Watch Live: The Utterly Delusional Fanatics of the Values Voter Summit, Featuring Sarah Palin

Persecution complexes rampant
Wingnuts • Views: 27,118

Yes, it’s that time of the year again; the time when religious fanatics, creationists, fundamentalists, homophobic bigots and social conservatives with raging persecution complexes gather to share their psychoses at the right wing loonfest known as the Values Voter Summit.

Here’s a live feed from this insane event. As I write this, Kelly Shackelford is warning the audience that the government is turning into a totalitarian dictatorship that plans to strip them of religious freedom. It’s utterly delusional.

Coming up in the afternoon session:

AFTERNOON PLENARY SESSION - Regency Ballroom

Kelly Shackelford, President and CEO, Liberty Institute*

Senator Rick Santorum, Co-Founder, Patriot Voices*

Marriage in America: The Road Ahead Panel

Representative Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.)*

Dr. Jerry Johnson, President & CEO, National Religious Broadcasters*

Eric Teetsel, Executive Director, Manhattan Declaration*

Gary Bauer, President, American Values*

So Sarah who just got arrested in a brawl is going to lecture the American people on “values.” Oh this will be fun!

2 Bulworth  Sep 26, 2014 11:24:55am

Well I’m glad they invited Sarah because I think she was having trouble trying to fill the hours.

Let me guess: the bakery owners are there to whine about how they’re being forced to serve the gay agenda.

Pretty sure they have discovered how profitable it is to be on the RWNJ circuit.

The Values Voter Summit is the RWNJs Burning Man.

The Values Voter Summit is an American version of pro-Nazi nutjob rallies in Weimar Germany.

What do all the * after each person’s name mean? That they’re invited? Be funny for this panel to start and not have any of the invited panelists show up.

8 Feline Fearless Leader  Sep 26, 2014 11:29:14am

Isn’t Santorum close to being on the endangered speakers list? Haven’t seen his name much in comments so I figured he was possibly simply sitting at home licking his wounds.

Though I guess this is also possibly the kick-off for him getting into the 2016 GOP clown car.

Palin’s dad knocks up Palin’s mom, has to then marry her.

Palin gets knocked up with Track before marriage, has to get Todd to marry her.

Track gets arrested for vandalism, has to join military to stay out of jail. Returns, knocks up his girlfriend who he then has to marry. Divorces a couple of years later. Moves back in with the clan.

Bristol gets knocked up, doesn’t get married to father whose mother is a drug addict. Unemployed Bristol most recently attacked the host of a party her drunken family crashed.

My Nazarene minister brother has taken me to task for suggesting that ISIS and fanatical Christian fundies have a lot in common, even though he himself is a frequent critic of fundamentalist heresy and excess. He points out, quite correctly, that homegrown creationists, dominionists and other kooks are not out beheading people. My response is that their rhetoric makes it obvious that they would be chopping heads and burning people at the stake if they didn’t know that the long arm of the law would squash them like bugs for trying it.
Besides, that arm remains strong but it is getting wobbly around the edges, with dominionist and sovereign citizen sheriffs, law enforcement officials who have lent their names to nutburger ISIS infiltration claims, and the obvious racism of many police.

Thought that name sounded familiar. They sound like nice people. Really only in America does it feel like we actually feel the need to celebrate bigots like this and call them “courageous.” There’s nothing courageous or admirable about using religion as a crutch to hide your bigotry. Somehow I doubt the Kleins have refused to sell cakes to couples who have one of or both the two spouses remarrying or to someone who has worked on a Sunday. Using their religion as an excuse to deny service to that couple is a joke and always has been and I know it sounds mean but man I hope their bakery fails and they learn what they were doing was a form of Jim Crow style bigotry.

OT - I know most people know not to link to the Gatestone Institute since Fjordman, Robert Spencer, Bat Ye’or, Geert Wilders, etc. are among those listed on their Authors page, but here’s a heads-up anyway:

While Fjordman & Spencer haven’t contributed any articles in about 5 years, and Ye’or in around 3, Wilders is actively contributing—in fact, he has written 3 articles for them in the past 3 months.

You know what’s weird? There are an estimated 600,000-1,000,000 Muslims living in NYC—and that’s not even counting Jersey—yet there hasn’t been a single beheading in the tri-state area. I guess we’re not Real Muslims™, huh?

I’m thoroughly disgusted with all the bigotry and the *crickets* response from leaders of the GOP, so I’m gonna go occupy myself with something enjoyable instead of dwelling on this crap.

I’m sorry if you’re uncomfortable with the comment, but it is actually a salient point, and one not lost on the Right, that their demographic is predominantly middle aged and older white folks, and that they are NOT attracting younger or minority voters at a time when both groups are expanding while their demographic is, naturally, dying out.

No, I don’t think we CAN make this not about age. Sorry, but that’s how I see it, and I’m not a spring chicken myself.

That’s right, kids. Instead of razor wire and electric fences and armed guards who shoot to kill, we’ve got a border crossing that has no guards and a guy in a rowboat ready to take you across.

In all honesty, I’m hoping to get down to Big Bend next spring, and this is one of the trips I want to take. Ride a rowboat into Mexico. Ride a burro into town. Have a beer and a tamale in a restaurant that looks like it’s right out of a Sergio Leone film.

I hate it when Boomers are blamed for everything.

But look at the photo. You are not being blamed for the fact that old white people are the clear majority of people drawn to an event like this. The event’s promoters and participants are being blamed for the agenda which attracts those old white people.

As long as you are denouncing them, you are not one of them.

I know wrench. I’m just cautioning that some people not think age and whiteness makes you a tea drinking, stick in the mud, bigoted asswipe.

And there are cliches to fight. You know it is common for many to think that young people are always liberal and when they get some stuff and get older they grow-up, get smart and become conservatives.

I’m just saying Fuck All That!!!

I’m probably more liberal now than when I was in college. Even though I am from a historically union democrat background, I always claimed to be centrist. With these idiots growing more idiotic, they have driven me to being more democrat social liberal than ever before.

Expect some RWNJ herpty derp about this:

California Passes Bill Limiting Display of Confederate Flag

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill on Thursday that effectively bans state agencies from displaying or selling items bearing the Confederate flag.

The bill was introduced by an African-American assemblyman who contended that the flag is racist because it symbolizes the American southern states’ historical support for slavery. The bill was introduced after the state assemblyman, Isadore Hall, said his mother saw items at the Capitol Gift Shop in the state capital of Sacramento bearing the Confederate flag.

The bill passed 66-1, and the lone dissenter was a Republican who argued banning the flag would impede on First Amendment rights to free speech.

All indications are that California residents will still be allowed to use and display them privately, and will also be able to display them while protesting on state property.

The bill takes effect in January 2015.

And THIS, too.

Privilege can be gained and lost with appearance. Pass as white? Gained. Adopt a hijab? Lost. Dress in an Armani suit? Gained. Quit shaving and let clothes turn to rags? Lost.

Not everyone can drop that which loses them their privilege. Many would not want to. It’s a part of their identity, their most personal self.

Nor should one want to drop that which gives them their privilege. Frank says there’s a whole lot of times he wishes he weren’t white, but really it’s an expression of shame at what other white people are doing.

If you’re not participating in oppression, there’s no shame in sharing involuntary [edit: or voluntary] characteristics with the oppressors. But there’s nothing to be gained by saying ‘I’m white and I don’t do that’. Just call out your fellow white folks when they do that.

Yes, there is violence at the fringes of the US hard right. For now, the VVS types are keeping some (not enough, of course) distance between their views and the views of Stormfront and the ideology-driven cop killers.

As others here have said, the most dangerous time will be just after the US hard right is decisively defeated in enough elections that they lose their faith in being able to win elections.

One big difference is that the VVS crowd is part of the power structure here. They see themselves as losing that power, and they threaten violence if they lose more.

ISIS, OTOH, is NOT part of the power structure where they are, and indeed a number of their allies in Iraq are Sunnis who had apparently been shut out by the Maliki government.

People out of power, with no chance of getting into power without violence are prone to resort to it. People IN power who fear losing it may also be prone to violence, but weigh that urge against the potential of losing the battle and thus losing more power. If they feel pushed far enough, they will become violent.

Fifteen years ago, then-Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott found himself in hot water when it was revealed that he had addressed the racist Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) on at least five occasions.

U.S. Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia was also engulfed in the controversy, because he had given the keynote speech at the white supremacist group’s national convention in 1998.

Once the group’s racism became known, GOP Chair Jim Nicholson did the only responsible thing: He asked party members to resign from the CCC. Following his plea, senior members of Congress shunned the group. Both Lott and Barr said they had been unaware of the group’s racism.

Which leads us to today. If racism is anathema to the GOP, why isn’t overt anti-LGBT bigotry equally repellent?

Why do politicians like Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal still think it’s OK to speak to groups that vilify the LGBT community with outrageous propaganda and demonizing falsehoods?

All three are among the speakers at the Values Voter Summit that begins today in Washington.

[…]

Our letter asks a simple question: Will the GOP condemn anti-LGBT bigotry as vigorously as it opposed racism 15 years ago?”

From the downstairs discussion, apparently this is somehow distorting the past?

Yeah, I find it very entertaining that the Right thinks they want Reagan against ISIS - the guy who cut and ran from Beirut after 241 Marines were killed; the man who sold arms to Iran in exchange for hostages, then used the money to support death squads in defiance of Congress; the man who negotiated with our adversaries without precondition.

Someone want to clarify for me how this distorts the past? I’m lost.

RWC objects to my using the term ‘cut and ran’. Honestly, though, it’s a far more accurate description of Reagan’s retreat from Beirut than it is of Clinton’s withdrawal from Somalia, 6 months after Blackhawk Down.

I like using it for pretty much that reason.

And yet he has crickets when it comes to why the comparison is relevant especially in light of the right wing’s obsession with Benghazi.
