Mobilizing for action on climate change
Environment • Views: 35,475

A huge demonstration is taking place today in midtown Manhattan, expected to draw up to 100,000 people: the People’s Climate March, intended to focus the world’s attention on the need for action on climate change, as the disaster clock is ticking.

Here’s a good post at Think Progress on this event and the other events planned for the coming week: Everything You Need to Know to Attend the Biggest Climate March in History.

Here’s the hashtag you can follow on Twitter for more info as it happens: #PeoplesClimate.

Unlike the “take back America” nutcakes, they’re actually bringing people in.

There were masses of people in the streets of Philadelphia this morning as well — but that was the 2014 Rock’n’Roll Half Marathon.

I dunno. Good as the cause may be, that’s not 100,000 people. Not even 10,000. Maybe 1,000. More pix?

Oddly, the mainstream media is giving very little air time to this story. It doesn’t fit the narrative.

Got a bad feeling about that one. Whoever it is simply dumped that comment and logged off. That’s not the usual behavior of someone who’s honestly trying to discuss something.

I really shouldn’t focus on fuckwits like Dim and instead should be happy for all the spectrum of faces filled with hope at the climate rally.

Instead I’m left with the realization that all the hatebreed moron ammosexuals will be better off when shit gets all Walking Dead, no doubt goaded on by rich atavists in the previous decades with their ‘think tanks’ and ideology of greed and corruption, easily operating in a society focused more on entertainment and self reinforcement than education and progress.

My only true satisfaction is seeing the Dim Hofts of the world getting their comeuppance.

Charles, a question-suggestion - would it be possible to tweak the quoting function so that the texts of the tweets are quoted?

Unfortunately, not really - embedded tweets are inside an IFRAME that’s served from Twitter directly. While it’s possible to read the contents of that IFRAME, the HTML structure inside it is undocumented and Twitter tweaks and changes it frequently. So, although it’s possible to put together a hack to read the text, it probably wouldn’t be long before it stopped working because Twitter changed the structure again.

Thanks. I just realized that text versions of the tweets do appear in the Spy, so decided to ask.

Compared to when I first registered here this issue has come a long way. Solar and wind are growing nicely. Regulations at the local level have come a long way, Something I posted about 3 or 4 years ago. Good to see such a large protest.

Looks like reflective solar with mirror farms are not going to work out, Natural gas consumption beats oil but only marginally. Is nuclear any more welcome than when the film China Syndrome came out? Probably not. Scariest thing about this for me is how hard it it to uncouple energy consumption growth and population growth. Next-How rough the math looks for carbon capture. Tight spot.

42 Charles Johnson  Sep 21, 2014 11:29:07am

re: #39 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

Yes, those text versions are the tweets before they’re rendered as embedded tweets — they’re stored in the DB that way. But once displayed in a comment, they’re rendered with a call to Twitter’s code and transformed into IFRAMEs.

You can always manually copy and paste the text, though.

According to Krugman, it actually won’t cost as much to the economy to handle climate change as some think. It will be disruptive, the oil companies won’t like it for sure, but it’s not going to kill capitalism.

A cold warrior indeed, but I don’t think he has allowed it to taint his historical scholarship (and he’s a Brit originally, i.e. European, which means he’s aware that history began before 1492).

A truly deranged take on the event, with matching commentary by freepers:

People’s Climate Change March Defiles the Lord’s Day

Organizers of the so-called People’s Climate March expect more than 100,000 people to fill the streets of midtown Manhattan on Sunday, demanding action on global warming.

It promises to be one of the largest cult gatherings in U.S. history.

It gets worse from there. This is a common and growing theme among RWNJ climate denialists, that climate action and science in general are either analogous to arcane fetishistic cults or literally are fetishistic cults. There is much effort to invoke Gaia, Stonehenge, and general paganism when environmental activists are mentioned. At the same time, these activists somehow manage to also be robotic materialists, atheists, and Marxist saboteurs.

He cannot be written off as an ideologue though. E.g. at around 2003 in a letter to Wheatcroft he posited that Stalin didn’t have an intent to murder Ukrainians as such - which goes against the argument that the famine was legally a genocide. Basically, he changed his mind, which ideologues usually don’t.

It’s great to see so many people out there marching in favor of action on climate change. Now, please forgive me while I go…

OT: Speaking of the media and with the last article downstairs still on my mind, I wanted to drop off this 200+ page report I came across from 2002 that was paid for by the Justice Department during the Bush administration. There’s some very interesting stuff in it:

Media Power & Information Control: A Study of Police Organizations & Media Relations

It’s really annoying how many entities seem to be constantly trying to control & manipulate “we the people” (or at least our perceptions) by the way in which they frame things. Things like Twitter must be a nightmare for them—I wonder how long it will survive and what will follow it…

I agree that he’s not an ideologue, but the “no intent to murder per se” argument gets a bit hair-splitty for my tastes. I have no doubt that Staline wanted to weaken them by killing a sufficient number to bring the rest into line.

re: #55 CuriousLurker

The one thing I can see that will follow will be people wearing cameras full time, and images being streamed to a site. It will probably have something like a 15 second window, meaning that data older than 15 second will fall off, unless the wearer marks it or someone watching copies it. We’ll end up with a whole lot of amateur porn (not any different than twitter) and a lot of real time shots of things.

The left is racist because they are so good at hiding their racism and calling the right racist.

I mean, there’s no proof that the Democratic party is racist, and that ‘the left’ is racist in it’s belief system… but that means they’re hiding it really really well. Nice try racists, I’m onto you.

He doesn’t actually care about them, he just sees them as useful for fighting ISIS. If he was told that Kurds settled in the US were building a mosque in his town he’d go clear around the bend in outrage.

OT, but just got done viewing Star 80, Bob Fosse’s film about the life and (horrific) death of Dorothy Stratten.

I must say, Eric Roberts as Paul Snider - Stratten’s husband/manager/murderer was a tour de force performance.

A depressing little flick, but a solid film that deals with the untimely death of a beautiful young woman at the hands of the would-be Svengali who first made her a sensation, and when he found she had slipped away from his grasp, destroyed her.

Call the landlord now and arrange a place to hide the spare key (or the key the landlord gets from your home and stashes for you).

Buy a chain, put a spare key on the chain, hang the chain around your neck and never take it off. Or stash your own spare key somewhere you can get it in a case like this.

The 42-year-old Gonzalez was discharged in 2003 after serving six years and completing his military service obligation. He retired in 2012 as a result of a disability, after serving roughly seven more years, according to his military record.

The military does not provide details about a soldier’s disability due to privacy considerations.

According to court documents, Gonzales told Secret Service agents after being apprehended that the “atmosphere was collapsing” and that he had to tell the president so he could warn the public.

I get that the location of the arrest is unacceptable from the standpoint of the Secret Service but the end result was that a veteran was captured without a regrettable incident, instead of being shot and killed on the White House lawn, or beset by dogs in full view of the public. It’s worth noting that all of human history happened after the climate stabilized during an exceptionally long interglacial period. Predictable weather, in terms of rainfall and growing seasons over much larger areas of the earth’s surface allowed mankind to farm certain places, build towns and later cities, etc with the expectation that they could depend on things staying the same year after year.

Indeed, it likely made civilization POSSIBLE, and we’re terribly foolish to risk screwing that up.

P.S. One totally obvious upgrade the Secret Service could implement that would have prevented Gonzalez from getting inside the building, automatic locking doors that trigger off the ground incursion alarm sensors. The locks could also be tied into RFID sensors carried by the agents, so that they could move about freely during an emergency.

OT, but I forgot to report on Thursday night’s porkchop/sauerkraut/apple with cinnamon and caraway seed experimental dinner.
MrBWS was kinda uncertain about the combination when he heard it, but when he walked in the door, it was “oh, wow”.
He said it was a definite keeper for the Backwoods menu selections, just needed more sauerkraut.

Conservationists. Conserv…ative. You’d think they’d be all over trying to protect the climate - even if only for the ability to shoot game, hunt, fish, etc.

Because climate change will affect the habitat for all those critters that they want to do that with. Fish will become more scarce or change where they are located. Fowl and fauna will go to where the food is, if there is any. Desertification will affect what creatures are found where. Some places will be inundated and natural habitats will be irrevocably be changed.

That’s what conservationists want to forestall - they want to protect the climate.

Conservatives, however, think climate change and global warming is a conspiracy. They simply don’t get it. When climate science is speaking in unison, and the only ones who are against them are paid shills for right wing outfits like Heartland, or you see funds traced back to Koch or oil/energy outfits, the only conspiracy is that these right wing outfits are out to lie to the public about the real dangers posed by continued reliance on those energy sources.

Good thing I switched out the bluetooth keyboard for my washable (if much less sexy) practical keyboard to use with the new PC because I spilled coffee all the hell over it this morning.

And now my older cat is being a pest. She spent like 10 minutes trying to squeeze herself between me & the laptop and force me to pet her by tapping my arm and head-butting my hand. Now she’s given up, parked herself on the pillow just above my head, and is making little indignant harrumphing noises whenever she thinks I might be paying attention. *eyeroll*

Damn. When I commented on the first view of the march, way back at the top of this thread, I thought it looked like a typical little NYC rally, maybe a thousand people. Later pix reveal something gigantic. If only all those people were corporations, there might be some hope for the planet. //

As far as the Fox fears and tears over commies and radicals, well, at least back when I lived in NYC, there were about a hundred actual communists who would turn up for any public occasion whatsoever, from the opening of the thousandth phony Famous Ray’s Pizza or the debut of a new mime in front of the main library to the announcement of a sanitation workers’ strike. So what?

News services evidently can’t afford editors anymore. Bloomberg shouts:

China Beats U.S. in Per-Capita Pollution for First Time

One problem - the headline is wrong (and I’m not even referring to “capital”.

Indeed, the first paragraph:

China surpassed the European Union in levels of pollution levels per capita for the first time last year, propelling to a record the worldwide greenhouse gas emissions that are blamed for climate change.

Two grammatical errors and missing the whole point, just at the first paragraph.

236 freetoken  Sep 21, 2014 5:16:27pm

re: #235 freetoken

Note the “l” in the “capital” is still in the url, though it ous out of the headline.

I assume eventually the other errors will be corrected. Given that the headline misidentifies the EU as the US I don’t know if they’ll just erase the whole story.

Shocking to find Drudge touting someone claiming that “the science isn’t settled”.

This time, the person making the claim is a computational physicist. Last time I checked, that’s someone who isn’t a climatologist. I don’t go to a lawyer to find out if my blood sugar is high, even if the lawyer is a juris doctor.

So, why would I listen to someone who isn’t actually in the field of study that looks at climate?

This person argues that the science isn’t settled, rather claiming that the climate is always changing, and that we don’t know how much of the change is the result of what we’re doing to the climate.

Problem is, we know how much more particulates we’re putting into the atmosphere. We know how much CO2 we are putting in. And all the other chemicals too. We can see how those trends are causing temperatures to rise, ocean temps to rise, and how the atmosphere and climate is trying to integrate these changes - causing more extreme weather events to equalize temperatures.

But this guy gets WSJ space to spread his “just asking the questions” nonsense, when the facts simply don’t support his contentions.

His bio:

Dr. Koonin was undersecretary for science in the Energy Department during President Barack Obama’s first term and is currently director of the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University. His previous positions include professor of theoretical physics and provost at Caltech, as well as chief scientist of BP, where his work focused on renewable and low-carbon energy technologies.

re: #252 Eventual Carrion
The truckers?
Delivering food and consumer goods to these marchers. The bastards obviously delayed the delivery of Pie-onist’s new energy consuming appliance though so that’s got to sting.
I wonder what the overlap of these marchers is with the people who were delighted with saving GM and Chrysler, have demanded infrastructure spending so vehicles may safely pass, using construction materials that are made out of oil (LIKE ASPHALT) or use tremendous amounts of energy to create like concrete. And all to improve the economy by stimulating consumer demand so more oil must be used to create more consumer goods for more consumers to consume. Jesus I hope the overlap is zero. Otherwise people would be demanding politicians do completely opposite things.

So the science IS settled as far as I am concerned. The question is what are you going to do about it? Better still ask the climate scientists what they are going to do about the next time they fly in from all over the world so they can meet in Tokyo to tell everybody else to use less oil.
