Good I hope! Tomorrow is the 5 day mark.

I drained juice (just a little) from the bowl last Monday - nothing since then.

Any further hints??

I only made it once, in my early twenties when I was working as a fish-cutter at a fancy seafood restaurant. Salt, brown sugar, fresh dill and lime slices. Did the press with two hotel pans, filled the upper one with ice.

Granddaughter 3 is an 12 yr old who is part of her AL town sports league cheerleaders. Someone had the neat idea that they should cheer at the middle school’s first pep rally last week. Trouble was, the cheerleader costumes don’t meet the school dress code, so there was a wild scramble in the stores to find leggings and t-shirts to wear under the sparklies.

The “shame suit” looks like what I wear every day I can (not sweat pants though). If it were me, I’d thank them and take it home. Since it appears it’s acceptable school wear.

I agree. I work at home so I rarely get dressed in real people clothes. My issue is the decision to inflict shame on a kid on their first day in a new school. That has always been traumatic for kids (even those who change schools often). Piling that on an already stressed out kid makes me want to punch an adult.

Is this the Bitch & Complain department?

I paid for the Bitch & Complain department and this looks like the right door, but the room is empty

Oh well.

I drove 2 hrs to get to a clients today so I can work on their server while nobody is trying to work. When I got here there were only 2 people and they promised to leave within a half hour, which they did, so things looked OK. I finished up some wiring while they worked and then hit the workstations to connect them to the new server in place of the old piece of junk they had. Using MS Server connector ran into errors because Windows doesn’t know shit about changed usernames and accounts in a network.

So I had to use each system just to see what the real account was and change the username back to the account name. Meh. It worked.

Then the connection app threw the profiles on the server but didn’t preserve any of the firewall settings. Something I was unaware of, so I tried to get Quickbooks to communicate with the server and load companies. it didn’t work, of course.

My solution was to open up ports on the server firewall and run a QB repair on each desktop. which seemed to work well, but it was slow going, and I haven’t eaten for 10 hours.

Now Simply Accounting is giving me the same bullshit but has no repair app and a long list of ports and programs that have to be allowed through the firewall.

I’m just going to turn the frikken firewalls off and call it a day.

Did I mention I haven’t eaten for 72 hours?

I read about the teenager who was (IMHO) slut shamed at the Florida high school. That “outfit” the school told the teen she had to wear would have been unacceptable at my high school (yeah, a Texas high school, graduated in 1978)—for the track pants.

IMHO the school did wrong here. My family moved from Northern California to suburban Houston in 1973 and it was a severe culture shock. I can imagine Miranda Larkin feeling very much the same way. There should have been some explanation here, not just GO PUT ON THE SLUT SHAMING SUIT. Heck, even my high school didn’t have a slut-shaming suit of clothes. All that happened was that you sat in the principal’s office until an adult brought you more appropriate clothes. Or, in the case of my brother, my mom would drive over, take him for a haircut and then return him to school. Every four weeks, like clockwork.

Ends with…

Drone warfare in Yemen and in Pakistan and in Afghanistan has shown it’s not always easy to say who belongs to a terror group, and who is a legitimate target, on the ground or in the air. If the U.S. continues the bombardment, it’s almost certain that the same questions will eventually arise. And if there are civilians killed, its unlikely CENTCOM will tweet about the videos.

Unlike ISIS who will Tweet and videotape the genocide of 1,000s.

These people are still clueless isolationists.

I just don’t understand the dudebro infatuation that the media seems to have with Stallworth’s hire just being the latest example. Those guys remind me of, and I am sure there is a lot of overlap, with the Ron Paul morons who were very loud, freeped all of the polls, ruined all of the blogs and debates and ended up bringing in at most 10% of the vote.

131 teleskiguy  Sep 6, 2014 7:48:31pm

re: #126 Dark_Falcon

I disagree with your proposition entirely, for two reasons.

One, the United States has a gun fetish problem. Tens of thousands of people are murdered with guns in the United States every year, far far FAR outpacing the gun murder rate of any developed nation. Gun murders may not have the numbers of tobacco deaths per year, but a gun can kill a human being instantly, tobacco deaths usually take a lot of time.

Two, I see the gun market as a niche market where the gun consumer is already well-informed of their choices in the marketplace. It would be like K2 Skis running ads for their products on TV, it doesn’t make sense.

I don’t understand why you think gun commercials are even necessary in a country in which guns are already easily obtainable. If the commercials were on during some cable TV hunting or outdoor sports show, I wouldn’t object. But placing them on broadcast TV for a general audience seems both pointless and dangerous. We already have too many guns in the hands of people who shouldn’t own even one.

You really don’t fucking get it, do you? We’re in a period in our country’s history where mass shootings and accidental shootings are at an all time high. A day doesn’t go by where we don’t read about some kid who accidentally kills another kid, or their parents, or some stranger, or they get killed because some ‘responsible’ gun owner is showing them his new purchase…and you’re fucking seduced by computer graphics of how easily a gun is broken down? And what’s worse is the fact that you yourself don’t own guns (because you can’t or won’t) and yet you think it’s critical that assholes everywhere are given full and easy access to them?

I’ve already received weather warnings from our good folks at the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, CO. Some of the higher elevations could get up to 2 inches ( ! ) of rain on Monday and Tuesday. They’re saying that where I live the chance of rain on Monday and Tuesday is 90%.

We don’t really need it. The ground is saturated from an unusually active monsoon season, and all the rivers are still running above average for this time of year. We’ll see!

Thank you. I’m good. The trouble will come down the road when I have to deal with my siblings over this stuff. They’ve been such jerks to my dad and his wife for the last x number of years, and so badly behaved last time he was hospitalized a year ago, that they’ve been cut out of the loop. Out of sympathy and loyalty to my stepmother, I’m not saying anything to them right now, but I will have to eventually. And I don’t know when. And then my stepmother might cut me out too, although I doubt it. Even though she’s sworn me to silence, I’ve caught a hint of realization from her that I’m going to have to tell at some point.

You’re in the thoughts out here.

Regarding the earlier El Nino discussion, current indications are that it will happen this year but it may be a weak to moderate El Nino centered further out to see than normal - not good news from the CA rain perspective. Unfortunately. (CA really only sees increased rainfall in strong, coast centered ones.) However, there are some other longer term cycles that may be shifting to indicate the possibility of rain in CA this winter. Fingers crossed.

To get back to the Stallworth hire and his views, I want to address one of his conspiracy claims about vaccines and pharma. There are certainly reasons to be skeptical about Big Pharma, or the whole system in general, but it doesn’t apply to the vaccine area. It’s a shitty business generally.

For flu vaccines, the companies have to determine (be told) which strains to target and design for each year. And the process to make the vaccines is pretty involved, it’s not like making a chemical (small-molecule) pill. They have to stock up inventories not knowing if it will be a big season or a small one (the predictions are not very reliable) where they are left with huge stocks unused and useless going forward.

There are few companies willing to get into the area, and even then only with agreements from big countries to buy (some) excess product. It’s actually a pubic health concern that we don’t have bigger pharma presence.

And as for childhood vaccines being a boom business, at 4m/yr kids @$50, that’s $200m, or a rounding error for the $600b pharma business in the US.

So shorter, Stallworth is full of shit and talking out of his ass.

Great post. Vaccines are not the huge moneymakers for the Pharmas that people seem to imagine. CDC looks at what strains are active in Australia in July (their winter) and other Southern Hemisphere countries to try to predict what will be active five months later in the US.

It is and has always been a crapshoot because flu viruses have always been so mutable.

More disturbing is Stallworth’s misunderstanding of how viral and bacteriological vaccines (live vs. dead) are used in infant and youth vaccinations.

My parents used to tell me how stunned and scared they were by the stories of other parents who had kids born only ten years before them (I was born in ‘56, the oldest of five) and how thankful they were that the polio vaccine had been found before they had their own children. The anti-vaxers have no idea the damage they are doing to *all* children.

Ignorant and selfish is no way to present yourself to your neighbors.

And don’t get me started on Stallworth’s position on climate change. As a member of the Curia of Bruce Sterling’s Viridian Movement, I can’t even begin to address the ignorance that that entails.

Agree completely with both of the above points.

Looking at the CDC’s price list for vaccines, the most expensive children’s vaccine was for MMR/Varicella (“Measles, Mumps, Rubicells” at $158), and most vaccines are of the “one and done” variety.

Compare that with a medication I’m on, Spiriva. Spiriva is a COPD medication that can cost up to $2,000 per month if you don’t have insurance; the company that makes it had sales of $4.7 billion in 2012 for Spiriva alone, and Bristol Myers Squibb reported sales in 2013 of Abilify of $1.7 billion in the U.S. alone.

Like you said, vaccines are a crapshoot. It’s the medications people need on a daily or regular basis that make the big money.

So today I have planned pulling the 5.5 horsepower lawnmower type engine that runs a 11 gallon per minute hydraulic pump in a vertical orientation off of my log-splitter and replacing it with an 8 horsepower horizontal shaft gas engine. I have to weld together an adapter bracket to mount the hydraulic pump and then re-plump the return line, as well as welding on an additional mounting plate to hold the larger engine. At some point this will allow me to upgrade the 11 GPM two stage hydraulic pump to a larger 16 GPM pump. Bigger pump means shorter log-splitting cycle times which means time saved, which means I WIN!

If women don’t find you handsome at least they find you handy.

Bob Dylan’s face on the side of a London telephone exchange box

Tracey Dunn spotted the face of Bob Dylan worn into the front of a London telephone exchange box.

Tracey, from Liverpool, who was visiting her sister in east London, said: “It was amazing - you can definitely tell who it looks like. It was obviously made by accident. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was a message from Bob, because he’s still alive.”

No nose art shot. It’s not the Memphis Belle since I don’t think it was a G-type with the chin turret. Odd that I skipped that shot since I did nose art on most of the bombers like the B-24 at a minimum.

The chin turret? Added those to the B-17 and B-24 in later models due to the fact that the planes had weak directly forward firepower and German fighters were purposefully making head-on attacks to exploit it.

Ah, the SR-71. Beautiful aircraft and it PWNed the USSR but good. Try as they might, the Russians could make the MiG-25 fast enough to catch the SR-71, and so the US once again had a viable manned recon plane that could make runs through Soviet airspace.

I tried to check the story out with the sources given, and found nothing. ZERO. ZIP. ZILCH. NADA. I did find the fallout on Finnish forums from the previous iteration of this story in Pravda (back in mid/late March) which basically had all the people (but one (maybe)) mentioned in the story denying they had ever written or said such tripe, even when wasted beyond belief.

Checking with my mom, I got a look to which I asked “WTF have you been smoking level, eh?” She responded “My son, the question is WTF have they been drinking, snorting, injecting, taken rectally and smoking - simultaneously.”

I find this a bit concerning, because Russia has been sabre-rattling about there being a “response” if the newest set of sanctions are enacted, and it is reminiscent of the situation shortly before the SHTF in Ukraine.

I just watched Wyler’s Roman Holiday a couple of days ago, and had read the Wiki on him.

It was my first time to watch that movie, if you can believe that. Maybe I saw it on the WPIX-TV 4:30 movie when I was a kid, but if I did see it, it made no impression on me then. What a delightful movie! Total fluff, but so well done.

Audrey Hepburn was a newcomer, and was supposed to have lower billing than Gregory Peck. But after several days of working with her, Peck asked that she have billing after him and before the title, because he predicted she was going to be a star.

re: #326 Gus

Turns out I have little in common with that pro-NSA crowd.

I saw an article that made a great case for breaking up the NSA’s jobs. Not by way of destroying the agency but by way of an apropriate division of labor. In that top paragraph, by way of context that’s foreign political espionage. We keep the military stuff secret, and put domestic work under the justice department, not secret.

Wired

…The way I see it, the problem is that the NSA has too many missions: a military mission dedicated to network attacks and political espionage, a law enforcement mission focused on individual bad actors across the globe, and a defensive mission devoted to protecting the nation’s information infrastructure…

…Take the NSA’s military mission. Spying on foreign governments properly belongs within the Department of Defense under US Cyber Command. These days, espionage requires offensive actions in cyberspace—for example, breaking into networks and installing malware. These NSA programs should be treated with the same sensitivity as any other military operation. Attacking a foreign computer network is potentially an act of war, and we should be very careful in choosing to do so.

But the NSA’s extensive domestic and foreign surveillance of individuals is an activity that is properly placed inside the Justice Department. There it can be subject to standard domestic law: the Constitution, the warrant process, conventional courts, and much less secrecy. These are mechanisms we have long used to protect ourselves while giving the police, for example, extraordinary powers of investigation.
