that he ignored his subordinate’s demands because he said he knew that no combat aircraft were available for such a mission, Westmoreland said.

The testimony revealed that there was a delay in the CIA response team departing to the aid of those under attack at the diplomatic facility in an attempt to round up additional support for them from a local Libyan militia, and that “[s]ome CIA security contractors disagreed with their bosses and wanted to move more quickly.” Westmoreland told AP that “he believes this disagreement was the source of allegations that the CIA ordered security personnel to ‘stand down’ and not help the people inside the diplomatic mission.”

In other words Fox’s “groundbreaking new revelations about Benghazi” are just more recycled faux outrage over events that were already well known and previously investigated.

We attended a baby swimming course with a mother who could not bring herself to immerse her baby’s head underwater to get it used to the sensation.

A total lack of self confidence and fear of doing anything to her baby that seemed to “hurt” it, despite the obvious benefits.

And the pseudo science then preys on these people by offering them some justification.

It’s like the right wing “journalist” circle of life:

You plagiarize or say/do something clearly racist or inappropriate, get called on it by the public and media, then either get fired or resign, then give some time for things to cool off and then immediately you line up a job at ANOTHER right wing outlet. Lather, derp, repeat.

There absolutely was a time when plagiarism was a sin that would basically blacklist you from the profession, just ask Stephen Glass.

But these right wing sites don’t care. No morals, no ethics, no integrity, Just a seemingly endless supply of gullible fools eager as ever to get their hate on and a wheelbarrow full of money to go with it.

As for Stallworth’s experience in writing stories, he cited two pieces that he’d done for the lefty website Think Progress — one on Michael Sam and NFL “distractions” and another on Robert Griffin III. According to Stallworth, that’s the extent of his published archive. […]

If I remember, I think they let him slide due to the guy he hit not being in a crosswalk. I guess that is weighed a lot in Florida.

What always got me is he saw the guy in time to hit his lights to flash, he could have been on his brakes to whoa up too. That he admitted it and was found drunk at .12 and with a fairly high THC reading in his blood, you’d think in a law and order state that would be extra tough. Yet, id didn’t seem to matter.

Christables is funny. But FFS it’s so sad that churches feel the need to become that huge. It’s all about the money with those places, anything else is secondary, if it’s important at all.

I live in an area where there are both large churches and small everywhere. You can’t go more than a mile without driving past one. I’d say almost half of the small churches have food pantries and other community services. The big churches? They offer schools that are in no sense of the word free or open to the public. No community outreach, and big buildings in use only on Sundays. Big difference.

Gah, my desktop computer is down, my Macbook Pro’s touchpad & mouse aren’t working, the new replacement desktop machine my boss ordered for me won’t arrive till next Friday, and the inexpensive Dell laptop that I ordered yesterday—and for which I paid extra for “guaranteed” delivery today—is still stuck in the fulfillment process at Amazon, so now I have to rely solely on my iPad & an ancient, dusty IBM ThinkPad running WinXP. Everything takes me 10x longer than usual.

Oh, and did I mention that FedEx screwed up the two other non-tech deliveries I was supposed to receive today? This whole week has been…

And it looks like the agita is going to continue into next week, so I guess I’ll mostly be in lurk mode for the next week or two, because once I finally DO get the new machines, I’ll have to configure a bunch of crap and then catch up with work projects. Grrrrrr. Now please excuse me while I go sit in the corner and throw myself a pity party.

I did some cartoons for a medical book about therapeutic massage. I didn’t know what that was going in, but the dialog of some of the characters seemed a bit off.

I looked up the author on Google and was horrified by what I saw. Among other things, this woman practiced aligning chakras and ear candling. What was really depressing was that she was (and still possibly is) writing for a major medical publisher.

When altar boys get minimum wage, robots will serve communion.

That may be…but they can’t be the commentator.

And they couldn’t just speed up a whole Catholic mass like I once did.

I skipped ahead missing the second reading (Epistle) to The Liturgy thus sparing the folks the priest going on after his Gospel Reading and sermon for the day. Dropped about 10-15 minutes in the process, everyone had communion, had the final prayers and then right out the door. Good Catholics always appreciate a quick mass. Oh, the priest had an extra few words after communion in his final offering to touch on a few things he wasn’t able to mention earlier.

I tried to get out fast too…but I had to change out of my robe with the alter boys and that’s when the priest caught up with me and read me the riot act! But, I didn’t lose the gig. I was a fairly good at the job. Did it for like a year or more for the morning school mass. Never made that mistake again either.

What do you expect out of a kid in front of the whole school and a bunch of parents in a huge, formal Catholic church first thing in the morning? Ahhh. 6th grade too…halfway through.

Nope, it’s another Win7 machine as the vast majority of the software I have is for Windows (not to mention that I often have to help our clients with stuff, and most of them are also on Windows). My boss does the whole virtualization thing, running Windows on her MBP, but I don’t like doing that—prefer to stay in one OS or the other so I don’t get confused with my keyboard shortcuts.

Trans: The ‘Roman’ and other Catholic rite churches in Europe celebrated communion as bread and wine until the plagues ravaged the west. Then they stopped sharing wine from a single large cup, and distibuted only the bread. Don’t know in detail what the eastern (Greek rite) churches did, but they seem always to have distributed bread and wine, sometimes by dipping. Since Vatican II reforms, Roman churches have distributed both species—bread and wine.

Actually, the middle ages didn’t know from contagion. They went the “in one kind” route because of the risk of spilling the wine — blood of Christ! — (and often still do, for the same reason). The eastern churches dip the bread into the wine and distribute it that way for the same reason.

In the first comment i noted that was ‘folklore’. Intinction is used in some RC parishes, sipping in others.

The wingnut meme is that the President “refuses to declare war on ISIS” I have also seen “the State Department refuses to declare war on ISIS!”

As per the Constitution only Congress has the authority to declare war, not the President and certainly not the State Department.

Besides which a formal “Declaration of War” is a legal construct that applies solely to sovereign nations. Declaring war on a terrorist organization like ISIS/ISIL is legal nonsense and utterly meaningless.

And so are the Republican and TeaPartyers in congress.

Funny. It appears as if Obama is content to simply massacre ISIS leadership and authorize strikes against them without declaring all out war and engaging in rampant jingoism,

Obviously, this is why he should be impeached.

Indeed, the “Global War on Terrorism” was anything but, it was a patchwork series of laws put in place to allow military mobilization and deployment overseas, but it was not a formal declaration of war. There hasn’t been one since WWII.

I’ll tell you what, I’m still (slowly) working my way through that book on the history of antisemitism and it’s really been quite the eye-opener. Not only because the scapegoating is so similar to what’s being used against Muslims nowadays, but also seeing how far back the roots of some of today’s attitudes reach.

Last night I was reading about Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. In documentaries—at least the ones I’ve watched—both Luther & the Reformation are shown in a mostly positive light. Weird, because Luther turned into a raging antisemite in his later years, something I was only very vaguely aware of (and I’m pretty sure I learned that here). Also, his whole attitude even before he turned to antisemitism was one of saving or “improving” the Jews, which immediately reminded me of Ann Coulter saying Jews needed to be “perfected”. SSDD

Had to be a wingnut, it fits with their twisted “sense of humor.”

When they stopped in front of a hallway mural to snap pictures, a school sentry, or security guard, who is white, inserted himself. Brandon and his family are black.

“Wait, wait, wait, hold on,” Brandiss Pearson recalls the sentry saying. Then the sentry turned Brandon to face the wall and lifted Brandon’s hands above his head on the wall, as if to be frisked, she said.

“And he starts laughing and says, ‘Now take the picture, he’s in the right position,’ ” Pearson recalled.

The “right position” for a young black male, you mean?

Here’s the 6 for $3.99 pack from Lifeway (the Southern Baptist Convention’s bookstore chain):

lifeway.com

Lifeway also has a bulk 80 for $19.99 set.

If you’re not a fan of Chiclet-style bread, you can get a more traditional cup and wafer from Christianbook.

christianbook.com

I also came across a trademark for prefilled communion cups and wafers, but I can’t find it now DARN.

Somehow this just doesn’t strike me as what Jesus intended when he said, “Do this in remembrance of me.”

re: #179 ausador

What makes a nation-state? On paper, I suppose it’s recognition by the UN or by other nation-states. But then, is the Republic of China-Taiwan a nation-state?

Another standard might be that there’s a community of people, a territory controlled by that community, a system of taxation and law, and its own armed forces. By that standard, the Confederate States of America was for a time a nation-state, and the Union was at war with it.

ISIS has territory, laws, a flag, revenue, and an army. If things were to ramp up, and the president were then to ask for a declaration of war, the Congress should not laugh the request to scorn.
