Dallas Ebola Updates: First Duncan Contact Cleared, Other Quarantined Contacts Show No Symptoms

An outbreak of good news
Health • Views: 29,414
Ebola patient Nina Pham with her dog, Bentley

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports today that the first person known to have contact with Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan has now been cleared, and at least 46 other quarantined people who had contact with Duncan are also not showing any signs of the virus and are expected to be cleared by tomorrow.

Also, Duncan’s fiancee Louise Troh, who probably had closer contact with him than anyone in the days before he was hospitalized, is also symptom-free and expected to be out of quarantine tomorrow.

Nina Pham, the nurse who did contract the virus after being in close contact with Duncan when he was at his most infectious, is stable and in fair condition at a bio-containment facility in Maryland, and is expected to make a full recovery.

UPDATE at 10/19/14 1:35:10 pm by Charles Johnson

And in more good news, the healthcare worker aboard a Carnival Cruise Lines ship that was denied entrance to Belize this week has also tested negative for Ebola.

A healthcare worker who had self-quarantined herself aboard a Carnival Cruise Lines ship has tested negative for Ebola and was allowed to disembark with the rest of the passengers in Galveston, Texas, on Sunday.

In a statement, the Galveston County Health Authority said it had determined “there is no evidence of a public health threat to cruise passengers or to Galveston county.”

But…but…my epidemic! What about my apocalyptic epidemic?! God dammit, this is just like Obama! Just like the time he led Putin cripple Russia with its own sanctions instead of going to war over Ukraine! Just like the time he ordered the strike on Osama bin Laden to make the Republicans look bad! When are we going to impeach, America?!

6 Vogon Poetry  Oct 19, 2014 1:31:31pm

At the same time, the Spanish nurse who became the first person outside of West Africa to get the disease from contact with another patient has now been cleared of having the disease in preliminary tests (more will confirm that she’s disease free).

If the disease was as easy to get as the airborne nutters say it is, we’d have a whole lot more people with the disease, and it’s simply not happening that way.

But somehow Obama botched this whole thing? Really?

The hospital’s infection control protocols were faulty, the hospital has already admitted faults were involved on their end. That’s not on Obama. The calls for travel bans are inane and are, at its base, racist. Because when you call for a ban from places where the infection is going, that would include Texas and Spain, but no one is talking travel bans from Dallas DFW.

7 PhillyPretzel  Oct 19, 2014 1:31:42pm

I am thankful and happy to hear this bit of good news. Now if only the rest of the press would shut the heck up.

8 Vogon Poetry  Oct 19, 2014 1:34:50pm

Oh, and the lab tech on board that Carnival Cruise ship has been cleared as well. The overreaction of Belize and Mexico fits right in with the misinformation and fear and hysteria that are accompanying this disease when the focus must be on getting aid to where the outbreak is actually still going strong - in West Africa, where the spread is occurring due to the lack of a functioning health care system - one that was in bad shape before the outbreak, but which is barely hanging on because of groups like MSF/DWB. It’s taking far too long for even the growing contingent of military forces (US, UK, and FRA) that are aiding in training and building new facilities (which still aren’t going fast enough).

You’re not exaggerating by much. The latest freeper meme is that the evil Kenyan mastermind and incompetent uspurper, B. Hussein Obama, is actually behind the effort to have Darrin Wilson cleared by the grand jury. The motive, according to the freepers, is that the resulting riots would somehow benefit the Democrats in the upcoming election.

12 Shiplord Kirel  Oct 19, 2014 1:42:55pm

It’s just like the diabolically clever but utterly inept B. Hussein OBOLA to bring out super-sekrit alien tech and stamp out ebola now, so he can hide just how filthy and degenerate his fellow Africans really are. He probably wants to keep it in reserve until 2016 so he can turn it loose, declare Marshall Dillon law and get a third term. He can then complete his evil plan to institute Shakira law and force us all to dance to his evil Muslim tune!

Is that the PRIMARY plan, or the FALLBACK plan. I thought that the plan was that Ebola (brought in because Obama’s loyalties lie with Africa and not America) would be used to cancel the election and declare martial law. Then the DOH SWAT Teams would show up to gather up conservatives off to the camps. //everyone of those statements was pulled of of RightWingWatch over the last week or so.

It does make me wonder just how many Black men Wilson has arrested, and how much he fears going to jail himself. I’ve worried all along that prosecutors wouldn’t be willing to charge him with anything.

MO is already preparing for riots, doncha know, and even though the majority of protesters are peaceful, there are always a few hotheads, which will give the authorities reason to say, “We told you so.”

Just got back from an afternoon refreshing beverage at Parkway Brewery, and have to say we were partially witness to an amazing thing: two ladies were hosting a party to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their commitment ceremony. We didn’t want to hang out too long because we were not acquainted with the couple or any of their guests, but did wish them a happy anniversary before we left. As we were chatting, I asked them if they had plans to marry since Virginia has finally legalized same sex marriage, and Alice ( 1/2 of the couple, Alice and Margaret) said that they were actually going to get married there in about 1/2 an hour, bit that it was going to be a surprise to their guests….
I hope you will all raise a glass, mug or paw to them as they embark on their next 25 years!

For 21 days, we’ve had crazed conspiracy theorists and dour-looking “experts” aplenty telling us that the CDC was lying about how contagious Ebola is, that it is much easier to contract than the experts have stated and that it might even be airborne because it was moving too fast in Africa for the method of transmission accepted as the only one.

21 days later, over 90% of those who came into contact with Duncan during the period between when he became contagious and when he was placed into isolation have been symptom-free and on the cusp of being cleared.

Thus once again proving that the threat posed by a deadly virus reaching America is inversely proportional to the shitstorm it creates in the press.

Online ordering is the cutting edge of idiocracy in this country. I ordered an item from WalMart recently under their “site to store” program; ie they ship it to the store and you pick it up there. This eliminates the shipping charge. They shipped it to a store 30 miles away rather than the one I specified. In classic, righteous, can’t-make-this-shit-up idiocrat fashion, the explanation I got was, “Well, if they don’t have it there (the store indicated on the order), they send the order to the next nearest store,” even though they had to ship it to either store!
I just stared for a second, said “thank you” and went on my way. I knew that pointing out the absurdity would be like debating monetary policy with a baboon or evolution with a creationist.

It could have been a lot worse, given that most hospitals are really not equipped to treat, or even up on the protocol, of Ebola. And hospitals in the US are privately owned, for the most part.

The corporation that owns Texas Health Presbyterian, for instance, with 25 facilities in the US, could have done much, much better, given the billions of dollars in profit they showed in 2013.

Had one of those moments the other day at the local Walfart. I’d checked the price online at walfart dot com for a package of two disposable fire extinguishers. I get to the local store and find they’re half again more expensive. I go “What?” to the clerk at the service desk and she says they aren’t allowed to match prices on their own website. Now if I’d found the same price at the web site of the local farm supply chain, good to go. But not their own company web site??? I really wish there was a better alternative up here in the northwoods…

So true. As much as I would prefer to avoid WalMart, around here it’s pretty hard to do unless I want to drive all the way to another town, which I usually don’t want to do. But we do have a choice of grocery stores, so there’s that.

Benefits Questioned in Tax Breaks for Nonprofit Hospitals

Hospitals, among the largest landowners in many communities, are often designated as nonprofits, allowing them to benefit from state and federal tax breaks for providing “charity care and community benefit.” The exemptions collectively amount to more than $12 billion annually, health economists say.

Now, provisions of the Affordable Care Act, along with Internal Revenue Service reporting requirements imposed in recent years, are revealing how much medical centers give back to their communities. And many health experts have found them wanting.

“You should get close to the value of tax exemption in community benefit,” said Paula Song, professor of health services organization at Ohio State University. “I think you’ll find most hospitals aren’t providing that.”

A study this year in The New England Journal of Medicine found that hospitals spent an average of 7.5 percent of their operating costs on charity care and community benefit, based on filings the I.R.S. has required only since 2009. Some spent under 1 percent and others about 20 percent.

A motorcycle reportedly featured in the film ‘Easy Rider’ has been sold for what auctioneers say was $1.35 million.
The Profiles in History auction house did not identify the buyer with Saturday night’s winning bid for the “Captain America” red, white and blue, chromed-out chopper.
Spokeswoman Sabrina Propper said bidding was fierce for the Harley-Davidson that the house said was ridden by Peter Fonda in the 1969 counterculture cult movie.

More than a bit of controversy on the whole thing. It has a couple of certificates of authenticity, including one by Dan Haggerty (yes, that Dan Haggerty) who restored it, said it it was the only surviving bike.

Problem is, Dan has also authenticated another one he restored as the ‘only surviving bike’ for another collector. Now Haggerty is saying that the one that just sold is authentic. Hate to be him right now….
