Thank you alpuz, Mattand and Bubblehead II for the condolences downstairs. This is the second sudden death of a friend in three weeks. Cory was only 35. He took me to my first Umphrey’s McGee show, he turned me on to Ween, John Scofield, old Butthole Surfers. We went to Zappa Plays Zappa together when it was the all-star line-up (Vai, Bozzio, Murphy-Brock). We were even in a band together for a time (he was a great drummer!). I already miss him so.

It’s always tough when we lose a friend. Tougher still when they’re that young. Toughest of all when you’re the one everyone leans on to be the emotional stability in the turmoil of loss. I don’t know if that’s you, but either way - my sincerest condolences.

I like that about my android. If I’m typing, say, a message and accidentally hit the home button, when I go back later and start typing the same tweet, the suggested text remembers the last sequence of words I used and, if I use the same ones as before, can tap-tap-tap the message/email/tweet in a few seconds. Also good when texting two different people about meeting up without wanting to join the two in the same conversation as they’ll start talking to each other for days in that thread and you have to listen to the whole thing.

Weirdest news story of the day:

Sheriff: Burned armpit hair led to Idaho car crash

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A car full of teenagers crashed in Idaho after one of the passengers lit the driver’s armpit hair on fire with a lighter, authorities said Wednesday.

All five young people in the Ford Bronco were hurt in the crash Sunday and received medical treatment, the Ada County Sheriff’s Office said.

Two of the passengers, ages 15 and 16, were thrown from the vehicle, but none of the five suffered life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s department said the rollover occurred after a 16-year-old boy was goofing off in the front seat and lit 18-year-old Tristian Myers’ armpit hair on fire while Myers was driving. The crash happened at about 5:30 a.m. in southeast Boise.

Deputies cited Myers with inattentive driving, while the 16-year-old was cited for interfering with the driver’s safety. The passenger’s name wasn’t released. A 17-year old also was in the front seat but was not cited.

Deputies also said none of the teens was wearing a seatbelt, and there was evidence Myers was driving too fast.

A court date will be scheduled later for Myers, who has no listed phone number. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

I’ve gotten to where I think keeping people alive is better punishment, but:

Coleman, 38, was sentenced to death after being found guilty of murdering Davontae Williams, her partner’s nine-year-old son, a decade ago. Davontae was emaciated, weighing 35 pounds at the time of his death in 2004, and had multiple injuries on his body. Coleman and Marcella Williams, her longtime girlfriend, had restrained him and deprived him of food, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Half the job of CPS here in Texas is to protect the reputation of the state.

Edit: And what I mean by that is, if ignoring it will make it go away, they will. (And before everyone goes nuts, I’m not talking about all CPS workers, since know a few. It depends on where they are and who the children are.)

On this day in 1716, 18 year old Jean Thurel enlisted in the army of the King of France. He would serve until his death on March 10, 1807 aged 108. His service with the Régiment de Touraine for 90 years and 6 months as a common fusilier, fighting in numerous wars, will probably remain unequaled.

Hannity says he deserved to get beaten:

Fox News host Sean Hannity unbuckled his belt and whacked it Monday night, while demonstrating how he was beaten as a child and defending Minnesota Vikings player Adrian Peterson.

Hannity made the remarks while speaking to a panel on his program ‘Hannity’, which consisted of Mike Bako, Robi Ludwig, and Mercedes Colwin, Mediaite pointed out.

Peterson, a star in the NFL, is accused of beating two of his children.

‘I got hit with a strap, bam, bam, bam, and I’ve never been to a shrink, by my father,’ Hannity said while starting the discussion. ‘I would tell you I deserved it. I think he went too far, but I don’t want to see this guy get a felony, I don’t want to see this guy lose his job, I don’t want to see this guy - he deserves parenting classes.’

SNIP

When Ludwig spoke about between spanking, child abuse and corporal punishment, Hannity unbuckled his belt from his trousers.

‘I got it like this!,’ he said, while whacking his belt on the table three tames. ‘And I deserved it. I was a troubled kid.’

‘We know better,’ Ludwig said, while Colwin talked about how felony child abuse charges may be brought against a parent.

As Colwin spoke, Hannity repeatedly snapped his belt.

‘So a switch is always wrong in your view?’ he asked after she finished speaking.

‘Yes,’ Colwin said.

Ummm, maybe Hannity is revealing a little too much about himself there.

Colwin better steer clear of Hannity.

Apple - Privacy - Government Information Requests

Our commitment to customer privacy doesn’t stop because of a government information request.

Government information requests are a consequence of doing business in the digital age. We believe in being as transparent as the law allows about what information is requested from us. In addition, Apple has never worked with any government agency from any country to create a “back door” in any of our products or services. We have also never allowed any government access to our servers. And we never will.

What we’re most commonly asked for and how we respond.

The most common requests we receive for information come from law enforcement in the form of either a Device Request or an Account Request. Our legal team carefully reviews each request, ensuring it is accompanied by valid legal process. All content requests require a search warrant. If we are legally compelled to divulge any information and it is not counterproductive to the facts of the case, we provide notice to the customer when allowed and deliver the narrowest set of information possible in response. National security-related requests are not considered Device Requests or Account Requests and are reported in a separate category altogether.

On devices running iOS 8, your personal data such as photos, messages (including attachments), email, contacts, call history, iTunes content, notes, and reminders is placed under the protection of your passcode. Unlike our competitors, Apple cannot bypass your passcode and therefore cannot access this data. So it’s not technically feasible for us to respond to government warrants for the extraction of this data from devices in their possession running iOS 8.

I want to offer my condolences too. Losing close friends is never easy and at that age makes it even tougher. I’m glad you got to share some tunes with him.

Yeah the funny thing about getting hit by your parent is your parent is also the person that teaches the parameters of “just” punishment.

First I got spanked for something specific. Hey I deserved it.

Then I got spanked for some reason I couldn’t work out. But Dad was angry, and he was my father, so I must have done something. Did I laugh too loud? Did I talk too much about the wrong subject? Must have been something.

Then I got older, and I got punched or slammed against a wall. Well, it was Dad doing it, I must really be a terrible person. He kept saying “I get angry because I care,” so I felt this great shame that I couldn’t be a good son.

Since this is a personal statement, I’m not going to go into the clinical issues with hitting kids—that punishment-as-learning is actually horribly inexact, that—but I will say this: the reason you shouldn’t hit your kids is you are not as rational, self-controlled, or observant as you imagine yourself. To fuck your kid up forever, all you have to do is mistake anger for clarity.

Earlier today I mentioned the Pearls, who teach corporal punishment. What they don’t teach—and, in my opinion, why their adherents occasionally beat their kids to death—is doubt and mercy. Is your kid not getting it? Hit ‘em again! Still not getting it? They’re willful, again! Their books might not say “go ahead, kill the ungrateful bastards,” but their formulation of discipline doesn’t allow for parents to the ones in the wrong, nor for discipline issues to emanate from something other than defiance.

The Pearls are part of the authoritarianism dominating the fundie movement. Whoever is in charge is always right, be it father, husband or pastor. Children, women and lay people are never in charge, so they can never be right.

As you say, what’s missing is even an ounce of humility in recognizing that sometimes those who are in charge can be wrong, because they are fallible human beings. Fundies only recognize and acknowledge this truth after the fact, when something has horribly gone wrong.
