Intense STL Council Meeting Leads to Torrents of Outright Racism at Gateway Pundit

“A pack of useless monkeys”
Wingnuts • Views: 30,476

Last night during the St. Louis County council meeting that erupted in protests from residents infuriated at officials’ inaction on the Michael Brown shooting, I tweeted this:

And like clockwork, that’s exactly what’s happening this morning.

File image

And once again the angry right wing mob is led by the Dumbest Man on the Internet, Jim Hoft: Ferguson Mob Threatens StL County Leaders: “If Wilson Get Off, Y’all Better Bring Every Army Y’ Got, Cuz It’s Going Down” | the Gateway Pundit.

Get a load of Hoft’s inflammatory and distorted description of the shooting of Michael Brown; he’s still hyping his faked post about officer Darren Wilson’s “orbital blowout fracture of the eye socket.”

Brown was shot dead in Ferguson, Missouri on August 9, 2014 after he robbed a local Ferguson convenience store. Brown reportedly smashed police officer Darren Wilson in the face, severely injuring Wilson, before he was shot dead.

Wilson did not know Brown was a robbery suspect when he gunned Brown down; even the Ferguson police chief has acknowledged this. But Hoft repeatedly conflates these two issues as if they’re connected.

And about those “severe injuries” — Hoft made this up out of nothing, and continues to push the lie without any evidence and despite the fact that it’s been debunked repeatedly, most recently by St. Louis Post-Dispatch editor Gilbert Bailon, who said his paper had been unable to verify this bogus story.

But the real reason why Hoft does this is revealed with a look at his comment section, which by now has become totally indistinguishable from a neo-Nazi site, with overt racism and hate speech rampant. Some examples, hidden by default because they’re incredibly sickening:

Let the black version of the KKK AKA the Black Panthers burn Ferguson to the ground. They aren’t smart enough to know what justice is. Send em all back.

[…]

I love how the headline is written in ebonics, lol.

[…]

Oh please do it ! then we can clean this trash out !

[…]

Normally it begins with fake charges, the shaking of tree branches and the baring of fangs. In the future they should keep a pocket of shiny washers on hand. Baubles tend to distract the primitives.

[…]

We can only hope and pray that “it goes down”

[…]

Yup.. they would be mowed down like grass

[…]

I was pretty much raised by a black lady, she had a name for these folks. Political correctness has banned it to hate crime classification.

[…]

What this is really about is the black communi-teh being unable to live by white man’s laws in the white man’s society. To loud mouths like this Anthony Shahid, the solution is demanding the dominant population become subservient to them under threat of violence.
Uncivilized malcontents like Shahid should be repatriated to Ebola-ville where his philosophy and methods are dominant.

[…]

Then it’s time to kill these idiots and be done with it. You don’t get your way just bcz you threaten violence. The shooting was justified and I’d personally shoot every one of you if I live there and had to deal with you chimps.

[…]

What a pack of useless monkeys. And those shitskins wonder why nobody takes them seriously.

[…]

bang! and as many bangs as it takes from the citizen militia to do the job the government just won’t do.

[…]

What a f*cking zoo…..literally.

You can find these kinds of ugly racist comments at nearly every right wing blog that covers this story, by the way. Jim Hoft’s hate site is unusually dumb, but not unusually hateful for this crowd.

Wilson did not know about the convenience store theft when he shot Michael Brown

Charles, this detail doesn’t change much, but for the accuracy’s sake it should be corrected:
cbsnews.com

Jackson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Wilson knew there had been a robbery in the area but did not know that Brown was a suspect.

It shouldn’t be controversial that clean air is important to reducing bad health outcomes, but the right wingers think war on coal is a bad thing.

The war on coal faction is against the faction that wants clean air.

Everyone suffers from coal production - the miners who are seeing a spike in coal related health injuries like black lung (because remaining miners in the US are working longer hours and suffering from longer exposure to particulates to the people downwind from the energy plants that burn the coal.

Reduce the coal burned and you improve air quality (and reduce the number of birds killed) and you also reduce the number of miners exposed to potential black lung.

But the coal producing states don’t want to see those jobs lost, so they’re fighting to retain them, and want to make sure that coal exports to places like China continue - because there’s profit to be made.

All this shows is that there’s no such thing as clean coal.

Even if Darren Wilson had known that Michael Brown was suspected of stealing fifty dollars of cigars, the kid had his hands up. Darren Wilson is guilty of murder. Has he been indicted yet?

21 KerFuFFler  Sep 17, 2014 11:10:11am

Ferguson has brought out the racism in my 92 year old dad. He lives in Texas, so he is probably getting pretty biased news, but I just can’t talk to him about it. He has become unhinged. I know he does suffer from a medical condition where he now has a reduced level of red blood cells, but I cannot blame his thinking entirely on not getting enough oxygen to the brain. I suspect his fear of death has metastasized into FEAR of the OTHER and at this point he sides with Wilson even if it was a bad shoot!

So sad to see this in a person who has always been so thoughtful. He voted for Obama but now he fears all blacks……

It is shameful the way such fear mongering preys upon addled and damaged people.

Actually, that is a quantifiable cost too. Besides, the reduced visibility is a readily accessible and tangible outcome of seeing particulates in the atmosphere that can and do affect public health, including higher asthma incidence and other respiratory ailments.

I’ve had several twitter respondents claiming that Wilson was justified in killing Brown because Brown assaulted him, which assumes facts not in evidence (no proof that Brown punched Wilson, no evidence of injuries to Brown consistent with being in a struggle, etc.)

So no. It’s still excessive force, especially when Brown had his hands up when shot multiple times by Wilson.

An E-1 with no dependents would also get around ~$1000 in housing allowance every month too. And it was the conservatives who a couple years ago were saying you can’t pay soldiers too much otherwise they might make enough money to get save up, get an education, and get a better job.

Not to mention, the amount of military personnel who are on food stamps which the conservatives love to cut.

But now I have no doubt he’s a bonafide racist cretin fanning the flames on purpose. He is an idiot, a moron, but he also acts with purpose and sometimes shows a cunning savagery. Repeating oft debunked lies shows that he has no scruples, a willingness to justify the ends despite the means.

Anymore, it seems you can blame all the major outlets. They are so worried about ratings for advertising, they’d just as soon not report real news. It is by far more important to cover people in line waiting for an Apple release or what dress or suit is worn to the Emmys.

Looking at ALL media. We are so screwed.

And the monied industrial interests continue to win.

They’ve compromised the politicians via campaign spending. They’ve compromised the media via advertising and enslaving news departments to marketing and revenue. And that leaves the average citizen at a complete loss in terms of having influence and getting educated on the issues. Assuming they even have the leisure time to do the research.

And no, the internet at this point is probably not the answer. Without the education and ability to independently research how does one know what web sites can be trusted even then?

From Wiki:

The Akhal-Teke (/ˌækəlˈtɛk/ or /ˌækəlˈtɛki/; from Turkmen Ahalteke, [ahalˈteke]) is a horse breed from Turkmenistan, where they are a national emblem.[1] They have a reputation for speed and endurance, intelligence, and a distinctive metallic sheen. The shiny coat of palominos and buckskins led to their nickname “Golden Horses”.[2] These horses are adapted to severe climatic conditions and are thought to be one of the oldest existing horse breeds.[3] There are currently about 6,600 Akhal-Tekes in the world, mostly in Turkmenistan and Russia, although they are also found throughout Europe and North America.[4]

There are several theories regarding the original ancestry of the Akhal-Teke, some dating back thousands of years. The tribes of Turkmenistan selectively bred the horses, recording their pedigrees orally and using them for raiding. The breed was used in the losing fight against the Russian Empire, and was subsumed into the Empire along with its country. The Akhal-Teke has influenced many other breeds, including several Russian breeds. There has been extensive crossbreeding with the Thoroughbred to create a fast, long-distance racehorse and as a result all Akhal-Tekes have a Thoroughbred ancestor.[5] The studbook was closed in 1932 [6] The Russians printed the first stud book for the breed in 1941, including over 700 horses.

The Akhal-Teke typically stands between 14.2 and 16 hands (58 and 64 inches, 147 and 163 cm). These horses are well known for those individuals who have a golden buckskin or palomino color, a result of the cream gene, a dilution gene that also produces the perlino and cremello colors. A number of other colors are recognized, including bay, black, chestnut, and grey. Aficionados of the breed claim that the color pattern served as camouflage in the desert.[7] Many Akhal-Tekes have a natural metallic sheen to their coat, particularly noticeable in those with cream gene colors.[8]

OT kitteh break, because I’m ridiculously enamored of my 100mm macro lens—it takes beautiful portraits. I seriously need to find some human subjects to practice on because my cats have just about had enough.

Both photos were taken in existing, natural early afternoon light at 1/320 of a sec at f/3.2, ISO 3200. As you can see, even stopped down to f/3.2, the depth of field is very shallow (the camera was focused on the eye in both shots):

Bird-watching, taken from a few feet away

Much closer, but not macro (they don’t like the camera shoved in their faces)

For the inveterate pixel peepers, below is a crop of just the eye from the 2nd photo at 100% (hidden behind a spoiler tag so as not to unnerve anyone with the ginormous cat’s eye, heh).

Note that despite the graininess caused by the somewhat high ISO, you can nonetheless clearly see the window and even the sky, clouds and building across the street reflected in her eye.

I got a couple of decent shots of my other (black & white) cat, but she looks a lot like Peanut and I didn’t want to give RWC a sad.

Now if only they’d let me get close enough and hold still so I could shoot an actual 1:1 macro of something besides noses or fur…

Hoft doesn’t say that Wilson knew, at least not in the piece quoted. He says that the shooting took place after the robbery. That is fact. Is it relevant? Perhaps, because, after all, Brown knew. And what a person knows can influence how they act next. There will be a trial and this all can get sorted out. But I would guess that at trial, the robbery will be introduced into evidence on the grounds that jurors trying to figure out which reports are credible need to know whatever may be available about Brown’s likely frame of mind at the time.

Not that this will save Wilson. The evidence that’s in the public domain, taken as a whole, doesn’t look good for him. But at trials, all the evidence, not just what helps the prosecution, goes into the scales.

My classic photo for lack of depth of field was the head-on shot I took of a horsefly. Unfortunately it’s the front out of focus and the wings in focus instead of vice-versa - which in my opinion would have been a much better shot. :(

Depth of field lacking

Yeah, it’s especially difficult with skittish, fast moving subjects. The cat was sitting at the foot of my bed, probably about 3-4 feet from the window, and several shots were ruined by her head suddenly whipping around to follow the flight of a bird past the window. (There’s a bush under the window on the lower right where birds like to congregate—it drives the cats nuts when they’re sitting directly on the window sill, especially if the window is open and there’s only the screen between them.)

At least there are no squirrels though. When I lived in Jersey City they were awful—when the cats where sitting at the window, they’d crawl up the side of the building (I lived on the 2nd floor) and taunt them, chattering at them just out of reach. They used to screw around with the outdoor cats too, mostly by charging at them then running away laughing maniacally (or so I imagined: “Yo, Frank, watch this…*fake bum rushes cats reclining in sun* Dude, did you see the way they jumped? Bwahahaha!”)

Kook site “The Blaze” posted a nifty video of F/A-18s flying through a canyon below some hikers near Death Valley.

Well and good, but one poster is suspicious, suspicious I say:

Why are there no markings on these jets? Exactly who is flying them, and where are they based?

*Dumps all the desks in the world into canyon, drops a nuke.*

To belabor the obvious, there are markings on them, of the low visibility type that all combat aircraft have these days, and they are even visible in the video. To their credit, some of the Blazers immediately set the paranoid poster straight, even naming the unit and its base (NAS Lemoore) but I am not sure the explanation succeeds.

It’s not about whether it’s relevant in general. Yes, it would be introduced at the trial, if it ever takes place.

It’s about how Hoft frames the issue, making it seem that the robbery is the direct cause of the incident.

The squirrels that thought the height of fun was going ten feet up a tree on branch to scold the cats at my brother’s place had this odd habit of coming down with cases of lead poisoning.

My brother had a running feud with them, especially red squirrels, due to one getting into his attic and causing havoc. Thus a continuing shooting war with them since his house rests in a grove of maple, hickory, and a few oak trees. Nothing to draw rodents like living in the middle of an acre of natural squirrel food.

In April 1941 when the Germans invaded Yugoslavia, Sarajevo was bombed from the air. The home of the Kavilio family was destroyed. They had fled to the hills when the bombing began, and were now without a home. As they were walking to the family factory, they met Mustafa Hardaga, a Muslim friend who was the owner of the factory building. He immediately offered them to stay at his house.

The Hardagas were observant Muslims. The household included Mustafa and his wife Zejneba, and his brother Izet and wife Bachriya. According to their Muslim tradition, the women were supposed to wear a veil and cover their faces in front of strangers. Having a strange man sleep at their home was a most unusual step. However, as Zejneba described many years later, their husbands welcomed the Kavilios and told them that they would now be part of the family. “Our home is your home”, they said, and to demonstrate this point, the women were not obliged to cover their faces in the presence of Josef Kavilio, since he was now a member of the family.

The Kavilio family stayed with the Hardagas for a short while until Josef Kavilio was able to move his wife and children to Mostar, in an area under Italian control, where Jews were relatively safe. Kavilio himself stayed behind to liquidate his business. Eventually he was arrested and imprisoned by the Ustasa. Because of the heavy snow, the prisoners could not be transferred from Sarajevo to the infamous Jasenovac camp near Zagreb, where the Croatians systematically killed Serbs, Jews and Roma. Instead the prisoners were taken, with their legs chained, to clear the roads from snow. This is where Zejneba saw Kvilio. Kavilio later testified that he saw her standing at the street corner, her face traditionally veiled, watching the plight of their family friend with tears in her eyes. Undisturbed by the danger, she began to bring food to the prisoners.

Josef Kavilio eventually managed to escape and returned to the Hardaga home. The family welcomed him warmly and nursed him back to health. The Gestapo headquarters were nearby, and the danger was immense. In his testimony Josef described the notices on the walls threatening those who would hide Serbs and Jews with the death penalty. Not wanting to endanger the Hardagas life, Josef decided to flee to Mostar and join his family.

After September 1943, when the Italian areas came under German occupation, the Kavilio family had to move yet again. They fled to the mountains and joined the partisans. After the war they returned to Sarajevo. Again they stayed with the Hardagas until they could find a place of their own. The Hardagas also returned the jewelry that the Kavilio family had left with them for safekeeping.

It was then that they learned that Zejneba’s father, Ahmed Sadik, had been hiding a Jewish by the name of Papo in his home. He did not survive the war. He was caught, arrested and killed in Jasenovac.

The Kavilio family immigrated to Israel. In 1984 they asked Yad Vashem to recognize the Hardaga family and Ahmed Sadik as Righteous Among the Nations. A year later, Zejneba Hardaga came to Israel to plant a tree in her family’s name.

Fifty years after the Holocaust, when in 1994 Sarajevo was under the attack of Serb forces, Zejneba and her family were in great distress. With the help of the Joint Distribution Committee, Yad Vashem appealed to the President of Bosnia to permit Zejneba to come to Israel. In February 1994 Zejneba, her daughter her husband and child arrived in Israel and were welcomed by government officials, representatives of Yad Vashem and the Kavilios. The Hardagas had sheltered a Jewish family during the darkest period in Jewish history. It was now the State of Israel that paid back the debt and helped the Hardagas in their time of distress.

It was probably this deep bond that prompted Zejneba’s daughter - Sarah Pecanac - and her family to convert to Judaism. “It is only natural that I should want to become Jewish. It is an honor for me to belong to these people”, she explained. She closed yet another circle, when she began working for Yad Vashem, where the story of her family is exhibited in the museum, where the file about the family is kept in the archive of the Righteous Among the Nations, and where a tree was planted by her mother in honor of her family’s courage and humanity.

Seven years later a new conflict began. This time it was a deadly civil war, and Sarajevo was besieged. The siege lasted 4 years and claimed more than 11,000 lives. Zeinaba was now in her seventies, and in poor health. On top of that, her Muslim daughter Sara was married to a Serbian Christian man, and they were living on the front line between the two warring areas of Sarajevo. Relentless bombing forced the family underground for six months.

“You don’t need a clock, you don’t need a calendar, the year means nothing, it’s as if time has stopped as you wait every day for 6 months, for someone to come to kill you. It could be a Serbian coming to kill me, or a Muslim coming to kill my husband. And the most terrible thing was that this was happening at the end of the 20th century in the heart of Europe,” said Sara Pecanac.

Won’t be a trial if there’s no arrest.

Ordinarily, the murderer’s frame of mind is at issue, not the victim’s. Why is this one different?

Again, the assumption that there will be a trial, is only an assumption so far.

Why is this one different? The defense theory of what happened will surely be that Brown started a fight. And then the question will be, is that even plausible that he would do that? And the Wilson defense team will want to argue that yes it’s plausible, because Brown would have known that he had just robbed a store and would have feared that this stop was related to that. Whenever there is trouble between two or more people, it helps to know what can be known about the frame of mind that all of them were in.

The prosecution will be going over anything that was tweeted, posted, blogged, etc. on Wilson’s part. Quite rightly. Here, we have a vacuum of information in the public domain but perhaps more is known to the grand jury. At any rate, everything has to be gathered up.
