NBC Was Wrong: Federal Charges Have Not Been “Ruled Out” for Gov. Christie

You may have seen right wing sites trumpeting a report on last night’s NBC Nightly News in which Brian Williams said that federal charges against New Jersey governor Chris Christie in the “Bridgegate” scandal had been ruled out. This report led to an orgy of football-spiking, all over the right wing blogs.

But, uh, Brian Williams was wrong.

NEWARK - NBC says a report by Brian Williams on the network’s Nightly News that federal charges have been ruled out for Gov. Chris Christie in the George Washington Bridge scandal was incorrect.

Federal prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing and haven’t made any announcement on Christie’s status.

“The investigation is continuing,” said Rebekah Carmichael, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman.

NBC outlets had several reports Thursday and Friday citing anonymous sources saying no Christie connection had been uncovered while noting the investigation is continuing. However, Williams on NBC Nightly News Thursday night reported that “federal charges are now ruled out for Chris Christie in the affair that came to be known as Bridgegate.”

NBC spokeswoman Erika Masonhall said that was wrong.

Joe My God is a really good website for following the Christianists who’ve been losing the battles over gay marriage in the US so now they’re working with countries like Uganda and Russia to export their hate in the form of ‘kill-the-gays’ legislation. They don’t have much on the subject right now (there’s been so much other stuff happening), but it’s a good site for keeping up with Christian haters (by ‘good’, I mean incredibly depressing).

I am a FDR fan mostly but like Eleanor disappointed that he did not act forcefully on lynching and I think the court packing scheme was wrong. Minor props to George Will for admitting that the Southern Democrats were conservatives though.

So I’ve started watching some of this season’s new shows (some aired, some that Hulu is putting on preview) — preliminary report:

The Mysteries of Laura — if you like Debra Messing, you’ll like it. If you don’t, you won’t. The writing, supporting characters, case of the week, etc is generic cop show.

The Red Band Society — cuter than the description would seem to indicate (ensemble show set at a nicer-than-most hospital, a group of seriously ill teens bonding as friends). Octavia Spencer is their nurse. Has promise.

A to Z — generic rom-com that wishes it were “How I Met Your Mother”. It might survive if it’s up against weak enough competition, but not going to be a hit.

Selfie — Karen Gillam (as Eliza Dooley), John Cho (as Henry Higenbottom). “My Fair Lady” in a present-day pharmaceutical company (she’s in sales, he’s in marketing). I recommend. Concept, cast, writing, all top notch.

Z Nation — a *very* different take on zombies. DJ Qualls as the military comms guy staying on the job in his protected location, while everything else goes to shit. These zombies move quick, and have enough brain to strategize.

I was surprised they didn’t mention it in the series but I had read that FDR wanted to enlist during the Spanish American war but he came down sick.

Wonder what Burns will tackle next. I loved the Civil War, Baseball, Prohibition, and now Roosevelts documentaries. Need to see the one on Jazz, the West, and National Parks. He picks good topics. Like most documentaries, they make you want to learn more about the subject. Definitely plan on tackling a TR bio after this. I read H.W Brands FDR biography and would recommend it.

The authorities might be close to getting the PSP trooper shooting suspect. Two townships in my county are in lockdown (everyone stay inside, lock doors & windows, stay away from windows, etc.) and there are tons of law enforcement swarming that area. Unfortunately, something similar happened last night and no reward. The local news does seem to be conveying a greater sense of urgency so maybe it’ll happen tonight. There’s been a warning scroll on the bottom of the tv for the last two hours.
I really feel for the people over there because their lives have really been disrupted. Last night many were kept out of their homes and were sent to a fire house that had been set up as a shelter. After a week we could really use our lives getting back to normal.

I’m not sure how many “volunteered” for that one.

The 1942 draft called up every able-bodied man 18-34. All of them. The entire student body of the Ivy League. All of major league baseball. Movie stars. Everybody. The only healthy men that age who didn’t end up in uniform on battlefields were the ones with special skills who were just as drafted, but in different capacities.

(there were also plenty of volunteers too young to be drafted, too old to be drafted, women, and the not so able-abled, but I think the Roosevelts were all of age to have been called up)

His older brothers were in WWII though as was his brother in law, my great uncle.

My Grandfather was an illegal immigrant from Spain via Cuba who was running a Spanish restaurant in Beckley West Virginia. The only way the war affected him was the registration act. He had to close shop and take the entire family to New York city for almost a month in 1942 in order to get their “papers” in order. I have pictures from the trip…

He ended up serving in the merchant marine.

Oh, and my mom worked in a factory that made aircraft parts. I’ve forgotten the name.

I saw one of those once when I was a teenager. My dad took me to one of his patients (a gunsmith) to put a new barrel on my 1943 Springfield .30-06. Yeah, that was my deer rifle growing up. Anyhoo, the guy lived in this little shack of a house with floor to ceiling guns all around…one was a punt gun he’d made when he was young. He also had a 4 barrel .16 guage he said he used for poaching ducks when he was young. We went out to his barn where he had two lathes and drills for boring barrels, and behind it I picked out my “new” barrel - the old axel off of a Model T Ford. ( he had about seven of them )

My dad was born in 1928, so too young for the draft. He volunteered anyway, a malnourished kid with glasses, allergies and a bad knee (they weren’t fussy). He ended up stationed at a base on the west coast where trainloads of soldiers would pass through on their way to board a ship. They had to eat first, and dad was dishing out the meal. At demob, it became a place where shiploads of soldiers passed through on their way to board a train, and dad was still dishing out the meals.

He spent most of the war peeling potatoes and cleaning the grease trap.

Local news says there have been reports of shots fired but they haven’t been able to confirm. Area has been flooded with local, state, and federal law enforcement.
The area currently being searched is quite remote and heavily wooded. Most people would consider where I live as remote but it’s nothing compared to this place. Cell service is very sporadic, no street lights, homes far apart. Pretty tough area to search.

To abandon forces that do such good and important work strikes me as madness. It would be condemning thousands to death in order to show sympathy.

The Ugandan anti-gay law was a monstrosity, and efforts to pass it back into law should be opposed. But opposed in the right way, quietly, not with loud protests and threats of aid cuts that simply make Ugandans feel they’re being bullied.

There are routinely two teams of four (each of two snipers & two spotters) on the roof according to “unverifiable sources” since the Secret Service never comments on protective measures.

In routine operation they try to stay out of the public eye, which means that they are not always deployed “at the ready.” It is a trade off between making the white house look like a citadel in the midst of a siege and a public space.

You would have to employ at least four times that many snipers and rotate them in 2 hour or less shifts to maintain alertness in order to make sure that someone like Omar J. Gonzalez was dead before reaching the doors.

Well its off to bed for me. No word of the suspect’s capture but the latest is that he might be holed up in a vacant house. Plenty of vacation homes in the area so there are lots of empty houses this time of year. If anyone is interested in just how remote the area is, look up Canadensis, PA on Google Earth and you’ll see.
With any luck I’ll wake up to the news that he was captured overnight and life will return to normal.

So I had an interesting experience at work tonight. My boss sent out some reports that showed my numbers in a certain area were a little bit short of goal. Not terribly short mind you, but definitely an “improvement needed” situation.

I started to get a little worried as I am wont to do when these kinds of things happen.

At first I chalked it up to my noted habit of worrying about things too darned much (which I swear is genetic because my mom and grandmother do it too).

A coworker pointed out to me that there really was no reason to be concerned: The company can’t just fire us for random things because we are unionized.

That led me to an important revelation: I realized that part of the worry I was feeling was the natural side effect of working without a union in an “at will” state.

For the past ten years I have worked for a number of major corporations, all in non union positions and all in “at will” states. I’ve seen so much shit go down. People fired for the stupidest, pettiest most ridiculous reasons you can think of.

I’m serious. At a previous job a guy was fired for, get this: using the wrong door to enter the building. We had a designated employee entrance and he didn’t use it. Now I understand getting involved and saying: “Don’t do that again” but outright firing him for it?

Of course in an “at-will” state a boss can fire you for looking at them the wrong way or they can fire you if they are in a bad mood and looking for someone to take it out on or they can fire you for absolutely no reason whatsoever. There are of course labor laws, but good luck getting a wrongful termination suit to fly in an “at will” state.

So after a decade of watching over my shoulder, it’s nice to have union protection. I know Unions aren’t without their issues but it’s comforting to know that I can’t just be canned on a whim with zero recourse.

The funny thing is I wish Unions weren’t necessary. I wish businesses actually treated their employees like human beings with dignity and respect and paid them reasonably.

Since that is obviously never going to happen, I understand the need for a union.

The lawyer, David B. Rivkin Jr., had taken the case on behalf of House Republicans in August, right after they voted to sue the president, accusing him of overstepping the powers of the presidency. Two people with knowledge of the situation said Mr. Rivkin withdrew from the case under pressure after facing criticism that he had taken on an overly partisan lawsuit. Some members of the firm feared the case against Mr. Obama could drive off potential clients and hurt Baker Hostetler’s credibility, according to one of the people with knowledge of the case. Both people said they were prohibited from publicly discussing such a delicate case.

With Mr. Rivkin’s withdrawal, the House Administration Committee signed a new contract on Friday with William A. Burck, co-head of the Washington office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan. Mr. Burck had served as outside counsel for the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform when House Republicans sued Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to produce documents related to the botched gunrunning investigation known as Operation Fast and Furious.

It is far more likely the “Wisconsin Poll Watcher Militia” is ultimately just a excuse for a small group of gun fuckers to do a circle jerk today, and then beat off next month to fantasies of how they are going to smack down the [plural n-word].

That said, they could disrupt polls in poor black areas if they tried to stop people from voting, or rather the armed residents of that area would stop the voting after they blew said ‘militiamen’ away. That’s the biggest reason I think that group is baloney: If they ever do what they are threatening to do, they will be very sorry.

So, I went to a Czech Star Trek fan club meeting today - I was invited by a co-worker - and to my total and absolute lack of surprise, there not much different than their American counterparts.

Mercifully, there was no cosplay. Apparently, that comes later.

We saw Prelude To Axanar, a fanfilm, and I will say for a fanfilm, it’s quite good. It’s even got a few big names in it, such as Richard Hatch and Tony Todd and others.

But the real reason for saying the Westboro Baptist Church is not Christian is the same reason as saying the ‘Islamic State’ is not Islamic: The speaker or writer is trying to say that he is not bigoted in general against the religion the fanatics claim to be a part of. It’s a way to say to non-fanatical Christians and/or Muslims that they are not the ones targeted by the speaker.

When I went to a ST Convention in Montreal, I was sorely disappointed by the lack of costumes. I mean, really, if you’re going to a convention like this, buck up and dress up! Had I not been visiting, and had no way to create some kind of awesome costume, I’d have done it.

So, I went to a Czech Star Trek fan club meeting today - I was invited by a co-worker - and to my total and absolute lack of surprise, there not much different than their American counterparts.

Mercifully, there was no cosplay. Apparently, that comes later.

We saw Prelude To Axanar, a fanfilm, and I will say for a fanfilm, it’s quite good. It’s even got a few big names in it, such as Richard Hatch and Tony Todd and others.

Star Trek has not yet penetrated the Bamboo Curtain, so there are no trekkers/trekkies in great numbers in China. Cosplay, on the other hand, is a growing hobby among the under-30 crowd — mostly anime characters.

Good morning, Lizards!

Earlier this week, I signed on for a few dates with a contemporary country band, the first show scheduled for this Friday. They sent me their song list, and at that point I realized that I had a week to learn a full night’s music - outside of a Buck Owens tune, a Dwight Yoakam tune and a couple of others that I know, I’m looking at learning about 3 dozen songs inside of a week, and I’m about halfway through the list so far.

The songs aren’t difficult to learn, but there is the danger of having so many new tunes to play that my mind will get crossed up on which song is which. So this afternoon will see some heavy woodshedding.

And as for the material - boy, has country music changed. Still much the same lyrical content-wise (beer, trucks, Friday, women), but I’m astounded at how many of the elements of hip hop and modern R&B have been absorbed by modern country.

Okay, then. Learn that poem…learn that poem…

That’s what the terms “radical”, “fundamentalist”, “extremist” are for. They’re subjective, but correct for a given socium.

You know how people are: They sometimes are too easily offended or they worry too much about giving offense. So I think the best way to deal with this particular logical fallacy is to call it out if its not needed* but at the same time to be understanding about why it was said and help the speaker find a better way of saying what (s)he needs to say.

*: In a few cases logic has to get tossed out due to others’ paranoia, or due to hostile propaganda. So there are some rare times when a logical fallacy simply has be allowed because the confusion and inaccuracy it causes are preferable to an even worse outcome which would otherwise be likely.

Iraq has been a Muslim majority country since the early days of Islam. Various forms of Yazdânism predate Islam in Iraq, Iran, and Turkey and are related to Zoroastrian theology. The words “silly” and “unrealistic” were redefined when I learned that Saint Nicholas travels with what was consistently described as “six to eight black men.” I asked several Dutch people to narrow it down, but none of them could give me an exact number. It was always “six to eight,” which seems strange, seeing as they’ve had hundreds of years to get a decent count.

The six to eight black men were characterized as personal slaves until the mid-fifties, when the political climate changed and it was decided that instead of being slaves they were just good friends. I think history has proven that something usually comes between slavery and friendship, a period of time marked not by cookies and quiet times beside the fire but by bloodshed and mutual hostility. They have such violence in Holland, but rather than duking it out among themselves, Santa and his former slaves decided to take it out on the public. In the early years, if a child was naughty, Saint Nicholas and the six to eight black men would beat him with what Oscar described as “the small branch of a tree.”

“A switch?”

“Yes,” he said. “That’s it. They’d kick him and beat him with a switch. Then, if the youngster was really bad, they’d put him in a sack and take him back to Spain.”

We use our solar panels as backup to the main grid, but have been using solar exclusively to operate our well pump and, in winter, the pumphouse lighting and heat tape. There are also electrical outlets in the power/battery room where I can charge phones, laptops, plug in the coffeemaker and portable convection cooktop, etc., during an emergency. The windmill will be tied in soon.

We like to think so, :D!
Really, much as we would love being 100% independent from the grid, that’s not financially realistic for now. But we decided to not just throw up our hands in defeat. Having a solar-wind backup for essential electrically-powered things is very do-able and is much easier (and quieter and more convenient) than the stinky gas-powered generator we relied upon in the past (although, that is still there for backup use if needed, as well.)
The commercial mains go down often enough here in the backwoods, it just made sense to have a variety of backup systems.

Heh, I’d be a lot more inclined to take a person’s comments seriously if they at least had a good grasp of their mother tongue’s vocabulary. If it was just one word and only happened once I’d be willing to chalk it up to a typo or even a smartphone or tablet’s autocomplete “feature”, but she used two words incorrectly more than once.

If someone doesn’t have a good command of their own native language, then I automatically assume their ignorance also extends into other areas and increases exponentially when they begin discussing subjects that are even less familiar to them.

The first is indeed retaliation, but in my understanding is legal. The second is a blatant attempt at voter intimidation. The intent of the “Wisconsin Poll Watcher Militia” can be summed up in this 1924 election refrain from Chicago:

“Who’ll carry the 41st and 42nd Wards? O’Banion, in his pistol pockets!”

For all I know, the group could be the troublemakers Scott Walker considered unleashing on kindergarten teachers because conservatives certainly would like to bash liberals/teachers/blacks/etc. Look at any and all comments to any article at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, or come up here to any south side bar in Milwaukee, don’t take much effort to get to the conservative goals and thoughts.

I’m not sure it makes you any safer in the moment, beyond what a flashing light will do, but there may be two closely related benefits - first, if you are hit, you’ll be able to go after the driver and prove he was at fault. Second, if drivers know they’re being recorded, they may give cyclists a wider berth.

Actually, O’Banion was supporting the Republicans in 1924 (this was back when Chicago had a functioning GOP) I deliberately chose a example of such intimidation that favored Republicans to prevent the accusation that I was committing the logical fallacy of tu quoque.

Flashing front and rear lights have been a common accessory for bicyclists in Mpls/St. Paul for a long time, and it’s very helpful. I was using them when they first came out in the 80’s. I don’t know how many bikers are using cameras here, but It would be great for documenting how often they blow through stop signs and stop lights.

In MN, cyclists are given full rights that motor vehicles have. They are allowed to use a full vehicle lane if the shoulder is too narrow, although I’ve gotten held up behind a bike using the full lane when there is no one parked anywhere on the street and they should have (by law) moved over into that lane.

I live only three miles from work, but there are over 20 stoplights on that route. Bicyclists like to brag that they can bike to work faster than I can drive the route, but if I could cut between all the cars in front of me and then run every stoplight, I could make it to work a lot faster too. I’d love to see the video of those cyclists doing the same route that I take.

…and keep your damned fixie off my lawn!!

The woman they interviewed kept emphasizing that it would make cyclists FEEL safer. I’m not a big fan of that as a reason to do things. That’s the same reason they give for making bike lanes, it will make cyclists FEEL safer. Meanwhile in the case of bike lanes, it is actually making them LESS safe. In the video, it showed a guy riding in a DZBL, a door zone bike lane. If somebody opened their door while parked there, that would take out a cyclist.

Having a record of the license of a vehicle that hit you would be invaluable, and worth running the camera, even though being hit from behind is about the most rare kind of bicycle wreck. A 360 degree camera set up would be better. It’s more likely a car will pull out or turn in front of you. (That’s only accounting for wrecks that are the fault of the driver. Cyclist-caused wrecks are at least 50% of wrecks.)

The only thing that makes cyclists ACTUALLY safer is education, mainly
for the cyclist, but also for auto drivers.

And as stpaulbear said, the blinky lights are good. It would also be good if drivers could tell they were being recorded, but it’s not clear to me that they would, even if they saw the Fly6 installed.

Oh, good. I was afraid that by the time they got that thing built, it would be obsolete or something. Taxpayers in a couple of counties actually voted in a sales tax increase on themselves to pay for it.

My only bike accident with a car was when someone who’d been sitting in their car threw the door open just as I was riding past. I got shish-kabobbed on the upper corner of the door, flew straight up in the air and landed flat on my back in the street. I lucked out in that I wasn’t injured severely although it took over 30 stitches to close the wound.

I ran into the woman the next day while I was back at the site looking for my keys and she was pissed that I’d given an incorrect description of her car and that I’d thrown her car door out of alignment. When the accident happened, she kept trying to say she was too busy to give info, but a total stranger had stopped to gather info and he also drove me to the hospital. I wish I would have given the woman a big hug and told her it was OK, mostly because I would have gotten blood all over her clothing and it would have been such sweet revenge.

She should be prosecuted, but bled upon would have been nice too.

We just had a bicyclist killed here. Not sure what/if the prosecution is going to be. Driver of the car was not arrested at the scene…
