Dallas Ebola Updates: New Patient Receives Blood Transfusion, Boyfriend Admitted to Hospital (w/ No Symptoms)

The latest on the new case of Ebola
Health • Views: 39,844

You’ve probably heard about the new Ebola patient in Dallas, Nina Pham, a nurse who had extensive close contact with Thomas Eric Duncan (who died of the disease last week). The latest news from WFAA in Dallas is that Pham has now received a blood transfusion from an Ebola survivor who has not been identified.

Father Jim Khoi, pastor to Dallas Ebola patient Nina Pham, says she has received a blood transfusion from an Ebola survivor. The identity of that survivor was not given. Khoi said Pham is in good spirits, using Skype to communicate with her mother, and asking for prayers.

Also, a person who works at eye care product company Alcon has been admitted to Texas Presbyterian Hospital, after being identified as having been in contact with Ms Pham. I’ve seen unconfirmed reports that this is Pham’s boyfriend, but according to the statement from Alcon he is not showing any symptoms of Ebola at this time; they’re just taking the necessary precautions.

Alcon, the global eye care products company, confirmed that one of its associates was admitted to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas on Sunday to be monitored for potential signs and symptoms of the Ebola virus. The associate — whose name was not released — was said to have been “in contact” with hospital nurse Nina Pham, who was diagnosed with Ebola over the weekend. “The Alcon associate has not shown any signs or symptoms of the Ebola virus,” a statement issued by the company said, adding that it is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Texas State Health Services to ensure that “proper public health measures” are being followed.

UPDATE at 10/13/14 5:40:57 pm by Charles Johnson

The source of the blood transfusion has now been identified:

Sources close to Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly tell ABC News that Brantly donated his blood Sunday for a transfusion to Dallas Ebola patient Nina Pham.

UPDATE at 10/13/14 5:51:09 pm by Charles Johnson

And once again, Chuck C. Johnson is reporting incorrect information he got from rumors on Twitter:

I wish there was a way that if someone lied that much, their Internet speed would gradually diminish. UpChuck would be working on 1400 baud speed by now - maybe lower.

Alcon, the folks that make all of the contact lens storage/cleaning solution for the entire planet. That shouldn’t spark any undue fears or panic.

Did the associate have anything to do with manufacturing Alcon products? If it turns out that he does have Ebola, was it at the stage where it was transmissible? I think I’ll wait awhile before wetting my pants.

If he was not showing any symptoms, it was not contagious or transmissible.

I have the pleasure to do some business with Alcon in Ft. Worth and you will never come across a bunch of folks who follow every safety/cleanliness manual to the letter as them. They could be breeding Ebola next door and I’d still have total faith in any Alcon product.

Microsoft’s Tony Prophet on why they skipped Windows 9 for Windows 10: ‘It came and it went’

When Microsoft announced Windows 10 on September 30th, everyone’s jaw literally dropped. We were all expecting Microsoft to unveil Windows 9. Even members of our news team were in shock that Microsoft skipped a version number — It simply was not expected.

So what happened? Well, according to Microsoft’s marketing boss for Windows, Tony Prophet, “it came and it went.” That is literally the answer we are getting for why Microsoft skipped Windows 9 in favor of Windows 10.

Here is what Prophet had to say further during the Dreamforce conference in San Francisco: “Windows 10 is not going to be an incremental step from Window 8.1,” he explained. “Windows 10 is going to be a material step. We’re trying to create one platform, one eco-system that unites as many of the devices from the small embedded Internet of Things, through tablets, through phones, through PCs and, ultimately, into the Xbox.”

Teaching Indian History

Re “False teachings for India’s youth” (Editorial, Oct. 9): Societies view history through their own cultural prism. It should not be a matter of surprise or concern to your editorial writer that Indian history textbooks are written and history is taught in the Indian cultural context. The left-leaning Congress Party systematically trivialized Indian history and achievements, preferring instead to propagate the Western view of India. Today’s government is, instead, encouraging the Indian view of Indian history to be taught in schools. Is it wrong that they did not ask Western historians for permission? It is, after all, a matter for Indian historians to debate the right and wrong of it. A society that believes in and teaches its students creationism is hardly well placed to criticize one that teaches about automated conveyances, aircraft and nuclear weapons, all of which are mentioned in one form or another in ancient Indian texts.

Home schooling hell down under:

Jennifer* is a mother of two, in her early thirties, with a bachelor’s degree. She lives a 13-hour flight away from her parents, and has not communicated with them properly in years. But she is still utterly, acutely terrified of them. Staunch fundamentalist Christians, they homeschooled her in rural New South Wales for most of her school-aged years. She suffered extraordinarily at their hands.

“My dad didn’t want me going to school and he said it was because he was afraid that I would tell teachers ‘lies’ about what was happening at home and that they’d see the bruises on me and report him,” she says. We are talking via Facebook chat - any other medium would be too intimate.

“He beat us a lot. He called it spanking but he used electrical cords, canes. […]

The abuse Jennifer suffered also went beyond the physical. Her education was extremely strictly-controlled and her access to the outside, secular world was limited. Science was limited to Creationism. The “ungodly” texts of Harry Potter and Sesame Street were banned.

Despite regaining control over her life by moving overseas, creating a family of her own, and learning via TAFE, university and now online courses, Jennifer says she still harbours anger and sadness over her homeschooling experience.

[…]

One of the benefits of a public school, with well trained teachers and staff, is that children in violent and destructive families can be reached and helped.

Yeah mebbe. OTOH since he keeps getting suspended for the exact same behavior, and keeps making his scorn for the rules clear when he’s let back, as he’s done, they will eventually make the ban permanent. Even @support ‘s patience has limits. Starting up a new Twitter account will be a huge blow to him, if only psychologically. He’ll have to start up with zero followers again, putting him back to square one in his self declared rivalry with @Green_Footballs .

The encouraging thing is that despite Twitter’s insistence in their automated response to reports of rules violations that it only reviews reports from those directly involved or their authorized representatives, the truth is obviously different. If enough people complain about a clear, fucked up violation like Chuck’s repeatedly committed, they do notice and take action. Twitter may have a horrible track record in dealing with abusive shitlords like CCJ, but this kind of action is a hopeful sign.

Good grief. Now the ebola problem is being blamed on … spending too much money on addressing climate change.

War hawk William O’Keefe, head of the George C. Marshall think tank propaganda machine, which was created to sing the glories of the non-existent SDI of Reagan, and late found a second life spreading lies about climate change, writes this in The Hill:

Ebola outbreak partly fueled by misguided priorities and misallocated resources

It’s all baloney, but he doesn’t care, he’s paid to produce it, and paid well by Scaife and others of that ilk.

Twitters tolerance of abject hate speech is really wearing thin. I’m not exactly sure what they’re afraid of, do they really think the racists and 100% free speech fanatics are going to create a viable competitor and steal their market share? Libertarian dudebros talk a good game, but at the end of the day nobody of consequences is going to boycott Twitter because a bunch of trolls got banned.

I suspect that George C. Marshall is pissed about having his name attached to this fine group of pseudo-intellectual fuckwads.

Moderation is work and they don’t want to do it since it doesn’t generate eyeballs and advertising revenue.

Isn’t Scaife dead? And I don’t know who got control of the estate after him. Though I guess the will could have left funds for the various nut groups to live off for a while.

Why not tweet back that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and that the NIH should have been funded better so that they could have been researching vaccines that work for both conservatives *and* liberals.

And he’ll be back soon enough too, again claiming victimhood status even though his Twitter TOS infractions are piling up.

Of course, right wingers and CCJ will ignore the TOS violations and instead celebrate his inane and insane posts that attack victims, and whose principal motivation is to smear - not to reveal new and insightful information.

Seen on Facebook recently.

“Why are these old bands doing covers of Glee songs?”

It was a running gag with the local DJ on the AFN station in Frankfurt, I would call in and request an “oldie” from the 60’s or 70’s, she would explain that her format was only 80’s and 90’s music, so I would request the modern cover.

One dollar invested in health care in Africa could have save us thousands in treatment and prevention here, but that would have involved giving FREE STUFF to dark-skinned people…
