St. Louis County Police Semi-Apologize for “How to Handle the Media” Flyer, Delete It From Their Website

“Make something out of nothing”
US News • Views: 29,955

The St. Louis County and Municipal Police Academy has responded to the uproar over their course on how to handle media after an officer-involved shooting, and the instructor says he’s “outraged” that anyone would “read between the lines.”

Police Academy spokesman Brian Schellman sort of apologizes in the usual non-apology “if anyone was offended” way:

Schellman also issued the following statement: “Chief of Police Jon Belmar and his command staff were unaware of the flier and its wording until the subject was brought up by several members of the media. The St. Louis County Police Department recognizes the sensitive nature of this flier in the wake of Mr. Brown’s death, and the events that transpired in Ferguson. This flier has been worded in nearly the same manner for all of Mr. Rosenthal’s prior teachings at our academy, with the exception of the newly added lines referencing Ferguson. Being that the flier was sent by our police academy, we apologize for anyone hurt by the wording of the flier. We believe Mr. Rosenthal’s use of the terms ‘900-pound gorilla’ and ‘feeding the animals’ were mentioning police departments from across the nation dealing with the media and meant no racial harm.”

The instructor, Rick Rosenthal, focuses on the racially-charged language, denying he meant it that way — but completely missing the point that the entire idea of a “highly entertaining” course teaching police how to control and “handle” the media after gunning someone down is, in itself, pretty outrageous.

Rosenthal said that was nothing racial about his flier.

“It’s outrageous that someone would try to read between lines and make something out of nothing,” he said.

He also issued a statement, which read in part: “The term ‘feeding the animals’ is a tongue-in-cheek reference to dealing with mainstream news media reporters (the ‘animals’ - I used to be one, myself.) The term ‘900 pound gorilla’ is a similar tongue-in-cheek reference to news reporters, particularly those who aggressively strain the bounds of First Amendment privilege while ignoring their responsibilities for fairness and accuracy, especially as defined by the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics. I have been using these terms in my programs for the past 20 years. I strongly reject any suggestion that these terms are new, or are in any way a specific reference to the recent tragic events in Ferguson, Missouri, or are in any way a racial slur. Any suggestion to the contrary is just plain wrong.”

It’s clear that the contentious attitude we saw from St. Louis police during the Ferguson protests was no fluke; it stems from an organization that sees itself in opposition to the community and to the media. And these statements do nothing to change that evaluation.

It’s unclear from these statements whether the course has actually been canceled, but the offensive flyer has now been removed from the St. Louis County website. Here’s a screenshot, for the record.

I’m actually willing to buy that the “gorilla” and “animal” terms were in fact directed at the members of the media, and not at the members of the community.

However, in light of their behavior in Ferguson, and with alleged cops pointing rifles at protestors and calling them “animals”, the use of these terms on this flier only proves their stupendous incompetence.

These people should not have the authority to arrest a stray dog, let alone people.

Good.

The Obama administration went on a regulatory offensive against U.S. companies that move to lower-tax countries, issuing new rules that take away major benefits of the deals.

In a multipronged attack, the administration took action under five separate sections of the tax code to make so-called inversions harder to accomplish and less profitable.

Three of the moves are aimed at blocking inverted companies from using techniques—sometimes known as “hopscotching”—to get access to their offshore cash without paying U.S. tax on it. Those would apply to deals closed on or after Sept. 22.

Another move makes it more difficult for U.S. firms to skirt current ownership standards in inverting. Still another move would make it harder for U.S. firms to spin off subsidiaries overseas.

First doing a bit of MBF with Scott Brown and Ted Cruz.
Second by ignoring that expatriation is an old issue long kicked around.
Thirdly and most worrisomely, by trying (as do all paleo-conservatives) to make a culture-test the basis of what is being an “American”, under the guise of being concerned about how people are treated.

What Does It Mean to Be an American?

54 teleskiguy  Sep 22, 2014 4:02:08pm

The contempt the powers that be in St. Louis have for the citizens in poor black towns (mostly in the northern part of St. Louis County) is the byproduct of nearly a century of white supremacism and white flight. These attitudes are deeply ingrained. St. Louis being one of the most segregated cities in the country is no accident. What the citizens of North County need to do moving forward is increase voter turnout substantially. I read somewhere that turnout in municipal elections in North County is extremely low. Apathy is no way to elect government, and hopefully those in Ferguson and the rest of North County see the light moving forward.

Watch though. Turnout will increase, then we’ll see the dirty tricks designed for voter suppression employed by the white power structure.

BTW, FT, do you plan on reading Carrier’s latest book? I’m half through it, and while I remain skeptical of his “positive” thesis, I find the book to be a “tour de force” of sorts, despite some reservations. It’s certainly the best mythicist case so far, and if not quite proving mythicism, the book nevertheless makes a good case for moving towards “the middle” - agnosticism.

I assume you mean On the Historicity of Jesus: Why We Might Have Reason for Doubt , yes?

I read very few books. I mentioned the King book becoming a Hulu miniseries in part because it was the first fiction book I’ve read in at least 20 years, and that was two years ago and I’ve not read a fiction book since.

If Carrier’s latest book ends up in the local library system maybe I’ll request it.

To me the whole issue is an example of a debate about historiography. The entire field of “history” is one of those things that few people ponder. Most people accept “history” or just think this or that historian/author has an agenda and thus can be dismissed whole.

I think the idea of writing history is one with lots more pitfalls than many people give thought.

Recently I started rewatching the old (year 2000) BBC series by Simon Schama on the History of Britain. It’s a good series I think with Schama being a particularly eloquent narrator. Yet I realize that I am seeing the past through Schama’s (and even more so, the BBC’s) lenses.

Choosing what to leave out of a “history” is telling.

And this is where I think the history of mythology of “Jesus” efforts sometimes get a bit thin. It seems to me that the real issue before us is the history of the Christian religion and communities of the 1st century. What and why did the religious communities that self-declare as “Christian” start in Egypt, Syria/Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, and Rome, all in the 1st century. The actual founders/starting points in this communities is a topic that is remarkably vague, for being such important events.

Therein I think lay more insight for the historian of “Jesus”, since everything we know about the hypothetical “Jesus” comes to us from believers in such (save for that one debatable passage by Josephus.)

Yep, that book. The point you make about the murkiness of the origins is the one I’ve been mulling over myself. Basically, as things stand now, historicity is a secondary point, a mere detail, which is why I came to dislike McGrath’s constant comparisons of mythicists with creationists or climate deniers (even if the former quite often reason like the latter), where what is being denied basically forms an overarching framework in each field; “nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution” is true. The same would not be true for historicity - were it disproven, nothing much would change in the field, the scholars would proceed with their studies of early Christian communities or of compositional layers in the NT books.

The conservative scholars tend to propose more sophisticated versions of the earlier naive view that those were personally written by Bill Gates. The Copenhagen school thinks that while XP probably existed, Win 3.1 was certainly mythical. The consensus in the field is that Windows is a patchwork of various modified earlier sources, but there are dozens of theories as to how they came to be bundled together.

Given my limited lifetime I’ve decided that I can’t read everything and while Carrier’s book probably has some merit here or there, at least on this subject I’m not sure I’m going to spend a whole lot of time reading more.

Substantially, there is no written record from the 1st century or archaeological evidence for the idealized-by-all-those-advent-plays for the “Jesus” of so many religious practices.

All that exists are the religious teachings of the followers of late 1st century and early 2nd century religious communities.

Thus the entire effort trying to tackle the “historicity” is one that is not going to be pushed forward, until any new archeological discovery is made, the probability of which is remote.

So install Classic Shell. Bam, problem solved.

I’ve been running Win8 since the last day you could upgrade from Win7 for like $20. Its nice to have an OS I am absolutely in the clear about owning - my Win7Ultimate was a MSDN copy I inherited from Dell.

With Classic Shell there isn’t much UI difference from Win7, and you get a lot of quality of life improvements - like when copying files there is now a graph showing you how fast its going, and when doing multiple copies the windows merge into one, handling all that better.

But by far the most nifty thing is the support for reinstallation - it keeps a backup copy of the Windows folder so reinstalling takes like 5 minutes. Its sick.

That was Windows 8’s big mistake. Microsoft tried to play the best of both worlds and instead got the worst. 8.1 was an improvement, but by then it was too little, too late. Now they’re left in the unenviable position of playing catch-up to giants. How the tables have turned.

I think if you use a computer for the internet, then a tablet is fine. If you work all the time and the computer is your main tool like it is for me, then a desktop or laptop is your best choice. Phones are good when out and about.

But with computing these days, a big tablet with ports for a classic keyboard and mouse/stylus input might be the future. A good size monitor/screen will also be necessary if the tablet isn’t large enough, or maybe another port for external monitor.

It will all be about processor power and what programming like the Adobe Suites need for you to be productive. Stuff is getting so small the processor and memory can be in just about any kind of a ‘box’ these days.

And then there is the cloud type of storage which will become more and more cloud processing with programming on the cloud. All you will need is a connection, monitor, keyboard. mouse/stylus. I can see just connecting to Adobe and everything will be there for a fee. Not that I like that, but if affordable, stable, etc. it might be the future. Just pack up your keyboard, mouse and monitor/tablet and you can work from anywhere.

Sorry, but I’m almost done with cooking for the evening.

Apple ginger soup is done (and some frozen for later) - we went to the local orchard and picked the apples ourselves, so we’ve got ‘em as fresh as they come.

The Moroccan brisket is cooling, and I’ve got a chicken and olives that I’ve got to finish along with roasted potatoes.

But maybe I could swing a teriyaki marinade with jalepeno pepper and garlic with rice wine vinegar.

OMG.

I just had some peanut butter.

The other day I ended up getting 5 stitches for what started out as an ingrown hair. Seriously no fun. Apparently I am also immune to lidocaine.

I just blocked & deleted an entire Twitter conversation I had with some asshole who thinks that requiring a bakery to sell cake to gay customers is EXACTLY THE SAME as requiring halal/kosher/vegan restaurants to cook bacon.

Yes, it is. And very common. I have my own horror stories.

Oh. My. God. This is outrageous. I swear, my goal is to never have to go to a hospital for anything. Ever. I’m glad the Times exposed this. Maybe it will trigger action to stop these practices, which really amount to theft and fraud in some cases.

A bakery won’t become non-kosher if it sells to someone non-Jewish, it won’t become non-halal if it sells to a non-Muslim.

I performed poorly in a race on Saturday because I was sick. I was sick because I had very little sleep all week prior to the race. I had little sleep because I was up late watching The Roosevelts on PBS. FDR was a Democratic president who inherited an economic crisis. PBO is a Democratic President who inherited an economic crisis. I there fore blame Obama for my poor race performance on Saturday.

It’s not really hard once you get the hang of it.
