A Little Verified Info on Possible New Ebola Patient in Dallas: “A Low Risk Event”

Stop the fear-mongering
Health • Views: 24,777

According to Chief Mark Piland of the Frisco, Texas FIre Department, the patient now under observation in Dallas is a deputy who did not have direct contact with the Ebola patient who died today, Thomas Eric Duncan, but he was reportedly inside Duncan’s apartment and may have had contact with family members.

Chief Piland also reported that the deputy does not have all the symptoms associated with Ebola, but “just a few.” He was transported to Texas Health Resources in Dallas out of an abundance of caution when he complained of stomach pain, and is currently considered a “low risk” patient.

At this point it seems unlikely this deputy has Ebola, but it’s still too early to say for sure.

That’s the extent of the info they’ve released so far.

The deputy has stomach pain and that’s why he went to the clinic.

CDC Director Dr Frieden said in this afternoon’s presser that travelers from West Africa are more at risk of arriving with malaria than ebola.

Let’s hope it’s just a bad case of indigestion. Seriously.

So when will CCJ and Dim Jim be publishing the home address of the patient and everyone he’s had contact with in the last few days?

5 Charles Johnson  Oct 8, 2014 2:11:18pm

Chuck is already fear-mongering about this and claiming it’s a confirmed second Ebola case.

CDC Director Dr Frieden said in this afternoon’s presser that travelers from West Africa are more at risk of arriving with malaria than ebola.

Nobody cares about Malaria, though.

The WHO estimates that in 2010 there were 219 million cases of malaria resulting in 660,000 deaths.[3][97] Others have estimated the number of cases at between 350 and 550 million for falciparum malaria[98] and deaths in 2010 at 1.24 million[99] up from 1.0 million deaths in 1990

I’d go with a diagnosis of fear, (understandable) hypochondria, and stress. I’d sure has hell have butterflies in my stomach if I got near this disease; yes, I know it’s hard to transmit, but tell my lower intestines that.

Let’s hope it’s just a bad case of indigestion. Seriously.

From what I know of Ebola, admittedly not a lot, if he had Ebola he’d have had temperatures in the 104-106F (~40C) long before he’d have stomach problems for it. According to his son he’s been monitored closely and last temperature check was normal.

So I doubt it’s Ebola. For now.

re: #6 wrenchwench

Nobody cares about Malaria, though.

True that.
But I think Dr. Frieden’s point was travelers arriving with a fever were more likely to be malaria-related.

I’d say bet him $100 that it’s not Ebola but we already know Chuck’s track record when it comes to paying off bets.

Wolf Blitzer is talking to Jesse Jackson about Ebola right now…I think I am going to turn off my TV for a while.

14 Justanotherhuman  Oct 8, 2014 2:17:51pm

The Munchkin overate Sat night when his cousin was here (and were brought “Happy Meals” by my g-daughter—shame!) and then ate a shit ton of
tiny cupcakes without asking. Too much fat and sugar for his smallness.

He then proceeded, when taking his bath, to throw up in the bathtub and had a little fever, lasting into Sunday afternoon and very well enough for school Monday. I nursed him just enough.

NOT Ebola.

People get sick. Get fevers. Throw up. Shit happens. All. The. Time.

I’m working on some software that will solve a lot of the problems of dimjim and upchuck. Basically it will do packet inspection on anything they try to send to the internet. The algorithm then determines the “derp rating” to the content and determine the outbound connection speed accordingly. Right now it maxes out at 2800 baud, but don’t expect it to hit that level often.

Apple pie
Roast turkey
Brisket (in the pressure cooker b/c the turkey was in the oven)
Baked teriyaki salmon
Baked rainbow trout
Gefilte fish
Chicken soup
Multi-flavored chip cookies (made by my daughter)
Stuffed cabbage
Buncha different salads:
Rotini pasta
Butter lettuce
Romaine
Cole slaw
Challah

I would take pictures except my daughter used my phone charger to plug in her iphone & then forgot to plug my phone in when she was done.

My granddaughter (just turned 1 year old yesterday) did not like any of the nice toys we got for her, she wanted the following:
1. barbecue lighter
2. TV remote
3. Auntie’s iphone
4. Zedushka’s android
5. Car key
6. iphone charger

I tried to take the iphone charger away from her but she fought for it!

I gave her an old Samsung non-smart cellphone. She looked at it with suspicion because she was thinking that if I’m offering it to her it has to be lame.

That usually helps. I still think the funniest IT story occurred at my first major tech job. I was in charge of helping people with their desktops (as well as writing software and doing the website for the company) but the funniest was one day one of the employees came to me complaining that his AOL CD was stuck in the CD drive on his computer.

Now before I go further this was a commodities brokerage and the owner did not pay for/provide internet for anyone but me and him so if they wanted internet they had to setup their own accounts/software. But I knew for a fact that most never would because their desktops were so old they had 3.5 and 5.25 floppy drives (the commodity trading software was literally on a piece of hardware.

Heh. I had to rescue a 3.5” floppy (with a time sensitive and legally critical brief on it) from a CDROM drive shortly after our office was forced from Xterminal based Data General Unix to Windows 2000.

Supporting windows is why I walked away from IT.

Somebody with math skill check me on this, but the population of Africa is something like 1.1 billion, of whom approx. 5000 have died of Ebola since the disease was identified some 40 years ago. Therefore, even in Africa, your chances of dying of this illness are roughly 1 in 250,000 spread over 40 years. So in America, with a population of about 320 million, and if our medical and quarantine procedures were as backward as those in much of Africa, we could expect maybe 1250 people to die of Ebola over the next 40 years.

Must stop now as I am rushing out to buy duct tape, plastic tarps, and gunz.

Hey, you should do a Kickstarter on that!

Depends on the typo. I misspelled someone’s name once, and I was scared I would be fired. Fortunately, I wasn’t. But a lot of that can be blamed on the gutting of copy desks around the country, who used to clean that shit up.

I once knew a guy who had a real gift for words, but he couldn’t spell to save his life. I was his editor, so I kept most of it out of the paper. Sadly, 15 years later, he was caught plagiarizing a bunch of stuff and ended up as a clerk at a bookstore.

My finest hour was not yesterday when I called back and told whatever guy it was who answered that I didn’t know this person and to stop calling me. Nobody cares about Malaria, though.

That’s because malaria is a more or less known quantity. And malaria patients aren’t directly infectious to the extent that Ebola victims are. Normally, it takes certain species of mosquitoes. Which may not be that common in the US.

Another reason there are so many fears about Ebola is that we don’t actually know how much risk there is of transmission. One would have thought that the Spanish nurse wouldn’t have got it, but she did. One would have thought that after the nurse took down the information that Duncan had been to Liberia, that information would both have reached the people making the decisions during his first visit to the hospital, and made an impression on them. But at least one of those things did not happen.

In other words, we don’t know how wide the divergence is between the capabilities and competencies we thought we have, and those we actually have. We only know that there is a divergence.

Let’s say that a more or less rational follower of the news estimates that it’s 99.9% that the new patient does not have Ebola. That leaves 1 chance in a thousand. But what are the implications of that 1 in a thousand? Pretty dire, actually. Because if he got it from such fleeting secondhand contact, then our prospects of containing the virus are not nearly as good as we thought. So he might be not that sanguine.

Maybe this hypothetical guy is a worry wart. Maybe he should place the odds much lower. But we have a bad track record with such odds making. People estimated, before the Challenger blew up, that it was one in a Big Number that it would blow up. But it happened, out of a NotBigNumber of launches, and so retrospectively, their confidence was wildly misplaced.

It is not entirely unhinged to think that the possible scope of the Ebola epidemic has a “fat tail” in the language of Nouriel Roubini.

The reason the Doctor who treated Mr. Duncan didn’t know that he had just come from Liberia is because of the hospitals computerized forms. The intake nurse entered the information, but that did not go on the printout/worksheet that the Doctor receives. It instead went to the printout/worksheet of the nurse or nursing assistant assigned to the patient.

They have since corrected that so that the information now shows up for both the Doctor and the Nurse.

I’d start with the lights you use most often. We’re slowly switching as bulbs burn out, but of course the CFLs have a considerable lifespan, and we’ve got some incandescents in the (enclosed) hall light fixtures that have been there for 10 or 15 years because they’re almost never on…

You’d be surprised how many light bulbs there are in a typical house. All of the light fixtures in our house, save the 3 small reading lamps in the bedrooms and the 3 ceiling fan lights, have more than 1 bulb.

That’s the plan; I just wanted to get an idea of what the overall cost would be, as well as being able to peg the most-used lights and estimate a quick “tax refund or other windfall, let’s switch out some lights” cost.

This is the direction I’m heading. LEDs are more expensive and that’s why some of the light bulbs in the house have yet to be replaced, but the idea is to get them as I can in that fashion and use surplus money to switch over ones that haven’t yet burned out.

The trouble with LEDs is that they don’t come in high enough lumens to replace the CFLs we have in fixtures with only one bulb (and finding bright enough CFLs was a problem in itself.
In fact, I spent a lot of time looking for a new floor lamp for the living room and ended up replacing the glass diffuser bowl (on the existing lamp) with home-made support for the shade that was big enough for a sufficiently bright CFL, and then remade the lampshade frame to make it taller to fit over the harp properly. And, of course, re-covered the lampshade.

See, I don’t have any CFLs and I’m not terribly concerned about the magnitude of light output (in fact, in many areas, a reduction would not be unwarranted). The one requirement is that any light bulb I buy has to be dimmable, which more or less limits it to high-efficiency incandescents or LEDs.

re: #245 goddamnedfrank

Yes we do.

She thinks she touched her face with a gloved hand while taking off her suit.

One would have thought she would have known not to do that. You’re missing the point—-the new outbreak is on a much larger scale than the previous ones. People were confident it wouldn’t go past 10, 100, 1000, 10000. It’s passed all those milestones already, if you reckon up unconfirmed but extrapolated deaths along with those officially logged. WHO worst case estimate is on the order of a million victims by January.

It remains highly likely that we’ll eventually put a lid on it. But there’s a nonzero, measurable chance that it will get past our remaining firewalls and establish itself beyond reach of prompt eradication, in West Africa, perhaps in India, perhaps in some other nations with a lot of people living close together and very thin medical systems when it comes to interfacing with the poor.

African megacities weren’t as mega or as connected to both the back areas of their own countries, and to the world at large, during previous outbreaks. The equation that models the spread of Ebola has new x’s and y’s as inputs, which means that the answer can be different than last time around.

Work on a vaccine needs to go forward with all possible speed. And Obama’s plan to stand up some teaching hospitals in the region, backed up by 3000 armed forces members for construction and security and what-all, is another good idea. Anything we can do over there to damp the spread will rebound to our shores in the form of fewer imported cases and less disruption of commerce. But these reasons ought not to be needed, because the main reason is better: if these efforts succeed, they’ll save a lot of innocent lives over there.

I can’t believe this came from the head of the Republican Party.

President Obama had a busy day yesterday saving desperate Democrats.

Yesterday in Connecticut, he attended his 415th fundraiser since taking office, after attending two other private fundraisers in New York City.

While President Obama fundraises for vulnerable Democrats, Republicans are on the campaign trail earning your trust and your vote.

Obama may have given up on the American people and on fighting for what our country needs right now, but Republicans have not.

Democrat candidates may have President Obama’s big-money donors, but we have something much more valuable — your support.

javascriptishlike

here’s an interesting little patter somebody showed me today that allows you to do something javascriptish looking, if not actually javascriptish in reality:

let’s say you write these calls in a object in c++, although the pattern works in java as well

myObject* myObject::doAFirstThing(someType someParameter)
{
doAThing(someParameter);

return this:
}

myObject* myObject::doASecondThing(someType someParameter)
{
doANotherThing(someParameter);

return this:
}

aBaseClass* myObject::doAThirdThing(someType someParameter)
{
if (booFx(someParameter))
{
return new derivedClassOne();
}
else
{
return new derivedClassTwo();
}
}

then you can write

myObjectInstance.doAFirstThing(foo).doASecondThing(bar).doAThirdThing(foobar).doBadThings();

diabolical!

except you are going to return a reference (&) not a pointer. Otherwise, your chain would involve ->.

Then, what you do is create an operator that does it, say <<, that looks like this:

template< typename T >
myObject &operator<<( myObject &o, T const &x )
{
o.doSomething( x );
return 0;
}

now you can do things like:

myObjectInstance << 1 << “Hi” << myOtherThing;

But doesn’t that depend on the sort of lighting fixture it is in? In other words, if I have a reading lamp with the standard vertical positioning of the bulb, how would a LED specifically illuminate what I’m reading? With a directional light, or spotlight, that would be fine, but when one is using a light to illuminate a room and as task lighting, the directionality is a problem.

re: #346 calochortus

Yes, you are absolutely right. That is why it is important to start looking at your lighting in a whole new way. Which can be a big inconvenience.
Instead of fixtures that illuminate broad areas, it is good to make a whole new lighting plan for your house with new fixtures. Although you can always retrofit, but then you are stuck with a fixture that may not lend itself to LED lighting.

We had to do this, and a lot of people don’t want the hassle. Also, some cannot get use to this type of lighting. Which I don’t blame them.
At first it was a little different for us as well. We had to get use to it. it didn’t take long. But now, it just seems normal, and we quickly saw the benefits of it, in so many ways. We will never go back to any other kind of lighting.

They have come out recently with some new LED light diffusers that look really nice. It’s basically a cover over the light that diffuses in much the same way halogen or even incandescent will do.
But I know exactly what you mean by the living room light. And there is just something about the warm glow of incandescent light that just makes me feel good. However, I hear that technology for the LED is moving at light speed, and they are hoping to be able to mimic warm incandescent light with LED in the near future!
We should get your SIL together with my husband. He reads LED lighting and green energy catalogs like its the Sports Illustrated swimsuit addition.
I just close the door and let him have his ‘privacy’.

According to the news, it’s a matter of dispute whether the guy who died had a gun and fired first at the officer. That might be true, since a gun was apparently recovered at the scene.

If I start a gunfight and lose it, I’m not the victim, I’m the would be killer, and loser of the fight.

If I start a ham sandwich, and lose my life, I’m the victim.

We don’t yet know which of these accounts is closer to the truth.

Yes, that’s the best way to handle it. A little “private time.”

A live feed from near the scene of the latest officer-involved shooting in St. Louis, approximately 20 minutes south of Ferguson. Very tense.

And nobody’s ever heard of a cop keeping a drop-gun on hand, just in case.

I’m sure the St Louis police are beyond reproach, we can believe any story they tell, without question.
