Wingnut Dolt Chuck C. Johnson Says Ferguson Protesters Sang “Communist Song” in the “Opera”

Wrong on so many levels
Wingnuts • Views: 27,439

Chuck C. Johnson is developing into one of the most disgusting, dishonest smear merchants in the right wing blogosphere, and that’s really sayin’ something. As we all know, the right wing base has a Pavlovian reaction to the “communist” word, so here comes the Ginger Avenger with a really vile (and really sloppy) smear job to attack the protest by Michael Brown supporters at the St. Louis Symphony.

This is his original post, still in the Google cache: Ferguson Protestors Sang Communist Song at Opera.

He’s edited it since he posted it, after people pointed out to him on Twitter that he got the location wrong (it was the St. Louis Symphony, not the Opera), and got Florence Reece’s name wrong (he called her “Florence Reed”). A screenshot:

Ferguson protestors didn’t just disrupt the St. Louis Opera. They disrupted it by singing “Which Side Are You On?” a Communist song from the 1930s.

Here’s the video of the protest.

Here’s a cover by Pete Seeger of the 1931 song by Florence Reed, a pro-Communist union activist.

The choice of a union song suggests that this Michael Brown protest might have been led by union organizers. Gotnews has already pointed to the role the New Black Panthers have played in deceiving the public about what really happened between Michael Brown and Officer Darren Wilson.

“I’ve paid $85 for one ticket … I’d like to know how they got in to hang a banner,” says a Twitter tipster.

So would we.

Oooh, the “Black Panther” connection! Scary!

But if “Which Side Are You On?” is a “Communist song,” that’s pretty amazing — because Florence Reece was actually only 12 years old when she wrote it. That’s awfully young to be a goddamn commie.

In fact, the song is about the Harlan County War — the coal miners’ strike against their brutal exploitation by thuggish mine owners, who were sending goons to beat and murder striking workers. Typical of right wing shill Chuck Johnson to label that “communism.”

And his question about how the protesters got into the Symphony — can you guess how these evil commies did it?

By buying tickets, those sneaky Marxists! And members of the symphony and the audience actually applauded the protesters.

The newspaper reports that the interruption was met with applause from some members of the audience and the symphony.

Symphony publicist Erika Ebsworth-Goold tells KMOX-TV and the Post-Dispatch that the protesters were ticketed members of the audience.

Right wing journalism at its finest!

UPDATE at 10/7/14 11:07:54 am by Charles Johnson

But the fail gets even more fail-ier! LGF contributor @lawhawk points out that, in fact, the protesters didn’t “disrupt” anything; they timed their protest for right after the intermission, before the symphony began playing the second half of the concert.

Let’s also clarify something else about the timing of when the protesters disrupted the “opera” (which wasn’t an opera, but a performance by the STL Philaharmonic.

It was as the intermission was ending and before the orchestra began its second half performance.

Updated at 2:15 Monday with corrected reference to tune sung by Powell Symphony Hall protesters.

Michael Brown protesters interrupted the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s concert on Saturday night, causing a brief delay in the performance at Powell Symphony Hall.

The orchestra and chorus were preparing to perform Johannes Brahms’ Requiem just after intermission when two audience members in the middle aisle on the main floor began singing “Which Side are You On?” - an organized labor tune with origins in the infamous 1931 Harlan, Kentucky coal strike.

They soon were joined, in harmony, by other protesters, who stood at seats in various locations on the main floor and in the balcony.

The protesters then unfurled three hand-painted banners and hung them from the Dress Circle boxes. One banner listed the birth and death date of Brown, who was shot by Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9.

The five-minute interruption was met with a smattering of applause from some audience members, as well as members of the orchestra and chorus. Others simply watched as the orchestra remained silent.

The protest ended quietly as participants left voluntarily, chanting, “Black lives matter.” Conductor Markus Stenz resumed the concert shortly thereafter.

SLSO publicist Erika Ebsworth-Goold said the protesters were paying members of the audience. She said they left the building peacefully.

Meanwhile, Darren Wilson supporters were at the Cardinals playoff games:

At the same time, a federal judge has ruled that the police conduct during protests were unconstitutional.

And voting officials say that far from the 3,000+ that enrolled to vote after the shooting, only 128 have done so:

14 RealityBasedSteve  Oct 7, 2014 10:59:11am

And they didn’t sing during the performance. They started to sing when the conductor took the stage after the intermission. This was carefully planned by people who knew exactly what to do the get the message out in the most positive manner. In other words, they had to be communists. (at least if you’re a total idiot)

Hoft, of course, goes into panic mode with scare quotes and all caps tweets. [WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!]

Calm down. The US military is better prepared than most to deal with NBC threats (nuclear, biological, and chemical). They’ve got an entire group dedicated to these kinds of threats (USAMRIID) The MOPP gear is going to get its workout, as are protocols for decontamination. We’re going to be training locals to help infected patients too.

The situation is dire, and they need experts on the ground to deal with the epidemic there so that it doesn’t spread out of control elsewhere. That means getting people with experience on handling epidemics and diseases like Ebola.

I just started Rick Perlstein’s “The Invisible Bridge” and I was unaware of the absurd fetishization of the returned Vietnam POWs (although I was already all-too-aware of the malignant contempt with which other veterans who, by and large, didn’t enjoy the privileges of rank and status that the downed Pilots had, were treated by the Right who couldn’t wrap them in flags as easily).

These idiots, for all their love of the troops don’t know that there are medical corps in both the navy and army. Someone ought to let them know, just so they have an option not to be fucking stupid. Not that they’ll take it, but hey, I’m a liberal, I believe in education.

They sure as fuck have no problem sending their beloved troops into harms way in the middle east. I’m thinking more of our troops have been killed in the last 13 yrs than will ever die from Ebola, but you don’t hear a peep about that sort of death from these assholes. They also sure as fuck have no problem at all with seeing troops families on food stamps or cutting their other benefits when they come home with limbs blown off or traumatic brain injury or PTSD. I AM SO SICK OF HEARING HOW THEY AND ONLY THEY LOVE THE TROOPS. Bullfuckingshit.

Of course. I was simply responding to the ignorant statement about using vets for propaganda while ignoring them.

Conservatives never have and never will give a single, solitary shit about poor people. Nothing we do will change that. But they do give lip service to veterans. We need to demonstrate that is all it is; lip service.

Not the “hippies spitting on troops” apocrypha (which I have to assume would have been heavily covered in local media but reports on such events are nearly absent from the record and certainly nowhere near as common as the rightist “memory” of the time holds).

140 KiTA  Oct 7, 2014 12:14:55pm

Got into a very long debate with the nutter at work yesterday.

Learned that the Low Information Nuts are currently being told to demonize Elizabeth Warren since they’re worried that she’ll be brought in to replace Hillary (because Benghazi disqualifies her from running, apparently). They don’t know anything about her except she’s apparently a Marxist who wants to destroy America. I’m sure they’ll get more made up bullshit details later on.

Also discovered the name Immanuel Velikovsky, which is where the nutter gets most of his “theories” (crackpot ravings) about history. Velikovsky apparently has a book out that suggests — of course — that all religions are depicting the same factual events, which include a comet coming from Jupiter, somehow causing the earth to stop spinning for 3 days but not wiping out all life on the planet, causing the flood because it’s tail pointed at the Earth somehow, then flying off (causing the Earth to start spinning again I guess) and becoming Venus. Oh, and space lightning from this magic comet caused Atlantis to sink into the ocean.

He also mentioned some book “The Electric Universe” which is apparently some nutter descendant of Velikovsky claiming that the stars are really red hot giant capacitors or somesuch nonsense — because gravity doesn’t exist, it’s really all electricity.

… Yeah. He really didn’t react well to me just going “well no, that didn’t happen, but please go on” or “well no, that’s not how that works, at all,” every time he brought up something insane.

re: #140 KiTA

Ha! I read some Velikovsky in high school, just for the Lulz. He is a.) nuts, and b.) writes in a fashion that almost sounds plausible unless you have some vague knowledge of the subject at hand.

I still remember one of the big points in Ages in Chaos hinged on Hatshepsut being the Queen of Sheba and hence a large chunk of history was actually a repeat of earlier history. His evidence? When Hatshepsut sent ships to Punt to bring back stuff she was shown next to the ships sending them off, but really she would have been shown on the ships except that she was too large to fit (Egyptians showed important people much larger than peasants.) Now, I’m not an Egyptologist, nor was I back then, but even I knew that they just plopped the giant pharaohs onto sufficiently large chariots or ships or whatever. They didn’t have them standing around nearby, unless that is actually what they were doing at the time.
That was his only evidence for this massive historical revision.

Is that a guy on the wolf carrying a robot on his back or is that a robot on the wolf with some guy’s head in a basket on his chest?

Its a servo-skull slaved to his armor systems.

Servo-skulls are drone-like robotic devices that appear to be human skulls outfitted with electronic or cybernetic components that utilise embedded anti-gravity field generators to allow them to hover and drift bodiless through the air. They are fashioned from the skulls of loyal Adepts of the Adeptus Terra and other pious Imperial servants to which robotic components and an antigravitic impeller have been added. This is so that they may continue their work for the Emperor of Mankind even after death. To have one’s skull chosen to serve as a Servo-skull is a great honour in the Imperium, for it implies one’s service in life has been satisfactory enough to warrant continuation beyond death.

OT Drive-by: Ugh—Jennifer Rubin is pimping for Huckabee & the fundies now, using the whole rah-rah “stand with Israel” thing. It’s such an utter load of crap and she has to know that.

Christians ‘Stand with Israel’

On the day after Jews’ holiest day of the year (Yom Kippur), a mostly Christian throng of zealous pro-Zionist Christians held a “Stand with Israel” rally on Capitol Hill on Sunday. For two hours plus, they sang, they prayed, they cheered and they spoke in defense of Israel. The rally was co-sponsored by Concerned Women for America (over half-a-million religious women voters who adopted Israel as a core issue) and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee. Both CWA president Penny Nance and Huckabee repeatedly delivered the message: America — and Christians in particular — must stand with Israel. Implicitly and sometimes explicitly mentioned was the argument that the administration is insufficiently supportive of Israel and clueless about the enormity of the jihadist threat. […]

Concerned Women for America is brought to you by Beverly LaHaye. Yes, wife of that LaHaye (of the “Left Behind” rapture books and all that). Naturally they are anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-feminism and anti-sex education. More at Right Wing Watch…

There’s also this:

Arguing that both nations value religious liberty he proclaimed that the United States can only be understood in the context of “God’s providence.” They fervently believe that if they break faith with Israel, God will break faith with them. (“If America doesn’t stand with Israel God will remove his hand from us,” Huckabee told them.)

And this very creepy tidbit:

Second, Huckabee speaks to these kind of voters in a way that few other politicians do. It stems from his faith, not from a political agenda. He embodies their values and world view, and they know this. He speaks with the passion of a preacher, not with the anger of a politician bent on inflaming the crowd. […]

Finally this, equally chilling:

Third, this crowd sees themselves engaged in an existential threat against radical Islam. […]

They want a holy war, just like the jihadis. This is why all fundies make me sick—they’re the effing scourge of humanity.

Oh, and yesterday my mailbox suddenly started filling up with Google alerts on articles from right-wing websites/media outlets by or about many of 2008’s early contenders for the GOP nomination: Michele Bachmann, Peter King, Hermain Cain, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney—the only one missing is New Gingrich, but, hey, it’s only Tuesday. Did I mention he was endorsed by the LaHayes in 2012? So sorry, Newt, looks like the fundies are going with a “true believer” this time.

The common thread? C’mon, three guesses, the first two don’t count. Yep: ZOMG, the scary Muslims are coming—run (to us) for your lives!11!!

There goes that non-existent Islamophobia again. //

(Sheesh, I prolly should’ve made this a Page, huh? Oh, well…)

Despite my protestations, the Better Half insists on shopping at Wal-Mart for some items. In some ways, it’s a better grocery store than the dedicated grocery stores in town, and unfortunately our Target can’t/won’t expand into a full Super Target. Never mind the dirty, disorganized aisles; the uninterested employees; the sometimes-creepy clientele; or the parking lot that reminds me of Mad Max.

Even if there are better options around, for some people, it’s all about price and convenience, and I really can’t blame them too much.

SF author James P Hogan fell down the Velikovsky hole in his later years. Along with denial and other conspiracy theories such as Holocaust denial. There is a USENET meme about designating people who degrade from logic into that land as have been hit by the “brain eater”.*

* - Which I think was first used in reference to the quality and political shrillness of Robert Heinlein’s later works.

more on the train derailment:

from the link:

Officials are worried about toxic smoke from the burning cars and are keeping people eight kilometres from the scene.

A spokesman for CN said the train was hauling 100 cars, 26 which derailed.

Six of them contained hazardous materials, including four that had either hydrochloric acid or caustic soda.

The other two had petroleum distillates, CN said.

re: #180 Ian G.

Bartlett is a good reminder that it is possible to have a decent conservative movement in this country. It’s just going to be a while before the religious loons, the galt-worshippers, and the white supremacists die off.

Bartlett may have been tossed under the bus, and he may have come around in terms of economics, but I suspect he’s still too close to the white supremacists. From 2012, published in what I consider a racist rag (The American Conservative):

[…]

I thought knowing the Democratic Party’s pre-1964 history of racism, which is indisputable, would give Republicans a story to tell when they went before black groups to solicit votes. I thought it would also make Republicans more sympathetic to the problems of the black community, many of which are historical in their origins. Analyses by economists and sociologists show that historical racism still holds back African-Americans even though it has diminished radically since the 1960s.

So I wrote Wrong on Race: The Democratic Party’s Buried Past. Unfortunately, it was published the day Barack Obama won the Iowa caucuses. But I still held out hope that Hillary Clinton, who was pandering to the white working class in unsubtle racial terms, would capture the Democratic nomination. The anger among blacks at having the nomination effectively stolen from Obama would make them highly receptive to GOP outreach, I believed. I even met with John McCain’s staff about this.

[…]

Although the approach I suggested in my race book was ill-timed, the underlying theory is more true than ever. If Republicans can’t bring blacks into their coalition, they are finished at the presidential level, given the rapid rise of the Latino population. Perhaps after 2016, they may be willing to put my strategy into operation.

[…]

Likud’s view on the social issues is thus:

Abortion on demand, at taxpayer expense, for any reason whatsoever.
Gay people should be just as drafted as straight people.
Marriage is either religious, or fly to Cypress for a civil marriage that the State will recognize when you come home.
