Conservative Website Apparently Led to Charlie Grapski’s Hospitalization Against his Will

A conservative website that has taken an extremely pro-cop stance on the Ferguson police shooting of Mike Brown apparently led to Charlie Grapski’s probation officer to revoke his right to leave the state, ultimately leading to police hospitalizing him against his will on Wednesday.

The conversation on The Conservative Treehouse began with forum members discussing ways to jam wifi signals of live streamers covering the protests, but then turned to a discussion of Grapski and his probation status.

Grapski, who is on probation stemming from his 2009 public records investigation of Alachua County officials, had already received permission from his probation officer on Monday.

But on Wednesday, only hours after the conversation on the conservative website where forum members all vowed to call his probation office, he was called back in and told he needed to fill out more paperwork.

thumper787 on Thursday, October 09, 2014 07:49 PM Pacific Report Abuse

I feel we should take color out of it. In this case we have rioters, who seem to be the MAJORITY, who just happen to be black citizens, so how can they be MINORITIES? LE, who I assume are white citizens, in part, would be the minority. The police are peace-keepers, soooo, their job is to suppress the rioters, right? Until force is applied to the rioters, by what ever means, to suppress said insurrection, this will continue. Tear gas, batons, K-9’s on 50’ leads and if necessary, shotgun rounds, birdshot, skipped off the pavement should do the trick. I took excellent care of my take-home, and would be quite disturbed if it was damaged. KICK their ass w/overwhelming force once or twice and they will knock this shit off.

If a Chief or Mayor fails to allow this, arrest them for ‘Interfering/hindering a LEO in the LAWFUL performance of his duties’. Worth a try, my Dept. never let this shit happen, from the Glen Echo Amusement Park riots of the 60’s to tear gassing The County Fair in the 80’s.

Yeah, good going there, Sam. Let these savages destroy city property and endanger the lives of your officers and innocent civilians because you’re afraid of the bad press you’ll get by using the force necessary.

I read your comments where you slammed the Ferguson PD and the St. Louis County PD for the tactics they used in responding to the rioters in Ferguson. You’re nothing but a political coward who is totally unprepared to lead your officers into the war zone your streets have become.

And the worst part is, chiefs like you are no longer the exception; you’re now the rule.

That is why I was so astonished to see that lawyer in DC just calmly tell the officers to leave her handyman alone…GO AWAY NOW…and then get the guy while the officers are sputtering and take him away.

Almost anybody else would have risked serious injury or death…and she likely knew how much potential danger she was in.

Then again, when you read her bio you also see she is one of the top .001% power players and that it would have been a major national incident if the officers had actually touched her.

Eventually, state violence begets violence from the polity. There was this thing called the French Revolution…

In any event, when people are convinced the police are a racket engaged in enemy action as seems to be the mood in Ferguson and St Louis, you will not see normal social restraint working to filter complaints through the approved government channels. People will start to take more…ahem…direct action.

I finally got fed up with his passive-aggressive, RAH RAH GO TEAM GOP shit 2-3 weeks ago when he was attacking Gabby Giffords for having the temerity to call out Martha McSally, a Republican running for her old Congressional seat (you know, the one Giffords had to step down from because she almost got her damn brains completely blown out by a fucking whackjob in public in broad daylight), for not wanting to tighten up the private-party gun sales loopholes and the like, IIRC.

I told him to his face (virtually, of course) to get fucked and that he was on my scrollover list from then on out, because no matter how many times we try to appeal to logic and to his (presumably) better nature, his default always seems to be PARTY UBER ALLES, because of family politics or some other malarkey.

And I admit to have being a tool in the past, and having a relapse into paranoia today.

I actually am fearing for myself over what the nutcases in the Republican party are saying here. Granted, I had a rough week, but still….

Honestly, I get scared too. I’m an atheist with a 2-ton Buddha in the yard, surrounded by the Rapture-ready. I live near a church that literally curses my family in the pews.

The thing is, you have to assay your own fear and not let it control you. I do a lot of self talk, and a lot of conscious exercise of apatheia .

What it comes down to is, yes, there is a basis for concern, but anger and panic won’t help. Calm and attention to detail are the best way to go. Even if shit gets worse, still better to be calm. Anger is a cheap substitute for actual clarity of thought.

ETA: Also, people are not as awful as they seem through the spectrum of politics. Look for the helpers, as Mr. Rogers would say.

And I say all that realizing it’s way easier to say than do. Oh so much. I would say you are trying and succeeding on the basis of your board behavior, so also don’t balance your awareness of error with a tally of your successes…which will feel weird, since “success” in this case has no fanfare.

I’m sick and tired of his craven, cowardly, mindless political shit.

For instance:

Whereas:

That speaks for itself.

So, relevant to the rather irritating experience I had today, apparently Steve Jobs actually fucking said this:

“I’ve never met one of you who didn’t suck. I’ve never known an HR person who had anything but a mediocre mentality.”

It does kind of paint Jobs as somewhat of a dick, inasmuch as he said this directly to someone who was interviewing for a VP of HR position with Apple. Still, it’s true, and sometimes you’ve just got to let that shit fly.

I read Jobs’ biography. He was an absolute dick at times to his friends and colleagues, saying stuff that would get other people a quick poke in the nose. But at other times, when he was not obsessing about one product or another, he could be more human. Those times were rare.

OTOH, I suppose you never had to guess what Jobs was thinking. He told you without dressing it up with fancy wrapping paper and a bow. That’s a rare quality in the business world.

Funny. I see a parallel with Frank Zappa. He was heavily criticized by some of his players (notably Jimmy Carl Black) for his “autocratic” ways. But Frank Zappa still did his thing.

So did Steve Jobs.

Also, they both died of cancer in their 50s. That’s kind of creepy.

Given the choice between a manipulative and secretive boss and a direct and outspoken boss, I’d pick the second one, as long as he or she respects the staff’s abilities. I’ve had both kinds, and the first kind makes you feel as if you’re standing on quicksand. The second kind is no picnic, either, but at least they tell you exactly what’s wrong instead of leaving with a vague sense of impending doom.

Jobs’ stubbornness apparently played a role in his death. He reportedly ignored his doctors’ initial medical advice to attack his cancer with aggressive early treatments, opting instead for some alternative therapies.

According to Steve Jobs’ biographer, Walter Isaacson, the Apple mastermind eventually came to regret the decision he had made years earlier to reject potentially life-saving surgery in favor of alternative treatments like acupuncture, dietary supplements and juices. Though he ultimately embraced the surgery and sought out cutting-edge experimental methods, they were not enough to save him.

Sad really. I don’t care how much of a genius one is, a man’s got to know his limitations.

Malala wins the Nobel Peace Prize. That’s an awesome choice. Here’s what the BBC has on the other winner:

Mr Satyarthi, 60, has maintained the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi and headed various forms of peaceful protests, “focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain,” the committee said.

Sometimes the Nobel committee gets it right. This is one of those years.

A few thoughts on various current debates re.: the relationship between the fundamentalism as such, the religious precepts on which it relies and the social situation in which it grows.

On one hand, the social factors are certainly causal to an extent - I would expect fundamentalism to be more likely among the less educated, thus among the impoverished and dispossessed. E.g. in quite a lot of poor African countries religion finds pretty ugly expressions, be it Islam or Christianity. That, unfortunately, is more or less expected.

On the other hand, it would be hard to argue that particular “commandments” of particular religions don’t play a major role. If the anti-women and anti-gay precepts inherent in the Abrahamic tradition weren’t there, it’s not at all clear that today we would be witnessing public executions of gays in Iran or Malala’s suffering (etc.). It could have still happened, sure, but the probability of it happening would have been different.

When these precepts are (mostly, to some extent or other) overcome (cf. Turkey and Israel), it happens despite religion and due to socio-political factors.

So one could, in principle, differentiate between various religious sets of rules in how they influence this or that situation.

Of course, in order for such a differentiation to work, one should sort out the “religious tradition” from the “folk tradition”. Which can be hard to do, esp. as the former is often but a glorified form of the latter (the difference often lying in whether or not this glorified folk tradition is indigenous). E.g. clearly FGM is not Islamic in the sense that it neither originated with Islam, nor is unique to those demographically Muslim regions where it’s traditionally practiced. Both Christians and Jews in the areas were/are known to practice it. So it’s more of a folk tradition that has been enshrined as religious by some Muslims, but not by the historical Islam as such. It could even be that FGM would continue in a revolutionary-atheistic state, with corresponding “materialistic” excuses for it. One could also remember about the treatment of male homosexuals in USSR (though here the “chicken or egg” problem arises - were the “popular attitudes” such because Russia had previously been an Orthodox state?).

In the end, it makes sense to analyze all factors - social, political, “theological”. There’s a complex interplay and feedback between all of them. Still, recognizing the “theological” factor would mean the acknowledgment that religions do carry with them a no small amount of “garbage” collected throughout the centuries, the “garbage” the modern people could do without. Focusing only on that “garbage” doesn’t amount to some heroic clear-headed analysis. It’s a one-sided, oftentimes bigoted approach. But ignoring it, while concentrating only on the political or social factors won’t do either.

re: #143 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

I see it quite clearly: “The Pursuit of Happiness” as we call it, means that we are free to do whatever we like as long as we do not infringe on the rights of others.

The “religious freedom” factions seems to think that imposing their will on others is some sort of basic right that is being infringed on by things such as contraception, gay marriage, prostitution, gambling or drug use.

For the Colorado Lizards….

The Husband might have a shot at a job in the Denver area. I have no clue about that part of the country and have a couple of questions:

1) Would a salary of between 70-80 K allow for a comfortable life for a family of 3 people (and two pets)? Nothing extravagant, just average middle class stuff.

2) What’s the job market like? My son and I would be looking to find jobs too, after the move is over and the dust has settled a bit. We’d both be “beginners” so to speak, him entering the market as a young adult, me reentering after a 20 yr absence.

3) Are there programs to help with tech school costs? For me and the kid.

4)What about adjusting to the altitude? Any tips?

I know I can find all this on the internet, but hearing it from people who actually live there would be helpful. We’re coming from Atlanta, it’s a big difference in weather (I foresee a visit to REI or somewhere similar if this actually happens), culture, terrain, and who knows what else. TIA.
