AR GOP Senate Candidate Tom Cotton: Terrorists, Immigrants and Drug Cartels Want to Infiltrate Arkansas

FEAR
Wingnuts • Views: 27,732

GOP Rep. Tom Cotton is running for the Senate in Arkansas, and he’s the latest Republican to try to mash all the various right wing fear memes together into a hellish brew of paranoia. Immigration, terrorism, ISIS, human trafficking — all that’s missing is a chupacabra with Ebola: Tom Cotton: Terrorists Collaborating With Mexican Drug Cartels to Infiltrate Arkansas

Exhibit A: GOP Rep. Tom Cotton, who is running for Senate in Arkansas. The Congressman told a tele-town-hall meeting that the Islamic State is actively working with Mexican drug cartels who are looking to expand into the terrorism business — and that the groups, working in tandem, could infiltrate the country and attack people in Arkansas.

On audio of the town-hall, which was recorded by Arkansas Democrats, the key moment comes at around the 10:50 mark. Cotton was asked by a voter why the children crossing the border were allowed to stay for months (presumably while awaiting a court date). Cotton launched into a long answer about amnesty and the need to build a border fence, and added (emphasis mine):

“The problem is with Mark Pryor and Barack Obama refusing to enforce our immigration laws, and refusing to secure our border. I’ll change that when I’m in the United States Senate. And I would add, it’s not just an immigration problem. We now know that it’s a security problem. Groups like the Islamic State collaborate with drug cartels in Mexico who have clearly shown they’re willing to expand outside the drug trade into human trafficking and potentially even terrorism.

They could infiltrate our defenseless border and attack us right here in places like Arkansas. This is an urgent problem and it’s time we got serious about it, and I’ll be serious about it in the United States Senate.”

I somehow highly doubt that a radical Islamist bunch of murderous assholes would work well with a drug-smuggling, murderous bunch of amoral assholes from a mostly-Christian country.

But stranger things have happened.

Bad news coming out of Yosemite. They’re fighting another wildfire, and it appears that air traffic control lost contact with one of the air tankers.

Other outlets are reporting the single pilot plane crashed, but no word on whether they’ve found the crash site or a survivor.

Other outlets are reporting the single pilot plane crashed, but no word on whether they’ve found the crash site or a survivor.

According to a Fresno TV station, it’s a 1,200-gallon capacity plane, which would make it a S2F:

Grumman S-2 Tracker USA Medium 1,200 US gallons (4,500 L)

Former sub hunter for the Navy. Rugged little airplane w/ two big honking radials. The area around the fire is adjacent to the Merced River and has BIG elevation changes. A challenging environment for air tankers.

My best wishes for the pilots, but these things generally don’t end well. Hitting a cloud formation made of cumulo-granite never does.

Sad day.

One of the problems of Twitter, as I see it, is they don’t “tend the garden” like Charles does here (or really any quality comment section). You can’t just open the sewers and expect people to keep using your comment section. Eventually, you end up with the comments section of a local newspaper.

So glad we dropped BofA at work for all credit card transactions. Getting Square has been a boon for us and the customers.

The real advantage of Square will hopefully be lowering the rent seeking in the middle of CC transactions.

Not surprising but still sad:

Students’ Religiosity More Influential Than Education in Views on Evolution

College students’ views on evolution are shaped significantly more by religiosity than education, according to a survey of Southern students.

The study, said to be the first in-depth analysis on the acceptance of evolution in this region, has been accepted for publication in the journal Evolution: Education and Outreach.

[The survey] used data gathered from questionnaires answered by approximately 3,000 UA students.

“Religion is much more important than all the other measured educational variables, combined, in influencing their views on evolution,” said [author] Rissler.

Most previous studies on evolution views were done in the Midwest and Northeast, Rissler said, and hearing many of her students say the topic was avoided in their high-school science classes helped prompt the study, she said.

“I’ve had many, many students who have said, ‘We didn’t talk about it at all. My teacher literally said, I’m taking this section, and we’re moving on because I’m not dealing with it.’”

The study also looked at whether students’ acceptance of evolution increased following exposure to the topic in college classrooms.

“The only group of students who improved in their acceptance of evolution was the group of students who were the least religious,” Rissler said.

The degree of religiosity among surveyed students was based on self-reported frequency of church attendance. […]

Other survey results included: science majors were more accepting of evolution than non-science majors; students who were taught evolution or neither evolution nor creationism in high school had significantly higher acceptance rates of evolution than those taught both evolution and creationism or just creationism; and many religious students appeared to reject evolution because of their faith even though they understand that the scientific community accepts evolutionary theory as valid.

The skiing community has had a week from hell. The best and brightest among us keep on dying young.

It’s the advent of the backcountry era, where any motivated gomer can get good, reliable gear that’ll get them to a place where there are no chiarlifts and the snow is stoopid deep.

In the last decade I’ve slowly come to accept that the best skiers and snowboarders out there are going to be picked off by the mountains one by one as the years go on, I’ve accepted that as a fact of life. And that’s horribly tragic.

That’s the main debate being had in backcountry skiing circles. Like the song from The Clash, “Should I Stay Or Should I Go?”

On 20 April 2013 six guys trekked out from U.S. Highway 6 on Loveland Pass in Colorado to go ride some sickness. Only one of them came back, and three of the deceased were right below him - his buddy’s face was right next to his knee.

All those guys were experienced, well-equipped, knowledgeable. They were all together for a fundraiser for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and to promote backcountry skiing.

The more I think about it, the more I can ascertain that a domino effect of bad decisions took place that horrible day in a short amount of time - no one said “No” - and BAM you get the worst avalanche accident in Colorado in decades.

The skiing community has to grapple with the risk vs. reward thing when it comes to the backcountry. And that’s a hard thing to do; the best and brightest skiers and snowboarders can do nothing but push the farthest and do the craziest shit. And every year a handful of them die with their boots on.

I remember when I was at the very beginning of my wedding plans and someone had come in and didn’t talk to me, but talked to my parents,” Anna said, explaining her parents went on to make a big decision about the wedding without asking her. “I remember, like, being a little upset and thinking, ‘That’s not fair. I’m supposed to be able to make those decisions.’ And then God convicted me that pride is reserving for myself the right to make the final decision.

There’s some serious mind control going on there.

Oh, and the sister Jessa…:

Following up her controversial post from the Holocaust museum and her visit to The Creation Museum, Jessa shared links to an Answers in Genesis article that argues the earth is “about 6,000 years old.”

The article goes to great lengths to explain radiometric dating, why it isn’t reliable and how new studies from the RATE Group (a subsidiary of the Institute for Creation Research) point to a “young earth.” The author concludes, “The best way to learn about history and the age of the earth is to consult the history book of the universe — the Bible.

Serious, serious mind control.

And there’s at least one judge in Alabama with a sense of irony:

The seven Alabamians arrested for singing and praying in the State Capitol as an act of faith in support of health care and Medicaid expansion were found not guilty following their trial in Montgomery County District Court today. The purpose of their moral stand remains to persuade Gov. Robert Bentley to extend Medicaid coverage and save the lives of Alabamians.

In his oral ruling from the bench, Judge W. Troy Massey said that this case follows in the long history and tradition of Americans risking jail to stand up for principles greater than themselves. He cited Americans in 1773, who trespassed onto three ships and destroyed $1 million worth of tea (in 1773 dollars) by dumping it into the Boston Harbor. Today we know that as the Boston Tea Party. He cited Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in 1955 in protest of segregation, which led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and advances in desegregation of public transportation. He cited protests in Selma in 1965, which led to the Voting Rights Act. He cited Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s lifetime of nonviolent protests and others. …snip

I stuck with Arrow through the second season. It’s gotten more soap-opera-ish with all the melodrama in the Queen family, and it seems so many people know who Arrow really is that Oliver might just as well do a Tony Stark and “come out,” so to speak.

I’ll give season 3 a chance, too.

Both sides, equally. And it sums up the electoral dynamic: the GOP base makes gains in the mid-terms, sees that as a mandate to be “more conservative” in the general election and loses humiliatingly.

Yup. It exemplifies the dichotomy between the left and the right when it comes to midterms elections: the left is typically apathetic while the right is typically fanatical. The Dems should never (or hardly never) lose midterms if they had consistently successful GOTV campaigns.

Actually it can. As long as the Circuit Courts keep striking down ssm bans themselves, there is no reason for the Court to hear a case. And even if a Circuit doesn’t take the hint the Court dropped Monday and affirms a ssm ban, the Court, in its infinite wisdom, could choose not to hear that appeal and allow a region of the country to continue to ban ssm, though I don’t think they would.

If that was going to be pushed as a viable option that had to be started up seriously years ago. Unless the states at that time also changed their statutes so that all they did was “civil unions” and stopped using marriage as a legal term.

They have to get a split of authority among the circuits, and so far all the circuits are finding the SSM bans (whether by statute or constitutional amendment to the state constitution) unconstitutional on equal protection grounds.

The 5th, 6th, 8th, and 11th still have to weigh in, but the majority of circuits (7 in total - 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, and 10) either have ruled against SSM or the states have already legalized there.

The longer this goes, the less likely it becomes that the SSM opponents will prevail at the circuit level because the weight of authority from other circuits becomes overwhelming and persuasive. Windsor has a huge reason to do with that - particularly the Scalia dissent which noted this very outcome (mostly spoiled grapes, but notes too that the majority laid the groundwork for this outcome because the Equal Protection grounds are afforded to gays seeking the benefits of marriage).

The Supreme Court simply handed it back to the state courts parsing the individual state constitutions and the Federal appeals courts parsing contested state laws in light of the fourteenth amendment.

I’m glad they did, it may be slower this way but it doesn’t give the other side as much room to incite hatred of the government because of “judicial activism” and the courts “ruling by fiat.”

The next best chance for a circuit split is the 6th Circuit, since during oral arguments it appeared that two of the judges favored affirming the bans. Judge Sutton may rethink his position that it is in the best interest of homosexuals to win their neighbors’ hearts and minds through the democratic process rather than securing their rights through the courts in light of the Courts rejection of the other appeals this week. Even if he doesn’t, the full 6th Circuit may strike ssm bans en banc. I assume that establishment Republicans would prefer that ssm bans be eliminated in dribs and drabs by the Circuits, instead of by a sweeping Supreme Court opinion next year which would force GOP presidential nominees to take a position on the issue.

I agree its too late now, though I read one Utah legislator filed a bill to name same-sex marriages “pairages.” If they were going to constitutionally created civil unions, they would need a definitions statute specifying that a “civil union” is a “marriage” so that people entering into civil unions would get all of the benefits of marriage.

The Idaho AG is claiming that there’s some kind of procedural matter that prevents the state from complying with the 9th Circuit’s ruling. That could actually be true with the need to update state regulations to comply - and that all localities follow the same procedures. The 9th could turn around and give the state a deadline to get those changes in place to comply with the ruling. Like say 30-90 days. Enough time for the state to update marriage forms and to make it clear that the state cannot ban gays from marrying.

So either a lot of additional legal work to clean up the language, or an attempt to make a distinction without a legal difference.

It still creates a separate but equal (although I love the term Pairage…I am officially calling myself pairried from now on!) Marriage has meaning (which is not religious) and it would be unfair to say that these people cannot get married and have the same kind of love than anyone else has - completely setting aside the legal benefits.

And I always say that all gay people should have the same right to fuck up their lives by getting married as everyone else. ;-)

Hospitals around the nation are doing that - not just NYC. Still NYC is the nation’s largest international airport passenger destination (combined JFK and EWR international travel passenger traffic tops 35+ million). Miami is second with ~18.5 million. LAX has ~16.8 million. It makes sense for checking whether NYC area hospitals are prepared to deal with potential cases that have slipped through the detection systems in place in West Africa and Europe.

Well, that sucks.

The Texas patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, died. I figure that the right wingers will go nuts with that, but there’s a few things to keep in mind.

There have been more than 5,000 suspected cases of Ebola in the US, but only one actual confirmed case. That’s 5,000 false alarms. Each time, the health authorities have to check and contact trace to see whether other people are possibly infected, as well as rule out that the ailment is Ebola.

The CDC is fielding 800+ calls a day about suspected cases, up from about 50 a day prior to Duncan’s confirmed case.

Note too that in the past decade, the United States had five imported cases of Viral Hemorrhagic Fever diseases similar to Ebola (1 Marburg, 4 Lassa), according to the CDC.

And yet, the strongest cyclone on record - a typhoon in the Pacific is roaring along. Typhoon Vongfong is roaring along. It’s the strongest one since Hayun. Top speeds of 180 mph.

It’s heading for Southern Islands of Japan.

As of 6 p.m. Japanese time Wednesday (5 a.m. EDT Wednesday in the U.S.), the eye of Vongfong was just over 600 miles south-southeast of , moving west-northwest at about 8 mph.

Maximum sustained winds had tailed off a bit, but were still an estimated 165 mph, solidly the equivalent of a , according to the U.S. military’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

With low vertical wind shear (change in wind speed and/or direction with height), impressive outflow (winds in the upper levels spreading apart from the center, favoring upward motion and thunderstorms) and warm western Pacific water, Vongfong intensified explosively.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Vongfong surpassed Genevieve for the most intense western Pacific typhoon of 2014 by estimated central pressure (900 millibars). On the JMA typhoon intensity scale, Vongfong is the third “violent typhoon” of 2014, following Genevieve and Halong.

Just because the Atlantic basin has been quiet this year doesn’t mean that cyclones (which include hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones depending on where in the world they occur) have not occurred.

It’s global warming for a reason. It’s not merely NYC weather or US weather. It’s the global climate, and it’s reason to worry.

Oh, and that ignores Sandy, which came ashore as an extratropical storm and not as a hurricane, even though the storm was a strong hurricane prior to landfall - and the landfall presented one of the worst storm surges the East Coast has seen.

Not major hurricanes (Cat 3 or higher) at landfall. It was a Cat 3 over the open water, but came ashore in the US at Cat 1 or tropical/extratropical storm (especially over NJ/NY/CT).

We’d just have to ignore the size of the storm, the number of people affected, and the massive and widespread flooding that resulted from those storms, even though they didn’t have the wind speeds associated with particularly devastating storms at landfall.

Per en.wikipedia.org ….Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba.[1] While it was a Category 2 storm off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record (as measured by diameter, with winds spanning 1,100 miles (1,800 km)).[2][3] Estimates as of March 2014 assess damage to have been over $68 billion (2013 USD), a total surpassed only by Hurricane Katrina.[4] …..

The Saffir Simpson scale used to describe hurricanes is based on top sustained wind speeds. It doesn’t factor size, storm surge, or populations affected.

Cat 1 is for storms with top sustained speed of 74+.

Irene and Sandy both had sustained speeds less than that at landfall. Sandy’s big damage wasn’t wind, but storm surge. Irene’s main damage was due to massive and widespread flooding.

The NWS treats Sandy as extratropical at landfall due to how the storm interacted with various fronts and airmasses.

I find meterology mildly fascinating (nothing like hubby tho, who is often glued to Accuweather) but if this is what mild is considered, the NWS really needs to recalculate how they measure these things. How do you tell someone to evacuate a no big deal hurricane (on paper) when all the other things make it as deadly as a Cat 5 rolling through Jamaica?

There are some meterologists who are trying to develop different ways to measure these kinds of storms (as well as winter storms).

Winter storms are particularly interesting in this respect. Beyond calling a storm a blizzard, which relates to winds blowing 35 mph or more, or a Nor’easter (which is an extratropical storm that often contains blizzard conditions and heavy snow, there’s no way to really quantify storms. One measure is to relate snowfall to the number of people affected (regional snowfall impact - NESIS).

Some scales look at intensity.

It may be possible to do something similar with hurricanes in this fashion - one that takes storm surge, wind damage, and population into effect.

By the end of the process, I had come to a slightly disquieting conclusion: we are still being governed by Normans

Take house prices. According to the author Kevin Cahill,
the main driver behind the absurd expense of owning land and property
in Britain is that so much of the nation’s land is locked up by a tiny
elite. Just 0.3% of the population - 160,000 families - own two thirds
of the country. Less than 1% of the population owns 70% of the land,
running Britain a close second to Brazil for the title of the country
with the most unequal land distribution on Earth.

The land grab was not the only injustice perpetrated by the Normans
that has echoed down the centuries. William built a network of castles
with English slave labour from which he controlled the rebellious
populace by force. This method of colonisation and control was later
exported to Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as the descendants of the
Norman kings extended their empire from England to the Celtic nations.
They taxed the poor harshly (the Domesday book
is a tax collector’s manual), deepening rural poverty to enrich royal
coffers which were used to fight the continental wars that ravaged
medieval Europe. Not without justification has one historian referred to
Norman rule as a system of “medieval apartheid”.

These
days, I can’t stop myself wondering what kind of country this might be
now if William had lost at Hastings. Would we have been spared the
aristocratic estates and the hereditary monarchs? Could the industrial
revolution, even the empire, have happened in the same way without that
intense concentration of land and power? Would the English be a less
deferential people than they often still, frustratingly, are?

The Norman conquest spurred a decade-long campaign of underground
resistance by guerrilla bands across England - a story that is largely
forgotten now. The Normans called these rebels the “silvatici” - the men
of the woods, or the wild men
- and they proved as hard to defeat as guerrilla fighters always are.
Though the Normans were never expelled, the spirit of the silvatici can
be traced throughout later English history, from the Peasants’ Revolt to the tales of Robin Hood. ,Not everyone takes conquest lying down. Today’s elites might like to take note.

Someone is being monitored in Tarrytown (in Westchester County) NY for possible symptoms, but it isn’t a confirmed case.

This morning, on New York Post Albany correspondent Fred Dicker’s Albany radio show on WGDJ TALK 1300, Astorino talked about a suspected Ebola case in Westchester.

“I found out late last night that there is a patient at one of our hospitals in Westchester that was from Western Africa. He has not been there recently but he has been in contact with people who were. He is being treated. They cannot tell if it’s Ebola. They do not believe that it is; they believe that it’s low-risk.

Astorino has been on Gov. Cuomo about Cuomo’s statements regarding Ebola, so Astorino’s comments (who’s running for governor, and Dicker, who hates Cuomo for his SAFE gun law with particular venom) have to be taken with some sodium chloride.

A man died in Texas from Ebola.

Another man died in South Carolina from the flu.

One of these disease will kill thousands of Americans

I don’t know if you follow Jim on Facebook, but he put up a very clever expanded version of this tweet earlier.

And so, here in the United States a man has died from a highly contagious viral disease.

You might have heard of this, it made the papers this morning.

The dead man, he won’t be the last.

It begins with cold-like symptoms, sniffles, aches, sore throat. And while those symptoms persist the infected are highly contagious. A sneeze, a cough, bodily fluids, that’s all it takes. It moves through the population like wildfire along a windy California ridge.

Before he died, this man may have infected dozens of others - and they are out there, right now, in the crowd with the virus growing inside them. They could be standing next to you right now, at the bus stop, in the office, in the schools, sleeping in the bed beside you with death brewing in their bloodstream.

Before this disease has run its course many, many more will die.The average mortality rate for the untreated is 800 per 100,000, meaning maybe as many as 2 MILLION will die worldwide this year alone. Infants, the aged, those with compromised immune systems are most at risk, but it can and does kill healthy people as well.

There’s a vaccine.

Oh, yes, there is a vaccine. But many won’t take it. They won’t take it because they’re too busy, or because they believe in thoroughly debunked conspiracy theories, or because they’re afraid it’ll make them sick, or because they think vaccines are a plot by the government and big pharma to steal their money and freedom, or, well, some people just can’t afford it because they’re barely scraping by and they don’t have healthcare insurance. A lot of those people, they’re going to get sick, some will die.

So, anyway, as I…

What?

What’s that?

Vaccine? Well, sure, there’s a vaccine. Safe. Effective. Cheap. We’ve had a vaccine for years, decades. How could you not know this?

What?

Ohhhh, I see, you thought I was talking about…

No.

I was talking about the flu.

The first reported death in the US for this flu season happened yesterday in South Carolina.

But you probably didn’t see the headline, what with the Ebola and all.

no, but infectious disease protocols are well understood, and when you have a person who apparently broke protocol on herself, and then developed a fever, one would think that the prudent approach would be to immediately assume worst case. This is not an individual off the street who’s feeling generally unwell, it’s someone who was highly involved with a known Ebola patient.

That is some seriously stunning breaches of protocol on dealing with Ebola - from the moment the person touched their face to the hospital not initiating isolation protocols the moment the nurse began experiencing fever, to then letting her potentially infect others while waiting at yet another hospital emergency room.

But most people will end up focusing on the dog, which is well besides the point. Doctors had a chance to arrest the development of symptoms or mitigate the potential infection of others by isolating the nurse right after the first symptom developed, but missed those opportunities.

This wasn’t just someone who had flown in and potentially not realized they had come into contact with an Ebola patient (which is one version of events in Dallas). The nurse knew she had been caring for an Ebola patient. The doctors and hospital knew. And screwed up.
