ISIS Bans Teaching Evolution in Schools

Here’s some common ground between America’s religious right and the jihadis of ISIS: ISIS Bans Teaching Evolution in Schools.

The new Mosul curriculum, allegedly issued by al-Baghdadi himself, stresses that any reference to the republics of Iraq or Syria must be replaced with “Islamic State.” Pictures that violate its ultra-conservative interpretation of Islam will be ripped out of books. Anthems and lyrics that encourage love of country are now viewed as a show of “polytheism and blasphemy,” and are strictly banned.

The new curriculum even went so far as to explicitly ban Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution — although it was not previously taught in Iraqi schools.

Maybe this is why the religious right and social conservatives are so hell-bent on fear-mongering about ISIS — they recognize a mirror image of themselves. Their worst enemy.

My son is Asian. Not as dangerous to him as being black or native american but not White safe either.

He has serious mental health issues.

What the fuck do I do?

In the end I’m trying to figure out a safe way to teach him that every cop must be presumed to be the enemy until proven a friend.

Yet how do you do that without triggering his latent, & very real, paranoia?

Not just an enemy but a murderous one. Some one who will kill you for no reason at all. My priest has two adopted black boys about the same age as my son. His children are at an even greater threat than my son.

Why, lord, why?

This is so alien from the universe I grew up in.

DF, I’ve known lots of good people who are police. Spent much time in my life helping to train them. But far too many of them are on a hair trigger. You look at them even slightly wrong and they will be asking your corpse questions rather than you.

I. Have. Tried. To. Teach. Them.

I know how much reaction time they have. I have watched how many will shoot long before they have to. If it isn’t white skin, they shoot. The saddest part? The cop can be white, black, brown, yellow or red and it is still the same. If the perp isn’t white he is far more likely to end up in the morgue than in jail.

I have never walked a beat. Once upon a lifetime ago I wanted to. But then I made the mistake of trying to teach cops how to be careful…

The story with TMZ’s additions comes across far less favorably to Ms. Watts. It turns out the police were called because people saw what they believed (and may well have been) was she and her boyfriend having sex in public. Then when the police arrived, Ms. Watts did not just refuse to show her ID, she loudly accused the officer who asked of racism and then pulled the “Don’t you know who I am?!” card.

Note: Sexytime is OK, but not out in public.

It’s not ignorance of the law, its not being able to know what threat someone really posed. Self-defense law in this country requires the reasonable belief that the threat was real. If that belief is present, then its not murder even if it turns out what a homeowner thought was a gun was really a lockpick device. That actually happened in Chicago in the last couple years and the homeowner was fully cleared by the police and the state’s attorney.

I read that shit. It sounded like a hit piece. They both said they were fully clothed, kissing. Who reported it? Why did they think they were having sex, because she was black and he white?

The “law” in my second sentence is the police. They didn’t know, so they started shooting. If you think that’s justified, you’re sick. As others have pointed out, when the suspect is white and has an actual weapon, the police seem reluctant to do them any harm and manage to subdue them without injury. When this happens to kids, white kids at least, everyone is outraged, but those police didn’t know the kids’ toys weren’t weapons either.

When the police “don’t know” something, they should find out. “Shoot first and ask questions later” shouldn’t be the police’s motto.

I’m not familar with how the LAPD is trained to handle such encounters, but asking for ID may just be Standard Operating Procedure. And Watts only got handcuffed after he tried to leave the scene and refused a second officer’s request for ID in a similarly hostile fashion.

When I was 18 I was pulled over for smoking a pipe while driving on the freeway. The cop took it from me, told me very gently that if I had more I should give it to him or else he’d search the car… I gave him the tiny little pill-box full out of my purse, he didn’t search and find the 12 quarter-oz bags under my seat. I didn’t even have to step out of the car.

He wrote me up a misdemeanor summons for possession of under an ounce, I had to appear in court and was fined $140.

(sadly, it was the same courthouse my mother practiced in; our last name is uncommon, and I sorta looked like her. Somebody told her.

Having to have That Discussion with my mother was a far more serious penalty than the $140 fine.)

Ever hear of a fucking taser? The simple presence of one on a _PROPERLY_ trained officer’s belt decreases violent outcomes. Because they know they have a escape valve.

When we trained MP’s for Bosnia, we spent a lot of time teaching them how to find the weapons those people would really actually likely have - a wire that would be a garrote in my hat, a bit of steel in my shoe, a .25 caliber pistol taped to my groin because “straight guys don’t feel up other men there” and so on. Firearms are so much easier to defend against than 99% of the things humans have thought of…

William, the post you are responding to is talking about Daniele Watts’ encounter with the LAPD after people called the police saying she was having sex with her boyfriend in a car in public view. At no time in that encounter did either officer draw his gun, that much is clear. It was not a lethal force situation.

Hmm. I just noticed something in the giraffe picture I posted in comment #64. My camera somehow transposed the baby giraffe’s neck to the right and in front of the adult giraffe it was behind.

Some sort of digital imaging artifact I guess from snapping the photo and there being a bit of image delay or something with a moving subject. It’s not an effect from cropping and shrinking the image since it is the same in the full-size JPEG downloaded off the camera.

Which, in a way, makes the “evolution, what evolution?” caption a bit more amusing.

Americans got sold on the idea that more policemen = better police protection without giving any thought to the quality of training and the level of professionalism needed.

But that is another point. I think it is a very sad statement out our society that we think two people acting a bit romantic, even if in bad taste, warrants a police inquisition. There are online companies which arrange for “sugar daddy” meetings between women and men (usually). These are expensive. It escapes laws against prostitution. So if you have the $$$ you can essentially hire a mistress for sexcapades. But if you are poor - then we send the police after you.

This gets repeated over and over in our society in all sort of venues and issues.

One of the nicest things about driving to Toronto is driving through the wind orchards. Those wind engines are beautiful and majestic. I don’t understand why some people complain they are “unsightly.”

While Googling for pictures of the wind orchards I came across a bunch of websites which are totally hating on the wind orchards.

Also these things are freaking HUGE. We passed a convoy on the 401 carrying a turbine blade. It was being carried on a special hauler that had to be as large as several 18-wheeler container trucks end to end.

One of the nicest things about driving to Toronto is driving through the wind orchards. Those wind engines are beautiful and majestic. I don’t understand why some people complain they are “unsightly.”

While Googling for pictures of the wind orchards I came across a bunch of websites which are totally hating on the wind orchards.

Also these things are freaking HUGE. We passed a convoy on the 401 carrying a turbine blade. It was being carried on a special hauler that had to be as large as several 18-wheeler container trucks end to end.

I saw some on the highway in Illinois and Indiana — there’s some wind farms there, too. I had no idea those blades are so big! Also explains why wind turbines self-destruct in such a spectacular way when one of the blades fails.

Some states have begun to clamp down on the filing of these liens, but this is a movement that poses a more direct and immediate threat to the US than ISIS. Students still study Maoism and respect him as founder of the country, but he is not worshiped as a demigod anymore.

Here in Toronto you’ll almost always see Asian women under an umbrella on sunny days.

Most, though, I believe are first generation immigrants. Their stature and dress usually shows them as such. Second and later generations are quite acclimated and care no more about the sun than anyone else.

The wind power tallies are from actual studies done. The oil and gas figure is from the BLM and used different methodologies. Coal used still others, but the facts are clear - fossil fuels kill significantly more birds than wind or solar despite the fear-mongers.

One of the nicest things about driving to Toronto is driving through the wind orchards. Those wind engines are beautiful and majestic. I don’t understand why some people complain they are “unsightly.”

While Googling for pictures of the wind orchards I came across a bunch of websites which are totally hating on the wind orchards.

Also these things are freaking HUGE. We passed a convoy on the 401 carrying a turbine blade. It was being carried on a special hauler that had to be as large as several 18-wheeler container trucks end to end.

Driving in western Pennsylvania near the town my father grew up in takes me down a secondary PA state route that goes by a warehouse/storage area for wind turbine blades. They are huge.

And the Allegheny Mountain ridge in that area near Blue Knob State Park is lined with turbines.

Well, my balcony is gone, for the time being at least. The balconies on the building are all being totally reconstructed; apparently, the balconies were all original from when the building was constructed in the early 1970s, and they’ve deteriorated over the decades, so the owner of the building has decided it’s time to put up some new ones.

Should be interesting. They didn’t say how long it’ll take, but I’d imagine a month or so. In the rubble of what used to be my balcony, I can see traces of the original construction materials. They’re all unreinforced concrete and were overlaid with tilework.

I will always give my license/insurance card to a cop for a traffic stop. Getting stopped on the street for doing nothing? When I was 16 I got pulled over for driving a corvette. The owner was sitting next to me. I was pulled over because “girls don’t drive cars like this” and they wanted to make sure it wasn’t stolen.

I *railed* on that cop and called him every name in the book, while cop and owner chuckled at me pitching a fit.

I told them both it get fucked.

Nowadays, I’d probably have been arrested because sexism, like racism or homophobia is okie dokie to the cops, and they are never, ever to be questioned.

I would likely acquiesce because my job requires a certain level of security clearance, but I would not do so quietly - which would equally likely still get me into trouble.

The worst part of all these stories is that I always had HUGE amount of respect for cops. They have difficult jobs and put their lives on the line daily. But there has to be a line somewhere on how you treat people. Because if there is not, they are not there to Serve and Protect. Wariness should be a given. They don’t know what they will encounter. But wariness should not be combined with antagonism and a desire to display the power you hold over the people you stop.

This really sort of does an excellent job of ignoring the reality of interactions with police in America for folks who aren’t white, where they don’t know if any interaction with police is going to result in the loss of their life, etc.

You approved of the article written by the officer who advised that in order to avoid getting beaten by police, you should comply with their requests regardless of how they impacted your rights, I take it? You can always file a protest later, after all.

Sad but true. However, ignorance is no excuse. Abuse is abuse and it must be called out. I don’t know what punishment he should receive for this. To me it is common sense that you don’t beat a child like he did.

It is helpful to know the law.

California is not a Stop and Identify State. It used to be, but the law was struck down in 1983 as void for vagueness, Kolender v. Lawson. So that’s the state of play here, asshole, and it’s irrelevant whether Watts knew this or not. So absent any specific evidence of wrongdoing on her part, which was the case, she was well within her rights to refuse to show her ID to the officers, and it was those officers’ jobs to know this.
