Mark Sanford’s Sleazy Divorce Transcript: Dead Children and a Deadbeat Dad

You may have already known that South Carolina Republican Rep. Mark Sanford was an amazingly crummy person. but the new details unearthed by Wonkette’s Kaili Joy Gray take Sanford into the realm of jaw-droppingly horrible: Dead Children and a Deadbeat Dad: Mark Sanford’s Sad, Sleazy Divorce Hearing Transcript.

In this creepy story, you will learn:

  • that Mark was a deadbeat dad who was found in contempt of court for his refusal to make his court-ordered child support payments;
  • that the previously unexplained prohibition against Mark flying airplanes at children arose because "crazy cousin" John played "chicken" by flying an actual passenger airplane at the Sanford kids;
  • that Mark and his ex-wife's primary concern, following the deaths of TWO kids who drowned at Coosaw Plantation, the Sanford family farm, was not about making the farm safer, but rather, protecting their financial assets in case any more kids died there;
  • that Mark repeatedly offered to get back together with his ex, while he was still banging his Argentine lover;
  • that Mark needlessly lied about legal representation.

Wonkette has lots more details; go ye and read of it. But in case you really want to wonk out, here’s the actual court document for your perusal. My only comment is “yeccchhh.”

Sanford’s presidential stock is rising. He’ll make Rand, Bachmann, Huckster, and the rest of the pack look normal and sane.

There is something deeply sick about a man who uses his family as convenient props to get elected to statewide office, and then turns around and arbitrarily decides not to support said family because “I’m cheap.”

Then again, it’s the same sad story with all these “family values” hypocrites. They scream to the heavens and point fingers at the “crisis” with black/Latino families, claiming that lack of good old Christian values is the reason for poverty and violence in the inner cities of America … and then turn around and display the antithesis of those values in their own private lives.

During her testimony, Jenny’s attorney, Deena S. McRackan, introduced into evidence a photograph taken at the farm and asked Jenny to describe it.

This is a game of chicken on the Coosaw air strip. And it is Mark Sanford with a pack of children. And the plane is a Mooney. They fly 175 to 200 miles per hour and they fly straight at the children. And the game is to see who can stand up the longest.

It turns out, the plane flown at children was no toy plane. It was an actual plane, owned and operated by John, another member of the Sanford clan, whom Mark described as the “crazy cousin with an airplane.”

The Sanfords should get together with the Palin clan and the Duck Dynasty for a destruction derby reality spectacular.

What. The. Actual. Fuck? So they had some sort of ranch/camp thing for kids and flew an actual airplane at them in a game of chicken?

You know, if I did shit like that, I’d lose my kids and end up in prison AND never be allowed near kids again. Because I’m a regular working class person. These fucking people? It’s almost like the Sanford clan was trying to live out the scene from North by Northwest - over and over, but the most insane part was that following the death of two kids at their ranch, they didn’t take actions to remediate the dangerous condition - only to limit their exposure to personal liability.

BTW, the dangerous conditions include, but are not limited to, 4-year-olds with guns, kids riding ATVs or motorcycles without helmets (page 11-12).

Nuts? It’s bat-crap insane.

Don’t forget that two children died on that property—one drowned in a swimming pool during a party and the other drowned in one of the holes that MarkyMark likes to dig to relieve stress.

But Jenny was mostly worried about how any future “incidents” might affect her insurance liability. Yeah—Mark’s a lunatic, but Jenny’s not a whole lot better.

As a lifelong Scout and Scouter, assholes like Sanford that made Eagle and then turned their backs on everything that the Scout Law and Oath stand for really makes me angry.

Scouts, especialy Eagles, aren’t supposed to be perfect, we just strive for a higher standard, to be a benchmark; Sanford’s just a massive fail at life where it should really count.

This is incredible. I mean, I’m not surprised, but where is the media on this? Oh, I know. They don’t care unless there are protests and reporters being arrested.

Two distracting lies have been floated with particular damage to public understanding of the ongoing cover-up, both of which Grapski has meticulously refuted. First is the claim that such reports were not public records—a claim that depends on confusing standard police reports identified as public records under law with investigative reports undertaken in special circumstances, which rely on standard reports as their starting point. Second is the claim that no report had to be filed, because of Wilson’s Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination. This neglects the existence of the use-of-force document, which should have been created by another officer by direction of his watch commander, and it misconstrues Wilson’s obligations as an officer, which require him to file an incident report, even if it implicates him in a crime. He can, of course, refuse to file that report. But that refusal is itself a policy violation, and grounds for immediate firing—none of which consequences Wilson has faced.

re: #54 Stanley Sea

Too cheap to hire an atty.

Except that he had two attorneys—

per the 2012 hearing transcript, he did have legal representation. The judge noted that the original divorce agreement was “an agreement that both of you entered into, both of you had advice of counsel in drafting this agreement.” The judge also noted that Mark’s former counsel, a “Mr. Kuyk,” had “informed the court that he was no longer representing Mr. Sanford.” That would appear to be Jim Kuyk, a prominent South Carolina attorney and long-time Mark Sanford supporter, who, among other things, was chairman of the 501(c) Carolinians for Reform, which financed ads in 2009 in support of Sanford’s opposition to the stimulus package, back when Sanford was still living in the glory days of his governorship and seriously considering a run against President Obama in 2012.

Mark’s very good friend Mr. Kuyk apparently also had assistance from Charleston attorney Glenn Churchill during at least one of the divorce hearings, but maybe Glenn is just another good friend who was helping out.

Now maybe Mark just doesn’t understand that even when “two longtime friends” help you through your divorce, when one of them is your official attorney of record, that still counts as legal representation.

It turns out, the plane flown at children was no toy plane. It was an actual plane, owned and operated by John, another member of the Sanford clan, whom Mark described as the “crazy cousin with an airplane.” But, Mark insisted, while Jenny might not have approved of this “game,” she’d spent decades at the farm and was well aware of what kind of reckless “fun” occurred there, so it was sort of unfair of her to object to it now.

The FAA needs to suspend this insane asshole’s license immediately and forever.

Btw, I have been flying since 1966. I have had only one accident, and that was caused by mechanical failure in an Army chopper. General aviation is basically safe and relatively easy but you have to obey the rules. Every one of them is written in blood.
Among other things, I am convinced that a major percentage of GA accidents, especially the “inexplicable” ones, are caused by nothing less than drunkenness. For instance a guy with thousands of hours takes off in his own plane, in broad daylight and clear weather, then suddenly pulls up, stalls, and dives right into the ground. WTF? I think drunk flying is a worse problem than generally realized. It gets filtered out of the public narrative, partly because the victims are relatively important people, at least locally, and partly because fire often destroys the evidence. I have known dozens of yahoos who really thought they could fly drunk. They are like drunk drivers but worse. It’s okay with me if these fools end up being spooned out of a smoking crater by the local coroner, but they often take others (sometimes other drunks) with them. I also don’t like what each “unexplained” accident does to insurance rates and the general public perception of the industry.
