Creepy Thursday Night Jam: Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, “Red Right Hand”

One microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan
Music • Views: 30,843

YouTube

This is a classic from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, a disturbing little ditty about a tall handsome man with a red right hand. I didn’t even know there was a video for this one until today, but it’s as unsettling as the song.

Take a little walk to the edge of town
Go across the tracks where the viaduct looms
Like a bird of doom as it shifts and cracks
Where secrets lie in the border fires, in the humming wires
Hey man, you know you’re never coming back
Past the square, past the bridge, past the mills, past the stacks
On a gathering storm, comes a tall handsome man
In a dusty black coat with a red right hand

He’ll wrap you in his arms
Tell you that you’ve been a good boy
He’ll rekindle all the dreams it took you a lifetime to destroy
He’ll reach deep into the hole heal your shrinking soul
Hey buddy, you know you’re never ever coming back
He’s a god, he’s a man, he’s a ghost, he’s a guru
They’re whispering his name through this disappearing land
But hidden in his coat is a red right hand

You don’t own no money? He’ll get you some
You don’t have no car? He’ll get you one
You don’t have no self-respect
You feel like an insect
Well don’t you worry buddy ‘cause here he comes
Through the ghettos and the barrio and the bowery and the slum
A shadow is cast wherever he stands
Stacks of green paper in his red right hand

You’ll see him in your nightmares
You’ll see him in your dreams
He’ll appear out of nowhere but he ain’t what he seems
You’ll see him in your head, on a TV screen
And hey buddy, I’m warning you to turn it off
He’s a ghost, he’s a god, he’s a man, he’s a guru
You’re one microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan
Designed and directed by his red right hand

This means that when you scroll down in iOS 8 Safari, you’ll now see those navigation controls pop up at the bottom of the screen automatically.

When I say I sorta understand why they made this unchangeable, I know many users want every website to behave the same way on their mobile devices, and I’m sorta cool with that.

But it means giving up something, too - the extra screen space at the top and bottom when you scroll down. I liked having that extra space, but I am just a microscopic cog in Apple’s catastrophic plan.

If it’s giving cover to a bad organization, it should be ignored. If there would be insufficient safety programs without the NRA, then there are insufficient safety programs.

As strange as it is these facts are not mutually exclusive. If you waved a magic wand and took all the NRA trainers out of the picture, there would be a larger safety problem until the vacuum was filled by others. I think understanding the difference between the NRA safety programs and classes and it’s ILA is simply to understand the reality on the ground. This is not a defense of the NRA political or lobbying side. It’s just having seen the impact of the well funded safety classes and programs.

It’s a shame that responsible gun owners blindly follow the NRA instead of other organizations that believe in real responsible gun ownership like closing gun show loopholes, gun locks, fingerprint scanning for weapons to become functional, ensuring the owner is the one using it. There are other organizations that are for owners and not a mouthpiece for manufacturers.

There is the NSSF and IDPA and others. What really is important to remember is to get the safety training to begin with and stick with what it teaches. All else is secondary to any gun owners and those around them. I left the NRA long ago and affiliated elsewhere. Thing is though those that don’t think CCW should exist or believe that we need to keep our guns at the range and not at home ever would not like those organizations either.

David Frum:

In February 1995, Bill Clinton traveled to Ottawa to speak in favor of Canadian unity. “In a world darkened by ethnic conflicts that tear nations apart, Canada stands as a model of how people of different cultures can live and work together in peace, prosperity, and mutual respect,” Clinton told the Canadian Parliament. The U.S. president was a more popular figure in Quebec than that province’s own politicians, and his words likely contributed to the narrow margin of victory of the ‘No’ side in Quebec’s second and final secession referendum later that year. President Obama has played no equivalent role in the debate over the survival of America’s close ally, the United Kingdom. If the ‘Yes’ vote prevails on September 18, Obama’s omission should be remembered in the postmortem assignment of blame for a potential disaster for the peoples of Britain, Europe, and the Western alliance.

Yes a little. accepted. However I think that low number to be very indicative. Congress has a higher approval rating than that. Okay kidding there but you see what I mean. And as for gun owner politics, well there may be far more liberal gun owners than you think.

Quoth Memory Alpha:

The Constitution-class was capable of a similar emergency maneuver when trapped in orbit. By discarding the nacelles, the ship was better able to rocket back into space under impulse power.

In 2267, Captain James T. Kirk considered a plan wherein chief engineer Montgomery Scott would discard the warp drive nacelles and escape with the main section when the original USS Enterprise was threatened by Vaal at Gamma Trianguli VI. Ultimately, the separation was never ordered. (TOS: “The Apple”)

Kirk attempted to order Scott to disengage nacelles, and jettison if possible, in 2269, while the ship was in orbit of Excalbia, but the transmission was cut-off before the order was received. (TOS: “The Savage Curtain”)

So for the past maybe 2 - 2 1/2 month (?) I’ve been planning my first solo vacation trip for my birthday (Nov 5th). I decided to make my first trip to Hawaii. So I’ve been researching and looking for deals and just hashing out all the prep for it.

I’ve been doing it piecemeal…first I bought my plane tickets (leaving out of Oakland via New Orleans) that was in July. I’ve been planning and plotting my itinerary and last night I finally booked and paid for the hotels i will stay at.

The trip will be a total of 11 days…2 nights in Oakland at the beginning, then 3 nights in Honolulu on Waikiki Beach (I wanted to spend my actual birthday on the beach doing absolutely nothing), then travel to the Big Island for 4 night to basically go to Volcano National Park, then back to Oakland for one night, then back home to New Orleans. So all told, it will be a total of 8 days, 7 nights in Hawaii.

I’ve booked all the hotels and now it’s on to mapping out what activities I want to do while i’m on each Island.

As i said, this is my first foray into solo travelling, so I’m being very particular and trying to “plan”, I prefer to leave as little to chance as possible, particularly since I will really only be there a short week.

Anyway, like i said been planning this since July and now in just 6 short weeks, I’ll be in Hawaii with an Oceanfront view! I’m getting really excited now!

Leave a little wiggle room. You’ll find brochures at the hotel for things you won’t necessarily find online (submarine ride, luau’s, deep-sea fishing, and the like. FYI, those were things I did in HI.) and you might find something cool you want to do once you get there.

FWIW, I’ve traveled the world alone and I LOVE IT! No one to make happy, I get to be completely selfish and do whatever the heck I want!

As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m working on a post-baccalaureate certificate in Accounting from a university here in Virginia. The requirements for the certificate is 8 upper-level (junior or senior level) accounting courses and 8 upper-level general business courses, which are the same requirements to qualify to take the CPA exam in Virginia.

One of the business courses the college recommends is “Organization Behavior”. The college’s course catalog describes the course as: “Introduction to the determinants and consequences of human behavior and task performance in an organizational setting. Topics include motivation, job design, group development, organizational design, communication, leadership and change.”

In short, the course is bullshit, but one of the most absurd things I’ve even seen in college was on a slide tonight in a chapter about “organizational commitment”. Here’s a scan of the book presenting the same information:

Am I the only person that finds it offensive as hell that you’re calling someone who does a good job but might not be committed to the organization a “lone wolf”? Is there a modern usage of that word that doesn’t automatically remind you of its use to describe terrorists?

Are the “lone wolves” in a company sitting in their cubicles with AK-47s preparing to take out half the company or something?

I’m not the type to promote conspiracy theories, but I swear, the only inference that I can draw from this course is that if you don’t adopt an organization’s culture and aren’t committed to the organization, you’re a loathsome piece of shit whom we’re going to fire a the first opportunity.

And if you’re pressured into adopting the organization’s culture and being committed to the organization, you should be happy that the company is paying you a shit wage, otherwise you’re not committed nor supporting the organization’s culture, which makes you a loathsome piece of shit whom we’re going to fire a the first opportunity.

I swear, it seems the whole course is designed to make you happy you’re going to be a wage slave the rest of your life.

Were they deprived of rights to full economic participation or to have a voice in local government? Deprived of a vote? Gerrymandered and diluted? Were they prohibited across three hundred years from participation in all levels of leadership of the UK Military? I’m just not seeing the reason for nationalist whining and don’t see how dividing the world into tribal enclaves (particularly the white parts, because white tribalists tend to act like assholes toward out-groups) is a good thing.

Of course, your mileage may vary. In the end, the blacks, Muslims, Jews and Hispanics of Texas will probably appreciate my disdain for secessionists.

One more thing - it was a shitty trick to try and bring brainless 16 year old passion in.

Could be really bad luck or it could be something you are doing. My macbook around the same vintage has a tendency to run really hot which can do bad things to hard drive life. If you use it on a surface that isn’t conducive to cooling like say in bed or on the couch, or on your lap it could be a factor. Or if you are ungentle with it that doesn’t help either :)

You can always try an SSD drive, no moving parts, less prone to failure.

I’m running my original hard drive (computer from 2007? can’t remember). I’ve always used one of those “fan-stands,” and a system preference called “fan control” which will tell you what temperatures you’re running. If you can track it down (as I recall, it was free), it might help. Could just be three bad drives, of course.

It has been running kid of hot in the last year, even after I replaced the HD the firsr time. Maybe that’s what did it. What can be done to help this?

As I’ve watched the Roosevelts on PBS I’m once again wishing my parents were still alive. So many questions I wish I could ask them. I remember growing up that my staunch Republican parents hated FDR - I heard that so often but I never really knew why. Politics mean nothing to a little kid so it was never questioned.

Yet, watching this series I see so many things that FDR was responsible for that my parents were totally for. Working for the WPA building roads allowed my grandfather, a Missouri dairy farmer, to feed his 9 children during the drought. I remember fearfully asking Mom and Dad about the depression, having heard their horror stories, and they reassured me it couldn’t happen again because there were now laws and programs that wouldn’t let it - FDR made those happen. They were absolutely supportive of unemployment, social security, and other New Deal social programs.

They did strongly hint that they believed FDR allowed the Pearl Harbor attack, that he knew in advance, so he could get us into the war. Yet neither ever expressed that fighting Germany, in particular, was ever a mistake. In reality, it was WWII that saved both of my parents and gave them a future and good lives. It gave my mom an escape from the farm and life as an uneducated “brood mare” (her term) and the VA paid for my dad’s education and provided affordable loans for our family homes.

So many questions…

I imagine independence movements the world over, but particularly in Europe, were watching the results of this referendum closely. No doubt more than a few fellows in the EU will breath easier now that they don’t have to worry about what to do with an independent Scotland as well as all the separatists in other EU nations who’d cite the success there as reason to stage their own referendums.

I thought it would be much closer as well - somewhere in the range of almost 50-50 split. Salmond simply failed to seal the deal by leaving far too many questions unanswered, and those were very serious questions as well, such as currency, NATO, the EU, etc.

Economic matters played a big part in this, I’m sure. And Salmond failed to answer a lot of those questions adequately beyond breezy assurances.

Like I said, he sold the sizzle, but he forgot to sell the steak.

281 sagehen  Sep 19, 2014 1:00:03am

Or maybe just the idea that late-campaign discussions about the pound, the EU and NATO, and Salmond blithely assuring everyone that “oh, that’ll be settled later, we’ll negotiate and I’m sure it’ll come out okay…” gave all the undecideds a general sense that some real basic facets of transition hadn’t been carefully thought through.

It seems that Eric Frein, the man wanted for the ambush slaying of a Pennsylvania state trooper and critically wounding another, has been added to the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted list.

Eric Matthew Frein is being sought in every “state, territory (and) possession of the United States,” but investigators believe he hasn’t strayed far from home.

Just hours after announcing the man suspected of killing one trooper and wounding another one week ago is now one of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted, police shut down roads leading to Mr. Frein’s Pocono Outpost neighborhood in Canadensis to search for him. The roads reopened about 9 p.m., but officials gave few details on why police were there and what they may have found.

A lot of noise about the Loyalists (sic) decreasing one funeral at a time, but this was a shellacking. The SNP has to put forward a coherent vision of how and why an independent Scotland can function in a modern world.

Sounds right and no, you’re not being unfair to the isolationists at all. The Nazis were attacking people on the streets of Germany. There’s an excellent book about the first American ambassador to Nazi Germany called In the Garden of the Beasts. Karl Marx famously observed that religion was the opiate of the masses, meaning that it provided an escape from the harsh realities of life. This may well be true, but looking at the conflicts arising in the Middle East these days, I’m inclined to observe that religion is the amphetamine of the masses.
[…]
It is also no use trying to play one Muslim off against another — or to accept with an easy nod the soothing reassurances of the “good Muslims” that the Islamists are in error and do not truly represent Islam. Who says? Council after council anathematized those it deemed “heretics”; the Pope said the same thing about Elizabeth I; American Baptists distance themselves from the folks in Westboro; the Global South Anglicans will condemn Episcopalians as apostates. These divisions of opinion do not mark the boundary between true and false religion — or if they do, who is to decide which side is right? One chooses one’s side based one’s own understanding of what is right and just and true — but so do they all, excepting the odd occasional cynic who might just be doing it all for political gain; and I think every side may have one or more such game-players.

So I hate to be the bearer of bad news to those who think that “good” religion will solve the problems of the current world crisis. Religion isn’t the solution; it is the problem. Christians trying to be sweet and reasonable by saying to Jews and Muslims, “We all worship the same God” is really a bit condescending, and ultimately false, since only some nominal Christians are willing to soft-pedal the orthodox notion that Jesus is God — so not really quite the same as the God of Judaism or Islam, at least from their point of view.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. In a follow up to the reports yesterday of a mass shooting in Florida, we’re learning more about the shooter and his background.

While the Star Ledger leads with the New Jersey angle (he was originally from NJ), the real story is that the guy had a prior gun conviction, had killed a child previously, and apparently called in the shooting to police himself before committing suicide.

The 51-year-old man called 911 on Thursday afternoon to say he might harm himself or others, Gilchrist County Sheriff Robert Schultz said, according to the Associated Press.

Spirit reportedly committed suicide when a deputy arrived at the scene, which is about two hours from Orlando. Authorities then found the seven victims “all over on the property,” Schultz said, according to the AP.

Spirit pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in 2003 following the fatal shooting of his 8-year-old son in a 2001 hunting accident.

Let that all sink in.

1) he somehow obtained yet another gun, despite being a convicted felon.
2) he had previously killed his 8-year-old son in a hunting accident in 2001.
3) he called 911 warning he was about to do harm to himself or others.

He likely had mental health issues, which only compounds the deadly fact that he still somehow obtained a firearm. Can’t wait to see where the investigation into that goes.

Drudge apparently finds this story unimportant, but the freak incident involving a cyclist hitting a pedestrian in NYC and the pedestrian is now brain dead gets a link. It’s all about priorities. Misinformation. Obfuscation.

One criticism that I have of the referendum in hindsight is this: it seems to me that such fundamental decisions, that influence the state of the country for centuries to come, should not be made by merely 50%+1. 2/3, “the absolute majority”, to change the status quo seems to be more reasonable to me.

338 HappyWarrior  Sep 19, 2014 6:00:29am

I actually thought the YES vote would be higher in Scotland personally. I think perhaps there was some underestimating on the SNP’s part of the ties that I think many Scots feel with the UK as seen by the fact they themselves weren’t ready to do away entirely with the royals etc. I wonder how such a referendum would have fared in Ireland in 1914. It arguably took the Easter Rising’s aftermath note not the Rising itself to make the majority of the Irish people to want independence from Britain. We ourselves were a divided nation on the question of independence. I believe Adams stated that 1/3 were in favor of being independent, the other 1/3 staying with the British, and the other third undecided.

The latest candidate to sign up for the hard-fought America’s Dumbest Congressman competition is Republican Mark Walker, who’s running for North Carolina’s deep-red 6th Congressional district. Walker is the one who previously vowed that he would impeach Barack Obama, if given the chance, and is generally of the Michele Bachmann “you must be this paranoid to enter Congress” wing of the party, worried about Sharia law and/or Obama declaring martial law and/or whatever else you got. You know, a tea partier.

But I don’t think that prepared any of us for the revelation that Mark Walker’s answer to undocumented immigrants is to “go laser or blitz somebody” in Mexico, as he told a local Rockingham County tea party group called Will of the People on June 26th of this year. Ye Gods, man.

Yet, there are people here in the US who think that they’d be better off splitting from the US. New poll says 34% of those in the Southwest would want to split from the US.

They have no idea that most of the states that want to split actually get more from the federal government than they pay in. They’d lose big on the proposition, but that isn’t stopping them from complaining. A lot of it is ginned up from anti-Obama sentiment especially among GOPers.

Yesterday, aagcobb posted some comments on how to fix the voting situation in the country, and I never got a chance to respond in the thread.

My take?

It involves shifting when elections are held. Midterm congressional elections will stay where they are, but municipal 4 year terms will be shifted so that they coincide with presidential election years. All primaries in the state will coincide with the election days set for those presidential election years.

That means that school districts wont have separate election dates where there’s minimal turnout on who decides what the budgets will be, voting on the budgets themselves, etc. A lot of districts hold those elections at random dates when there’s little chance anyone is paying attention, let alone voting on these budgets that ultimately affect home prices and desirability to live in localities.

It would mean that you maximize turnout on elections at all levels and people are most focused on politics.

Oh, and I’d scrap the idea that we need to have a staggered primary election where Iowa and New Hampshire lead the primaries, though I know that a lot of states wouldn’t go for that since they’d lose what little influence they have on the process already. Hold all the primaries on the same day. And yes, that would mean that candidates would end up focusing on the big states rather than the little ones. But that’s the same strategy it takes to win in November. Alternatively, condense all the primaries into a 2 week period - allow IA and NH to lead, but then have Super Tuesday and Super Thursday or what have you. It could potentially result in less money spent on elections and campaigning since the condensed period reduces the time candidates have to message.

re: #359 lawhawk

Yet, there are people here in the US who think that they’d be better off splitting from the US. New poll says 34% of those in the Southwest would want to split from the US.

They have no idea that most of the states that want to split actually get more from the federal government than they pay in. They’d lose big on the proposition, but that isn’t stopping them from complaining. A lot of it is ginned up from anti-Obama sentiment especially among GOPers.

But cold facts don’t beat hot tempers and hate.

I would sorely like to see the newly independent Deseret try to continue to keep up the federal water projects that keep their shitty little communities from drying up (further) and blowing away.

What to make of that poll?

For starters, people began seeing more and more waste at the federal level during the Bush administration (rising from about 45% to 50%, but it’s held steady under the Obama Administration (bouncing between 50 and 51%).

In other words, the concern has pretty much peaked. But what could possibly account for all the “waste” that people are so concerned with? A huge new bureaucracy that largely came into existence after 2001 might have something to do with it - DHS. Or actual waste revealed during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the tune of tens of billions of dollars.

Or it’s the GOP playing up waste and inefficiency, but despite all those claims during the current administration, the numbers haven’t budged.

Guess which one with the GOP will likely play up.

“Waste” is a subjective concept in any case. Lots of people see money spent on enforcing safety and environmental regulations as wasted, other see money spent on research and education as wasted.

And others see any money not spent on getting wasted as “wasted”…

She wants to make Muslims responsible for the Holocaust & antisemitism, never mind that antisemitism stretches back to ancient Egypt and has a nasty, centuries-long history in Europe.

Or for that matter that antisemitism as we know it today—as opposed to the older type of discrimination that pretty much any minority group faced in ancient times—started well before Islam with the advent of Christianity and the drive for converts to the new religion.

The most vicious forms of European antisemitism like pogroms, blood libels, etc. really began to come into their own around the time of the Crusades, with many Jews fleeing to Muslim lands. Life for Jews in Muslim lands was far from perfect, but for the most part it wasn’t anywhere near as dangerous as living in Europe. Hell, even the Reformation that everyone is so proud of involved antisemitism. Has anyone taken a look at Martin Luther’s On the Jews and Their Lies treatise?

In the treaties he argues that their synagogues and schools be set on fire, their prayer books destroyed, rabbis forbidden to preach, homes razed, and property and money confiscated. They should be shown no mercy or kindness, afforded no legal protection, and these “poisonous envenomed worms” should be drafted into forced labor or expelled for all time. He also seems to advocate their murder, writing “[w]e are at fault in not slaying them”.

Song of Joy: Creepy Friday

Youtube Video

It was midnight when I arrived home
Said to the police on the telephone
Someone’s taken four innocent lives

They never caught the man
He’s still on the loose
It seems he has done many many more
Quotes John Milton on the walls in the victim’s blood
The police are investigating at tremendous cost
In my house he wrote “his red right hand”
That, I’m told is from Paradise Lost

Indeed, it is so. Paradise Lost, Book 2, Lines 160-174:

Say they who counsel war; we are decreed,
Reserved, and destined to eternal woe;
Whatever doing, what can we suffer more,
What can we suffer worse? Is this, then, worst,
Thus sitting, thus consulting, thus in arms?
What when we fled amain, pursued and struck
With Heaven’s afflicting thunder, and besought
The Deep to shelter us? This Hell then seemed
A refuge from those wounds. Or when we lay
Chained on the burning lake? That sure was worse.
What if the breath that kindled those grim fires,
Awaked, should blow them into sevenfold rage,
And plunge us in the flames; or from above
Should intermitted vengeance arm again
His red right hand to plague us?

First paragraph on a site I will not link to:

From Peshawar Pakistan to Nairobi Kenya, from Damascus Syria to Benghazi Libya, Muslims are on a killing rampage. The civilized world is shocked and distressed. Some mutation seems to take place in the humanness of the person the minute he announces his subservience to Islam by reciting the Shahada: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger.” The individual becomes intolerant, violent and the shedding of blood becomes central to his life.

The whole ebloa + jihadis sneaking across the Mexican border thing is reminiscent of accusations of well-poisoning and blaming Jews for the Black Death, which led to the Strasbourg pogrom on Valentine’s Day in 1349, during which hundreds of Jews were publicly burned to death—on their sabbath:

Jewish History Sourcebook:
The Black Death and the Jews 1348-1349 CE

In 1348 there appeared in Europe a devastating plague which is reported to have killed off ultimately twenty-five million people. By the fall of that year the rumor was current that these deaths were due to an international conspiracy of Jewry to poison Christendom. It was reported that the leaders in the Jewish metropolis of Toledo had initiated the plot and that one of the chief conspirators was a Rabbi Peyret who had his headquarters in Chambéry, Savoy, whence he dispatched his poisoners to France, Switzerland, and Italy. […]

The Jews Are Burnt

On Saturday - that was St. Valentine’s Day-they burnt the Jews on a wooden platform in their cemetery. There were about two thousand people of them. Those who wanted to baptize themselves were spared. [Some say that about a thousand accepted baptism.] Many small children were taken out of the fire and baptized against the will of their fathers and mothers. And everything that was owed to the Jews was cancelled, and the Jews had to surrender all pledges and notes that they had taken for debts. The council, however, took the cash that the Jews possessed and divided it among the working-men proportionately. The money was indeed the thing that killed the Jews. If they had been poor and if the feudal lords had not been in debt to them, they would not have been burnt. After this wealth was divided among the artisans some gave their share to the Cathedral or to the Church on the advice of their confessors.

Thus were the Jews burnt at Strasbourg, and in the same year in all the cities of the Rhine, whether Free Cities or Imperial Cities or cities belonging to the lords. In some towns they burnt the Jews after a trial, in others, without a trial. In some cities the Jews themselves set fire to their houses and cremated themselves. […]

Yesterday, aagcobb posted some comments on how to fix the voting situation in the country, and I never got a chance to respond in the thread.

My take?

It goes beyond primary power. The states rake in a ton of cash, and since cash is king, there is no way the states would go for that. I don’t think any of them care as much about the candidates at all. But that lost revenue? No way they would give that up.

Over the past fifty years, an ideological revolution has created a brand of radical leftism that now dominates the liberal movement in the United States. The values espoused by the left today are a far cry from the traditional progressive and Enlightenment values that have historically defined the movement.

Barry Rubin argues that, after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989, the survivors of the ’60s New Left drew on the ideas of radicals like Saul Alinsky, cultural Marxists like Antonio Gramsci, and Third World revolutionary thinkers like Frantz Fanon to create a Third Left: a radical movement that championed a new class of experts and managers to seize control from within. Silent Revolution explores the formation and ideology of The Third Left and documents how this movement culminated in 2008, when Americans elected the most radical left-wing government in their history.

Concise and hard-hitting, Silent Revolution is a must for all conservatives looking to understand and overcome American liberalism.

It’s just not good beer.

Our drummer brought us each a tall boy can of PBR to rehearsal last week. By the time I finished it, I had the most slamming headache I’ve had in years.

I do believe I’ve ruined my relationship with crappy domestic beer. Budweiser gives me headaches, too.

Which is okay. I do not miss drinking either of them.

The Shoebats don’t care for Glenn Beck, it seems:

Yesterday’s TruNews radio broadcast with Rick Wiles was entirely dedicated to an interview with right-wing anti-Islam activist Walid Shoebat and his son Theodore during which the three of them attacked … Glenn Beck!

That’s right, according to the Shoebats, Beck is a practitioner of “Chrislam,” meaning that he is luring his audience away from true Christianity and into a dangerous Islamo-Mormon deistic universalism with the help of Religious Right leaders such as James Robison, Franklin Graham, and David Barton.

Palin Threatens to Renounce Republican Ties.

Former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin threatened to renounce all Republican Party ties this morning if another day passes without Palin-related press.

“If I don’t see one article a day,” she threatened, “I am a Republican no more.”

This would have drastic effects for the Republican Party, as Palin identifies as Republican not just on the back cover of her memoir but also every time that she orders coffee from small independently-owned coffee shops in Alaska.

“I will update my Wikipedia page,” she elaborated, “if I don’t see at least one blurb about mine truly on CNN every day.”

Mentions of Walid Shoebat reminded me of a story I was following a few years back: Rifqa Bary, a Muslim girl who ran away from home, befriended Christian ministers and converted to fundamentalist Christianity. Pamela Geller was involved as a peripheral putter-oner-of-gasoline-on religious-fires, and got sued for defamation.

The Orlando Sentinel had a update on Bary in July. She’s a college student, has not reconciled with her parents in Ohio, and is now some kind of evangelist. articles.orlandosentinel.com

Her whereabouts are being kept secret.

Hey! That’s the story I was following that brought me to Little Green Footballs. I was downtown (Columbus) by the Courthouse where the custody trial between Rifqa and her parents was going on and I about ran into this one jerk protester who was holding a big sign and leading some kind of chant. He about fell back off the curb into my path. I stopped and he gave me a strange look.

A day or so later, I was on the ‘net checking out the whole story and came across a picture of one Robert Spencer at the protest. That’s the dude I almost hit!!!

Then I did a search on Spencer and one link led me to here, where I think there was a page on the Bary trial in Columbus.

I did a quick search for the photo I saw of Spencer. I’m not sure if this is the exact one but one from the same day, as that is how he looked. I’m posting the image here and using the caption that was at the site the picture was at…it is appropriate.

The portly fellow on the phone is Robert Spencer, the wing nutty author well known for spreading misinformation and hatred of Islam.

littlegreenfootballs.com

I also note that WP provides an older, exaggerated estimate (250,000) while newer estimates, based on the Höfle telegram, are around 180,000.

WP also gets this wrong:

Save for the testimonies of the few survivors, who could only provide scant recollections of small areas of the camp, Sobibor had been lost to history.

But of course aside from numerous testimonies of the Jews who had escaped from the camp, there were also very valuable and numerous testimonies of the Nazis and Ukrainian auxiliaries, who described the operations of the camp in detail.

I blame the internet. We had succeeded in marginalizing racism and misogyny, and were on the way to marginalizing homophobia, but the internet has provided a soap box and gathering place for racists, misogynists and homophobes to express their hatred and receive approval and encouragement. Combine this with AM Hate Radio and Fox News, and you have a system for re-normalizing all those things we thought we’d outgrown.

Too much progress is being stripped away daily. All this abortion shit. Birth control, for cripes sake. Too many people see us as better off being chattel, property of the male in our lives.

All the while complaining about Sharia law, which cultural bullshit imposed by various Muslim societies…for doing what Christian conservatives so desperately want to do to us.

When people talk about dying for a cause, let me tell you, that is a cause I will die for. Try to make me property, make some male my overlord, force me into that kind of subservience. That, to me, is something worth dying for.

The 6 plus isn’t a phone. It’s a phablet. At that size, I’d argue you can’t really use it as a phone anymore - and it certainly wont fit in a pocket anymore.

The best can do right now is to encourage women to register and vote.

I, myself, don’t get the phablet. But I’m looking forward to seeing the new iPhone 6…holding it to see how it feels in my hand.

Maybe once it’s out, iOS 8 will be better.

I won’t be upgrading for a while, but when I do, I don’t know if I’ll go for an iPhone 6 Plus-size device.

Just for fun, I dropped in Photoshop the line drawings of the different phones Apple has on their website. I’m currently using a 5s, with 4” screen.

The entire freaking 5s fits inside the display of the 6 Plus. I may swing by an Apple Store later to get a feel for how big these things are. I really think we’re approaching “unwieldy” size here.

621 lawhawk  Sep 19, 2014 10:27:21am

Someone page Max Brooks, because I think it’s time people reread WWZ (skip the movie) for what it can tell us about how to handle pandemics.

CDC worst case estimate puts 550,000 infected by January 2015.

The WHO and several other studies put the worst case far lower, but still pretty dangerous - 20,000 cases before being brought under control.

A separate worst-case scenario modeled last month by researchers at the University of Tokyo and Arizona State University predicted there would be as many as 277,124 new cases by the year’s end.

That was the high end of their estimate, though the researchers warned that “uncontrolled cross-border transmission could fuel a major epidemic to take off in new geographical areas.”

Columbia University researchers predicted 18,755 cases by Oct. 26 if the situation didn’t change, and 49,129 if intervention and containment efforts degraded.

And people wonder why President Obama sent 3,000 troops to help with logistics, training, and hands-off assistance?

MSF/DWB is overwhelmed by the pandemic, and they’re among the best able to deliver resources to the area among the charities. The national health systems in the affected countries was never that good to begin with, but this pandemic is pushing them to the brink.

I’ve never been an early adopter, so that kind of stuff leaves me mystified. New phones, new OS’s, new movies - lots and lots of people are willing to pay a lot in money, time, and discomfort to be the first.

My view is if it’s good, it’ll still be good in a few days weeks, or months, when I can get it cheaper and more easily. It’s like food fads - if a certain style of food is good, it is still good after it’s no longer in vogue.

Well it’s from 800 years ago.

I remember that scene in Borat where he got a bunch of drunken rednecks to sing along with him.

That photo is horrifying. Because, not only were people put down the well, they seem to have been “tamped” in—for maximum volume.

I was foolish enough to believe that we made progress over the last three decades. Reading post after post after tweet after…everything, I see how much misogyny is still part and parcel of the US psyche, along with extreme racism and homophobia, frek, everything “other” to the old white male (usually Christian) dominators.

It’s frekking depressing.

We certainly cannot take any gains in minority, women’s or gay rights for granted, there are too many people working hard to revoke them all.

Long time Apple user here, and I do the exact thing. I don’t care who the company is; buying a point-zero release is essentially saying “Yes, I’ll be a beta tester, even though you’re supposed to be out of beta by now. SO SHUT AND TAKE MY MONEY!”

I’ve got a Motorola Razr Maxx, while the Mrs. has the Razr (earlier version). Mine is significantly bigger than hers, and I wouldn’t go for anything bigger. It becomes too unwieldy and the screen size is sufficient (4.3 inches) for mobile tasks.

After having a Catholic High School class reunion, they decided to beat the crap out of two guys going out for pizza who are in a relationship. I love it that social media got them all busted for being criminal douchebags. I hope they all get the maximum punishment. One of them was a coach at a Catholic school, who got fired. Good.

I blame Reagan and the bully talibangelicals and racists he unleashed. That was the beginning.

A coworker has a Samsung Galaxy of some sort. I saw her talking on it, and I remembered, when the first iPads came out and people were bitching that there was no phone, joking about how stupid you’d look, holding that big thing up to your ear. That’s what it looked like to me.

We’re re-fighting battles that were won long ago because a substantial portion of the American people have chosen faith-based willful ignorance as a way of life. Now that their choice has worked out so badly for them they want to turn back time in the only ways their political and religious leaders tell them they can. The faith-based willfully ignorant have formed a Cargo Cult that seems to believe that if the most visible social changes are reversed they’ll once again be on top. They never were, they never will be.

Seriously, though - you can probably go back to the crushing defeat of Barry Goldwater (or even farther) and Johnson’s embrace of civil rights for the seeds of Modern Neoconfederate Conservatism. That much hatred and ignorance was not going to stay bottled up forever.

YUP. Those who cannot embrace change will become victims of it.

Some seem to think that “embrace” means taking it by the reins and reversing course —or at least steering it to their benefit.

Why would they? It works for them, and nobody holds them accountable. I know we’re supposed to honor the brave soldiers of the Confederacy, fighting for a cause they believed in, but I’m sorry - to me they were a bunch of gullible chumps, who fought for the single worst cause for which any American soldiers ever took up arms, and one of the worst causes for which ANY soldiers ANYWHERE, at ANY time took up arms.

What to make of that poll?

The Federal Government wastes a ton of money by doing things in and for states I don’t care about, or helping people I’d never have to see.

My State wastes a moderate amount, by doing things for the burbs, or hundreds of miles away, upstate.

My local government wastes hardly anything. Some of what they do could be done a little more cost-effectively, I suppose, but every single day I can see with my own eyes things they’re doing to make my life more comfortable. That’s money well spent.

A useful predator since it stops the shoes from multiplying and taking over the Earth. Look how they accumulate and multiply in some closets - a place the shoe bats can’t get to easily.
