I guess it’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of the twisting, turning, constantly surprising and often horrifying plotline of The Walking Dead (I started by reading the graphic novels) so now I will inflict upon you, gentle reader, the first four minutes of tonight’s opening episode of Season 5.

My distaste for the zombie apocalypse genre stems mainly from the uncomfortable overlap it has with RWNJ eschatology.

Even though The Walking Dead is more sophisticated than most in its genre, that isn’t enough to get me interested. No biggie. Tastes differ.

You could say the same thing about “Dawn of the Dead” as well. I tried reading the comic but didn’t see anything particularly interesting to me. I do appreciate that a lot of folks enjoy it but I’d rather kick back with a nice book of liberal theology like Brian Mclaren’s “Generous Orthodoxy”.

I will look forward to hearing how well you folks enjoy the show though.

And speaking of education, I have before lamented about the low language level of so many of our Presidents’ speeches, rarely if ever in the past few years getting above the 10th grade reading level.

Today UPI runs a story about a study released the other day:

Presidential speeches have lowered in sophistication over time

Vocativ recently decided to do a study of the sophistication of presidential speeches, from George Washington to Barack Obama, and found they’ve become less sophisticated over time. They analyzed over 600 speeches using the Flesch-Kincaid readability test, which judges speech by assigning it to a grade level. All of their conclusions were analyzed by former Bill Clinton speech writer Jeff Shesol.

The analysis found that President Obama has raised the bar, in terms of speech, but the gap between him and President Bush is not as wide as many make it out to be.

Shesol wasn’t as concerned by the “dumbing down” of presidential speech as one might think.

“It’s actually a sign of democratization. […]

I disagree with Shesol. I think it is patronizing to think that the majority of people cannot build a vocabulary and language skills needed to discuss complex topics.

But it is work, and laziness exists in mental disciplines as much so as in physical work.

This clown from Texas (one of many) is running for the nomination primarily on one principle: that he’s THE MOST conservative candidate…on everything. More than Paul, Christie, Ryan, Jeb, even Perry. When that’s your plan, facts, data, pragmatism all disappear.

Take whatever he says with a grain of salt. He’s the closest we have in the Senate to a McCarthy: a walking, talking political stunt masquerading as a statesman.

Aside from the racism that’s really behind it, the best way to prevent any kind of abortion remains easily available birth control.

Long term birth control (IUD, Implants, shots, etc) should be free & easily available to anyone who has passed menarche as control of one’s own body leads to strength and freedom. Both of those things will prevent the abuses you’re concerned with.

Which is exactly why the unintended pregnancy rate in most western countries is much lower than ours.

The gop’s plan to ban abortion and make birth control harder to access would be a disaster. Simple math and natural human behavior tell us this, along with reams of data. But when ideology trumps sober public policy, you get trainwrecks borne of rigidity. As in Kansas, where cutting taxes gives the tea party such a boner that no one stops to think about practical concerns like how the hell they’ll be paid for. Say what you want about Democratic overspending; at least they’re not simultaneously calling for massive tax cuts.

It categorically does not bear watching in the US. Selecting sex is one of the worst possible reasons to get an abortion. However, trying to deal with this via an abortion ban is both stupid and indefensible.

Sex selective abortion is already illegal in this country via a federal law that was passed after a bunch of hype over a couple of supposed instances of it occurring.

Cruz is moaning that if the 36 democrats supporting a new bill got their way that would be reversed along with most other state and federal restrictions on abortions. He is using it as a boogeyman since the bill has no widespread support in congress and that isn’t the aim of the bill anyway. It is to roll back all these state laws making abortions harder and harder for women to get.

The current federal law is as easy to get around as just not saying that you are aborting the baby due to its sex. As long as you don’t actually say that your having the procedure because it is a boy or girl and you wanted the other then no one will ever know, will they?

Most of the DVD-players sold in Asia are either region-free, or can be unlocked with a set of keypresses on the remote. And there is an ample supply of bootlegged and pirated DVDs. If people want to watch something, they’ll find a way, no matter how many roadblocks the media companies try to throw up.

I think he is a bit confused by all the “sciency jargon,” while viruses don’t technically meet the definition of “life” they certainly are not dead either.

I watched an interesting YouTube video about Ukrainian brides several weeks ago. On the male side, you’ve got mostly middle-aged or older men who for one reason or another haven’t found a mate in their home country. Some of the men are younger, maybe 30ish. On the female side, you’ve got divorcees, widows and 20ish singles who are fed up with Ukrainian men and want something “better.” There’s also an income disparity. The women were mostly from small towns, where job and dating prospects are limited. For them, hooking up with a foreigner means an escape from their small-town life, better prospects for their future and their kids’ future, as well as (hopefully) a loving, lasting relationship. The men are generally well off enough to pay for a guided tour of Ukrainian brides, and also hope for real love.

The Beeb (if I recall correctly) had a similar report about South American matchmaking tours, with similar demographics. One couple, both in their 40s, ended up getting married.

One of my former co-workers in the States, a roly-poly guy pushing 40, married a Filipina he had met on one of those matchmaking sites. He was happy. She seemed happy. And they had a baby girl together, at last report. The two of them spent several months exchanging emails, and he visited her twice, before they decided to get married. 2. Something that the showrunners mentioned on Talking Dead that I never would have noticed — the first guy to get killed at the trough was the uninfected hippie guy from a couple of seasons ago that Carol and Rick found when they went on a run together and when Rick abandoned Carol.

That hippie guy was played by Robin Lord Taylor, who is now playing Penguin on Gotham.

3. Rick is definitely becoming a lot more bloodthirsty this season. I can’t wait to see where his character goes.

Nikki Haley is seeking her second term after a disastrous first term of ethics questions, purported affairs, a history of very late tax payments as bookkeeper for her family business, a questionable influence-peddling hiring by a local hospital, refusal of major education and stimulus money, refusal to expand Medicaid to a certain class of low wage earners (predicted to kill hundreds a year), the relentless trashing and misinformation campaign of the Affordable Care Act, pushing for vouchers and school choice, a net net loss of funding for public schools in her term and a total indifference to major polluters, (Lord know how many will die as a consequence), exceeded only by her disdain for the black community and, incredibly, women.

South Carolina probably ranks in the bottom five in more categories of quality of life than all but a state or two, nationally. And they are hanging on to number one in men killing women in greater numbers than anywhere else. What a nightmare record to run on. If you’re not a South Carolinian, that is. It’s red meat for the typical Palmetto state voter.

Yes, on November 4th, she’s going to kick her opponent’s hindquarters by a larger margin than the 2010 four percent, when she faced the same State Senator, Vincent Sheheen.

The difference is that the mortality factor isn’t there, and that’s something that can change by mutation. We’ve had years of experience with this kind of change. We have seen this happen.

The fear about Ebola is a change in transmission (from blood/bodily fluids, to airborne), which is something that hasn’t been documented, despite decades of research and understanding about the Ebola virus family.

Good morning. celebrating a bit this morning, tonight is my first photo gig at a pure political event-Fundraiser. An event for the front runner in the race for LA County Sheriff. Not fancy photography by any means, but should be interesting. Really glad we had volunteered at a few events to get some experience at that kind of thing.

Been listening to the Lotus Eaters. It’s wonderfully written, about a photojournalist in Vietnam. Some interesting insights into what people see.

Two things:
1) Abraham is shown coming down off the mountain to the slaves that waited for him - alone. This may be due to a redaction from an earlier version of the story where Issac did not survive or it may well be that he no longer had any trust for his father.

2) It has been also noted by Torah scholars that the bible never depicts Issac and Abraham ever talking to each other again. Even Joseph talked to his brothers who sold him into slavery.

There is considerable psychological subtlety in Genesis…

Objectiveness of morality is unrelated to the existence of God.

Now, I don’t believe objective morality is possible or that it is even a coherent concept - no more so than objectively tasty food. If I were to suddenly acquire faith in God, I still would have no reason to believe in an objective morality. God’s opinion on this issue would still be just his own opinion. Just like God, if he exists, can’t make a food item A objectively tasty (even if he can rig everything so that every living creature will find it tasty). It’s still a matter of pure opinion.

So by saying “our objective morality exists and it is grounded in God” believers merely introduce an unnecessary link into the logical chain (God), without thereby dealing with the problem of how morality can be objective.

But then, an atheist who prefers to believe in an objective morality can simply remove this link and say: “objective morality simply exists, regardless of God”. This claim is no less defensible than that of the theist.

No, it’s not the putting on carefully that is dangerous. It’s taking it off after potential exposures. The slightest deviation or breach of protocol can have fatal results.

With the ongoing crisis, I hope that the designers of these biosafety gear products look at new ways to minimize the chances someone can get accidentally exposed disrobing the gear. Fewer pieces of gear - more seamless gear.

Been slowly scrolling though the Wikipedia list of airshow crashes and incidents.

Lots of low-level failures to account for altitude conditions, wind, and I think partially just old planes failing.

This one I think was the most surprising so far regarding cause:

September 11 - (Mannheim, Germany) - A United States Army CH-47 Chinook (serial number 74-22292) crashed while carrying British, French, and German parachutists who planned to jump when the helicopter reached an altitude of 12,000 ft (3,700 m). All 46 aboard were killed. The crash was later found to be caused by an accumulation of ground walnut shells that had been used to clean the machinery.

You know, if your town “lives for football” then maybe it’s time to develop other hobbies. Also, and I say this as someone married to a former college football player (who lost his scholarship in chemical engineering because of serious injuries and never got to finish school- his family couldn’t afford it), why is so much money in college tied to sports? Shouldn’t there be a lot of other things we could tie it to instead? In state after state, the highest earning state employee is a college football coach, and no one bats an eyelash, but heaven forbid a high school teacher make 50K a year, why that’s criminal.

I was harassed and bullied in high school constantly by football players and cheerleaders. A friend of mine shot herself (and survived) over the bullying and no one did a fucking thing about it. Because they were valuable and the rest of us weren’t. My son went through the same thing. Athletes should be held to a VERY high standard if they’re going to be put on a pedestal, but they aren’t. I blame the adults in charge for this shit, but at a certain point a young adult needs to be held to account too. A town is divided over this? There’s your priorities. I wish people would get that pissed off over homelessness, poverty and violence.
