In Which My Tweet About #Ebola and Evolution Goes Viral

Creationists get upset

I’m going to kick off the week by humble-bragging about this off-handed tweet I posted over the weekend that has now gone viral (ironic considering the subject), with more than 7200 retweets as I write this.

This really touched a nerve, I guess, and I’ve now received hundreds of replies (possibly over a thousand, I haven’t counted), many of them from creationists.

One common theme in replies from conservatives is that “not all conservatives” are creationists or deny the science of evolution — but while it may be true that not every single conservative is a creationist, for years every poll on the subject has shown that a majority of Republicans not only disbelieve evolution, they’re hard core young Earth creationists.

(And by the way, my tweet didn’t even say that “all conservatives” are creationists, but it sure upset the ones who are.)

Two other common responses from creationists:

  1. We don't deny micro-evolution, just macro-evolution. If Ebola evolves, it's only micro-evolution.
  2. If Ebola ever becomes airborne, that won't be evolution -- it will be mutation. That's different.

Both of these talking points are well-worn creationist dodges, and they’re both bogus.

1. While biologists do use the terms “micro-evolution” and “macro-evolution,” they both refer to the same well-understood mechanism of evolution; the only difference is the scale, both in time and in size. Micro-evolution can take place much more quickly, because microorganisms breed much faster and have much shorter life spans.

2. The “mutation isn’t evolution” talking point is another nonsensical dodge, because biologists know that mutations are one of the most important mechanisms through which evolution occurs. If Ebola does ever become airborne (a very remote possibility, according to those who’ve studied the disease), it will most likely be due to a mutation that enables the virus to adapt better to its environment — leading to a general trend of evolution within the virus population, by means of natural selection.

I’ve answered these talking points just for reference, because unfortunately the people who spout them are impervious to logic, and simply don’t care about the truth of these issues. They’re rejecting the science of evolution because of an atavistic fear that it renders their cherished belief systems irrelevant, not out of logic — so they’ll never be convinced by logical arguments.

Also for reference, I highly recommend TalkOrigin’s Index to Creationist Claims, an exhaustive list of the many deceptive, false, and/or misleading talking points creationists use in these kinds of arguments (no matter how many times they’ve been debunked).

And if High Definition TV channels evolved from Standard Definition TV channels, why do we still have Standard Definition TV channels?????????

I can see the any evolution in the minds of young earth creationists seems a self “stupudifying” prophesy.

A viral tweet about bird flu would be even better, but not very timely.

If Ebola evolves, it’s only micro-evolution.

because viruses are so very tiny microscopically, libturd…

Why does this stuff bother me more when coming from the younger generation?

Offensive graffiti — including swastikas — was found early Sunday morning on the Alpha Epsilon Pi chapter house at Emory University, the university confirmed to Business Insider Sunday.

AEPi is a national traditionally Jewish fraternity, and the swastikas and other graffiti were spray-painted on the house shortly after the end of Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in Judaism. The Emory campus police are investigating the offensive graffiti and have increased patrols around the area of the fraternity house, according to the university.

honestly I read the reviews of a place and weigh out the bad and the good. In this case there were some bad reviews but overall it had 4 stars. I can’t compare it to other cuban places since the only others I have been to I have had something different than what I had today and one of the places is a cuban bakery that makes awesome pork sandwiches.

Yelp hasn’t steered me wrong so far, though if it ever does, believe me, there’ll be a negative review about the place.

Ebola is named after the African river where it was first identified. If it were named “Oder” or “Shannon” instead and the big outbreaks were occurring in Stuttgart or Limerick, would we be seeing the same degree of fear and loathing over a single case? The same demands for draconian quarantine, not to mention Kincannon’s call for the outright extermination of possible carriers?
This is a real threat, but the real magnitude of that threat has little or nothing to do with the hysteria.

Reading some of the crazy crap you all are linking makes me think anyone that disagrees with the concept of evolution are missing out on their own beings as examples.

Yeah, it’s true…evolution right before all our eyes. Ongoing.

Many RWNJs are showing their brains are shrinking. They are growing dumber. Who knows some day they may be totally incapable of being considered human.

While at the very same time, another group of humans are evolving into more intelligent and caring as they grow and learn to use more and more of their brains.

And right there is a branch in evolutionary development. One group gets to a point where natural tendencies take over and the branch on the tree splits.

To me, the crazy thing about denying evolution is that many of them fully accept the concept, because when you think about it change in the genomes of a population over time via Natural Selection is such an obviously true thing. But they insist it cannot do what it obviously did.

I used to get into these discussions over and over with a friend I think of as ‘a skeptic trapped in a true believer’s body’, who had to do all sorts of mental gymnastics and semantic trickery to avoid accepting Evolution.
