Drudge Touts Claims That Illegal Aliens Are Source of Enterovirus Outbreak

Relying on shady racist sources; blaming CDC for coverup
Health • Views: 44,680

Matt Drudge’s website is nothing if not consistent; they tweet an endless stream of inflammatory and eye-catching claims/statements. A couple of these tweets caught my eye:

I’ve quoted the relevant items from the Drudge page:

Mystery illness spreads to Virginia

Now 16 states...

Doctor: Feds ‘Tight-Lipped,’ May be From Illegals

I’ve donotlinked the Breitbart story.

Let’s start from the top.

What’s going on is not a mystery illness. It’s been defined and identified for quite some time. It’s enterovirus 68 (EV-D68). In fact, a quick google search reveals that it’s been identified as a specific strain since 1962.

Further searches find that there was another outbreak in the US in 2009.

This is a disease that has been around for some time, but has been uncommon. Now it’s spreading, with infections in at least 16 states.

The problem is that it can cause severe symptoms leading to hospitalizations, especially for kids with asthma. Doctors are suggesting if your kids get sick and they begin showing signs of respiratory distress (20 or more breaths per minute), get to a hospital ASAP.

That dispenses with the mystery part.

Now, let’s tackle the next claim. Drudge touts a Breitbart report that cites a doctor who says the CDC is hiding the source of the disease, and that it may be illegal aliens or foreigners who have brought the disease to the US.

First problem with this claim? The disease was first identified here in the US in 1962. And there have been outbreaks in the US before; they’ve come in September of those years, which seems to correlate with the return of kids to school:

Georgia and Pennsylvania reported clusters of enterovirus 68 almost exactly five years ago in September 2009, according to a 2011 CDC report. Arizona had a small cluster of cases in August and September 2010, according to the same report.

Second problem? The doctor who was cited, Dr. Jane Orient, belongs to the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. The AAPS is a right wing nutter organization, which has been well documented peddling nonsense. Here’s what she actually said, based on the Breitbart quotes:

Orient added “we don’t know where it’s coming from…are there immigrants from Central America, where this disease has allegedly been prevalent before? Should we be [looking at] the virus to see whether it’s like what’s been found in some of these countries that are just sending waves of children across our border and they haven’t been quarantined long enough to make sure they’re not sick?”

She also spoke about the risks posed by drug resistant tuberculosis, saying “virtually all of the cases of drug resistant TB that have been discovered in the United States are in foreign born individuals, and the vast majority of any type of TB is in a person who was born in a foreign country. It is a public health nightmare to just have one of these cases in your community because the person needs to be quarantined…and you could catch TB on a bus, there is no question about that.”

Once again, this doctor clearly isn’t familiar with the disease, let alone a basic Google search because 1) the disease was first identified in the US in 1962; 2) outbreaks have occurred in the US in the past, including in September 2009 and August and September of 2010; and 3) the states where the outbreaks occurred thus far aren’t exactly border states with Mexico. The states that have seen cases aren’t exactly border states with high percentages of illegal aliens.

Instead, what we have is just more typical fear mongering from the right, using the veneer of legitimacy by getting a doctor with questionable “credentials” to make statements unsupported by actual facts.

It’s not known how prevalent the disease has been in the US since the CDC doesn’t require reporting - the information so far has been reported voluntarily. What we might find out if testing and reporting were made mandatory is that the disease is a whole lot more common than we thought because its symptoms mirror those of many other similar diseases.

A: EV-D68 infections are thought to occur less commonly than infections with other enteroviruses. However, CDC does not know how many infections and deaths from EV-D68 occur each year in the United States. Healthcare professionals are not required to report this information to health departments. Also, CDC does not have a surveillance system that specifically collects information on EV-D68 infections. Any data that CDC receives about EV-D68 infections or outbreaks are voluntarily provided by labs to CDC’s National Enterovirus Surveillance System (NESS). This system collects limited data, focusing on circulating types of enteroviruses and parechoviruses.

There’s a natural presence of this disease in the US, which flares up from time to time. This year’s outbreak is more widespread than in prior events so it generates more news, but Breitbart and Drudge are quick to blame the foreigners for this.

On no actual evidence.

This doesn’t even begin to touch on the claims about drug resistant TB. For starters, drug resistant TB is rare in the US. The rate of multidrug resistant TB cases reported in the US appears to be pretty constant, undermining the claims that there’s cases swarming the borders too.

UPDATE at 9/18/14 10:15:39 am by lawhawk

As Gus and I have posted down in the comments, the AAPS, and their publication, The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, is a collection of libertarian and right wing extremist belief that trumps science. Moreover, they both regularly peddle racist and xenophobic statements.

And Breitbart picked up on this and Drudge approvingly touted.

It speaks volumes.

Association of American Physicians and Surgeons - RationalWiki

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons is a small group of “conservative” quacks, cranks and fundamentalist zealots which likes to rail against such timeless evils as abortion, vaccination and the idea of universal health care coverage.[1]

Its website offers this ridiculous claim:

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) is a non-partisan professional association of physicians in all types of practices and specialties across the country. Since 1943, AAPS has been dedicated to the highest ethical standards of the Oath of Hippocrates and to preserving the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship and the practice of private medicine. Our motto, “omnia pro aegroto” means “all for the patient.”[2]

It is listed as a quack organization by Quackwatch[3] and is sufficiently batshit insane to have retained Andrew Schlafly as its general counsel.

re: #2 Gus

Yup. It is a batcrap insane collection of beliefs.

The AAPS means what it says, too. For example, the AAPS is explicitly opposed to any form of government regulation of health care; considers the FDA and Health Care Financing Administration to be unconstitutional; is utterly opposed to Medicare; urges physicians not to participate in Medicare; describes public health programs as “tyranny”; and liberally quotes Ayn Rand.

The group regularly peddles in xenophobia and racism, and Breitbart picks up on this and Drudge approvingly links.

Dr. Jane Orient was with those other crackpots, Doctors for Disaster Preparedness.

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness (DDP)[1] is a somewhat curious denialist group associated with anti-environmental forms of denialism (including DDT ban myths, ozone depletion denial, global warming denial, and crank theories about radiation hormesis) and medical denialism (vaccine denial and HIV denial).

They are associated with Arthur B. Robinson’s Oregon Institute for Science and Medicine, which distributes the Oregon Petition with its highly dubious claim to have identified 31,072 scientists who oppose the anthropogenic global warming consensus. DDP also seems to be another outlet for Robinson’s brand of survivalism, being more concerned about the specter of nuclear war and duck and cover drills than actual problems or disasters. Their mission is, in theory, to refute “fake” threats and help prepare for “real” ones. Thus, the possibility of global thermonuclear warfare, vaccines, environmentalists, and dirty hippies — big threats to the existence of society. Global warming, ozone depletion, AIDS, etc.? Not so much. Their “educational resources” also include links to such trustworthy sites as Junk Science and the Heartland Institute.

Thanks. This is a whole lot of bad crazy, and someone who just glances at headlines via Drudge might not realize what’s going on.

Heck, they might even think the AAPS is a real legitimate organization. It’s once you dig just a little deeper do you realize how much bad crazy is involved with this.

And right in the mix of it is Rand Paul, who is a long time member, and who wants people to think he’s moderating his views ahead of the 2016 run for the White House. He’s doing no such thing. He’s simply hiding his intentions and he can’t run away from his longstanding relationship with this racist and xenophobic group.

On a similar note, Newt Gingrich is the latest to spout absurd claims that undocumented immigrants are bringing ebola into the US: Gingrich, Delay and the Freshman GOP Class of 1994 Reunite on Hill

Gingrich and DeLay also fielded questions about immigration policy, though neither acknowledged the growing realization among many of their peers that if the GOP doesn’t take some affirmative stance on the issue in the next two years, they could pay for it at the polls in 2016.

Gingrich said a porous border meant undocumented individuals could come into the United States carrying Ebola.

Anti science. Anti modern medicine.

That can lead to no good. Outbreaks of diseases that should be rare, if not outright eliminated altogether. Health care expenses that could have been completely and totally avoided with a cost-effective vaccination, but instead hospitalizations, complications, and lost wages from caregivers who have to stay home to care for the sickened.

I imagine Beck would have been at home with the folks with pitchforks coming for Jenner when he suggested vaccination against smallpox.

These people don’t understand the risks from these easily avoided diseases because they don’t know what outbreaks look like precisely because these diseases have been nearly eliminated due to vaccinations. But it doesn’t take much for a resurgence except people who refuse to vaccinate, lose the herd immunity, and the most vulnerable in the population get sickened.

There’s a body count. And it will continue growing as the likes of Beck spread their ill-informed nonsense.

Drudge continuing that not so proud American tradition

On the morning of 19 May 1900,” writes American University professor Alan M. Kraut in an essay titled “Foreign Bodies: The Perennial Negotiation over Health and Culture in a Nation of Immigrants,” “the Chinese community of San Francisco found itself under siege in the name of state and municipal security. It was not fear of bombs or terrorist attack that inspired officials to commit a wholesale violation of civil liberties that morning; it was fear of disease, specifically bubonic plague.

That wasn’t the first quarantine of San Francisco’s Chinatown, and it wouldn’t be the last. Nor was it a surprise—local authorities long regarded Chinese immigrants as a threat to public health, a manifestation of long-standing nativist fears. To wit, notes Kraut, “The Irish were charged with bringing cholera to the United States in 1832. Later the Italians were stigmatized for polio. Tuberculosis was called the ‘Jewish disease.’

Because there aren’t just ISIL fighting Assad? There’s the FSA and other rebel groups that aren’t ISIL that want to see Assad gone.

Problem is that anyone who supports attacking Assad would also end up indirectly supporting ISIL by reducing the threat Assad poses to the group. They benefit indirectly.

If you target ISIL, then Assad indirectly benefits. Because you’re reducing the capabilities of a group opposed to Assad’s continue rule over Syria.

Danielle Beck filed a lawsuit on Sunday and said Bundy “recklessly, carelessly and negligently allowed his cows to enter onto Interstate 15 through an area where he had no grazing or other rights.”

According to the police report, Beck and her boyfriend Matthew Zanatta encountered multiple cows in both lanes of the interstate. Zanatta tried to stop the car, but ended up hitting a cow and swerved off the road. The cows apparently made it onto the highway through a hole in a fence.

Bundy on Wednesday said that he’s not responsible for the car accident.

“It’s a state problem. It’s not our problem,” Bundy told the Review-Journal. “We really feel bad when it happens. We sure don’t want it to happen. But we’re not liable.”

In Virginia, it’s pretty damn impossible to to find a farmer liable for damages in a vehicle versus farm animal accident because of the way the law is. I don’t recall the benchmark required but a family member was sued several years because a cow got out (the property was fenced with barbed-wire but if a fully grown cow wants to get out, you’re probably not going to be able to stop him).

Same in Kentucky, unless there’s been a pattern of not fixing your fences. Then the farmer is totally liable to the extreme.

In case anyone was wondering what this clown was up to these days:

talkingpointsmemo.com

Sadly, Bundy will probably be held not liable for the incident due to Nevada’s open range laws.

568.360. Duties of owners of domestic animals with respect to domestic animals upon the highway

1. No person, firm or corporation owning, controlling or in possession of any domestic animal running on open range has the duty to keep the animal off any highway traversing or located on the open range, and no such person, firm or corporation is liable for damages to any property or for injury to any person caused by any collision between a motor vehicle and the animal occurring on such a highway.

2. Any person, firm or corporation negligently allowing a domestic animal to enter within a fenced right of way of a highway is liable for damages caused by a collision between a motor vehicle and the animal occurring on the highway.

Number 2 might apply to Bundy IF it was his responsibility to maintain the fence. If it was installed by the State, then he gets to walk.

One thing you have to remember. These open range laws were written by Ranchers for Ranchers and are very hard to beat in Court.

BTW, Idaho’s open range laws are pretty much the same as Nevada’s

You could argue that Bundy was negligent in allowing his herd to roam on lands that weren’t his in the first place, and therefore he’s ultimately responsible.

But for his grazing on federal lands, his herd would not have wandered on to the Interstate right of way.

Having collided with deer not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES in my 40 years of driving, I can tell you that hitting 100-200 lbs of deer is unpleasant, but generally safer than hitting 1000 lbs of cow.

Texas Moves To Override New AP History Course

Amid uproar in conservative circles about perceived anti-American bias in the new Advanced Placement U.S. History course and exam, Texas on Wednesday moved to require its high school students to learn only state-mandated curriculum — not be taught to the national test.

The Board of Education approved a measure declaring that the history curriculum its members set trumps that covered by the AP history course created for classrooms nationwide. That class concludes with an exam that can earn college credit for students who score high enough.

The board must still take a final vote, but the measure’s content isn’t expected to change.

Meh, it’s hard for my to have any love for SyFy after what they did to Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica. They aired them together on Friday and got great viewership, then decided to move BSG to Sundays and the viewership for all three shows dropped. They ended up cancelling SG-1, the day after its 200th episode, and neither Atlantis nor Battlestar lasted much longer.

It’s hard for me to feel bad about the demise of the Stargate franchise. SG-1 was showing all the signs of series rot, Atlantis was spinning its wheels, and the less said about Destiny the better. As for Galactica, it’s a sorry state of affairs when I can say the ending to Mass Effect 3 was more satisfying than that series’ finale.

Netflix has made me appreciate SyFy that I before simply associated with really bad movies. I got hooked on Warehouse 13 and just recently binged on Eureka. Really happy to see another season of Haven as well.

“Ask the Caribs about immigrants importing diseases.

Never mind…there are no more Caribs.”

slate.com

In 2005, an episode of Lou Dobbs Tonight falsely asserted, “We have some enormous problems with horrendous diseases that are being brought into America by illegal aliens,” including 7,000 cases of leprosy in the past three years. On his radio show, Bill O’Reilly agreed that immigrants were crossing the border with “tuberculosis, syphillis, and leprosy,” and in 2006, Pat Buchanan claimed “illegal aliens” were responsible for bedbug infestations in “26 states.”

ISTM one of my college history classes discussing that syphillis could have been a 15th Century gift from the Caribs to the immigrant Spanish, who in turn took the disease back to Spain, and the western world.

Dunno if that theory has been debunked or not.

Multiple sources have tipped us off that the still-unidentified alleged assailants in last week’s attack at 16th and Chancellor streets are claiming self-defense. Caryn Kunkle, a source close to the victims who originally publicized the story, shared the following message on her Instagram feed:

Hate Crime update: the group of 15 genius kids who attacked two unarmed and non-PDA gay men on their way out for pizza on Sept. 11th at 10:45pm in the Rittenhouse area of Philadelphia are claiming “SELF DEFENSE.” Probably because the insanity defense was clearly unavailable….. Since when does collectively pounding someone’s face into the concrete while audibly and repeatedly shouting “dirty faggot” qualify

I reached out to her to ask how the victims were taking this development, and she told me that “the District Attorney prepared the boys for that. It would be pretty much the only attempt at an excuse they could possibly try. However, it was very clear that the group asked if they were dating before the assault began, and they verbally assaulted them before and during the time they were beating them. I don’t think self defense will stick for long. Every witness refutes their claim.”

This undermines the claims by the FPD about basic facts of the case, and further undermines the case that Wilson utilized legitimate force in dealing with the situation.

Yeah, apparently Brown was supposed to close a 90ft gap and attack Wilson while the latter already had his gun out and had fired a minimum of two “warning shots.”

I read one article that said the problem is single member districts and that we should adopt proportional voting so everyone is represented. I don’t like that, because I think it leads to multiple parties with very narrow interests, and I think its better to have two large parties with coalitions within them. I think the problem is with politicians getting to choose their own voters with gerrymandering, which results in districts which are so safe that activists from the extreme wings of the party get control of who is elected through the primary process. I think it would be better if districts were drawn with an eye toward having a balance of Republicans , Democrats and Independents, with open primaries, to limit the power of activists.

World leaders will descend on United Nations Headquarters in New York on 22 September to commemorate twenty years since the adoption of a landmark agreement known as the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The ICPD transformed the world’s thinking about sustainable development, shifting the concern from population growth and numbers to placing human rights at the centre of policy-making — in particular the fundamental rights and freedoms of women and girls to have control over their sexual and reproductive lives.

Remember when the US set the standard for civil rights? Ok, I don’t either.

In the rigidly sexist world of metal, it’s a step up.

Women in metal tend to be marginalized as either girlfriends, groupies, or vapid background eye candy. The few women who front metal bands end up being Disney princesses in flowing gowns, or Goth opera singers in tight leather corsets. There are some female metal musicians that don’t fit that mold, like Alissa White-Gluz of the death metal band Arch Enemy, but that’s rare. Most women in the genre get tossed into very defined roles. Having GWAR fronted by a woman is a big deal.

Good grief, I’d never heard of GWAR until just now. I made the mistake of looking them up on Google Images. I know it’s just make-believe, but sheesh… I just don’t see how anyone could find enjoyment in that kind of stuff. Guess I’m turning into an old fogey.

As for Vulvatron, sorry, but I have a hard time seeing “a spiky purple Amazon whose massive (prosthetic) breasts occasionally shoot geysers of blood out onto her hapless audience” as a step up for womankind.

I’m loving this:

Although the American Humanist Association had represented the airman, Robertson on Thursday blamed Military Religious Freedom Foundation President Mikey Weinstein for the movement against religion in the armed services.

“There’s a left-wing radical named Mikey Weinstein who has got a group about people against religion or whatever he calls it, and he has just terrorized the armed forces,” Robertson opined. “You think you’re supposed to be tough, you’re supposed to defend us, and you got one little Jewish radical who is scaring the pants off of you.”

Weinstein responded to Robertson’s remarks in a brief statement to The Friendly Atheist.

“Pat Robertson is to human dignity and sanity and integrity and character what dog sh*t is to a fine French restaurant on the menu,” Weinstein was quoted as saying.

re: #254 Lidane

In the rigidly sexist world of metal, it’s a step up.

Women in metal tend to be marginalized as either girlfriends, groupies, or vapid background eye candy. The few women who front metal bands end up being Disney princesses in flowing gowns, or Goth opera singers in tight leather corsets. There are some female metal musicians that don’t fit that mold, like Alissa White-Gluz of the death metal band Arch Enemy, but that’s rare. Most women in the genre get tossed into very defined roles. Having GWAR fronted by a woman is a big deal.

Okay, I’ll take your word for it. I just… I can’t relate to it at all, on any level. I even tried stepping through a few mental exercises with the concept, replacing metal women with marginalized women in other situations/cultures that I can more easily relate to, but… nope, nada, didn’t work—I couldn’t find a way to see it as a net positive thing. *shurgs*

This fight belongs to ALL of us, not just parents. You want educated young people, they’re the ones who are going to be taking care of us old farts in nursing homes and hospices, and they’re going to be running things. These fuckbuckets need to hear from a LOT of people, by mail, by phone, by email, whatever. The textbook publishers need to feel the heat too. Nothing will change if this fight stays in Texas and only parents get involved.

I’m pretty sure most of us don’t want to live in a nation of idiots.

Oh, I get where you’re coming from. It’s not for everyone.

I grew up with my musical tastes being evenly split between the New Wave and Goth bands of the 80’s and metal, so I’m familiar with it. I know some kick-ass metal chicks who are amazing singers and who have fronted bands and tried to fight the usual stereotypes, but they’re an exception, not the rule. As a whole, the genre is very sexist, so for a band like GWAR to put a woman up front is a pretty bold statement. They’re flat out saying that the best man for the job of replacing Dave Brockie is a woman.

When I talked to SPLC attorney Adam Goldstein in July, he told me the school’s case is bogus:

The school board’s policy that prevents editors from removing “redskins” in submissions to the newspaper could open up the district to legal action because it imposes an unconstitutional restriction on the students editors’ free speech, Adam Goldstein, an attorney for the Student Press Law Center, told Poynter. This rule is particularly egregious, Goldstein said, because it purports to force students to adopt a certain kind of speech. Because of this, Goldstein does not think it can survive legal challenge.

“It may be possible to get dumber people on a school board, but I don’t how you go about it,” Goldstein said.

As a long time metal fan who birthed a serious metal fan, and admitting GWAR is not my cup of tea at all (I’m more of an Iron Maiden, early Judas Priest and early Megadeth-before Mustaine lost his mind- kinda gal myself), it matters because women are not seen as being ABLE to be up front in a band. Not and be taken seriously or be successful. It’s a very sexist world, but it’s slowly changing.

I have a really soft spot in my heart for Metal because 1) We used it as part of sensory integration therapy for my son, to help with his autism. It worked so well that he no longer has problems going to public places and dealing with the accompanying lights and sounds/activity unless they are very claustrophobic and over crowded and 2) the Metal community here in Atlanta has embraced my son more than any other group of people we’ve come across. It’s not been perfect, but most of the young people he’s met have been really great. He doesn’t have close friends at this point, but they accept him and that’s been huge.

Metal, especially the more hard core kinds, are really at their base an outlet for male aggression. A place where you can safely let out anger and shitty feelings, like a pressure cooker valve. This is why I don’t freak out over my son’s growing CD collection (pushing 600) of bands with names like Cannibal Corpse, As I Lay Dying, Suicide Silence, Slipknot, etc, etc. That music has saved him from depression and anger turned inward. So if it’s a little weird or even fucked up, it’s ok. My only rule is no Skinhead/Neo Nazi metal- my son is more aware than I am of who those bands are and the people who follow them. He stays away.

He’s one of the kindest, bravest souls I know, and I’m not the only one who says that. So are most of the kids in that scene he knows.

In general, websites aren’t responsible for the things their users do or post. That’s because of a landmark federal Internet law, known as Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

The law allows sites like Yelp, Craigslist, and YouTube to host loads of user-produced content, while directing most lawsuits over that content toward the users, not the websites.

However, an appeals court ruling yesterday may join the small batch of precedents that set out the murky limits of CDA Section 230. A three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit has allowed (PDF) an alleged rape victim to sue modelmayhem.com, a site she says was used by her attackers. […]

Abortion-on-demand is (in a perfect world) how Roe v Wade is to be interpreted.

I don’t know about free.

I think that the concept would be to promote Contraceptive use to lessen the need for abortion. Abortion IS surgery and therefore has more (significant) risks and is more expensive.

While abortion does control birth, it is not Birth Control/Contraception and should not be used as such. Making it totally free lessens that distinction. I don’t see why it shouldn’t be subject to the same co-pay/deductible as other same-day surgery.

Free if the mother’s life is threatened, in cases of under-age pregnancy, Sexual Assault.

I’m thinking on a practical level here.

I had a couple girlfriends who used abortion as birth control when they were younger. Each had multiple abortions. I know the mindset exists.

Abortion done with pills is NOT surgery.

Making a distinction between birth control and abortion through pricing is unnecessary. And I did not say ‘free’. OTC is not free, as your graphic emphasizes.

I don’t like the term ‘using abortion as birth control’. Abortion is used when birth control has failed. Only sterilization has a 100% success rate. Address the failure, but don’t punish the woman by shaming her for getting pregnant. If the failure is from not trying, she needs help.

Done properly, abortion is never more risky than pregnancy and delivery.

Well, this partly explains the lengthy email we got from our middle school kid’s school that went on and on about how this isn’t a new disease. I couldn’t figure out why on earth that was important in the context of a school disease outbreak. Usually such missives go something along the lines of, “There’s an outbreak of chicken pox. Keep your children home if they exhibit signs and symptoms of chicken pox.” If nonsense sites are spreading conspiracy theories, that makes more sense. And yes, all three of my children came down with it, and no, the school does not want us to keep them home, I’m guessing because it would interfere with the NCLB attendance quotas.

Speaking of the NCLB act, on a sad but funny note, the email ended,

“Thank you again for letting us education our students.”

But, is our childrin learnin’ from you’re educationing, deer middel skule?
