NBC Was Wrong: Federal Charges Have Not Been “Ruled Out” for Gov. Christie

You may have seen right wing sites trumpeting a report on last night’s NBC Nightly News in which Brian Williams said that federal charges against New Jersey governor Chris Christie in the “Bridgegate” scandal had been ruled out. This report led to an orgy of football-spiking, all over the right wing blogs.

But, uh, Brian Williams was wrong.

NEWARK - NBC says a report by Brian Williams on the network’s Nightly News that federal charges have been ruled out for Gov. Chris Christie in the George Washington Bridge scandal was incorrect.

Federal prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing and haven’t made any announcement on Christie’s status.

“The investigation is continuing,” said Rebekah Carmichael, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman.

NBC outlets had several reports Thursday and Friday citing anonymous sources saying no Christie connection had been uncovered while noting the investigation is continuing. However, Williams on NBC Nightly News Thursday night reported that “federal charges are now ruled out for Chris Christie in the affair that came to be known as Bridgegate.”

NBC spokeswoman Erika Masonhall said that was wrong.

So Lizards who have been paying attention - Christie is no longer one of the favorites for 2016, right?

I think it’s safe to say now that Fox News has done an outstanding job of dragging the rest of the U.S. Media down with them.

Journalism sucks in this country.

Christie is not the base’s favorite, but he certainly is the media’s. It’s why, when the Bridgegate business began putting out a rancid stench, they began seriously entertaining the idea of drafting Jeb Bush.

Joe My God is a really good website for following the Christianists who’ve been losing the battles over gay marriage in the US so now they’re working with countries like Uganda and Russia to export their hate in the form of ‘kill-the-gays’ legislation. They don’t have much on the subject right now (there’s been so much other stuff happening), but it’s a good site for keeping up with Christian haters (by ‘good’, I mean incredibly depressing).

A particularly entertaining nugget from the Wikipedia link is this: “An American version delivered by a congressman in 1968 anachronistically omits the Communists and includes the industrialists, who were not persecuted by the Nazis.”

Unfortunately my Google-fu on a Friday evening is not equal to the task of tracking down this congressman.

Spoke too soon. This version is from page 31636 of Congressional record volume 114 from 1968.

When Hitler attacked the Jews, I was not a Jew, therefore, I was not
concerned. And when Hitler attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic,
and therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the unions
and industrialists, I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned.
Then, Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church—and there was nobody left to be concerned.

The relevant congressman is Henry Reuss (D) and he is quoting remarks by a Mr. Samuels made at a recent rally.

So this is not an early example of a wingnut congressman rewriting history. Instead it is an example of Mr. Samuels knowing his US audience and omitting the inconvenient bit about the Nazis going after Communists or even socialists.

Ebola scares worldwide - will it get worse?

The West ignores the stories of Africans in the middle of the Ebola outbreak

The hysteria is also fueling racism beyond the continent. In Germany, an African woman who recently traveled to Kenya — far from the affected countries — fell ill with a stomach virus at work; the entire building was locked down. In Brussels, an African man had a simple nosebleed at a shopping mall, and the store where it happened was sterilized. In Seoul, a bar put up a sign saying, “We apologize but due to the Ebola Virus we are not accepting Africans at the moment.” Here in the United States, each time I have been to a doctor’s office since the outbreak, I have noticed an anxious look on the faces of the assistants that dissipates only when I say that I haven’t been to my country recently.

162 sagehen  Sep 19, 2014 6:35:47pm

So I’ve started watching some of this season’s new shows (some aired, some that Hulu is putting on preview) — preliminary report:

The Mysteries of Laura — if you like Debra Messing, you’ll like it. If you don’t, you won’t. The writing, supporting characters, case of the week, etc is generic cop show.

The Red Band Society — cuter than the description would seem to indicate (ensemble show set at a nicer-than-most hospital, a group of seriously ill teens bonding as friends). Octavia Spencer is their nurse. Has promise.

A to Z — generic rom-com that wishes it were “How I Met Your Mother”. It might survive if it’s up against weak enough competition, but not going to be a hit.

Selfie — Karen Gillam (as Eliza Dooley), John Cho (as Henry Higenbottom). “My Fair Lady” in a present-day pharmaceutical company (she’s in sales, he’s in marketing). I recommend. Concept, cast, writing, all top notch.

Z Nation — a *very* different take on zombies. DJ Qualls as the military comms guy staying on the job in his protected location, while everything else goes to shit. These zombies move quick, and have enough brain to strategize.

The US record in the cold war was abysmal. The Berlin airlift and Marshall plan were clearly good actions, and the Korean war is also a net credit. But the negatives (e.g., Vietnam, Iran, Chile, Cuba, etc.) were appalling.

Pretty early on, the failure of communism to deliver on its promises was clear to anyone except blinkered zealots. With that background, the ideological victory vs. communism could be won simply by making capitalism work well enough for a large enough fraction of the population.

As we’ve seen since the fall of the USSR, this is apparently too much to ask.

Hey! They served their country by helping Mitt’s campaign. // But yeah sarc aside, that family’s service to their country is very admirable. Plus FDR’s one daughter was a nurse in WWI. I was surprised they didn’t mention it in the series but I had read that FDR wanted to enlist during the Spanish American war but he came down sick.

Wonder what Burns will tackle next. I loved the Civil War, Baseball, Prohibition, and now Roosevelts documentaries. Need to see the one on Jazz, the West, and National Parks. He picks good topics. Like most documentaries, they make you want to learn more about the subject. Definitely plan on tackling a TR bio after this. I read H.W Brands FDR biography and would recommend it.

The authorities might be close to getting the PSP trooper shooting suspect. Two townships in my county are in lockdown (everyone stay inside, lock doors & windows, stay away from windows, etc.) and there are tons of law enforcement swarming that area. Unfortunately, something similar happened last night and no reward. The local news does seem to be conveying a greater sense of urgency so maybe it’ll happen tonight. There’s been a warning scroll on the bottom of the tv for the last two hours.
I really feel for the people over there because their lives have really been disrupted. Last night many were kept out of their homes and were sent to a fire house that had been set up as a shelter. After a week we could really use our lives getting back to normal.

I’m not sure how many “volunteered” for that one.

The 1942 draft called up every able-bodied man 18-34. All of them. The entire student body of the Ivy League. All of major league baseball. Movie stars. Everybody. The only healthy men that age who didn’t end up in uniform on battlefields were the ones with special skills who were just as drafted, but in different capacities.

(there were also plenty of volunteers too young to be drafted, too old to be drafted, women, and the not so able-abled, but I think the Roosevelts were all of age to have been called up)

Here is Cracked’s thoughts.

Two things just happened in that video: One, somebody got a great sound clip for his animated 80s mascot snuff film, and two, that fucking gun just destroyed 50 targets and the entire table they were mounted on. So what was it used for, repelling bear armies? Assassinating continents? Mugging the moon?

Nope: duck hunting.

Well, duck genocide, to be accurate: It’s said that skilled punt gunners could kill more than 50 birds with one shot. Sadly, the practice was outlawed in 1860. That’s right — the Death Star of the hunting world was invented all the way back in the 19th century. They’re too big to hold, unless you’re a skinny androgynous Japanese RPG character, so they had to be mounted on little boats called “punts” — hence the name. Here’s a video of what punt gun hunting looked like:

If you told somebody you were “going duck hunting” back in the early 1800s, you would follow that statement by strolling out to the dock, lying down on a scale replica of a battleship and waging naval warfare on flocks of unsuspecting waterfowl. Think that’s an unfair analogy? Consider this: For greater efficiency, hunters would often work in fleets of 10 punts or more.

I saw one of those once when I was a teenager. My dad took me to one of his patients (a gunsmith) to put a new barrel on my 1943 Springfield .30-06. Yeah, that was my deer rifle growing up. Anyhoo, the guy lived in this little shack of a house with floor to ceiling guns all around…one was a punt gun he’d made when he was young. He also had a 4 barrel .16 guage he said he used for poaching ducks when he was young. We went out to his barn where he had two lathes and drills for boring barrels, and behind it I picked out my “new” barrel - the old axel off of a Model T Ford. ( he had about seven of them )

My dad was born in 1928, so too young for the draft. He volunteered anyway, a malnourished kid with glasses, allergies and a bad knee (they weren’t fussy). He ended up stationed at a base on the west coast where trainloads of soldiers would pass through on their way to board a ship. They had to eat first, and dad was dishing out the meal. At demob, it became a place where shiploads of soldiers passed through on their way to board a train, and dad was still dishing out the meals.

He spent most of the war peeling potatoes and cleaning the grease trap.

I don’t defend the Ugandan government’s anti-gay policies, but they have put great efforts into opposing al Shattab in Somalia, and their troops are some of the few forces in the Central African Republic that have been able to really work to create local stability. To abandon forces that do such good and important work strikes me as madness. It would be condemning thousands to death in order to show sympathy.

The Ugandan anti-gay law was a monstrosity, and efforts to pass it back into law should be opposed. But opposed in the right way, quietly, not with loud protests and threats of aid cuts that simply make Ugandans feel they’re being bullied.

There are routinely two teams of four (each of two snipers & two spotters) on the roof according to “unverifiable sources” since the Secret Service never comments on protective measures.

In routine operation they try to stay out of the public eye, which means that they are not always deployed “at the ready.” It is a trade off between making the white house look like a citadel in the midst of a siege and a public space.

You would have to employ at least four times that many snipers and rotate them in 2 hour or less shifts to maintain alertness in order to make sure that someone like Omar J. Gonzalez was dead before reaching the doors.

There you go with your facts! I’m just surprised South Carolina isn’t in that bottom 10 group. Maybe the Bob Jones University grads pushed the number up.

280 Eclectic Cyborg  Sep 19, 2014 11:18:34pm

So I had an interesting experience at work tonight. My boss sent out some reports that showed my numbers in a certain area were a little bit short of goal. Not terribly short mind you, but definitely an “improvement needed” situation.

I started to get a little worried as I am wont to do when these kinds of things happen.

At first I chalked it up to my noted habit of worrying about things too darned much (which I swear is genetic because my mom and grandmother do it too).

A coworker pointed out to me that there really was no reason to be concerned: The company can’t just fire us for random things because we are unionized.

That led me to an important revelation: I realized that part of the worry I was feeling was the natural side effect of working without a union in an “at will” state.

For the past ten years I have worked for a number of major corporations, all in non union positions and all in “at will” states. I’ve seen so much shit go down. People fired for the stupidest, pettiest most ridiculous reasons you can think of.

I’m serious. At a previous job a guy was fired for, get this: using the wrong door to enter the building. We had a designated employee entrance and he didn’t use it. Now I understand getting involved and saying: “Don’t do that again” but outright firing him for it?

Of course in an “at-will” state a boss can fire you for looking at them the wrong way or they can fire you if they are in a bad mood and looking for someone to take it out on or they can fire you for absolutely no reason whatsoever. There are of course labor laws, but good luck getting a wrongful termination suit to fly in an “at will” state.

So after a decade of watching over my shoulder, it’s nice to have union protection. I know Unions aren’t without their issues but it’s comforting to know that I can’t just be canned on a whim with zero recourse.

The funny thing is I wish Unions weren’t necessary. I wish businesses actually treated their employees like human beings with dignity and respect and paid them reasonably.

Since that is obviously never going to happen, I understand the need for a union.

No True Scotsman
This error is a kind of ad hoc rescue of one’s generalization in which the reasoner re-characterizes the situation solely in order to escape refutation of the generalization.

Example:

Smith: All Scotsmen are loyal and brave.
Jones: But McDougal over there is a Scotsman, and he was arrested by his commanding officer for running from the enemy.
Smith: Well, if that’s right, it just shows that McDougal wasn’t a TRUE Scotsman.

Basic question ought to be do they represent mainstream accepted Christianity/Islam, but that in itself can still be very subjective in nature.

In the meantime I will keep arguing with the idiots on the most simplistic level I can since anything more complex would only further confuse them. :(

293 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator  Sep 20, 2014 12:38:46am

re: #292 ausador

Indeed, I don’t like the term “mainstream accepted”. What is the mainstream accepted Christianity? That depends entirely on the geographic region you’re in. It’s one thing in Russia, another in Utah. The Saudi Wahhabism is hardly acceptable in the Western world, yet it would be absurd to claim on this flimsy basis that it’s not a legitimate form of Islam. And so on.

re: #291 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

Used the counter argument three times today myself, re. “no true Scotsman Christian.”

I just find it extremely hypocritical for them to say that large groups from Christian countries who committed violent atrocities in the past “weren’t true Christians.” Yet they turn around and claim that ISIS and/or Al Qaeda represents the only “true” nature of Islam.

325 lawhawk  Sep 20, 2014 6:05:16am

The firm that filed the suit has withdrawn, claiming that it was suffering a backlash for filing the suit. Another firm has taken its place.

The lawyer, David B. Rivkin Jr., had taken the case on behalf of House Republicans in August, right after they voted to sue the president, accusing him of overstepping the powers of the presidency. Two people with knowledge of the situation said Mr. Rivkin withdrew from the case under pressure after facing criticism that he had taken on an overly partisan lawsuit. Some members of the firm feared the case against Mr. Obama could drive off potential clients and hurt Baker Hostetler’s credibility, according to one of the people with knowledge of the case. Both people said they were prohibited from publicly discussing such a delicate case.

With Mr. Rivkin’s withdrawal, the House Administration Committee signed a new contract on Friday with William A. Burck, co-head of the Washington office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan. Mr. Burck had served as outside counsel for the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform when House Republicans sued Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to produce documents related to the botched gunrunning investigation known as Operation Fast and Furious.

He also represented Maureen McDonnell, the wife of former Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia, in the corruption trial that ended this month with her conviction on nine counts.

So, Rivkin withdrew because of the backlash he was getting and the potential loss of business to the firm for pushing such a partisan suit (and one that I find without merit). So who does the House GOP go and get to replace him?

The lawyer who represented Maureen McDonnell who was found guilty of corruption on 9 counts in federal court. That’s a great record. This suit is looking better all the time - for the Obama Administration given the clown show that the GOP is putting together.

It is far more likely the “Wisconsin Poll Watcher Militia” is ultimately just a excuse for a small group of gun fuckers to do a circle jerk today, and then beat off next month to fantasies of how they are going to smack down the [plural n-word].

That said, they could disrupt polls in poor black areas if they tried to stop people from voting, or rather the armed residents of that area would stop the voting after they blew said ‘militiamen’ away. But the real reason for saying the Westboro Baptist Church is not Christian is the same reason as saying the ‘Islamic State’ is not Islamic: The speaker or writer is trying to say that he is not bigoted in general against the religion the fanatics claim to be a part of. The reasons differ. Obama said that probably because it’s what the Muslim allies must hear. In his place I would probably say the same. Others say that because they don’t want to be associated with fanatics (whether Christians or Muslims). Still others try to defend the whole groups from such associations. The latter two reasons may be admirable, but they’re nevertheless wrong, since they’re a form of the No True Scotsman fallacy. Good morning, Lizards!

Earlier this week, I signed on for a few dates with a contemporary country band, the first show scheduled for this Friday. They sent me their song list, and at that point I realized that I had a week to learn a full night’s music - outside of a Buck Owens tune, a Dwight Yoakam tune and a couple of others that I know, I’m looking at learning about 3 dozen songs inside of a week, and I’m about halfway through the list so far.

The songs aren’t difficult to learn, but there is the danger of having so many new tunes to play that my mind will get crossed up on which song is which. So this afternoon will see some heavy woodshedding.

And as for the material - boy, has country music changed. Still much the same lyrical content-wise (beer, trucks, Friday, women), but I’m astounded at how many of the elements of hip hop and modern R&B have been absorbed by modern country.

Okay, then. Learn that poem…learn that poem…

re: #346 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

That’s what the terms “radical”, “fundamentalist”, “extremist” are for. They’re subjective, but correct for a given socium.

You know how people are: They sometimes are too easily offended or they worry too much about giving offense. So I think the best way to deal with this particular logical fallacy is to call it out if its not needed* but at the same time to be understanding about why it was said and help the speaker find a better way of saying what (s)he needs to say.

*: In a few cases logic has to get tossed out due to others’ paranoia, or due to hostile propaganda. So there are some rare times when a logical fallacy simply has be allowed because the confusion and inaccuracy it causes are preferable to an even worse outcome which would otherwise be likely.

But the real reason for saying the Westboro Baptist Church is not Christian is the same reason as saying the ‘Islamic State’ is not Islamic: The speaker or writer is trying to say that he is not bigoted in general against the religion the fanatics claim to be a part of. It’s a way to say to non-fanatical Christians and/or Muslims that they are not the ones targeted by the speaker.

As Sergey pointed out, the reasons for saying it differ according to the speaker. Have you looked at the timeline of the woman ausador was responding to? I think not, because if you had you’d know that she was clearly asserting is that what Muslim fanatics do is acceptable standard practice in Islam, whereas bad/violent behavior by Christians isn’t acceptable standard practice in Christianity.

IOW, it’s okay to paint Muslims with the same ugly brush, but not Christians because Christianity is morally/ethically superior. Naturally, she’s cherry-picking verses and totally talking out of her ass, making her utter ignorance of what is or isn’t acceptable standard Islamic practice WRT jihad (or anything else for that matter) obvious.

‘Wisconsin Poll Watcher Militia’ plans to confront Scott Walker recall petition signers at polls

A self-described militia group claims to be checking names on the 2012 Scott Walker recall petition and plans to confront those found to have outstanding warrants or tax defaults at the polls on Nov. 4.

“We prefer our people be armed,” reads a Facebook post by Wisconsin Poll Watcher Militia, screen captured on a blog at politicususa.com. “Some will be heading to some of Milwaukee, Racine, and Beloit’s worst areas. We will be armed with a list of people to look for at each location.”

The exchange posted on Politicususa continues:

Patrick Murray: “Just so you are aware, I will not report Republicans. Only Democrats.”

Wisconsin Poll Watcher Militia: “We will be targeting heavy democrat districts, so it is doubtful this will even be an issue.”

JoeMyGod is great, I also like Box Turtle Bulletin for keeping up with the homophobic legislation.

They were tracking Uganda and American evangelic influence there long before anyone else was:
Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Thanks. The funny/sad part is that it apparently never occurred to @burkepeaches to take 5 minutes to ponder this:

Iraq has been a Muslim majority country since the early days of Islam. Various forms of Yazdânism predate Islam in Iraq, Iran, and Turkey and are related to Zoroastrian theology. How is it possible that they survived under Muslim rule all these centuries if “killing yazidis is part of Islam?” Why did Muslims allow them to live among them for 1000+ years? Basic critical thinking skills seem to be in short supply with too many people.

‘Wisconsin Poll Watcher Militia’ plans to confront Scott Walker recall petition signers at polls

To repeat what I said earlier on this topic:

re: #337 Dark_Falcon

It is far more likely the “Wisconsin Poll Watcher Militia” is ultimately just a excuse for a small group of gun fuckers to do a circle jerk today, and then beat off next month to fantasies of how they are going to smack down the [plural n-word].

That said, they could disrupt polls in poor black areas if they tried to stop people from voting, or rather the armed residents of that area would stop the voting after they blew said ‘militiamen’ away. That’s the biggest reason I think that group is baloney: If they ever do what they are threatening to do, they will be very sorry.

re: #353 CuriousLurker

In the US, Santa Claus (AKA “St. Nicholas”), assisted by elves and driven by flying reindeer, comes down the chimney every December 25 to deliver gifts to good little girls and boys, while optionally imbibing milk and cookies.

In Holland, he travels by boat to the shore where he transfers to horseback and is assisted by six to eight black men.

The words “silly” and “unrealistic” were redefined when I learned that Saint Nicholas travels with what was consistently described as “six to eight black men.” I asked several Dutch people to narrow it down, but none of them could give me an exact number. It was always “six to eight,” which seems strange, seeing as they’ve had hundreds of years to get a decent count.

The six to eight black men were characterized as personal slaves until the mid-fifties, when the political climate changed and it was decided that instead of being slaves they were just good friends. I think history has proven that something usually comes between slavery and friendship, a period of time marked not by cookies and quiet times beside the fire but by bloodshed and mutual hostility. They have such violence in Holland, but rather than duking it out among themselves, Santa and his former slaves decided to take it out on the public. In the early years, if a child was naughty, Saint Nicholas and the six to eight black men would beat him with what Oscar described as “the small branch of a tree.”

“A switch?”

“Yes,” he said. “That’s it. They’d kick him and beat him with a switch. Then, if the youngster was really bad, they’d put him in a sack and take him back to Spain.”

“Saint Nicholas would kick you?”

“Well, not anymore,” Oscar said. “Now he just pretends to kick you.”

“And the six to eight black men?”

“Them, too.”

He considered this to be progressive, but in a way I think it’s almost more perverse than the original punishment. “I’m going to hurt you, but not really.” How many times have we fallen for that line? The fake slap invariably makes contact, adding the elements of shock and betrayal to what had previously been plain, old- fashioned fear. What kind of Santa spends his time pretending to kick people before stuffing them into a canvas sack? Then, of course, you’ve got the six to eight former slaves who could potentially go off at any moment. This, I think, is the greatest difference between us and the Dutch. While a certain segment of our population might be perfectly happy with the arrangement, if you told the average white American that six to eight nameless black men would be sneaking into his house in the middle of the night, he would barricade the doors and arm himself with whatever he could get his hands on.

We use our solar panels as backup to the main grid, but have been using solar exclusively to operate our well pump and, in winter, the pumphouse lighting and heat tape. Here is teaparty conservative and vile scumbag Scott Walker in his own words:

Murphy: Right, right. We’ll back you any way we can. But what we were thinking about the crowd was, uh, was planting some troublemakers.

Walker: You know, well, the only problem with that — because we thought about that. The problem with — my only gut reaction to that would be, right now the lawmakers I’ve talked to have just completely had it with them. The public is not really fond of this. The teacher’s union did some polling and focus groups I think and found out that the public turned on them the minute they closed school down on them for a couple of days. The guys we’ve got left are largely from out of state and I keep dismissing it in all my press comments, saying ehh, they’re mostly from out of state. My only fear would be if there’s a ruckus caused is that would scare the public into thinking maybe the governor has to settle to avoid all these problems. You know, whereas I’ve said, hey, we can handle this, people can protest, this is Madison, you know, full of the ’60s liberals. Let ‘em protest. It’s not going to affect us. And as long as we go back to our homes and the majority of people are telling us we’re doing the right thing, let ‘em protest all they want. So that’s my gut reaction. I think it’s actually good if they’re constant, they’re noisy, but they’re quiet, nothing happens. Sooner or later the media stops finding them interesting.

So yeah, there’s that.

Really, much as we would love being 100% independent from the grid, that’s not financially realistic for now. But we decided to not just throw up our hands in defeat. Having a solar-wind backup for essential electrically-powered things is very do-able and is much easier (and quieter and more convenient) than the stinky gas-powered generator we relied upon in the past (although, that is still there for backup use if needed, as well.)
The commercial mains go down often enough here in the backwoods, it just made sense to have a variety of backup systems.

That reminds me a little bit of the Persian New Year in which Amu Noruz (“Uncle” Norooz, usually depicted as an older man, the same way we depict the outgoing year) is accompanied by the playful if somewhat comical Haji Firuz:

Hāji Piruz or Hajji Firuz, popularly (Persian: حاجی پیروز ‎) in the language of literature and satire Haji or Hajji also (Persian: هاجى ‎ a satire maker) is the traditional herald of Nowruz, the Persian New Year. He oversees celebrations for the new year perhaps as a remnant of the ancient Zoroastrian fire-keeper. His face is covered in soot and he is clad in bright red clothes and a felt hat. While ushering in Nowruz, Hajji Firuz plays a tambourine and sings “Hāji Firuz-e, sal-i-ye ruz-e” (It is Hāji Firuz time, It happens one day in a year). People of all ages gather around him and his troupe of musicians and listen to them play the drum, saz or kamancheh, and dance through the streets with tambourines and trumpets spreading good cheer and the news of the coming New Year.

en.wikipedia.org

Haji Firuz isn’t in any way seen as a threat—in fact he’s quite well loved by Iranians. Here’s a pop music depiction that’s been popular around Nowruz time for the past several years:

Unverified:

If true, at first I thought, ‘this could motivate the Turks’. Then I thought, ‘they don’t really care for the PKK either.’ But if it DID happen in Turkey, that could still be a motivator.

Two recent news articles from the area:

Turkey denies paying ransom in deal that freed 49 Islamic State hostages

[…]

MIT officials in Ankara said the hostages had been held in the vicinity of Mosul since they were seized and that their location was switched seven times, Hurriyet said. MIT said it had had at least five opportunities to free them, but military clashes prevented it.

It was the Islamic State that brought the hostages to the border town of Tal Abyad, and released them, according to this account. They boarded buses with curtains drawn across the windows and crossed to Akcakale on the Turkish side. They were then driven to Sanliurfa, about 30 miles away.

Turkey closed the Tal Abyad-Akcakale crossing earlier this year after the Islamic State captured the Syrian side.

Turkey opens border to 45,000 Kurds fleeing Isis in Syria

Tens of thousands of Syrian Kurds have fled across the border into Turkey in the last 24 hours to escape Islamic State (Isis) fighters, the Turkish government has said.

The country opened eight crossing points along a 20-mile (32km) stretch from Akcakale to Mursitpinar, allowing about 45,000 Kurds to escape from the Islamist extremists, the deputy prime minister, Numan Kurtulmus, said on Saturday.

The exodus began as Isis fighters seized control of 60 Kurdish villages near the border in a two-day campaign as they approach the town of Kobane, also known as Ain al-Arab.

Heh, I’d be a lot more inclined to take a person’s comments seriously if they at least had a good grasp of their mother tongue’s vocabulary. If it was just one word and only happened once I’d be willing to chalk it up to a typo or even a smartphone or tablet’s autocomplete “feature”, but she used two words incorrectly more than once.

If someone doesn’t have a good command of their own native language, then I automatically assume their ignorance also extends into other areas and increases exponentially when they begin discussing subjects that are even less familiar to them.

A great majority of self described conservatives would support the groups actions. Walker himself has used signing the recall as a political weapon.

re: #384 Dark_Falcon

I disagree, intensely.

BBL

You may disagree, but it happened:

petitions to recall Gov. Scott Walker are being targeted by an anonymous group. The group, fronted for by Citizens for Responsible Government, a conservative Milwaukee organization, filed freedom of information requests and obtained the names, job titles, and salaries of every teacher in Janesville, then produced a flier…At the bottom of the flier is a “Parents’ Rights Protection Form” urging parents to send it to Superintendent Karen Schulte and request that “my child be assigned to a classroom taught by a non-radical teacher during the 2012-2013 school year.” […]

and

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, an aide of the governor called Joshua Inglett, a University of Wisconsin-Platteville rising junior, to tell him he was not getting the position after it came to light the student signed a petition to force Walker’s 2012 recall election…The conservative blog rightwisconsin.com claims the fact that Inglett signed the petition led to the nomination withdrawal.

There is a difference between faulting someone for saying you shouldn’t be holding your current job and going to a polling place armed and trying to determine if black people coming in to vote have any trouble with the law you can use to keep them from voting.

The first is indeed retaliation, but in my understanding is legal. The second is a blatant attempt at voter intimidation. The intent of the “Wisconsin Poll Watcher Militia” can be summed up in this 1924 election refrain from Chicago:

“Who’ll carry the 41st and 42nd Wards? O’Banion, in his pistol pockets!”

For all I know, the group could be the troublemakers Scott Walker considered unleashing on kindergarten teachers because conservatives certainly would like to bash liberals/teachers/blacks/etc. Look at any and all comments to any article at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, or come up here to any south side bar in Milwaukee, don’t take much effort to get to the conservative goals and thoughts.

So, post-vote intimidation/retaliation is okay, but pre-vote intimidation/retaliation is not. Got it.

The discussion was about whether conservatives would support their actions, not whether they were legal or not.

I’m not sure it makes you any safer in the moment, beyond what a flashing light will do, but there may be two closely related benefits - first, if you are hit, you’ll be able to go after the driver and prove he was at fault. Second, if drivers know they’re being recorded, they may give cyclists a wider berth.

Actually, O’Banion was supporting the Republicans in 1924 (this was back when Chicago had a functioning GOP) I deliberately chose a example of such intimidation that favored Republicans to prevent the accusation that I was committing the logical fallacy of tu quoque.

Flashing front and rear lights have been a common accessory for bicyclists in Mpls/St. Paul for a long time, and it’s very helpful. I was using them when they first came out in the 80’s. I don’t know how many bikers are using cameras here, but It would be great for documenting how often they blow through stop signs and stop lights.

In MN, cyclists are given full rights that motor vehicles have. They are allowed to use a full vehicle lane if the shoulder is too narrow, although I’ve gotten held up behind a bike using the full lane when there is no one parked anywhere on the street and they should have (by law) moved over into that lane.

I live only three miles from work, but there are over 20 stoplights on that route. Bicyclists like to brag that they can bike to work faster than I can drive the route, but if I could cut between all the cars in front of me and then run every stoplight, I could make it to work a lot faster too. I’d love to see the video of those cyclists doing the same route that I take.

…and keep your damned fixie off my lawn!!

The woman they interviewed kept emphasizing that it would make cyclists FEEL safer. I’m not a big fan of that as a reason to do things. That’s the same reason they give for making bike lanes, it will make cyclists FEEL safer. Meanwhile in the case of bike lanes, it is actually making them LESS safe. In the video, it showed a guy riding in a DZBL, a door zone bike lane. If somebody opened their door while parked there, that would take out a cyclist.

Having a record of the license of a vehicle that hit you would be invaluable, and worth running the camera, even though being hit from behind is about the most rare kind of bicycle wreck. A 360 degree camera set up would be better. It’s more likely a car will pull out or turn in front of you. (That’s only accounting for wrecks that are the fault of the driver. Cyclist-caused wrecks are at least 50% of wrecks.)

The only thing that makes cyclists ACTUALLY safer is education, mainly
for the cyclist, but also for auto drivers.

And as stpaulbear said, the blinky lights are good. It would also be good if drivers could tell they were being recorded, but it’s not clear to me that they would, even if they saw the Fly6 installed.

My only bike accident with a car was when someone who’d been sitting in their car threw the door open just as I was riding past. I got shish-kabobbed on the upper corner of the door, flew straight up in the air and landed flat on my back in the street. I lucked out in that I wasn’t injured severely although it took over 30 stitches to close the wound.

I ran into the woman the next day while I was back at the site looking for my keys and she was pissed that I’d given an incorrect description of her car and that I’d thrown her car door out of alignment. When the accident happened, she kept trying to say she was too busy to give info, but a total stranger had stopped to gather info and he also drove me to the hospital. I wish I would have given the woman a big hug and told her it was OK, mostly because I would have gotten blood all over her clothing and it would have been such sweet revenge.
