A huge demonstration is taking place today in midtown Manhattan, expected to draw up to 100,000 people: the People’s Climate March, intended to focus the world’s attention on the need for action on climate change, as the disaster clock is ticking.

Unfortunately, not really - embedded tweets are inside an IFRAME that’s served from Twitter directly. While it’s possible to read the contents of that IFRAME, the HTML structure inside it is undocumented and Twitter tweaks and changes it frequently. So, although it’s possible to put together a hack to read the text, it probably wouldn’t be long before it stopped working because Twitter changed the structure again.

Compared to when I first registered here this issue has come a long way. Solar and wind are growing nicely. Regulations at the local level have come a long way, Something I posted about 3 or 4 years ago. Good to see such a large protest.

Looks like reflective solar with mirror farms are not going to work out, Natural gas consumption beats oil but only marginally. Is nuclear any more welcome than when the film China Syndrome came out? Probably not. Scariest thing about this for me is how hard it it to uncouple energy consumption growth and population growth. Next-How rough the math looks for carbon capture. Tight spot.

Yes, those text versions are the tweets before they’re rendered as embedded tweets — they’re stored in the DB that way. But once displayed in a comment, they’re rendered with a call to Twitter’s code and transformed into IFRAMEs.

You can always manually copy and paste the text, though.

I agree that he’s not an ideologue, but the “no intent to murder per se” argument gets a bit hair-splitty for my tastes. I have no doubt that Staline wanted to weaken them by killing a sufficient number to bring the rest into line.

It will probably have something like a 15 second window, meaning that data older than 15 second will fall off, unless the wearer marks it or someone watching copies it. OT, but just got done viewing Star 80, Bob Fosse’s film about the life and (horrific) death of Dorothy Stratten.

I must say, Eric Roberts as Paul Snider - Stratten’s husband/manager/murderer was a tour de force performance.

A depressing little flick, but a solid film that deals with the untimely death of a beautiful young woman at the hands of the would-be Svengali who first made her a sensation, and when he found she had slipped away from his grasp, destroyed her.

Yeah, it actually does matter. It was one dude who didn’t appear to be armed. Yes, he got inside, barely, but the Obamas weren’t there. I get that the location of the arrest is unacceptable from the standpoint of the Secret Service but the end result was that a veteran was captured without a regrettable incident, instead of being shot and killed on the White House lawn, or beset by dogs in full view of the public. They will obviously have to review their policies to make such entry impossible in the future, but the restraint of lethal force was a commendable decision and one I hope they don’t revisit.

It’s worth noting that all of human history happened after the climate stabilized during an exceptionally long interglacial period. Predictable weather, in terms of rainfall and growing seasons over much larger areas of the earth’s surface allowed mankind to farm certain places, build towns and later cities, etc with the expectation that they could depend on things staying the same year after year.

Indeed, it likely made civilization POSSIBLE, and we’re terribly foolish to risk screwing that up.

Well we will have to agree to disagree on this. Your are looking at it from a PR view (my interpretation) while I am looking at it from a security view. Regardless of his mental/military history he penetrated a secure zone and made it to the WH. This is unacceptable. At a minimum, the dogs should have been let loose.

As for it being public. Hell yes. Deters other idiots from wanting to try the same thing. Just my 2 cents.

OT, but I forgot to report on Thursday night’s porkchop/sauerkraut/apple with cinnamon and caraway seed experimental dinner.
MrBWS was kinda uncertain about the combination when he heard it, but when he walked in the door, it was “oh, wow”.
He said it was a definite keeper for the Backwoods menu selections, just needed more sauerkraut.

Conservationists. Conserv…ative. You’d think they’d be all over trying to protect the climate - even if only for the ability to shoot game, hunt, fish, etc.

Because climate change will affect the habitat for all those critters that they want to do that with. Fish will become more scarce or change where they are located. Fowl and fauna will go to where the food is, if there is any. Desertification will affect what creatures are found where. Some places will be inundated and natural habitats will be irrevocably be changed.

That’s what conservationists want to forestall - they want to protect the climate.

Conservatives, however, think climate change and global warming is a conspiracy. They simply don’t get it. When climate science is speaking in unison, and the only ones who are against them are paid shills for right wing outfits like Heartland, or you see funds traced back to Koch or oil/energy outfits, the only conspiracy is that these right wing outfits are out to lie to the public about the real dangers posed by continued reliance on those energy sources.

Good thing I switched out the bluetooth keyboard for my washable (if much less sexy) practical keyboard to use with the new PC because I spilled coffee all the hell over it this morning.

And now my older cat is being a pest. She spent like 10 minutes trying to squeeze herself between me & the laptop and force me to pet her by tapping my arm and head-butting my hand. Now she’s given up, parked herself on the pillow just above my head, and is making little indignant harrumphing noises whenever she thinks I might be paying attention. *eyeroll*

Indeed, the first paragraph:

China surpassed the European Union in levels of pollution levels per capita for the first time last year, propelling to a record the worldwide greenhouse gas emissions that are blamed for climate change.

Two grammatical errors and missing the whole point, just at the first paragraph.

I assume eventually the other errors will be corrected. Given that the headline misidentifies the EU as the US I don’t know if they’ll just erase the whole story.

This time, the person making the claim is a computational physicist. Last time I checked, that’s someone who isn’t a climatologist. I don’t go to a lawyer to find out if my blood sugar is high, even if the lawyer is a juris doctor.

So, why would I listen to someone who isn’t actually in the field of study that looks at climate?

This person argues that the science isn’t settled, rather claiming that the climate is always changing, and that we don’t know how much of the change is the result of what we’re doing to the climate.

Problem is, we know how much more particulates we’re putting into the atmosphere. We know how much CO2 we are putting in. And all the other chemicals too. We can see how those trends are causing temperatures to rise, ocean temps to rise, and how the atmosphere and climate is trying to integrate these changes - causing more extreme weather events to equalize temperatures.

But this guy gets WSJ space to spread his “just asking the questions” nonsense, when the facts simply don’t support his contentions.

Delivering food and consumer goods to these marchers. The bastards obviously delayed the delivery of Pie-onist’s new energy consuming appliance though so that’s got to sting.
I wonder what the overlap of these marchers is with the people who were delighted with saving GM and Chrysler, have demanded infrastructure spending so vehicles may safely pass, using construction materials that are made out of oil (LIKE ASPHALT) or use tremendous amounts of energy to create like concrete. And all to improve the economy by stimulating consumer demand so more oil must be used to create more consumer goods for more consumers to consume. Jesus I hope the overlap is zero. Otherwise people would be demanding politicians do completely opposite things.

So the science IS settled as far as I am concerned. The question is what are you going to do about it? Better still ask the climate scientists what they are going to do about the next time they fly in from all over the world so they can meet in Tokyo to tell everybody else to use less oil.
