Inexcusable: Ferguson Police Wear Armbands Saying, “I Am Darren Wilson”

There’s something deeply wrong in Ferguson
US News • Views: 32,908

Following the unexplained fire yesterday that consumed the impromptu Michael Brown memorial in Ferguson, Missouri, we saw another night of unrest, with some vandalism reported.

And today we’re learning that some of the police officers in Ferguson last night were wearing armbands that said, “I am Darren Wilson.”

It might as well say “I’m going to murder you and get away with it.”

@Rebeccarivas asks Johnson about the officers who were wearing “I Am Darren Wilson” armbands. He said they were doing that as individuals.

So they’re just allowed to wear any kind of “personal statement” on their official uniform?

WTF?

Probably a good place to repost this from downstairs:

9 Charles Johnson  Sep 24, 2014 10:55:51am

When a police officer is in uniform responding to civil unrest over a police shooting, they SHOULD NOT be able to just say “I’m wearing this armband as an individual.” They are NOT just “individuals” at that point — they’re supposed to be enforcing the law, and they’re representing the government of Missouri.

This is disgusting and inexcusable.

Well I hate to correct you Charles but as far as Ferguson PD goes everything seems wrong. Who the police are. What they think of anyone but themselves. What they think of minorities. How to do an officer involved shoot investigation. How to deal with a protest or the media. They don’t understand how the 1st amendment works.

If you’re on duty, you’re an official state representative. Wearing that bracelet is uncalled for, and it disrespects the citizens these police officers have sworn to protect and serve.

But apparently the social compact in STL and Ferguson is different than that which law enforcement is supposed to aspire to. In Ferguson, the police are only supposed to protect their own, and incite the community further even though by all accounts, the shooting of Mike Brown was an excessive use of force by any measure, and likely unjustified based on all the facts and evidence that is publicly available (no thanks to the police departments that have lied and obfuscated about every last detail).

BTW, can we be clear about which police forces were wearing these bracelets? Was it the FPD alone, or was it the FPD and STL County Police.

This isn’t just an idle question.

While both have shown complete disregard to the law, law enforcement, and public safety from the moments after Brown was shot and killed by FPD Officer Wilson, it was the county police that escalated the situation by bringing in the riot cops and the armored vehicles and the cops who trained their loaded weapons at protesters who were peacefully demonstrating.

Both police departments need to be thoroughly cleaned up.

The First Amendment, how the fuck does it work?

“As a segment of the U.S. population, Islam is relatively small, numerically, and gives scant indication of its capacity ever to attain its ends by lawful means. The peril inherent in the existence of Islam arises not from its numbers, but from its failure to acknowledge any limitation as to the nature of its activities, and its dedication to the proposition that the present system of government of the United States ultimately must be brought to ruin by any available means, including resort to force and violence. Holding that doctrine, its role as the agency of a hostile foreign power renders its existence a clear and present danger to the security of the United States. It is the means whereby individuals are seduced into the service of Islam, trained to do its bidding, and directed and controlled in the conspiratorial performance of their revolutionary services. Therefore, the organization known as Islam shall be outlawed in the United States.”

The NAACP says they’re going to ask the DOJ to look into it. Good.

I don’t know about the legal aspect, but when you factor in Mike DeWine’s slimy fingerprints, I’d say the chances are slim.

Mike DeWine Has Serious Conflicts Of Interest In Beavercreek Walmart Shooting Case

The problem starts with Mike DeWine’s daughter, Alice K. DeWine, who is an Assistant Prosecutor with the Greene County Prosecutor’s office…

Mike DeWine appointed Mark Piepmeier, an attorney from the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s office, as special prosecutor in the case. Interestingly, Piepmeier made a campaign donation to DeWine on July 31st, less than a month before he received the appointment. And he had previously donated to the campaign of Mike’s son Pat, a judge in Ohio’s 1st District Court of Appeals…

And then:

DeWine Continues To Control Wal-Mart Shooting Case While Special Prosecutor Vacations In France

Piepmeier who, according to sources familiar with the situation, is on vacation somewhere in France…

While we all wait anxiously for Piepmeier’s return, DeWine seems to be running the show…

I’m a defense attorney, not a prosecutor, and in a different state from Ohio, however, if the Grand Jury doesn’t indict someone, there is nothing to prevent the prosecutors from presenting the case to another Grand Jury. This is common if they don’t have enough evidence or if a contradiction comes to light. Also as a defense attorney I have very seldom seen a prosecutor not get an indictment he wants. I listen to Grand Jury proceedings all the time and the prosecutor basically tells the jurors to indict or not.

XENIA, Ohio (AP and WLWT) —A special grand jury has declined to indict either police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a Tri-State man at a Dayton-area Walmart.

But the U.S. Justice Department says it will investigate the shooting death of John Crawford III, 22, of Fairfield. U.S. Attorney Carter Stewart in Columbus said the department’s Civil Rights Division, the FBI, and his office will conduct an independent review of the case.

To be fair, some right wing gun sites online have been very, very critical of police reaction in this case and today’s decision will not be well received. Since Ohio is an open carry state, they regard the Crawford’s killing as a threat to every other gun owner in the state since he was legally posessing the pellet gun at the time of his death.

What’s not being talked about is just why Obama isn’t actually going to Congress to ask for authority. Could it be because they have a long track record of NOT wanting to work with him? Could it be he doesn’t want to put Democrats in the line of fire before election day? Maybe. But, the majority of Americans approve of strikes in Syria. So, I’m not sure why that would effect Dems this November. I think Obama welcomes the debate, but he’s not going to putter around and wait for them to do it, especially when they don’t want to work with him. He has the authority under the AUMF. Yes, that is shady at best, but what else does he have to work with? If Republicans and (some) Democrats don’t like it, get off your ass and get back to work to change it. But don’t go around blaming the President for DOING HIS JOB, when you won’t do yours.

Forbes Drops Contributor for Column on ‘Drunk Female Students’ and Frats

Forbes magazine has dumped contributor Bill Frezza after a controversial column he wrote about how drunk female students are a threat to fraternities all over the country.

Frezza contended that fraternities simply don’t have proper guidelines in place to deal with drunk girls who show up, and “it is precisely those irresponsible women that the brothers must be trained to identify and protect against, because all it takes is one to bring an entire fraternity system down.”

And hours after his column got noticed, Forbes told the New York Daily News that Frezza is no longer a contributor. Frezza still stands by his argument, and is glad that his piece helped spur on a conversation.

Something like this works for me…. the clandestine sale of weapons to Iran, which was to encourage the release of U.S. hostages then held in Lebanon. North formulated the second part of the plan, which was to divert proceeds from the arms sales to support the Contra rebel groups in Nicaragua (which had been specifically prohibited under the Boland Amendment). Flip flops are a perfectly acceptable form of footwear.

I horrified my mother by wearing them when I was in a friend’s wedding, but the bride was wearing Vibram Five-Fingers, so she thought it was great.

File under things you probably don’t really care to know:

Jessa, Jinger Duggar Visit Creation Museum, Explain Beliefs: Picture

With their Nov. 1 wedding right around the corner, Jessa Duggar and her fiancé Ben Seewald took some time to share their beliefs with their fans on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The couple and Jessa’s younger sister Jinger visited the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, a long way away from their hometown of Tontitown, Arkansas.

Apparently each Duggar child has their own fan base?

Posting a picture of one of the museum’s charts about dinosaurs, Duggar wrote out a long explanation of her thoughts on creationism.

If there really was a worldwide flood (as the Bible speaks of), what would the evidence be? Billions of dead things buried in rock layers, laid down by water, all over the earth. And that’s exactly what we find. Billions of dead things buried in rock layers, laid down by water, all over the earth. An Evolutionist and a Creationist will look at the same thing, but come to different conclusions because of their different starting points.

Sigh….

But the thing that got me more was how US magazine described as “long” a short paragraph of 4 sentences. Perhaps for the readers of US that is “long”.

Billions of dead things buried in rock layers, that somehow magically stratify by type, such that you find type A in layer 1 but not in layer 3, and you find type B in layer 3, but not in layer 1, but you find both in layer 2. So, they’re proposing a world wide flood that killed all these things at the same time, but deposited them in morphological progressions, like a zillion-layer parfait.

Hundreds of Denver area students walk out of class to protest conservative US history proposal

[…]

The school board proposal that triggered the walkout calls of instructional materials that present positive aspects of the nation and its heritage. It would establish a committee to regularly review texts and course plans, starting with Advanced Placement history, to make sure materials “promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free-market system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights” and don’t “encourage or condone civil disorder, social strike or disregard of the law.”

The proposal from Julie Williams, part of the board’s conservative majority, has not been voted on and was put on hold last week. She didn’t return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment Tuesday, but previously told Chalkbeat Colorado, a school news website, that she recognizes there are negative events that are part of U.S. history that need to be taught.

“There are things we may not be proud of as Americans,” she said. “But we shouldn’t be encouraging our kids to think that America is a bad place.”

No, no! I actually mentioned this to one of them, asking whether he really believed in different sedimentation rates for things with a density of about 1g/mL at 1g, and he wanted to know more about sedimentation rates.

When I pointed out that things of different densities deposit in the SAME level, he told me my ‘Evolutionary Worldview’ meant I couldn’t object to rape. (clearly conflating scientific theory with philosophy).

I’ve been reading more about the Walmart case. It seems the prosecutor is saying that there is no crime because the officers only acted in the way that they’ve been trained. They had recently completed a course in how to take down an active shooter. So if they are trained to shoot all people that they think may be dangerous on sight, then how can they possibly be at fault? Any shooting of any person who may or may not be handling a gun, as long as there is the slightest pretext for believing that it is so allows the officers to kill. I know that is the way it has appeared from recent events, but it sobering to hear it articulated so plainly.

The prosecutor just handed any civil attorney a gift. Any lawsuit against individual officers is limited. Now he opened it up to liability of the entire department.

In contrast, I’m pretty sure YEC invokes flood geology for pretty much all geological features seen today. They don’t have much choice in the matter since they have to reject all real knowledge of geology to maintain their world view.

Cops hold down man with Huntington’s disease

In the video, as the officers hold Bane to the ground, he displays frequent episodes of chorea.

“Stop it!” the officer holding Bane’s head to the ground shouts. Another says: “Stop fighting us.”

“I can’t breathe, goddamit,” Bane says desperately. “Help me. I can’t breathe…. Help me, sir, please help me.”

As Bane appears to choke, one of the officers orders him to “stop spitting.”

“Help me, please,” Bane pleads again. “I’m not trying to fight you guys.”

Haven’t seen this mentioned yet today:

Conductor Christopher Hogwood dies aged 73

Hogwood worked with many leading orchestras around the world and was considered one of the most influential exponents of the early-music movement.

The conductor founded the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) in 1973 and directed the academy across six continents for some 30 years.

The AAM also made more than 200 CDs, including the first-ever complete cycle of Mozart symphonies on period instruments.

Among his most famous recordings include the 1980 version of Handel’s Messiah with Emma Kirkby and James Bowman, which was named by BBC Music Magazine as one of the top 20 recordings of all time.

Hogwood studied keyboard at Cambridge University with Rafael Puyana and Mary Potts and later with Zuzana Ruzickova and Gustav Leonhardt.

His first positions were as a keyboard player and musicologist with the Academy of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields under Sir Neville Marriner, and was a founder member of the Early Music Consort of London.

He was the artistic director of the King’s Lynn Festival and Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society. He was also a tutor at Harvard University, honorary professor of music at the University of Cambridge and a professor-at-large at Cornell University in the US.

Haven’t seen this mentioned yet today:

I have a copy of the Hogwood Messiah. Beautiful, and the boys’ choir in place of the usual women’s choir is angelic and ethereal.

Mind you, some of the phrasing is a little jarring. In the aria “And the trumpets shall sound” instead of ‘be RAISED incorRUPTible’, it’s “inCORrupTIBle”.

I have to give him this: I don’t think he, himself, is making it up.

I think he’s talking to people who are making it up and he’s just uncritically citing it because it feeds his confirmation bias.

I don’t even know if confirmation bias explains Chuck enough. How about adding a lot of naivety and over-eagerness to that too?

And didn’t he mention his high IQ? That is way open to discussion.

I’m happy to have an on the record conversation with you but you have lied and said that I’m making stuff up. That’s libelous.

The statement probably (IANAL) wouldn’t be considered libel anyway, and I doubt CCJ would want to walk into court considering he’s ignoring a grand jury summons (subpoena?).

There’s federal laws about exactly that. It is flatly forbidden to remove or hide identifiers.

What federal laws are you talking about? The only references I can find are to individual state regulations.

Most of these allegations are coming out of California, where police are trying to clear the Occupy Oakland camp. In addition to a number of tweets, there has been video corroborating the accusations. For those who can’t view it, it depicts an Oakland officer who has taped over his name.

In California, uniformed police cannot hide badges. In fact, California Penal Code § 830.10 specifically requires:

Any uniformed peace officer shall wear a badge, nameplate, or other device which bears clearly on its face the identification number or name of the officer.

It’s possible that there are exceptions, such as when a uniformed officer must hide his identity for safety reasons. But such exceptions would probably not apply to Occupy Oakland.

While you’re at it did you ever find that mysterious state law you asserted required your school to keep all emails ever sent or received on their system, dating to before the invention of email?

At my school, emails are remotely backed up and kept in perpetuity. This has been the case for decades. All in accordance with law.

These are just two examples of what seems to be a long term pattern, you believing things are true simply because you think they should be true. You might want to research these kinds of claims in advance of posting them, to see if they’re actually conducive to reality and not the products of confirmation bias.

From my viewing of it, he’s standing at the end of an aisle in the part of the store that forms a corner. From the video’s viewpoint, he’s standing facing the shelving on the left kinda swinging the rifle around a bit with his right arm but never really having the barrel rise above his knee. From his left is where the cops come. All of a sudden you see him jerk and kind of lunge / fall to get around the end of the shelving while dropping the toy. Then you see one of the city’s “finest” advance forward with an assault rifle (probably an AR-15 or a variant) at the ready. Crawford then comes back around the corner on his feet and the cop looks like he finishes the murder from a few feet away with at least one shot. Audio is kind of spotty so hard to say exactly how many shots were fired.

463 rhuarc  Sep 24, 2014 5:06:26pm

The video is split screen showing 2 different cameras. One is focused solely on the aisle Crawford is standing in while the other is focused on a set of sliding doors. In the view with the doors you see the cops (just the lower half of their legs) stop at the end of some shelving for a split second like they’re hiding. I would be curious to know how much they could actually see of Crawford from where he was standing. And it was from THAT position that they initially fired on him.

And, ALL Americans should be real concerned about all these police shootings. We are all, no matter color, age, health, etc., standing in the same place as the victims. It no longer seems to matter what kind of a threat you are if you are any threat at all.

And if they don’t start charging some of the killer cops and review and change police tactics this is only going to become more common for all.

What is there to stop a cop from just gunning you down? That is something we are all going to have to face, Right now it looks to be nothing.

Absolutely awesome (emphasis in original):

But otherwise, please just stop being so ridiculously horrible. Stop pretending it’s the actions and manners of Obama that you object to, and just admit that you hate, hate, hate him with all your being, and that nothing he does will please you. Because this is getting old. You look ridiculous. You look like fools.

And stop kidding yourself— you have yet to drum up anyone not already a paid-up member of the Obama Haters Club to care about all your other scandals, so what’s the point here? Or is it that the audience at Fox News and Breitbart need their fix of outrage, like an addiction?

I’m sure I speak for many when I say I am just tired of your umbrella-gates and all the other pointless nitpicking. All you’ve convinced anyone outside your circle of is that you are petty, small people.

With the John Crawford video out…what will happen to our AG Mike DeWine?

I hope this gets real hot on him and a few others in this state.

Did you see the tweets of Shaun King this morning?

It may just be the people in the circles I run with. Fish country tends to be a bit of a bubble.

What length is the pump?

485 mm uncompressed, 455 compressed. Black, and I measured it with the plastic Silca head on it.

Are you two actually talking about a bicycle pump, or something else?

No photo of what they talked about on NPR yet. The one I have is just one of these:

But it doesn’t have the logo on the barrel. :(

Yes, I caught most of those earlier. Absolutely disgusting.

There cannot be enough heat built under Mike DeWine’s butt. He put himself directly in this and hopefully the people of Ohio are watching and turn this into the reason to boot him outta office.

And, then I hope he gets called on the carpet by the Feds. Maybe they can’t indict him for anything, but hopefully they can paint him in a really bad light for this so the people remember this is your Ohio Republicans and they need to be changed the hard way…by force.

Happens. Lots of memes out there. I’m sure I could find several anti Hello Kitty ones if I looked.

hello kitty has no mouth

the hello kitty people have an explanation of why this is, but im sure it just begs to be explicated by wingnut “theories”

I see Vinod Khosla is going to have to allow access to Martin’s Beach.

I daresay he’ll appeal.

Probably will and I found this bit to be utter bullshit.

Mallach, however, ruled that Khosla’s conduct “was in good faith” and that penalties and fines are not justified.

Hello Kitty has no mouth, but she must scream. That is why her head is so big.

Hello Kitty has no mouth, yet she speaks the truth.

Hello Kitty has no mouth, so where has all the porridge gone?

Yeah, he probably can’t afford the fines.

OT FYI: Oh boy, here we go. You know that new “Open Mosque” that was recently opened in Cape Town—the one that was supposed to be gay-friendly? The one that (5 days later) was supposed to get shut down due to not having any parking spaces? The whole thing is starting to stink:

‘Message on new mosque is fake’

Cape Town - A Muslim cleric body, the United Ulama Council of South Africa, says it had nothing to do with a statement issued to the media in its name and deriding academic Taj Hargey’s Open Mosque. […]

“The statement, which is purportedly endorsed by several Ulama formations, is another instance of impersonation and misrepresentation. The individual’s penchant for name-stealing and impersonating organisations borders on criminal action.” […]

So a fake website address & incorrect letterhead for an apparently fraudulent statement that the United Ulama Council says it never made. WTF?

Claiming to be “progressive” while you behave like a grifter is not the way to do this. Something is off here…

No, the good faith part. Bastard knew closing that beach off was in violation of the law. If I remember correctly, he was restricting people coming in from the sea as well.
