You may recall this LGF post from a couple of weeks ago, in which we called out right wing smear artist Chuck C. Johnson (most recently infamous for alleging — with no evidence — that Ferguson teenager Michael Brown had been involved in a second degree murder while a juvenile) for linking to a really nasty homophobic article at racist website Takimag: Blogger Chuck C. Johnson Hypes Ugly Anti-Gay Article at White Nationalist Website.

When it was pointed out to him that Takimag is an overtly racist site, with a list of absolutely horrible white nationalist and antisemitic contributors, he responded by saying he was just “exploring different ideas.”

Well, he seems to have decided now that he likes those “different ideas,” because today he’s crowing about an article at Takimag that defends him against people who criticized him for his disgusting comments about beheaded journalist James Foley:

Maybe it’s just me, but it doesn’t seem very smart to boast that white nationalists and far right racists think you’re groovy.

The older boy’s girlfriend comes from a VERY conservative family - so much so that she has not yet introduced him to them. If this goes on, and they eventually tie the knot, I foresee a really tense set of social events around the wedding. The older boy is not good at holding stuff in, and has that Aspergerian difficulty understanding the failure of others to see what he finds so obvious.

I wouldn’t want to be him at Thanksgivings with her family!

Doesn’t help that you have “intellectual conservative” mags like NR that happily employ white nationalists for them. Conservatives and conservatism needs to some deep soul searching about their ideology and what it will mean to be a conservative in the 21st century. Got a new one here at the park who keeps trying to befriend me - I’m thinking she wants more than a platonic friendship (which I have no interest in pursuing) and it entirely creeps me out. Not because of her presumed sexuality but because she projects a very violent nature. And she’s an idiot.

Yeah I just don’t get that line of thinking. Why stay loyal to a party that has no respect for your values. You don’t like Obama, fine, but continuing to vote for the GOP and support GOP candidates even though you know they’re off their rocker? I don’t get it. By the way for those of you watching the Roosevelts. My username is somewhat of a tribute to Al Smith. I appreciate his contribution to Irish-Americans and Catholics in American politics and being a wet when it was very unpopular to do so but it’s more a tribute to Herbert Humphrey who in his own words urged the Democratic Party to leave the sunshine of states rights and enter the sunshine of human rights at the 1948 DNC. So yeah. Al Smith is still an interesting guy though he did become very bitter towards FDR.

It really has gotten crazy and I see no end to it. Obama could resign tomorrow. I have to admit that I did get very lucky. We got married relatively young by today’s standards but we had dated for a couple of years.

You know, I have never had a piece of shoo-fly pie. And I grew up in an area where there were many Amish/Mennonites.

My mother, a 100% German farm-girl, was a hell of a pie and cookie maker. But she never made them or pecan pie. I’m thinking they were just too sweet for her tastes. I think she did make all the others but her cream pies were to die for. Her fruit pies were pretty damn good, but she killed cream pies of all kinds.

I think she did make all the others but her cream pies were to die for. Her fruit pies were pretty damn good, but she killed cream pies of all kinds.

I enjoy my fruit pies the best. I have done some cream pies, and also the extremely gooey sweet like pecan & shoofly (which I don’t make any more) but my favorites are Blueberry, Apple and (today’s) Key Lime.

But also, I grew up in an area full of Mennonites, Brethren, and even a few Amish, and we attended a Mennonite church, so I was exposed to a number of the old Mennonite recipes.

The conservatives of those times were the ones championing absolute monarchy “because that’s all we’ve known and it works.”

It’s an incredibly low number that gets you into the top 1%. The incredibly low number in that article is what income level it takes to get into top 50% of income about 34k. Even including home equity, I’d be surprised that most people have more than a couple hundred thousand. There are a lot of people with nothing for retirement savings.

We’re having people over for dinner this weekend, one of whom is a wingnut of rather epic proportions. I just found out he’s a birther too. Damn it. My husband’s says something like “birth registration notice”. I have copies of all of them in my kitchen office.

My one cousin lately has been using Facebook to demonstrate his abject ignorance and the barely hidden racism that unfortunately informs that side of the family:

• Quasi-birther post showing Uncle Sam praying the next POTUS is an American who will defend the US. I pointed out the current POTUS is and took out Bin Laden, among others. No comment from him.

• Pulling the false balance card with the Ferguson shootings (“We need to hear both sides of the story before we judge”)

• Went full metal Truther on 9/11 and defended it by claiming to be just asking questions and questioning authority.

He never graduated high school and was a shitty student all around, and it’s showing. I may skip the family Xmas party this year.

If you don’t mind saying, where did you grow up GeneJockey?

I’m from north central Ohio and there were/are many Amish and Mennonites in that area. I was on an old race forum back in the late 90s and there was a teacher from out in the Calgary Canada area that taught at a Mennonite school. He told me that there are more Mennonites in Ohio than anywhere else. I told him I was surprised there were Mennonites in Calagary.

Many people think Pennsylvania is the largest home to Amish, but I’ve been told Ohio has more. I don’t know, but I always liked going by some areas of Ohio that still look like the 1800s…like the farms around Shreve.

And just like my mothers side of the family…there are tons of Germans that came to America in the mid-1800s and bought property and set up farms. So, the whole area I grew up in still had many great old world foods traditions and life styles.

I miss the old Catholic Church Festival at my mothers old home and farm area. That was some great food as it was all fresh off the farm, cleaned, prepared and cooked by the local German ladies.

Yep. I’m 54, my husband is 47. We have about 2K in a 401K. The first one lost 65K in the crash, and then when he lost his job we had to cash out the rest of it so we wouldn’t lose everything. We have some equity in our home, but we had to refinance a couple of times (and we didn’t use our house as an ATM, we have a non variable rate mortgage ) and so that effects things.

We don’t live like kings at all. The only actual splurge thing we have is a Harley but I can’t get my husband to even think of selling it (which would get us almost out of all our debt besides the house, but that’s a whole other issue, GRRRRR). We don’t spend money, mostly because we don’t have it. I drive a compact car, my husband has a work truck. We can’t even afford to insure our kid so he can drive. It wasn’t always like this, my husband was a middle management guy, making 6 figures. Until 2008 when after 15 yrs the company let him go without so much as a warning it was coming. In fact, they led him to believe he was next in line for a VP job with them. Since then, he’s been making less than half of that, he had to go back to being a blue collar worker, the kind of work he used to be the boss of.

I suspect we’re not alone at all in that. But I wake up sometimes scared shitless that we’re going to end up homeless and our son will have no one to help him if something happens to us. (he has Asperger’s Syndrome) It wasn’t supposed to turn out like this. We did all the things you’re “supposed” to do and it got us nowhere.

Yep. I’m 54, my husband is 47. We have about 2K in a 401K. The first one lost 65K in the crash, and then when he lost his job we had to cash out the rest of it so we wouldn’t lose everything. We have some equity in our home, but we had to refinance a couple of times (and we didn’t use our house as an ATM, we have a non variable rate mortgage ) and so that effects things.

We don’t live like kings at all. The only actual splurge thing we have is a Harley but I can’t get my husband to even think of selling it (which would get us almost out of all our debt besides the house, but that’s a whole other issue, GRRRRR). We don’t spend money, mostly because we don’t have it. I drive a compact car, my husband has a work truck. We can’t even afford to insure our kid so he can drive. It wasn’t always like this, my husband was a middle management guy, making 6 figures. Until 2008 when after 15 yrs the company let him go without so much as a warning it was coming. In fact, they led him to believe he was next in line for a VP job with them. Since then, he’s been making less than half of that, he had to go back to being a blue collar worker, the kind of work he used to be the boss of.

I suspect we’re not alone at all in that. But I wake up sometimes scared shitless that we’re going to end up homeless and our son will have no one to help him if something happens to us. (he has Asperger’s Syndrome) It wasn’t supposed to turn out like this. We did all the things you’re “supposed” to do and it got us nowhere.

You are not alone. There are many going through tough times. There are many sleepless nights in America. I sure as hell wished the Republicans and others realized how some people really see things.

Unfortunately I have a story very similar as do many, many more Americans today. The middle class was heavily damaged in 2008 - 2010 and it isn’t recovering in a meaningful way. We did most of the “right” things (marriage, home ownership, etc.) and got kicked in the butt anyway.
I get frustrated when so many won’t see that a large part of the problem is the GOP and their hatred for our president.

Not saying that there isn’t a smattering of delusional true believers in the free market baby jeebus but for the most part, these guys are part of the wealth machine, in place to keep the wealth exactly where it is and if possible funnel new sources and old sources of wealth into their hands. Admittance to the club is difficult to obtain and as such, most of the GOP legislators knew that they can be the first off the ship if the tune isn’t danced to properly. Fortunately for them, real revolutions aren’t commonplace or else there would be a lot more heads on pikes.

Both sets of numbers are low. I at least had some familiarity with the income numbers, but the wealth ones are also staggeringly low to me.

I can certainly see that living in a high cost of living area can make the numbers seem low but many people are still underwater on their homes.
There has been some recovery but there are still vast amounts of un/underemployed. Part time hours that barely get your family through the month, car repairs that throw you in debt, etc. It’s still real hard out there for many of the former middle class. For many, retirement is just a fantasy, far off event that can’t be addressed now.

US conservatism is growing more and more reactionary. And honestly even those conservatives of the French Revolution era weren’t really conservatives. I don’t see Burke as a conservative for his age. He was a supporter of the American revolution and sympathetic to how the Irish were treated. He wasn’t Robespierre of course but I’d say he wasn’t really a conservative by his own time’s standards. The conservatives of those times were the ones championing absolute monarchy “because that’s all we’ve known and it works.”

I agree that Burke was a relatively moderate conservative. He just happened to be the first to explicitly set forth a defense of the way things are/were that is not just mindless traditionalism.

Also agree that absolute monarchy is the platonic ideal of conservatism, even if disguised at times. For example, US conservatives would happily accept absolute rule, as long as it is by plutocrats as opposed to an explicitly hereditary absolute monarchy.

If I recall correctly, Burke supported modest reforms, making him considerably more reasonable than WF Buckley with his “stop history” nonsense.

I’m from north central Ohio and there were/are many Amish and Mennonites in that area. I was on an old race forum back in the late 90s and there was a teacher from out in the Calgary Canada area that taught at a Mennonite school. He told me that there are more Mennonites in Ohio than anywhere else. I told him I was surprised there were Mennonites in Calagary.

Many people think Pennsylvania is the largest home to Amish, but I’ve been told Ohio has more. I don’t know, but I always liked going by some areas of Ohio that still look like the 1800s…like the farms around Shreve.

And just like my mothers side of the family…there are tons of Germans that came to America in the mid-1800s and bought property and set up farms. So, the whole area I grew up in still had many great old world foods traditions and life styles.

I miss the old Catholic Church Festival at my mothers old home and farm area. That was some great food as it was all fresh off the farm, cleaned, prepared and cooked by the local German ladies.

South Central PA, near Gettysburg. Farther west than Lancaster, with a smaller population of Amish. Mennonites are a minority there, but they’ve been there for centuries.

The thing about the Amish is that their population grows, and they have to find someplace to expand. My wife grew up in a farming town out in the toe of New York. Lots of family farms, but like a lot of family farms, the last 50 years have not been kind. The Amish started moving in about 40 years ago, and now are a substantial presence there.
