Another Mind-Bogglingly Dumb Post From GatewayPundit: “Unprotected Workers Cleaning Ebola Vomit!”

Incredibly stupid

DERP

The entire right wing noise machine is now in full-on panic-spreading mode about the single Ebola patient in Dallas, and of course, the idiots at Gateway Pundit are getting in on the fear-peddling too. Second Dumbest Man on the Internet Kristinn Taylor has an utterly ridiculous post today with the screaming headline: What Quarantine?… Photos Show MEN CLEANING TX EBOLA VOMIT Without SUITS! | the Gateway Pundit.

(They’ve already stealth-edited the post twice that I know of; see below.)

OK, folks. First of all, let’s just point out that these photos were taken today.

The man diagnosed with Ebola reportedly vomited on the ground outside his apartment last Sunday on his way to being admitted to the hospital in Dallas.

Do these idiots really believe that the vomit just sat there on the sidewalk for four days? The stupidity is mind-boggling. What these photos show are workers hosing down a sidewalk, like workers do every single day in every city in the United States. And even if there had been vomit there, the Ebola virus does not survive outside the body more than a few hours.

But even more ridiculous, they completely made up this “Ebola vomit” angle out of absolutely nothing. Here’s the tweet with the first photo they used:

Notice: not a single word about “vomit.” And in fact, why would there be? This was four days after the patient supposedly vomited.

And notice the caption for the second “Ebola vomit” photo:

A worker power washes the sidewalk in front of the apartment unit at The Ivy Apartments where a man diagnosed with the Ebola virus was staying in Dallas, Texas October 2, 2014. Up to 100 people may have had direct or indirect contact with the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, and four people have been quarantined in a Dallas apartment, health officials said on Thursday. (REUTERS/Mike Stone)

Again — not a single word about “vomit.” This isn’t jumping to conclusions, folks, it’s jumping into outer space. Complete fear-mongering nonsense, with no evidence whatsoever.

And about that stealth editing: in the original version of this post, Taylor said the image was from “PBS.” Why did he say this? Because the filename of the image started with pbs.twimg.com — and this is the URL for Twitter’s image filing system. It has nothing to do with PBS.

He also stealth-edited the description of the first photo, which originally claimed that an unprotected Red Cross worker was handing supplies to the quarantined family — when in fact the photo shows one of the quarantined family members bringing in supplies that were left at their door.

This is a first class self-beclowning effort from the dumbest site in the world. Keep up the good work, Kristinn Taylor!

These people really are retarded. I know it’s an insult but it’s the one word that sums up their dumbassery.

Oh and as for the interview, never happened. I received an email this morning saying it was cancelled with no explanation. The recruiter is contacting them to find out what happened.

I saw the postings and tweets earlier, and it’s completely par for the course. They have gone right off the rails with their paranoia and have left reality in the dust.

You cannot take anything posted there seriously. Every item has to be fact-checked and sourced, because odds are that everything about the narrative they’re serving up is wrong. They’re misleading on purpose.

Is it possible that someone who cleaned up the vomit five days ago may not have realized that this was actually someone who had Ebola? Yes. Could the person who cleaned this up five days ago have inadvertently exposed themselves to Ebola? Again, yes. Is that person someone who the public health authorities want to know about? Absolutely.

That’s why there are contact traces for everyone who could have come in contact.

You don’t want to increase risks to people so basic precautions should be taken - bleach solutions are known to kill the virus on surfaces. Sanitary practices are well established.

But Hoft and many of the right wingers are up to 11ty on the paranoia and risks that simply don’t pass the smell test - like a disease with known vectors suddenly becoming airborne, which goes against decades of experience.

It was a matter of time before Ebola struck urban areas, and again it was a matter of time before the disease was carried to Western urban centers (Europe is definitely at greater risk than the US due to the fact that there aren’t any direct flights between US and West Africa).

So, let’s dial down the hysteria and stick to what’s known.

And put Hoft and his co-bloggers on mute, because all they’re doing is inciting more hysteria and peddling nonsensical ravings at this point.

Years ago I worked with a guy who was prone to lying, exaggeration, and bullshitting. He was so well known for this that we developed a kind of parenthetical for any piece of news we’d heard, if it came only from him - ATA (According To Adelman), which meant ‘Apocryphal, if not an outright lie’.

What Rush Limbaugh Tells His Audience About “What Liberals Believe”:

“By definition, political correctness, competence cannot possibly be used because competence means better at it than somebody else or very good at it, and that is not permitted. We’re not to have these kinds of great differences. We’re not supposed to have people super-qualified, really, really good the things, because that humiliates those who aren’t as good, and we don’t want to hurt their feelings. So we put people who aren’t as good, aren’t as qualified in positions of authority to make them feel better, to show that we can be fair, to show that we understand equality and all this gunk, and it’s how you end up in situations such as those that we are finding ourselves in now.”

yes, that’s exactly what i think rush thank you so much

Yeah, when people realize that the Southwest through California are in the midst of a multi-decade drought and simply can’t sustain the population that has come to the region, all that supposed growth due to low taxes and GOP beliefs will come crashing down because the region will simply not have enough water for everyone and all the agriculture that was done in the middle of a desert.

One of my sisters (50-something) is an excellent tattoo artist, much in demand, and has been for many years. Her daughter (30-something) is even better in terms of artistry but is still apprenticing the tattooing skills. In the meantime, my niece is seriously into having her own body inked; major work that is technically and artistically really very good, even though it’s not my own artistic tastes. As long as she likes it, I have nothing to say.

I’m looking for a good tat artist…

College Board Tries To Placate Critics Over Unpatriotic AP History Claims

Classic newbie mistake — the Teahadists are aggressively projecting to push the Overton Window to the far right, as always. There’s no way they’ll ever see an AP History exam that’s not “leftist” unless it’s personally written by Ted Cruz and Coultergeist. By even attempting to placate them the GOP in the area is just going to get their true goal passed — to push the history exam further and further to the right.

I’ve actually noticed a large number of these popping up all fairly recently. Some thinktank must have realized that if they can’t outright kill Public Education through voucher program bullshit (yet, anyway, give them enough time and Public Schools will be considered as outdated as Unions in the US), the next best thing would be to poison the well by indoctrinating children with ultra-right bullshit. Expect to see Atlas Shrugged on mandatory reading lists soon, for example. This way they have a better chance of brainwashing kids into falling for their lies later on.

It’s just as dangerous, and done for the same reasons, as the “christ”-ians trying to force their delusions into the schools. Captive audiences, impressionable youth, etc etc.

More info here.

RBS

Density matters, yes.

I am not a physicist either but I do trust them to actually know what they are talking about. Hell, even Wikipedia can manage that much.

A perfect sphere of spherically uniform density (density varies solely with distance from centre) would produce a gravitational field of uniform magnitude at all points on its surface, always pointing directly towards the sphere’s centre. However, the Earth deviates slightly from this ideal, and there are consequently slight deviations in both the magnitude and direction of gravity across its surface. Furthermore, the net force exerted on an object due to the Earth, called “effective gravity” or “apparent gravity”, varies due to the presence of other factors, such as inertial response to the Earth’s rotation. A scale or plumb bob measures only this effective gravity.

Parameters affecting the apparent or actual strength of Earth’s gravity include latitude, altitude, and the local topography and geology.

Apparent gravity on the earth’s surface varies by around 0.7%, from 9.7639 m/s2 on the Nevado Huascarán mountain in Peru to 9.8337 m/s2 at the surface of the Arctic Ocean.[5] In large cities, it ranges from 9.766 in Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City, and Singapore to 9.825 in Oslo and Helsinki.

Specific gravity is not the same thing as gravity.

What the melting ice does is redistribute the mass of the Earth at the ice caps, which affects the local acceleration of gravity by a tiny amount. I doubt the average acceleration of gravity for the entire Earth has changed at all.

I’m going to take a flying guess on this one. Since ice is less dense then water, the ice melting increases the overall specific gravity of the earth. Have to imagine a very large number of “0”s after the decimal point

Of course, I could be as wrong as CCJ is on, well, everything.

RBS

It’s just a result of the decrease in the mass of the overburden on the dirt. As the ice melts and the weight decrease, the land rises. Simple.

I don’t even remember what it tasted like because it was soaked in harissa (hot sauce).

Remaining strictly kosher takes you pretty well out of the running for Really Weird Foods (no curried snake for you!).

Snails are about as weird as I’ve ever eaten (I’m not very adventurous as to food either) — once, to see what they’re like. I wouldn’t eat them again.

Turtle when I was younger (and they weren’t thought to be threatened). Incredibly delicious.

I’ve eaten tongue and heart, sweetbreads and all that, and never had a problem with them.

I was 20. My neighbor shot the bear in the middle of the night. He called me a 5 in the morning, said he needed help, he shot a bear!

I arrived at about 6:30 and there was my neighbor, by himself, starting the field dress. It was only the second time I was directly involved in a field dressing of big game. I got out my knife and got to work.

It was just a few minutes into it and my neighbor handed me a piece of meat the size of a piece of Bubblicious gum. “Eat it!” I did. “What is it?” “It’s his tongue! You better fucking swallow that dude!”

That’s a morning I’ll never forget.

Cow tongue (cooked thankfully). My friend grew up thinking it was pork tenderloin, until he had pork tenderloin at a friend’s house. He offered me a sandwich of it. He wouldn’t tell me what it was till I ate it. It was quite good, and I would not have eaten it if I knew what it was.

I’ve had cow tongue, which is disgusting.

I grew up eating menudo, which….well. It’s an acquired taste. Some of it’s good, some of it is horrifying.

One of my favorite foods since I was a kid is barbacoa. Traditional Mexican barbacoa can be made out of beef heads or lamb, but most places that I’ve had it at use cabrito, which is goat meat.

I tried rillettes when I was in France and liked it. I also developed a taste for escargot. I’ll still have it once in a while.

I also like vegemite. Yes, really.

I have an old cookbook, “Cooking with the Indian Masters” where the recipes were selected by and commented on by the chefs who ran the kitchens in the biggest, most luxurious hotels at the time.

There is a cold plate/salad section, and the chef—who had enormous prestige and European chef’s training—says, straight up, in the intro: washed but not cooked veg in India will mess you up, and therefore my specialty is rarely appreciated.

I kinda like tongue, but the sea cucumber was pretty weird.

Sea cucumbers are echinoderms from the class Holothuroidea. They are marine animals with a leathery skin and an elongated body containing a single, branched gonad.
……
A remarkable feature of these animals is the “catch” collagen that forms their body wall. This can be loosened and tightened at will, and if the animal wants to squeeze through a small gap, it can essentially liquefy its body and pour into the space.

I believe it. Chinese cuisine is closely aligned with traditional Chinese medicine. Some foods should only eaten at certain times of the day or year, and some are “prescribed” for certain groups of people: children, seniors, pregnant moms, etc. One friend told me that Chinese consider cold food unhealthy (and cold water, too), so everything is cooked (or pickled) and served hot. Drinking cold drinks, other than baijiu, at dinner is also frowned upon.

Western food habits are changing those customs, though. The Chinese like soft drinks and ice cream now.

I have an old, old Joy of Cooking. In the Game chapter it gives not only recipes but how to dress the animal after you kill it. Who knew so many many animals had scent glands that will ruin the meat? The list of edibles include rabbits and hares, squirrels, opossum, porcupine (seriously?), raccoon, muskrat, woodchuck, beaver (also beaver tail), armadillo (aka ‘possum on the half-shell), venison, bear, peccary, and boar.

I’ve had about two-thirds of those in various Critter Crawls when I lived in Louisiana, A Cajun will eat anything once, and most things become staples.

245 wheat-dogghazi  Oct 2, 2014 8:09:46pm

A couple of you have mentioned thousand-year-old (or hundred-year-old) eggs, also translated as preserved eggs. They’re served in China, too. The process involves taking raw eggs, covering them with a very alkaline coating, and waiting several days for chemistry to do its work.
en.wikipedia.org

Some of them can be quite tasty, once you get past the jelly-like texture of the eggs, but most of them are just plain horrible, with a heavy chemical taste. As with anything, the more you pay for them, the better the quality.

Eggs boiled in brine and eggs boiled in tea are variations, but technically not preserved eggs.

Pittsburgh bars were required to have food service. They satisfied that with the pickled (beet juice) eggs, pickled kielbasa chunks, and tiny racks of Heinz soups. Never saw any of it eaten.

Fact or Fiction?: The Ebola Virus Will Go Airborne

“…interviews with several infectious diseases experts reveal that whereas such a mutation—or more likely series of mutations—might physically be possible, it’s highly unlikely. In fact, there’s almost no historical precedent for any virus to change its basic mode of transmission so radically. “We have so many problems with Ebola, let’s not make another one that, of course, is theoretically possible but is pretty way down on the list of likely issues,” says infectious diseases expert William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University.”

Fact or Fiction?: The Ebola Virus Will Go Airborne

This article, which is perfectly clear to rational people, will be used by the RWNJs as further evidence that it could go airborne. On the other hand, I completely get why scientists are unwilling to use any stronger language - because that would be wrong.

There is a very real language divide between scientists and the rest of the world, and I don’t know if there is a good solution for it.

2 October 1952: The Boeing XB-52 Stratofortress prototype, 49-230, made its first flight at Boeing Field, Seattle, Washington, with test pilot Alvin M. “Tex” Johnston in command.

The first of two prototype strategic bombers, the XB-52 had been damaged during ground testing and extensive repairs were required, delaying its initial flight. The pre-production aircraft, YB-52 49-231, made the type’s first flight, 15 April 1952.

The B-52 prototypes had tandem seating for the pilot and co-pilot, much like the smaller B-47. Production models switched to a more conventional side-by-side flight deck arrangement.

Nine years later, the last B-52, an H model, was delivered to the Air Force. I flew it. Those H models, built in and delivered to the Air Force in 1960 and 1961, are still flying today. In fact, they are still our best strategic iron bombers. Go figure. A sixty year old design is more suited to modern warfare than either of the more “modern” B-1s or B-2s.

Great airplane.

Blocking businesses is not going to help the protesters, so I hope they fall back enough to let local business owners get back to work after the National Holiday.

There’s also the possibility that the counter-protesters are in fact agents of the government sent out to provoke confrontations, so that the cops can be called in to arrest people.

All together now:

Youtube Video

Or, if you want to take it more rationally, the fact is that you can’t get Ebola unless you’ve come into contact with someone who has active symptoms. And taking advil or tylenol isn’t going to mask all of the other symptoms (which can mimic many other diseases - so the key is proximity to someone who has active symptoms). So, the screening and questions asked before leaving the country are paramount.

But as we’ve seen, people aren’t always honest - and the Texas patient didn’t divulge that he was in contact with an Ebola-infected person before leaving Liberia, so further questions/steps must be taken besides simply screening for temperature, though that appears to be the easiest way to screen.

It might be a good idea to set up a quarantine area for people waiting to leave the affected countries so that they don’t show signs of disease before leaving. Even a 24-hour period of monitoring at a secured area at the airport might weed out those who are trying to hide their symptoms. This isn’t ideal, but given the possibility that someone might board flights out of the region, take connecting flights and reach far flung parts of the world that aren’t able to handle an outbreak, it is something that has to be considered.

Hard to say. The earliest US case was in ‘69, and the only way they know that is because the autopsy results were so weird that blood and tissue samples were preserved into the 80s. The patient said he’d been suffering symptoms since ‘66 and hadn’t traveled out of the US or been to any of the major cities later identified as hot zones.

I gather most of the Air Force loathes the A10 mostly because being a pilot is either about throwing your aircraft around the sky and killing the other side’s pilots, or dropping bombs on ‘infrastructure’ from invisible aircraft. Close ground support, which in my opinion is one of the most useful thing aircraft can do, is beneath them, is one of those thing just not done.

So it’s not surprising the Air Force killed the A10.

There’s that, but it’s also a problem of the A-10 being a specialized aircraft in a service that’s big on multirole aircraft. And all the qualities that make it tough as nails also make it a bitch to maintain. They’ve tried again and again to retire it, but every time a war breaks out and they have to put it off for a few more years.

It is the content of the story. He started the story that a red cross worker delivered food and went in and out of the apartment without protective gear. Before he finally partially corrected his wild ass guess twitchy took it and ran with it.

The red cross piled food outside the door and left, the guy carrying the food in is one of the family members. Which anyone with half a brain should have assumed to start with.

Bogus Congressman Said to Get Backstage at Obama Event

An unidentified man posing as a member of Congress made it into a secure area backstage at President Barack Obama’s appearance at a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation awards dinner in Washington Sept. 27, according to a White House official.

The man entered the backstage area during or just after Obama’s speech at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center as members of Congress gathered there to have their pictures taken with the president, said the official, who asked for anonymity to discuss the incident, which has not previously been made public.

The unidentified man said he was Representative Donald Payne Jr., a Democrat from New Jersey, the official said. One member of the White House staff determined that the man wasn’t Payne, and another asked him to leave, the official said. He did so without incident and wasn’t detained.

re:

Yeah, that’s the sequence I followed, although I didn’t get through Meyer’s book. Be interested in what you think of it.

I’m two chapters in. It’s very readable, though not with the fluidity of Tuchman’s prose. Meyer assigns less of the blame to the Germans for the start of the war than Tuchman. His analysis is that Germany wanted to stave off a European war by counseling Austria-Hungary not to invade Serbia, but did so in a weak and confusing manner, which encouraged the Austrians to go ahead with their plans. He agrees with Tuchman that Germany’s mobilization plan required an invasion of France, and that there was no other plan available. So, when Russia pre-mobilized troops near the German border and Austria started its war with Serbia, Germany put its mobilization plans into effect.

Tuchman, on the other hand, paints a picture of an intractably militant Germany hell-bent on taking over Europe. She argues that the Austrian-Serbian war provided the pretext for Germany’s march toward France.

Last time I was at Whole Foods I looked at their vegan “dairy” section thinking that maybe I could enjoy a kosher “cheeseburger”

Vegan processed chemical manufactured fake “cheez” certainly qualifies as “weird & exotic” but I don’t think you could call it “food”

I thought vegans were all into natural foods but I guess not.

I think Quorn would count, Fake meat made from a kind of soil mold.

That said, some of the “natural” stuff is pretty crazy. I love tempeh, but it’s very hard to describe in a not-offputting way. Partly-cooked grain on which a fungus is allowed to grow?

Possibly one of the strangest foods that I’ve never eaten: Hakari

Hákarl is traditionally prepared by gutting and beheading a Greenland or basking shark and placing it in a shallow hole dug in gravelly sand, with the now cleaned cavity resting on a small mound of sand. The shark is then covered with sand and gravel, and stones are placed on top of the sand in order to press the shark. In this way the fluids are pressed out of the body. The shark ferments in this fashion for 6-12 weeks depending on the season.

Following this curing period, the shark is then cut into strips and hung to dry for several months. During this drying period a brown crust will develop, which is removed prior to cutting the shark into small pieces and serving. The modern method is just to press the shark’s meat in a large drained plastic container.[5]

Edit: I say this, because I sometimes wonder about the Icelander who said “Hey, I’ve got an idea …” on this one.

Fermented meat—anywhere in the world, at any time—is always disturbing. Most examples come from the Arctic Circle. Apparently the fermenting frees up nutrients, including vitamins, that compensate for the lack of greens.

Also, kiviak—whole seabirds fermented by being stuffed inside a hollowed-out seal, then buried—exists. I’ve seen video of it being “made”—BBC’s “Human Planet”—and…nope.

Raw seal actually freaks me out less than fermented meat products. I mean, I eat stuff like tartare and carpaccio; it’s a leap, but not a vast one.

Interestingly, eating raw seal—specifically the liver— is another way of getting key nutrients usually supplied in one’s diet, in particular Vitamin C. Arctic peoples were very clever at finding ways to survive in an insanely hostile environment.

I’ve been relatively pleased with Target’s service near me.

I’m really happy though with the service at a new grocer in town, Wegman’s, compared to my usual experience at the other grocery store, Giant.

At Wegman’s, they actually staff the checkout counters with alert people who get you through pretty quick.

At Giant, they’d rather not staff the checkout counters at all, preferring you go through the self-check out. And if they have to staff the checkout counters they get staff who are pretty slow and there are always problems with someone’s purchase to guarantee your stay in the checkout line will be long and unpleasant.

I was beginning to dread any trip to Giant, even for one thing, knowing I could be there indefinitely.

And the Wegman’s selection is really good, too.

This has been your daily advertisement for Wegman’s, which may or may not operate in your area.

What pissed me off at Target was that I was in there to buy one item, I got to a checkout and they were hawking their Target rewards card and the person in front decided to sign up for it (Sidebar: What idiot would give Target their checking or banking account information to sync with their rewards card?), and I was told this would take several minutes and I could go to their “food bar” (or whatever it’s called) and be rang up there and there was no line. I go to the “food bar” counter, and guess what? There’s absolutely no one there. I wait 30 seconds, drop the stuff on the counter, and walk out at that point.

What idiot at Target decided that they were going to hawk their stupid ass rewards card system by making anyone who wanted to sign up for it block a whole check out counter for several minutes?

According to The Consumerist, the mom in question was having a meal with her 16-month-old daughter when the tot needed a diaper change. However, when the mom found that the establishment — the store was in the Midwest, the outlet states — didn’t have a changing table, she changed her child’s diaper on a table in the dining area.

Shark, as well as skate, ray and other “fish” in that family can contain a lot of ammonia especially after being caught/the fight to catch one. So to me they came up with a way to get the ammonia and other oils/acids out of it before curing it and consuming it.

For example bat ray is supposed to taste like scallop but if you do not get it on ice and clean/prepare it properly there will be a heavy ammonia taste and it is inedible.

One of the really interesting things about vegan/vegetarianism (which I’m not) is the debate over “meat-like” tastes. There are all kinds of recipes which try to mimic the taste of meat with vegetable substitutes. I don’t have a dog in that hunt (pun intended) but I do know that I have a vegetarian chili recipe that I would take over the regular chili if push came to shove.

The last time I got a ‘Greek salad’ in this town, I was sorely disappointed. There’s another place doing them now. If I’m feeling brave later, I might give them a shot.

Meanwhile, this particular doctor is making the rounds claiming that 1) the CDC is lying about the Ebola outbreak; and 2) Ebola will spread to all corners of the 3d world and decimate it.

Dr. Gil Mobley. It’s reported that he’s a microbiologist out of Missouri, and he’s taken to dressing up in hazmat gear to get his point across.

“For months, doctors in my community — since we had a meeting six weeks ago — have been convinced that the United States will be importing clusters regularly. Right now, on the continent of West Africa, there are a million people in isolation, in quarantine, because of Ebola, and ten thousand passengers leave West Africa every single day. It’s just a matter of time before this disease is carried to every corner of the world.”
He insists the CDC is underplaying the threat posed by the disease and is intentionally misleading the public.

“They said the chance of importing a cluster — just two weeks ago — was extremely small, yet we knew that it was a sure thing. And the very same day that the President echoed [Director Tom] Frieden’s sentiment at the CDC that it’s very small, that very same day, they made the misdiagnoses in Dallas and sent this infectious guy home to infect these other people.”
Mobley said it is inevitable that an Ebola crisis will break out in the United States.

“That disease is going to consume every third world country on the planet, and then we will be importing these clusters on a regular basis. I have no question that we will be able to stomp out this cluster in Dallas, but what happens when it happens on a weekly basis?

Texas isn’t able to handle the outbreak on its own, but they’re somehow going to be better off than the US? There are other reasons the CDC could be sending people to Dallas - namely to improve safety and handling techniques.

How charming. Especially as I can’t imagine what border security has to do with people with passports flying into airports across the country in broad daylight.

546 ausador  Oct 3, 2014 9:55:35am

I had a guy on twitter earlier talking about how the CDC had to have started this epidemic of Ebola in Africa since they held the patent on it. I just wrote it off as completely nuts and ignored him.

Turns out the CDC does hold a patent for Ebola Bundibugyo (EboBun) since they were the first to extract and isolate the virus of that strain.
google.com

Just a heads up in case someone else here runs into these conspiracy nutters. One small problem with their little theory, this outbreak isn’t Ebola Bundibugyo it is Ebola Zaire.

PS: Apparently the old naming system is dead, so properly it is the Bundibugyo virus, Sudan virus, Taï Forest virus, or Ebola virus (formerly Zaire).

The ugly history of the Democrat Party part seven

Yes, Dems, you must wear the Mexican-robbing, slave-owning James Knox Polk (1845-49) around your necks like an ideological albatross forever. Note that this is part SEVEN and the author has only worked his way up to Polk.

This enterprise is likely to collapse in a tsunami of cognitive dissonance when he reaches the Civil War, since many freepers regard Confederate Democrats like Jeff Davis as stainless heroes and martyrs of resistance to federal overreach.

Tu quoque response: I have yet to see any prominent GOP leaders answer for the notorious Republican cannibal Alferd Packer, whose depredations were much more recent than Polk’s.

One thing the wingnuts don’t understand about history, the 1860 election was a four-way.
Northern Democrats: nominated Stephen Douglas, won Missouri
Southern Democrats: nominated John Breckenridge, won the deep South
Constitutional Union: nominated John Bell, won the upper South (Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee)
Republicans: nominated Abraham Lincoln, won the election

My limited experience (IV Corps, NSAD, Binh Thuy, RVN with CTF 116) in calling upon USAF close air support is that, at that time and place, you never called on the AF for CAS. Maybe not their fault: they were flying heavily loaded F-105s on missions for which they had not been adequately trained. The AF pilots flew too fast and too high to accurately deliver their payloads with the result that the shit just went everywhere.
