Benny Johnson, Fired From Buzzfeed for Large-Scale Plagiarism, Gets Cushy Job at National Review

Plagiarism? Who cares!
Media • Views: 37,360

Serial plagiarist Benny JohnsonThis has to be the most pathetic story of the weekend, as Benny Johnson gets a plum job at National Review as their “Social Media Director” — just a month after he was fired from Buzzfeed for massive amounts of plagiarism.

I seem to remember a time when plagiarism was considered an unforgivable sin in journalism, but those days are obviously gone, gone, gone. Now it’s just one more item on the resumé. And this wasn’t just one or two or even 10 cases of plagiarism, but more than 40.

And the most ridiculous part of this depressingly absurd story: one of the publications plagiarized by Benny Johnson was — National Review. Yes, really.

Did any journalists take to Twitter to condemn National Review for this outrageous lack of standards? Nope. In fact, I saw numerous journalists doing the opposite, and congratulating Johnson on his excellent new job.

Welcome to the future of journalism.

UPDATE at 9/7/14 6:41:30 pm by Charles Johnson

To make the hypocrisy and craziness even more evident, in 2010 National Review published this: The Plague of Plagiarism | National Review Online. (h/t: @Gus_802.)

Leaving all partisan snark aside for a moment, this is a serious problem that bodes ill for our future. Respect for intellectual property is fading, and, along with it, the reverence for originality and drive for individual achievement that has animated American life and fueled American innovation for two and a half centuries.

UPDATE at 9/7/14 6:54:43 pm by Charles Johnson

It must be the season of the plagiarists — they’re back on the menu in Britain as well: Johann Hari Is Still Lying to You — Jeremy Duns

As the viral politics editor at BuzzFeed, Johnson was tasked with producing clicky posts on topics such as George H.W. Bush’s sock preferences and John McCain’s “adorable” first mention of Twitter on the Senate floor.

“Clicky posts” scoff at ethics.

Benny Johnson, in the minds of National Review’s editors, is a creature of the internet that agrees with most of their editorials.

We need a guy who does the Twitter a lot, and who can get more young people to our site.

Most of the conservative movement has lost all sense of scruples. They saw this guy put out to pasture by Buzzfeed and said to themselves there’s our internet guy. He’ll get all the Twitters to come to our website with I’m sure zero consideration for his past failings. He can do internet! is NR’s motivation.

William F. Buckley must be turning in his grave as to what has been done to the publication that he founded.

He spent a good portion of his later years there trying to clean up the hatred that infected the publication during its early years - yes, I realize that he fostered a great deal of this himself - most notably by the public firing of Pat Buchanan, and repudiation of the John Birch Society and neo-Confederate wings of conservatism, and put forth a policy of journalistic ethics. Nowadays, they openly embrace the bigots (only getting rid of the openly white nationalists when public scrutiny is too heavy) and stories based on fables and heresay are becoming the norm.

21 Gus  Sep 7, 2014 6:20:18pm
Technology is driving this change. We are living in the era of copy-and-paste scholarship. Ten years ago, kids started stealing music off the Internet. Now they are stealing term papers. How are they going to compete in the future, when, one day, they become America’s business leaders? They have not yet learned to think for themselves.

Ethical journalism should be accurate and fair. Journalists should be honest and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.

Journalists should:

[…]

- Avoid stereotyping. Journalists should examine the ways their values and experiences may shape their reporting.

- Label advocacy and commentary.

- Never deliberately distort facts or context, including visual information. Clearly label illustrations and re-enactments.

- Never plagiarize. Always attribute.

re: #71 Gus

The wingers’ use of the phrase “land grab” makes it seem as though the gov ripped the land out of the hands of honest yeoman farmers and miners. Much of the acreage not devoted to reservations or military use is in federal hands because nofuckingbody else wanted it at the time: there were plenty of places back then that were easier to log, easier to farm, or mine, or ranch. Now the kochsuckers have been told to refer to federally-held acreage as a land grab because someone, somewhere has decided that they can make a buck by fucking up everything on top of the ground to get to whatever-it-is to be extracted. May they all be impaled on splintery two-by-fours.

The 243 cases, from 2008 to 2014, include some where a single drilling operation impacted multiple water wells. The problems listed in the documents include methane gas contamination, spills of wastewater and other pollutants, and wells that went dry or were otherwise undrinkable. Some of the problems were temporary, but the names of landowners were redacted, so it wasn’t clear if the problems were resolved to their satisfaction. Other complaints are still being investigated.

Indeed, to the people who actually came up with Reaganomics and supported it, it’s worked beautifully. The .1% have made out like bandits and even with the Great Recession their wealth has only continued to grow. That the middle class has taken it in the arm is not a bug, it’s a feature. Voodoo Economics

JOHN CHANCELLOR, anchor:

Voodoo economics, that’s how candidate George Bush described candidate Ronald Reagan’s policy during the 1980 Presidential Primaries. Mr. Reagan is now Vice President Bush’s boss and the phrase is something of an embarrassment. In fact, Bush said this week he never said it, but the record rather vividly proves otherwise. Ken Bode has the story.

KEN BODE reporting:

It’s commonly believed that back in the Republican Primaries of 1980 candidate George Bush referred to Ronald Reagan’s economic plans as “voodoo economics.” Last night Vice President Bush was asked about that and corrected the record.

Vice President GEORGE H.W. BUSH: Well what I said back then it’s very hard to find—well actually let me start over, one, I didn’t say it. Nobody, every network’s looked for it and none can find it, it was never said, and I challenge anybody to find it.

BODE: Challenge accepted, lets go back to Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh April 10th 1980, George Bush.

Vice Pres. BUSH: So what I’m saying is that it’s, it just isn’t gonna work and its very interesting that the man who invested this type of what I call a voodoo economic policy

BODE: What was that again?

Vice Pres. BUSH: What I call a voodoo economic policy.

BODE: In this day and age you can’t go back and correct the record, somebody’s bound to have the tapes. This afternoon the Vice President’s office corrected the record one more time, last night in Houston they said the Vice President was only kidding. Ken Bode, NBC News, Washington.

I grew up in the mountains of Colorado. I still remember my first road trip through the American South vividly. The very first thought that crossed my mind when we crossed the Ohio River in Paducah, KY was “There’s a lot of trees here.”

The woods got thicker the further south we went. I remember long stretches of interstate highway in Georgia, Alabama, Missippippi, Louisiana, even east Texas just being kind of a tunnel of trees, real deep woods.

I’ve got the luxury of real wilderness close to my home. But I know I am the exception. I climbed my first mountain (Notch Mountain, 13,337 ft.) when I was seven years old, I have an affinity for wilderness. Maybe that’s why whenever a debate about wilderness and public lands comes up I vociferously defend wilderness and public land.

There is no universal metric for crime. What is illegal one place can be fully legal (even encouraged) in another locale.

It’s an extremely stupid idea, about federal “land grab”. One has to be intentionally, willfully avoiding history to claim “land grab”. [edited]

The entire concept of land ownership changed over time, and the need for large public spaces became pretty clear.

If one wants to talk “land grab”, the greatest land grab in history (that is, since the invention of writing) was the taking of three entire continents by European colonial powers in no less than three centuries.

This is probably the most enlightening thing I’ve read about LAW.

In India, the Pizza Hut’s hire people to whack at poor people with a stick who get too close to the restaurant. It’s illegal to drive in Saudi Arabia if you’re a woman. Alcohol is banned in a lot of Indonesia. Prostitution is somewhat legal in Holland. Cannabis is entirely legal in Colorado and Washington.

I’ve long been critical of our American penchant for making illegal certain behaviors over others when it is clear some very petty activity leads to serious incarceration.

I have also long thought that the “War on Drugs” had some pretty ugly subtexts, which have become clear in hindsight.

“Law” is a human invention. It is what we want it to be. Societies have come to different ideas about what ought to be punished and what is not.

At its best, a society seems to flourish when everyday people are protected from those who are against the group, but that is painting with a really broad brush.

For example - I am not harmed by someone wanting to smoke cannabis. However, if someone is high and drives a vehicle then that is a danger from which I wish to be protected. In fact, I am only tangentially harmed by addictive behavior of my fellow Americans. In the end there is often real ham, due to self-destructive behavior, as we all really do depend upon each other to keep our society going. But the idea of throwing people in prison just because they are addicted to a substance is about as stupid of an idea residing in our law that I can think of.

Burn and churn at Politico, the outfit created to stir up more than enlighten:

Rick Berke, Politico’s executive editor, abruptly resigns

[…]

But friction had been on display in the newsroom almost from the beginning of his tenure. Berke, according to several current and former Politico employees, tried to impose some of the values of the world he came from — where multiple editors might weigh in, demand multiple drafts, and shape bigger, more ambitious stories — on Politico’s fast-moving, reporter-driven newsroom.

In the era of gossip click-bait, actually having editors review stories appears to be out of fashion.

Republican-enacted voter suppression is working in Texas - to the tune of over one million registered voters.

Voter ID on Trial in Texas

In the Texas suit, testimony has shown that about 1.2 million eligible voters — including disproportionate numbers of lower-income, black and Latino voters, who tend to vote Democratic — lack a photo ID that would allow them to cast a ballot. Some never had the necessary underlying documents, such as a birth certificate; others cannot afford the time or money it takes to track them down.

The lawmakers who insist that this law is needed never bothered to come up with evidence of any voter fraud. One former election official testified that in-person fraud is “almost impossible to do.”

Texas says it has made it easier to get a photo ID by providing for a free “Election Identification Certificate.” Apparently, Texans haven’t gotten the memo: as of Friday, fewer than 300 people statewide had managed to obtain a certificate.

Keep in mind that in Texas, a concealed-carry permit is considered a legal form of identification, but a Student ID is not.

Also, a by-design difference between Texas Voter Registration and state-issued ID cards make challenges to a person’s right to vote easy to accomplish:
To wit (and both of these are defined by state statute):
State ID: First Name, Middle Name, Last Name
Voter registration: First Name, Middle INITIAL, Last Name
The Voter ID act states that both forms must match exactly, and if challenged by a third party can be denied the right to vote.
This tactic has already been used effectively by “voter watchdog” groups in minority neighborhoods.

Except for guns, what’s legal and illegal is approximately the same in all English-speaking nations. Punishment is where we differ — the Brits have a lot of supervised community service for misdemeanors, first offenses, etc, and sentences even for more serious crimes is usually shorter than ours. They certainly don’t have that “three strikes” crap.

In Norway, the guy who killed 87 people got 20 years (with the possibility of renewing for another 20 years), in much more generous conditions than any American prison would ever have.

When you get right down to it, human beings are nothing more than ordinary jungle beasts. Savages. No different from the Cro Magnon people who lived twenty five thousand years ago. No different. Our DNA hasn’t changed substantially in a hundred thousand years. We’re still operating out of the lower brain. The reptilian brain. Fight or flight. Kill or be killed. We like to think we’ve evolved and advanced because we can build a computer, fly an airplane, travel underwater, we can write a sonnet, paint a painting, compose an opera. But you know something? We’re barely out of the jungle on this planet. Barely out of the fucking jungle. What we are, is semi-civilized beasts, with baseball caps and automatic weapons.

Oh, and I finally figured out how to make 1Password do my bidding.

The trick is to establish one computer as your primary computer. Do all your passwords on that one computer. Once you’ve done that and established a dropbox connection, then go on to the other computers, establish a dropbox connection and then install 1Password. It will then import the passwords far more seamlessly than trying to do it piecemeal.

And once the passwords are all synched up, making sure everything is super secure gets a whole lot easier across all the linked computers.

At least now the computer passwords on my end are secure. Hope that the credit card and store data is protected with something a bit more complex than 12345.

Circular firing squads are fun.

Weekly Standard editor and professional up-failer Bill Kristol told a Morning Joe panel Monday morning that President Barack Obama would enjoy widespread bipartisan support for proposed military action against ISIS. (Though, true hawk that he is, Kristol added that Obama didn’t need congressional approval for what Peggy Noonan calls the boom boom boom.)

When asked whether Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) less-interventionist policies would be a wrench in the war gears, Kristol said nah.

“Rand Paul will be against it, and I think it will show how small that wing of the party is,” Kristol said. “I think it will expose the fact that he has his own views — he holds them pretty consistently, except when he dissembles a little bit — but the mainstream of the Republican Party is hawkish.”

Wash. state megachurch closes branches after founder is caught calling women ‘penis homes’

“Ultimately, God created you and it is his penis. You are simply borrowing it for a while,” Driscoll wrote under the name William Wallace II in 2001. “Knowing that His penis would need a home, God created a woman to be your wife and when you marry her and look down you will notice that your wife is shaped differently than you and makes a very nice home.”

“Therefore, if you are single you must remember that your penis is homeless and needs a home,” he continued. “But, though you may believe your hand is shaped like a home, it is not… And, if you look at a man it is quite obvious that what a homeless man does not need is another man without a home.”

Republican-enacted voter suppression is working in Texas - to the tune of over one million registered voters.

Voter ID on Trial in Texas

And yet somehow they claim to be the people supporting democracy and freedom.

Football Player Goes off on Ray Rice, NFL: ‘Players Must Speak Up’

Denver Broncos defensive tackle Terrance Knighton went off on Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice following release of a video showing Rice punching then-fiancée Janay Palmer and knocking her unconscious in the elevator of an Atlantic City casino. Knighton called on the NFL to find a way to reopen Rice’s case, and implored other players to denounce Rice.

What side effects?

The only destructive side effects to homosexuality that I can see come from the bigots and idiots who either persecute or harass gays, or who try to force their gay relatives into harmful conversion “therapy”. The out LGBT people I know are happy with their lives.

What he’s really saying is, “If I deny my sexuality loudly enough I will become straight and I won’t go to Hell. Because If I deny with vigour and enthusiasm I can fool God!”

Knighton is right. It’s up to the players to start the calling out of Rice right now. There are so many good guys in the league, and they don’t deserve to be slighted because of Rice. I played from a young tyke up to getting a cup of Coffee in the CFL and played some time in Arena Ball. I coach High School now. No way Rice would ever be a part of my team. There are way too many who have done the right thing that Rice(and others who have done things like this) being allowed to continue to have the privilege of playing is sickening.

Larry Klayman is bleating again:

If American Muslims had tried to play a constructive role with their terrorist brothers, that would be one thing. But by and large they sit back and silently cheer events like September 11, or the beheading of American journalists. Encouraged to stay silent by the likes of Barack Hussein Obama, who at every step of his presidency makes excuses for his Islam - the latest being that the beheading of these journalists does not represent Muslim theology - American Muslims have largely acted, and not acted, in ways that unmask their lack of real connection to the nation our Founding Fathers bequeathed to us.

It is thus time not only to revoke the passports and citizenship of these American Muslim traitors who have joined ISIS and other terrorist groups, but also to stop any further Muslim immigration to our shores, unless there are proven and legitimate family or humanitarian reasons for entry.

These immigrating Muslims have no constitutional rights to be or remain here! Let them be forced to return and remain in the lands they hold dear, where maiming and killing is a way of life and where all “infidels,” according to their Shariah law, are to be dealt with harshly. They have no business in our land!

We the People did not ask for a “holy war,” but it is time we pursue and finish it.

The First Amendment, how the fuck does it work?

Kennewick city councilman wants to start meetings with prayer to Christian God

A Kennewick councilman wants his fellow elected officials to pray before their meetings to get in the right frame of mind for dealing with city business.

And he specifically proposes praying to a Christian God, the God of the nation’s Founding Fathers.

But attorneys with the city and organizations that fight against or advocate for religion in government said John Trumbo’s proposal is problematic, especially because it would only allow prayer to a Christian God.

Zephyr Teachout is now following me on twitter.

Besides having an awesomesauce name (and she’s a con law professor in NYC), she’s running for Governor of NY against Andrew Cuomo. She’s facing a seriously uphill battle to win the nomination, but I hope she gives him a run for the money.

Cuomo has done a few bits of good - like strengthening the gun laws - but botched the execution (like not having an exemption on the size magazines for LEOs) and has made a mess of infrastructure in the same lines as Chris Christie across the river. Rebuilding after Sandy isn’t nearly as fast as it should have been, and he refuses to fund the MTA to build out infrastructure and provide a stable revenue stream.

And the giveaway of taxes under the StartupNY program is ridiculous - instead of lowering the tax burden overall and expanding the tax base, he gave preference to new start up companies that do business in the state for 10 years. Favors new companies to the state over existing established ones.

366 lawhawk  Sep 8, 2014 9:40:40am

Look, there’s a presumption of innocence that governs these cases - but that doesn’t mean the NFL has to wait until prosecutors act on the cases. They can suspend/fire players for conduct unbecoming because they are brand ambassadors. The accusations could be sufficient for suspensions.

But here we have a video showing a pretty vicious assault.

My beef starts with the prosecutor who knew, or should have known, of this video, and yet didn’t think Rice warranted a prosecution. Instead the prosecutor did a pre-trial intervention. That’s just wrong.

The NFL doesn’t have to compound that wrong by turning a blind eye to the assault.

They could do a whole lot more. Zero tolerance for the assaults and other criminal actions.

But they have repeatedly shown a willingness to turn a blind eye to criminality by their players/employees. There’s a long list of players who have not only played through even though they’ve been charged in criminal acts, but teams will go out of their way to bring in these players after they’ve done crimes.

The league is more interested in selling NFL gear than they are in protecting the WAGs of their players. They are more interested in profit than they are in protecting their player’s well-being (think concussion/TBIs) and treating older players like crap even when they’re left crippled by a sport where they left everything on the field.

Yeah, some panic seems to be setting in at Westminster.

Most likely, the government allowed the referendum to go ahead because they badly miscalculated the depths of Scottish nationalist sentiment, and now that it looks like the referendum does indeed have a 50/50 shot at passing, they’ve realized they done f***ed up. They likely thought it had no chance whatsoever.

I’ll show my radical side and say that they should have given the same option to the Welsh and Northern Irish too. I understand the sentimentalism with the UK but at the same time, I strongly feel that those people were never given the actual choice if they really wanted to belong to what we call the UK today. And I guess that’s why while undecided whether independence is best for the Scots, I am glad like hell that they’re able to voice their opinions on the subject for once.

Man that one got ugly. You gave good advice though about not being too talky on a subject if you’ve never been to a place or read too much about it. I used to be like that in regards to Ireland. Still definitely sympathize with the desire for many those up north to be part of the Republic but I won’t proclaim to speak for them.

It could have been uglier but stayed manageable, and PLL made apologies the next morning.

Yeah that was big of him. Him and I are both on the spectrum so I empathize with him at times but it’s frustrating to talk to him when he’s got an opinion on a certain ethnic group. I just try to tell him that people are people regardless of nationality. Though I have to say, I’ve happily been broad-brushing the Portuguese in a positive way ever since I got back from Cascais and Lisbon in July and told the Portuguese friend I made over there as much when we caught up the other day.

Shriveled, bitter, old vagina thinks there are too many furriners in Murica:

The Eagle Forum in February issued a report called “How Mass (Legal) Immigration Dooms a Conservative Republican Party.”

The premise was that the vast majority of immigrants in the U.S. have liberal policy preferences, according to survey data from numerous sources. These liberal preferences cannot be overcome by better GOP messaging or Republican support of amnesty for the current illegal population.

According to the report, the only hope for the Republican Party to remain viable as a national conservative party is to restrict the number of legal immigrants allowed into the country each year.

Check the last line.

CDC and public health experts are treating any case that might be suspicious as a hemorrhagic fever as Ebola and using the isolation protocols until the disease is ruled out as a cause. It’s a safety thing.

Of course, the media will breathlessly report that it’s a suspected Ebola case, ignoring that this is a smart protocol on the small chance that it is actually Ebola.

There are plenty of other nasty diseases with the symptoms that Ebola presents with.

re: #408 Lidane

Couldn’t they just adopt the Euro? That would make the most sense, I think.

That’s what I thought they would too. For some reference per wikipedia, here’s what the Irish Free State did which granted was a little different than what may happen in Scotland.
The new state continued to use sterling from its inception: there is no reference in the Treaty or in either of the enabling Acts to currency.[12] Nonetheless and within a few years, the Dáil passed the Coinage Act, 1926 (which provided for a Saorstát [Free State] coinage) and the Currency Act, 1927 (which provided inter alia for banknotes of the Free State pound). The new Saorstát pound was defined by the 1927 Act to have exactly the same weight and fineness of gold as was the sovereign at the time, making the new currency pegged at 1:1 with sterling. The State circulated its new national coinage in 1928, marked Saorstát Éireann (Irish Free State) and a national series of banknotes. British coinage remained acceptable in the Free State at an equal rate. In 1937, when the Free State was supplanted by Ireland (Éire), the coins became marked Éire but the Irish pound (IEP, púnt) remained pegged at par to sterling. Both Ireland (a republic since 1949) and the United Kingdom decimalised their currencies in 1971, and parity continued until Ireland joined the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1979. With the benefit of hindsight (in a contribution to the debate on Scottish Independence) former Taoiseach John Bruton, remarked on the potential for repeating the experience of Ireland with an Irish Pound tied to sterling from the foundation of the state in 1922 until 1978, said “At that time, we had a situation where interest rate policy was determined in London without any Irish input, and we went up and down with the fortunes of whatever suited the British economy as decided by people in Britain”.[13]

When I was last in Scotland, depending on where I was, I could spend pounds or euros.

This is a much scarier fact.

The WHO is already seeing higher cases reported as each time a new Ebola clinic opens, it’s immediately filled to capacity, which means that the local community has been harboring victims but haven’t been getting them care they need - which leads to still more infections and spreading the disease to still others.

414 Romantic Heretic  Sep 8, 2014 10:43:33am

Couldn’t they just adopt the Euro? That would make the most sense, I think.

As Krugman pointed out in the article, that might not help. He noted Spain as typical. They had a boom, that collapsed during the implosion. But having no control over their fiscal policy, and the Eurobank not giving a shit, the country got into a major slump that they still haven’t recovered from.

Essentially the Euro is trying to be a country without actually being a country. So there’s no provision for supporting the weaker parts with the stronger parts. As the Red States are usually supported by the Blue States.

This is a disturbing development. If the NFL fires the players who have committed felonies or beat women, how will they have enough people to sustain the league?

Don’t worry. It will only be the ones who are on video tape released to the public.

Go for it, Chucky. Show them who’s the Alpha Male! I’ll watch as they hand your ass back to you in ten pieces - and that’ll probably be before the defamation suits are filed.

Please proceed, Knucklehead.

BREAKING: Baltimore Ravens Terminate Ray Rice’s Contract

The Baltimore Ravens tweeted the following just a couple minutes ago, a few hours after video emerged of running back Ray Rice punching his then-fiancée Janay Palmer in an Atlantic City casino in February. Rice had previously been suspended two games by the NFL.

And right on cue, the Fox News spokesmodels are babbling:

Fox News host Andrea Tantaros wasted no time during Monday’s episode of “Outnumbered” directing anger at President Obama and the Democrats over a video reportedly showing NFL star Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee in an elevator.

“I wanna know, where is the President on this one?” Tantaros asked, after a brief throat-clearing about the NFL’s obligation to react to the tape.

My point of view on that is as a former player who lost the chance for post season play due to the cheating of others. I(and 90% of my teammates), had little to no knowledge of what was happening, had zero role in it, and cooperated with NCAA investigations into it. We still lost out in the end. All responsible parties left the school with their own punishments, but I felt slighted because I and others did the responsible thing and were still punished. Now, in no way do I want to equate what my school went through with what happened at Penn St., but my experience influences my opinion on this specific point.

re: #516 Jenner7

The NFL has a huge opportunity here to develop a zero tolerance policy, offer professional help for players and their families without stigma, and to raise awareness and money to support shelters and other programs for families who have been wrecked by domestic violence. It would also be a huge PR thing. Sure, there’d be asshole MRA types who would whine and boycott, but they’d gain so much more over the long term. But they won’t, they’ll circle the wagons, cover their asses and hope this blows over.

My husband loves football, college, pro, doesn’t matter. Been a Dolphins fan forever. Win or lose, he doesn’t care. But I told him I refuse to wear the women’s Dolphins shirt he bought me until the league really deals with this and I won’t be watching games with him either. He knows my past, but it still hasn’t really dawned on him how overtly fucking OFFENSIVE and SICK this whole thing is to me and other women like me. Not to mention what it does to kids growing up around domestic violence. It’s astounding to me the depths people will go to to defend athletes of any sort, or anyone they like, comedians, famous people etc, when it’s revealed that they are deep down awful human beings. I don’t get it.

Without question someone will give him a chance next year as long as he does the “right things” optically over the course of the year. He will need to “rehabilitate” himself. There will be references to Michael Vick’s rehabilitation etc….
