Every Suspected #Ebola Case in the News Has Now Been Cleared: DC, Maryland, Honolulu, Newark, Toronto All Negative

There’s some good news on the Ebola front today; first, the patient in Washington DC’s Howard University Hospital who was admitted with Ebola-like symptoms does not have the disease.

And another patient in Maryland has also tested negative for Ebola:

Meanwhile, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Maryland, said a patient that had been tested for possible Ebola does not have the disease.

A statement from the hospital:

“Following further tests, monitoring and consultations with infectious disease experts, our medical team has determined that the patient in our care has malaria and does not have Ebola. We appreciate the excellent work of our clinical team including physicians, nurses and staff, in handling the care of this patient. We also appreciate the partnership of county, state and federal agencies on this case.”

Meanwhile, in Dallas where the only confirmed Ebola patient so far is hospitalized, the 10 people who had closest contact with him have showed no signs of developing the disease.

Dallas (CNN) — About 10 people are at “higher risk” of catching Ebola after coming into contact with a Liberian man hospitalized in Dallas but have showed no symptoms, health officials said Saturday.

The group is among 50 people being monitored daily, but the other 40 are considered “low risk,” said Dr. David Lakey, the commissioner of Texas department of state health services.

The nine people who had definite contact with the Ebola patient — including family members and health care professionals — have been monitored and show no symptoms or fevers, Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Saturday.

“We have already gotten well over 100 inquiries of possible patients,” Frieden told reporters. “We’ve assessed every one of those … and just this one patient has tested positive … We expect that we will see more rumors or concerns or possibilities of cases, until there is a positive laboratory test, that is what they are.”

UPDATE at 10/4/14 11:39:49 am by Charles Johnson

Another patient in Honolulu, Hawaii, has also been detemined not to have Ebola.

HONOLULU —The Hawaii State Department of Health has determined that the individual in isolation at a Honolulu hospital who was reported to the department as a possible Ebola case on Wednesday does not meet the criteria for testing. The individual is no longer under evaluation for possible Ebola infection.

The guy in Cobb County GA who claimed he had been exposed in Nigeria was cleared last night too. Didn’t stop a freak out locally, but at least it wasn’t anywhere near a worst case scenario.

While Ebola is certainly not something to fuck with, the threat of it is seriously overblown. If you can get medical care when the early symptoms show up and you’re generally healthy otherwise, you’ve got at least even odds of coming out the other side in good shape and an interesting story to tell.

Then again, if you’re in Texas and poor, you’re probably SOL.

Were the usual suspects this freaked out over SARS? What about the current enterovirus outbreak? That’s killed at least 2 kids so far(maybe more, I haven’t checked in the last few days). Frankly the enterovirus scares me more than Ebola does. It has a paralyzing effect in some of the children, similar to polio, which is in the same virus family. And yet I don’t hear any of my pet wingnuts losing their collective shit over that. Nope. Just Ebola. I’m trying to put my finger on why….hmm…what could it be do you think?….

It’s another health scare, same as happens every year. Almost always at the beginning of flu season and generally always with roots in backwoods communities in a foreign locale whose poor healthcare means high fatality rates that make for good print but shitty predictions.

You’re right, of course, but that kinda misses the point: by the standards of modern medicine, “at least even odds” is a fairly crappy survival standard. And that is WITH decent medical care: even cutting-edge med tech like we have access to in the US can’t, apparently, boost the basic survival rate much.

But, yeah: if you’re poor (and not just in Texas) …? Pray.

We’re likely to keep hearing “potential case” for awhile, because hospitals will be on the look out now for people showing “flu-like symptoms” and the media will spend at least the next week screaming at their viewers that feeling the least bit sick is cause for going to the hospital to get tested for Ebola.

It is better than many past outbreaks, which were usually isolated to tiny hamlets, where the rate was 90% or higher. The rate is 50% now in Africa primarily because of the increased vigilance as well as the disease moving into larger areas with better equipped facilities. Plus the survival rate is greatly improved by early detection and care, as the biggest complication for infected patients is dehydration due to the vomiting, diarrhea, and internal bleeding.

BUT PRESSURE WASHERS!!11!! STORM DRAINS!!11!!! EBOLA BLANKETS!!11!! POROUS OPEN BORDERS!!11!!! BENGHAZI!!11!!

You guys said “BENGHAZI!” and “guns” so, that means its time for this week’s article about Libya. The topic is Gun Repair:

In a militia-controlled garage in Misrata, Libya, workers service and refurbish weapons for fighters from different Misrata brigades. Free services provided range from fixing and servicing small arms and light weapons (SALW) to mounting multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS), anti-aircraft guns, and various machine guns on militia vehicles.

A woodworking area within the garage produces furniture for various SALW. For PKT and PKMT machine guns, for example, wooden butt-stocks, grips, fore ends, and makeshift triggers are produced. These weapons, removed from tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, are typically solenoid-operated, and lack a hand-held firing mechanism.

With damaged weapons provided to the workshop by the Misrata fighters, a variety of craft-produced components are made, enabling weapons to be reissued. The PKMT has been particularly prolific recently due to clashes with rival Zintan militias in Tripoli, resulting in many such recovered items. An estimated 600 PKT and PKMT machine guns have been converted by the workshop in August alone. Belt-fed machine guns are favoured amongst the Libyan fighters, and their relative scarcity makes this recovery and conversion attractive.

Note that writer, Hassan Morajea, writes in British English. Hence he writes “favoured” instead of “favored”. The post isn’t “gun porn” but is factual look at the repair of small arms in a conflict zone.

No, Ebola’s got a 15-20% chance of killing you regardless of treatment quality, unless you get on the experimental drugs for it. It’s a good deal more lethal than SARS, and while we shouldn’t panic, it is reasonable to be afraid of Ebola.

The average EVD case fatality rate is around 50%. Case fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks.

Whole thing

Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans.
The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.
The average EVD case fatality rate is around 50%. Case fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks.
The first EVD outbreaks occurred in remote villages in Central Africa, near tropical rainforests, but the most recent outbreak in west Africa has involved major urban as well as rural areas.
Community engagement is key to successfully controlling outbreaks. Good outbreak control relies on applying a package of interventions, namely case management, surveillance and contact tracing, a good laboratory service, safe burials and social mobilisation.
Early supportive care with rehydration, symptomatic treatment improves survival. There is as yet no licensed treatment proven to neutralise the virus but a range of blood, immunological and drug therapies are under development.
There are currently no licensed Ebola vaccines but 2 potential candidates are undergoing evaluation.

I just saw a report where Thomas Duncan, the Dallas Ebola patient, has now been listed as being in critical condition a move up from serious condition previously.

I hope he makes it, as that would help the overall thinking of the disease.

I also wonder if the U.S. based healthcare and treatments could have gotten him stronger quicker those extra days he missed being hospitalized had not occurred. It seems if they can get on it early enough and really help strengthen the immune system by taking on the early symptoms you have greater chances.

Regardless of treatment quality?

70 calochortus  Oct 4, 2014 12:35:24pm

Just a drive-by as I need to leave shortly, but apparently in some areas of Africa 10-15% of the population has antibodies to Ebola in their blood. This indicates they had it and survived. They never made it to hospitals, so aren’t in the statistics.
It may mean that the virus is less virulent under certain circumstances, but it’s hard to say.

I think one of the questions is what will that percentage be with the cases in America and other better health care areas of the world?

Is the 50% figure not based on the African cases, or maybe all cases worldwide?

RWNJs report that the millions could die (“COULD” being a weasel word), that we don’t have any one source to handle coordinate it (Thought that was the job of the CDC, and the Surgeon General if you let one get confirmed).

Who should I trust, the knowledgeable people on scene, or the pandering RW pundits. Tough decision….. but I have to go with people who actually have a freaking clue what they are talking about.

Really? This is a realistic assertion he made?

Regardless of treatment quality?

So witch doctor treatment, evangelical prayer will cure what ails you, or top quality educated medical treatment…it’s all the same?

ETA: I also meant to include third world medical facilities, like in Liberia, in that…

You are taking that to an absurd extreme. Yeah, rolling into ER in a modern facility you still face a very significant fatality rate. It’s higher with poorer treatment of course. But early treatment is not something that comes anywhere close to guaranteeing survival. especially for those not in prime health or of a prime of youth age. That’s enough to be scared of the disease. I’m scared of lots of diseases. Not all are close, nor does it do anything to me but maybe sharpen some hygiene habits.

re: #68 ObserverArt

I just saw a report where Thomas Duncan, the Dallas Ebola patient, has now been listed as being in critical condition a move up from serious condition previously.

I hope he makes it, as that would help the overall thinking of the disease.

I also wonder if the U.S. based healthcare and treatments could have gotten him stronger quicker those extra days he missed being hospitalized had not occurred. It seems if they can get on it early enough and really help strengthen the immune system by taking on the early symptoms you have greater chances.

I can’t seem to find anything about his condition. All three of the medical personnel who were flown back to the US survived, much to their surprise. I think they all got the experimental new therapy, but am not sure about that either.

It does sound like Dallas dropped the ball on this one, though; they should have hospitalized the patient sooner.

When we had big influenza H1N1 outbreak a few years back, we took no chances with at risk individuals; pregnant women, for instance, were treated as though they had the disease if they had the symptoms, even if the test came back negative (because of risk of false negative).

No, I’m not taking it to an absurd extreme. DF is the one who asserted that

You’re not being absurd, just observant. No doubt that estimate comes from Africa, not “first world” countries.

After all, no one has died in the US from it yet, and even Mr. Duncan came from Liberia and had been around it.

Haven’t seen any cases reported by any European countries or GB, either.

From an article in Forbes about Emory’s experience with Ebola:

The evidence from Emory shows Ebola can be beaten. And according to Dr. Bruce Ribner, who runs Emory’s infectious disease unit, there’s reason to think that with the right approach, Ebola can even be beaten most of the time.

“We would anticipate that … most patients, if they have not had any substantial organ damage, will make a full recovery,” Ribner said at a press conference in late August.

Ribner said that it’s important for doctors and nurses to focus on replacing potassium, calcium and other electrolytes in Ebola patients who are rapidly losing fluids.

“One guidance we are giving back to our colleagues is that they need to pay attention to replacing these electrolytes,” he said. “Even if they’re unable to do the same tests [as Emory did], there are things they can do to try to improve outcomes.”

For example, it’s still unclear if ZMapp, or if the care at Emory — which was significantly more comprehensive than what was available in Africa — was the prime reason the two Emory patients recovered.

The woman wasn’t admitted to the hospital, she was sent back home and died there later. Strictly speaking, and admittedly this is pedantic, Duncan couldn’t have known for certain that she had Ebola, since the hospital didn’t admit her or test her for it. I’m also not sure if he knew that she died.

In any event, he did know she was seriously sick and he should have mentioned that both in the Liberian exit interview and at the initial hospital visit in Dallas. That has sadly been one of this country’s biggest mistakes about medicines. Too many people get sick with a virus and go and cry to their doctors and the doctors cave and give them antibiotics. Thus fucking up how well antibiotics work for them and everyone else later.

But then, making money instead of practicing good medicine has long been a problem.

Public health measures (e.g. vaccines) always cheaper and more effective in the long run than treating diseases as they occur. And that is why we need to spend public funds for basic medical research. The private sector just isn’t interested, unless there is a potential big windfall in it for them. 148 Backwoods_Sleuth  Oct 4, 2014 2:01:31pm

Oh my…

While trying to find the CCJ Asian girlfriend thing, I ran across this:

Asians, the ‘New Jews’ of Academia

Last month the Anti-Defamation League filed an amicus curiae brief defending racial preferences at the University of Texas ahead of an upcoming Supreme Court decision. In so doing, the nation’s most prominent Jewish civil liberties group has shamefully betrayed its longstanding commitment to equal treatment for all. It has also ignored the very long tradition of discrimination in academia against the “new Jews,” Asian-Americans.

Meanwhile, the brief against the university filed by four groups—among them three Asian-American advocacy organizations—cites the history of Jewish exclusion at the nation’s top schools in an appeal to end current race-based admission practices. “Every facet of the discrimination that Asian-Americans face today in college admissions has been reflected in the Jewish experience,” says Israeli-born Alan Gura, the brief’s author. Kenneth Marcus, president of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, which signed onto the brief, agrees. “It wasn’t right for the elite colleges to limit Jewish students then, it’s still not right to limit Asian-American students now.”

And there is sooo much more derpes at the link.

No, I’m not taking it to an absurd extreme. DF is the one who asserted that

Why am I the one being absurd for calling that out?

I read that as even in the best care it has that chance of killing you. I don’t see much contrary to that. Of course none of that counts for those merely thought to have been exposed and actually not. Here is what I found absurd. And again, yeah an 85% chance to make it seems to be a slightly optimistic view.

So witch doctor treatment, evangelical prayer will cure what ails you, or top quality educated medical treatment…it’s all the same?

What the College Accused Me Of — Or, Why I Haven’t Been Blogging
By Charles Johnson at 8:13 AM

Now that I have graduated it is time to explain to my readers why it is that I have been incommunicado these past days.

My cheating, lying ex-girlfriend, Tina Nguyen (Thien-Nga Nguyen) CMC ‘11, was apparently very upset with my blog post describing her as a cheating, lying ex-girlfriend who was making stuff about me and sending it to my admirers on Twitter.

Tina then made up a frivolous complaint against me saying that I had “harassed” and “defamed” her and brought in the Dean of Students. There was only one problem: I had, in her own writing, emails and chats that showed she had cheated and lied.

I read it that way too. DF expressed it inartfully and ambiguously, and it would be good to see some actual science, but it’s not unreasonable to believe that with the best possible treatment, Ebola will still kill up to one fifth of it’s victims.

I doubt very much that he was arguing treatment with colloidal silver and crystal auras would result in such a low fatality rate.

If your local laws are the same as most places, LL must provide a working furnace if the apt was represented as having a unit to provide a heat source.

So, I’d say you are on safe ground there, legally.

I had a couple of customers in here earlier who hadn’t seen each other in a while. They started catching with each other’s hunting exploits. Both of them talked about setting up cameras in likely spots or known favorites. One of them was set up by a lake before rainy season. After rainy season, the camera was just above the water, and every day it snapped a pic of a bear’s head swimming by. Once it was followed by two cubs. Almost sounded fun enough to me to skip the actual hunting and killing part, but not to these guys. Bow and arrow, muzzle loaders, rifles, friends, sons, bear, deer, turkey, squirrel; they kept talking and I kept listening instead of fixing bikes. Back to it.

There’s more than a little resemblance to how the hate right is pushing Ebola fear now to how they pushed HIV fear a couple of decades ago (and see Brian Fischer’s tweet from the other day for an explicit connection.)

Speaking of HIV, this paper published yesterday is getting some coverage worldwide:

The early spread and epidemic ignition of HIV-1 in human populations

Thirty years after the discovery of HIV-1, the early transmission, dissemination, and establishment of the virus in human populations remain unclear. Using statistical approaches applied to HIV-1 sequence data from central Africa, we show that from the 1920s Kinshasa (in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo) was the focus of early transmission and the source of pre-1960 pandemic viruses elsewhere. Location and dating estimates were validated using the earliest HIV-1 archival sample, also from Kinshasa. The epidemic histories of HIV-1 group M and nonpandemic group O were similar until ~1960, after which group M underwent an epidemiological transition and outpaced regional population growth. Our results reconstruct the early dynamics of HIV-1 and emphasize the role of social changes and transport networks in the establishment of this virus in human populations.

BAN ALL FLIGHTS FROM LIBERIA!

QUARANTINE EVERYBODY!

And of course, anyone who tells them to calm down is just parroting the Democrat line because Obama and midterms and eleventy herp derp.

My friend on Facebook (posted about her yesterday) has gone completely off the rails. Five posts in a row, how she doesn’t believe that the people who were cleared don’t have the disease, demanding travelers from West Africa be banned from coming here, still jabbering about how the Dallas guy could have sweated on someone or sneezed and left Ebola snot on a handrail, on and on and on.

I’m not even going to bother with trying to calm her down. She clearly does not want to hear a sensible argument. It sucks.

Dali was interesting in many ways, but honestly if I put up a print of a painter these days it’d probably be a Vermeer. “Woman with a Lute”, “Girl with a pearl earring” or “The Love Letter” come to mind but really any of his window lit paintings. His use of light appeals to me as a photographer in ways few others (sometimes Rembrandt or Andrew Wyeth) can manage.

358 lawhawk  Oct 4, 2014 5:48:54pm

So, what’d I miss since yesterday? A bunch of false-alarms on Ebola? You don’t say.

You mean the 90 plus alarms raised before the Dallas confirmed case doesn’t ring a bell? Now that everyone is looking for possible exposures when anyone appears to show symptoms that are indicators of pretty much the spectrum from food poisoning to the flu, and you’re going to get a whole lot of false alarms.

Because there are a whole lot more cases of food poisoning (unrecognized as such in most cases since they’re mild) to influenza (which is even more communicable than Ebola, and can have deadly outcomes).

If anything Ebola might get people to consider personal hygiene and washing hands more frequently, and for common carriers to commit to more cleaning of their vehicles as well - for fear of lawsuit as a result of exposure to any number of other diseases besides Ebola (though it’s wishful thinking to believe that they’ll do anything that might cost them more in the short term).

He/She/It is really intellectually underpowered.

Not too many cats were inconvenienced in the making of Halseman’s portrait of Dali.

Someone once posted a ‘making of’ page for that portrait, complete with out-takes (when they threw the kittens too early) and showing the wires attached to the various props. Pretty cool.

Winslow Homer, not too shabby. heh.

My friend’s Great Grandfather is the boy in the dark hat. There’s a postage stamp as well. Damn cool.

I just watched the Bill Maher-Ben Affleck-Sam Harris-Michael Steele-Nicholas Kristof video. Fortunately, the ibuprofen bottle is nearby.

Pop Photo did an article in the early 60s, might be online now.

How did it taste?

I’m not really a coffee fan, but Java wasn’t as bad as I remembered.

Add John Constable to the use-of-light-list.

Did Bill allow any of them to speak ten words before interrupting? He’s the Charlie Rose of blowhards.

We went to Dali’s house in Cadaques, Espana several years ago. Kitsch heaven.

She’s a Buddhist libertarian. I gotta go wash my hands before face-palming.

My son’s become a Buddhist, but in a different branch (sect? school?) than this woman. He’s not a libertarian, thankfully.

The different strains of Buddhism are as confusing to me as the differences among Protestant Christian sects. So much hair splitting and reverence of charismatic leaders in both.

I think he’s hinting that he has teh Ebola.

CCJ would LOVE to develop Ebola, just to prove how right he was.
