In Which I Rant About America’s Totally Dysfunctional Gun Culture

Via TPM: CNN Host Grills Cruz About Ebola and GOP Opposition to Surgeon General (VIDEO)

Ted Cruz calling blocked Surgeon General nominee Dr. Vivek Murthy an “anti-gun activist” is incredibly dishonest. Murthy advocates very minimal restrictions on guns because guns are used in more than 300,000 violent crimes against American citizens every single year. Murthy sees that as a public health problem, and he’s NOT WRONG. It is.

The fact is, looking at this as a public health issue is absolutely appropriate, and not “extreme” at all. The Republican Party and their NRA cohorts have pushed the debate about guns so far to the right, it’s utter insanity at this point. A nominee for Surgeon General proposes simple common sense measures to address the gun violence problem, and the right freaks out and blocks his nomination at a time when we need a strong voice for public health more than ever. It’s sick. Deeply sick.

This shit makes me crazy. America is incredibly dysfunctional on the gun issue and people are dying every day because we won’t face the monster we’ve created.

Why the NRA Is Blocking Obama’s Surgeon General Nominee | BillMoyers.com

The post of the surgeon general has been vacant since July and it looks likely to remain that way for some time thanks to a strident campaign led by the National Rifle Association and libertarian Senator Rand Paul against President Obama’s nominee, Dr. Vivek Murthy.

Murthy has medical and business degrees from Yale, works as an attending physician and instructor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School and has founded several health businesses and nonprofits. He has also expressed support for limited gun safety measures like a ban on assault weapons, mandatory safety training and limits on ammunition and so the NRA has declared it will “score” his confirmation vote, putting pressure on Senate Democrats running tight re-election races in red states to block Murthy’s confirmation. As The New York Times reported, the White House is “recalibrating” its strategy towards Murthy’s nomination, meaning the Senate vote will either be delayed or never happen.

This isn’t the first time the NRA has held up a nominee: the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives went without a director for seven years because of opposition from the gun lobby. But never before has the group set itself so strongly against a surgeon general nominee. So why now? The NRA said Murthy’s “blatant activism on behalf of gun control” attracted their attention.

But the gun lobby’s campaign against Murthy isn’t really about his record, or him at all. His positions on guns are hardly radical or even activist and his views are consistent with those of the majority of Americans. Polling indicates that the public is far more supportive of new gun control laws than members of Congress or, certainly, the NRA.

keep in mind that the rules were changed to allow confirmations with a straight majority. It is completely fair to blame the NRA, but there are ~10 democrats who are also holding up this nomination.

And that’s what it really comes down to, the NRA can’t have a high-placed government official like the Surgeon General calling attention to the level of gun violence in this country.

Yes, because they are from red states, so they’re terrified of the NRA’s influence and don’t want to oppose the NRA because they won’t be reelected. In other words, these Democrats are cowards.

No, the filibuster exists for high-level appointments. I’m not sure if the Surgeon General qualifies, but if it does, then even with all Democrats supporting this nomination, they’d still need Republican votes to break a filibuster.

I don’t think anybody even knows or cares whether female soccer players are killing themselves. As far as the NFL players’ suit, I think it’s disingenuous on one hand because I think the players reps knew just as much as the league did, however, the suit is necessary because the league did not step up to the plate to share in the burden of caring and compensation. Why the union can’t work these details into the CBA, I don’t understand. I wouldn’t hate the sport because the league is corrupt. Sounds like you didn’t like the sport anyway and were looking for a reason.

80 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce  Oct 19, 2014 7:58:10pm

I was once upon a time very much a firearms enthusiast. The main reason I am not currently as enthusiastic as I once was is because indulging in that particular hobby requires more time and money than I am now willing to spend on it. I haven’t developed any particular distaste, revulsion, or fear of the ownership and/or use of firearms.

What I *have* developed in recent years is a significant distaste, revulsion, and even fear of what I’ll reluctantly call “gun culture”.

My experience with guns as a kid in Texas during the 1980s involved a lot of extremely stern and vehement reinforcement of the rules: A gun is not a toy, and it is to be treated with the utmost seriousness. All guns are always loaded. Never allow a gun to point at anything you don’t intend to destroy. Be certain of your target and what lies beyond it. Keep your booger hook away from the bang switch until you are ready to destroy the thing you’re aiming at.

These were not “guidelines” or “suggestions”. They were The Fucking Law. If you broke The Fucking Law, you would not be allowed to join in any firearms-oriented reindeer games for quite some time. After breaking The Fucking Law as a kid, it took quite a bit of penance to prove you were worthy of another chance to get it right.

It went without saying that part of being a responsible and respectable gun owner meant that you did not parade your guns around in public. If you were going hunting or going plinking on the range, it was very much expected that your firearms went from your front door to the trunk of your car, preferably in a carrying case, with no fanfare. It was all business.

I can’t identify when or how, but at some point in recent history “gun ownership” became an element of identity construction. It suddenly became taken as a given that:

1) all gun owners are “conservatives”;
2) all “conservatives” are gun owners;
3) all “liberals” oppose private ownership of guns
4) everyone who opposes private ownership of guns is a “liberal”

and battle lines have been drawn up accordingly, despite none of those assumptions being factually correct.

Uhh, where was I going with this? Oh, never mind.

Wanting a sport to die and wanting to ban said sport are two completely different things. But okay! I’m done with you tonight. I hope your sports ball team scored more points against the other sports ball team they were playing.

Cheers!

re: #80 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

I’m not a gun owner, and never was. Neither were my father and grandfather. But I can understand everything you say here. Guns have progressively become less a tool for doing something (hunting, target practice, self-defense(?)) and more a symbol of a warped mentality. It began before Obama took office, but since then it has really ramped up, as otherwise normal people have been absorbed into the “Red Dawn,” Stormfront and survivalist movements. Now, owning a gun and parading it around means you are a True American™, ready to defend yourself, your family and the nation at any moment from … something.

There is no other developed country I can think of that would tolerate, or even find acceptable, this kind of behavior.

Funny thing about Canadian money. I find their dimes to be very shiny. I carry a bunch in my golf bag because they really catch the sun. I actually carry coins from all over the world in my bag. I figure if I get stuck anywhere I can always get a piece of gum.

99 Eclectic Cyborg  Oct 19, 2014 8:26:28pm

On another related note, it was interesting on my trip to hear a discussion on guns from my southern, very pro-gun American wife and my longtime very anti-gun Canadian friend. It was a calm, rational discussion thank goodness.

My opinion on guns is largely unchanged. I think everyone who buys one should be required to take a basic safety course. I think everyone who gets a CCW should be required to get additional training. It takes more than good aim to do the right thing in a survival situation.

I support the right of the American people to own guns, to hunt and to shoot them for sport. Heck, I love target shooting when I find time to do it. But I also think that we need to recognize that guns ARE dangerous and we need to take some common sense measures to try and limit the risks as much as possible.

There IS a “well regulated militia” part in the 2nd amendment. The Founders could have just said “militia”, but they added “well regulated” because they understood even back then that it’s not a good idea to flippantly screw around with dangerous weapons.

You are right about that. Canadian dimes are I believe slightly thinner than U.S. dimes and the design is much less intricate.

101 teleskiguy  Oct 19, 2014 8:27:47pm

I’m a gun owner and everything in negativ’s #80 rings too true for me. Gun ownership has evolved into a political identity in of itself and the guns themselves are used as props and are not thought of as the tools of death that they are.

Anybody who feels they need to walk around the grocery store with a semi-automatic long rifle with a 30 round magazine slung around their shoulders would be harshly ridiculed or worse, arrested, in every first world country — except the United States.

I’ve said it before here, I’ll say it again; the second amendment is antiquated and its words have been twisted and distorted beyond any logical comprehension.

102 SteveMcGazi  Oct 19, 2014 8:29:35pm

There are also some oddities about money. The Egyptian pound coin looks a little like a Euro coin at least to a novice. It must be expensive to mint with a dark metal center and a light colored rim. You don’t play heads or tails, you play heads or swords. (One side has the Sphinx, the other a sword). Also it is covered with Arabic (I think) writing, but has one thing written in roman characters (it’s out in the car and I forget whether it’s the year of if it says One Pound). Another one is a 5 (cent?) piece from China which has a great big 5 on it. Why? Are there that many tourists compared to its billion plus citizens?

American Football is bloodsport, a meatgrinder.

Some rule changes for American football (with thanks and apologies to the late George Carlin):

1. Let the whole team play. What’s all this standing around on the sideline, get in there and hurt somebody!

2. Gasoline fires at random yard lines on the sideline, also a pair of randomly placed (non-lethal) land mines in the gridiron.

3. Any and all drugs allowed for consumption by players.

4. For playoff games, a hungry lion will be loosed on the gridiron during the two minute warning.

5. The loser of the Super Bowl, the head coach of the losing team will be executed on live TV after the game.

We need to get serious about this! Our stadium spectacles have got nothing on Ancient Rome!

Chinese coinage

They all have big numbers on them to speed identification, I guess. The smaller coins are “jiao” denominations = 1/10 and 5/10 yuan. The larger “1” coin on the right is a 1 yuan coin. The “1” coin on the left with the fancy edging is an old style 1 jiao coin.

They also have paper equivalents for the coinage.

Maybe an image from your youth. Anyway, like I said, play with it a bit. It’s a start and you don’t have to marry it. I guess I would describe the process like this: On a piece of paper draw a line across then sketch the outline of a car. then add a little bit of this and a little bit of that and next thing you know, you’ve made your own little piece of art. Take something out, put something in, change something. You’ll enjoy yourself and have something to show for it that is truly yours.

I don’t doubt it. Making the Chinese character for 4 requires 5 strokes. After 30 years of dealing with the rest of the world, China is slowing moving over to Arabic numerals.

So I’ve been watching the new showtime show, “The Affair”…

only spoilery for the basic premise, but I’ll put it behind a tag anyway:

The story is trite (wealthy mid-life crisis guy, working-class grieving woman, both married, summer fling), but I love the structure of it — framing device of sitting in an interrogation room talking to a cop, and each chapter is told twice, first from his point of view then from hers. It’s hard to tell if their memories are really that drastically different, or if one of them is lying, and trying to figure that out is much more interesting than the actual affair.

Well I’ve just completed a two week journey through my former homes in Canada and a good number of eastern and midwestern states.

That means it’s picture time!

This is the exterior of where we stayed in Pittsburgh, the Omni William Penn, got about 70% off on the stay thanks to Hotwire

Last I was at the Omni, I remember they had some slow ass elevators.

Oh god, don’t get me started on the Gamergate clusterfuck. #NotYourShield

If you ever wanted to see a more corrupt media than even Fox News, look no further than to your local video game website or magazine. And holy shit, they either are absolutely terrified or absolutely hate their own readers — it’s frightening. But they’re also quite organized — they all swarmed to put up hit pieces on their own readership en mass when this whole mess broke. Last I heard it was traced to a Google+ group where they were breaking NDAs and conspiring to make sure certain games / publishers got a certain average score.

And of course you have a special class of single issue wonk trolls mixed in the whole mess — the social justice warriors (SJWs) who claim to support various causes (feminism, gay rights, etc) but either are absolutely batshit in their devotion to them, or really just enjoy inciting flame wars.

To wit: I’ve been accused of either “metaphorical rape” or supporting “rape culture” (the message from the SJW could be read both ways) because I have a poster of the award winning Pink Floyd “Back Catalogue” advertisement by Tony May and Phyllis Cohen on my wall - there’s nudity on it, ergo rape. Or something. I was too busy trying to find my eyeballs, as I had rolled them so hard I lost them momentarily.

re: #180 KiTA

This is the best explanation of the issue I’ve seen. Most of the people who earnestly think #GamerGate is a legit cause don’t see or have a problem with the actual problematic cozy corporate relationships and simplistic ratings schemes that have been a part of gaming journalism for decades. They have a problem with women and indie friendly game reviewers writing reviews that reflect their non-mainstream tastes and preferences.

I’m just using it as an opportunity to poke fun at toolbags who are getting all worked up about women posting opinions.

I found this was a good take on it (yours is good too):

techcrunch.com

From a person with a BA in History and Politics, he points out that basically at it’s heart Gamergate is politics breaking into the already explosive culture of gaming. He goes into some pretty good details, and even covers 4chan in an honest way, rather than playing them up as some sort of cult of cartoonish supervillains that the SJWs have been trying to do lately.

187 goddamnedfrank  Oct 20, 2014 2:29:29am

Let’s for a second take the claim that #gamergate “is about ethics in gaming journalism” seriously, at face value. That’s kind of pathetic, right? I mean we’re talking about game reviews, and like movie or any other kind of art reviews that’s a pretty inherently subjective thing. Getting worked up about developers and writers being in bed with each other is lame, it happens, it’s totes fucking ubiquitous. It’s the state of play in the Automobile press, Audiophile mags, Sports coverage, goddamned everywhere. So it wears thin people acting surprised, or pretending that true objectivity is even possible when you’re doing something as meta as writing about media content.

This ain’t Consumer Reports, which presents quantitative data about consoles but tellingly doesn’t touch games because everybody already knows why. If you don’t like the opinions of SJW’s (and seriously, how dismissive is that term) then tune them the fuck out. The individual members of the gaming press, like everybody, have both opinions and assholes. That’s not a scandal.

re: #185 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator

Yeah, like I said, it’s a really weird place. Basically the main character is being accused of being a 550 year old Hiter-like analogue, which was bad enough in the abstract, but apparently his crime was to set off a nuclear war that killed 2 billion people by intentionally nuking Islamic holy sites to “Destroy” the religion — with Israeli nukes, apparently. And they’re going into really ugly detail about it.

The whole thing makes me really uncomfortable to read, but I actually think that’s 100% intentional — it’s exposing what exactly the Gellers of the world are preaching for exactly what it is.

198 A Mom Anon  Oct 20, 2014 4:33:33am

You know, you’d think that seeing a bunch of little kids murdered at school FFS would have made it somewhat possible to have a rational discussion about guns. Nope. I really don’t get it. The discussion always becomes the gun owners telling me I just don’t understand, that I want to ban all weapons, that I am somehow un American. The group Moms Demand Action gets rape and death threats and followed around by open carry jerks for wanting some damned enforced laws in place. And I’m being unreasonable? Is life without a gun plastered to your side so unimaginable? Where the fuck do you live?

I know there are responsible people who own guns. They lock them up when not in use, store them unloaded but treat them as loaded at all times, etc. I hear it from people who want to make sure everyone knows they’re the responsible ones. I get it. But you know, just as many people are not responsible, not trained, not even motivated to be either of those things. It should be harder to get a gun and operate one than it is to legally drive a car. You should have to be licensed and insured, pass a test, go to classes. I don’t give a shit if it costs more. So what? And also, if you want to operate the same weapons as the military has, JOIN THE MILITARY. Otherwise, no, you shouldn’t have access to that stuff. Too many fools who think they’re Barney Badass have access to this crap already, it’s enough.

I belong to a yard sale/personal sale group on Facebook. You can find guns there. The last ad was an AK with everything you could need to go out and do some damage, tons of ammo, scope etc. (the seller’s words, not mine). So for 1500 dollars, anyone can go to the local grocery store parking lot and meet with a guy buy all that crap and it’s all perfectly legal. No questions asked. And that particular grocery store chain allows open carry of any firearm, so you could buy that package of stuff and then walk right into that store. How is that OK? That is not right, and it’s not some infringement on your special little self to have to go through a proper procedure to buy an item that at it’s heart is specifically designed to kill. And spare me the target practice argument, guns were invented/ designed to kill, period. It’s what they’re truly made to do, period.

A Texas Militiaman Reconsiders the Mission

Texas Border Volunteers is run by Mike and Linda Vickers. The couple owns a 1,000-acre ranch in central Brooks County, which serves as a base of operations for their activities. Mike Vickers is a veterinarian who has considerable sway in Brooks County and the ear of influential Republicans, including Gov. Rick Perry, Congressman Michael McCaul, the chair of House Homeland Security, and DPS Director Steve McCraw. Dr. Vickers travels around the state addressing conservative groups about the crisis at the border. Access to the vast private ranchlands of Brooks County is often coordinated by Vickers, who’s a go-to source for reporters from around the world seeking information on illegal immigration in South Texas. The Vickers founded the group in 2006, spun off from the Minutemen, the controversial border-watchers that imploded years ago in an orgy of in-fighting and violence. Texas Border Volunteers claims to have some 300 recruits. Dr. Vickers presents a more moderate image than some of the other, cruder militiamen running around in South Texas. In public presentations and in the media, the Vickers typically describe what the Border Volunteers do as “observe and report”—they use their expertise of the rough terrain of Brooks County’s ranches to patrol for undocumented immigrants and then call Border Patrol to pick them up. On TBV’s website, the group describes its mission as “assisting law enforcement officials with securing the border, upholding the rule of law and educating the general public with regard to immigration issues.” It all sounded pretty good to Gilbert.

Eventually, Gilbert became one of the core members of the Texas Border Volunteers, serving on the board and helping to supervise new recruits. He appears in an agit-prop documentary, They Come to America II: The Cost of Amnesty, explaining to the filmmaker, regular Fox News guest Dennis Michael Lynch, how emergency distress beacons and five-gallon water containers for languishing immigrants come “courtesy of the United States government.”

I’ve been to Pentecostal services (under protest, but family stuff, y’know). People there get really weird and crazy, babble lots of nonsense syllables, and someone with the “gift of interpretation” translates the gibberish into a message. And it is gibberish. If it were a real tongue — as in a language — it would have some structure and order. There is none. So, you’ve got one person spewing nonsense syllables and another inventing a message out of thin air, supposedly with the help of the Holy Spirit.

So, yeah, mainstream Christians think speaking in tongues is wrong and “not for today” or any day.

A god, or demigod, is just not worth his salt until he can make a dead man walk again.

Come to think of it, I can’t remember if any of the Greek gods successfully revived a dead person. IIRC, either they stayed in Hades or got turned into a constellation if they were really special. If the early Christians were trying to outdo the pagan gods, making the dead walk would be a winner.

Persephone let Sisyphus escape Hades after death. Actually he tricked her into letting him out. That’s how the Greeks did it, it generally wasn’t a resurrection per se, but a return from the Underworld. I don’t think they got into the mechanics of how that worked with the corpse and all.

My take on America’s gun problem? It ties into the fact that America is still, essentially, a religious nation. And too often America itself is the religion.

It’s the religion people were raised in. It’s the religion they have always known. It’s the religion that gives shape, direction and meaning to their lives. It’s the religion that protects them from evil.

In that religion firearms, as I’ve mentioned before, are a holy icon. The equivalent of a crucifix or a menorah. Use of them is a sacred ritual and a sacred duty. If people die it is because the religion dictates they must die. Like the Aztec religion the American religion (as opposed to the American nation) demands blood to maintain the order of the universe.

Such a simplistic and bloodthirsty religion is a wonderful thing for two types of people: con artists and fanatics. The former because wrapping something in religion makes it nearly impossible for believers to see through the bullshit and the believers give money and power to the con artists. The latter because religion is often a perfect excuse to be nasty assholes to other human beings. The American religion is better suited than most to both types as it is a rather nebulous concept with little real theological thought occurring inside it.

Until America becomes just a nation its gun problem will continue.

This view is undoubtedly coloured by my agnosticism, but there it is.

Geography isn’t Americans’ strongest suit, and once again fear and hysteria trump facts.

Banning Africans from entering schools isn’t prudent, let alone necessary. These people have nothing to do with the outbreak; it’s like warning that someone from California must have been affected by Hurricane Sandy, because it happened on the same continent.

This is fear and hysteria fueled by more than a wee bit of racism/xenophobia. Plain and simple.

And asshats like Ted Cruz spread this noxious nonsense even though there’s no new cases among the dozens who were exposed by Duncan prior to entering the hospital. And the only other two cases were nurses who treated Duncan. As each day passes, the numbers of people who are cleared from voluntary or mandatory quarantines increases - because the disease isn’t that easy to get unless you’re coming into direct contact.

But Cruz and right wingers keep spinning this as some kind of huge crisis or failure for the Obama administration when it’s been anything but. There are three cases total from the Duncan infection.

And two of those cases were the result of the hospital’s failures - the failure to follow basic protocols.

re: #80 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

Well said. I’m an old school gun owner. There are four rules, and they are always followed.

I hang around with people at gun ranges, I have a good time shooting steel targets. I don’t think I’m rambo, and I have no real desire to have to defend myself or others with one. However there are some people that concern me that like guns, just like there are people who concern me that don’t like guns.

I don’t like the NRA, and I rail against them all the time in email. They turned into the GOP election committee years ago and don’t really protect gun rights other than help elect some truly insane people like the dude mentioned.

I don’t get the ‘ban all the guns’ view though either. Just because a gun can be used to kill (as Sam Jackson said in Jackie Brown) ‘every mother F*cker in the room’ doesn’t mean that it should be illegal.

While the Bushmaster quote is true, the numbers are < 50. Handguns kill a lot more, as do almost anything else like a car, stairs, etc.

We have an issue with Violence as a nation, not just gun violence. If we focused on the violence issue maybe I’d be more supportive, but blaming guns is to short sighted to me and a lot of people have perfectly normal relationships with a firearm and use it properly for entertainment.

Can you get Ebola just from hearing about it 24/7 on FoxNews?

Is it more virulent than influenza, that kills more people in US each month than Ebola has in the US since disease was first identified in 1970s?

Can you get Ebola from people flying in and out of DFW?

Can you get Ebola from visiting Dallas, Texas?

What about Cleveland?

What about Los Angeles? If someone is infect in this country, should we ban travel to stop the outbreak?

If Nigeria could stop an outbreak when it shares a border with the affected countries, are you saying we’re not as good as Nigeria’s health system?

Well, the woman is smaller. The flag is hers. He didn’t get arrested, or even talked about until now.

Here is some context about that flag…

…About 3 p.m. a handful of fans argued with protesters, who were yelling and chanting, near the intersection of North Broadway and Cole streets. The yelling escalated, a fan appeared to spit on one of the protesters and he was then struck on the head, at which point a melee ensued and punches were thrown.

At one point during the scuffle, a protester carrying an upside-down American flag used the pole as a weapon, attempting to jab a fan with the pole. A short time later, after the initial confrontation, a different fan grabbed the flag and ran with it for a brief period; protesters then wrestled the flag back.

Two women, one of whom was a juvenile, were arrested after the fight, police said.

Using a flag pole as a weapon will usually get you arrested.

I had people tweet to me that Tom Frieden isn’t a practicing doctor, so his opinions shouldn’t matter. These are right wingers complaining about the Ebola outbreak response mind you. So, a well regarded medical expert with experience in outbreaks (Frieden was at forefront of dealing with the TB outbreak in NYC that was due in part to the spread of AIDS/HIV) is a political hack, even though he’s got years of medical experience.

So, which is it - someone who can handle logistics and communication to unify the message to make sure everyone’s on the same page, or a health expert with decades of experience? The people discounting Frieden’s handling of the situation are ankle biters at best, and we’re still talking about 3 total cases (with about ~120 contacts being monitored). Out of 310 million.

You’ve got a better chance of winning Megamillions than you do of coming into contact with someone with Ebola in the US.

Donated to my local Democrat running against extreme right winger Scott Garrett here in NJ5. Garrett ran an ad claiming he was at the forefront of getting aid for NJ after Hurricane Sandy.

That couldn’t be further from the truth. He opposed grants in aid and was opposed to the Sandy aid package.

He opposed the Zadroga Act.

He’s proposed gutting Congress’ ability to do pretty much its constitutional duties.

He’s on the record that children of illegal immigrants shouldn’t be treated as US citizens if they’re born in the US.

Garrett is out of touch with his constituency. He’s even more extreme to the right of the GOP (which is really saying something). And he needs to be voted out of office.

OMG…LOL!!!

Yeah, that’s it. Both him and the woman who was hit blindsided both made up their stories and had friends punch them instead so that they could blame the protesters. It was prep-planned during the game!

I am not defending anyone. But the article does not say that the protester spit on the fan, it says the fan spit on the protester. You claim the article must be wrong. Who is defending whom?

People who do not understand what something is about (religion, concept of masculinity, patriotism) tend to fixate on and fetishize whatever symbols have come to stand for those concepts- Hence the ongoing flaps about flag lapel pins, latte salutes, crucifixes and nativity scenes on public property, etc…

ksdk.com - 2 arrested after protesters, Rams fans fight

They claim a Rams fan spit on a protester and there was a squabble for the upside down flag. It sounds like the Rams fans had an issue with that flag symbol.

I’m not going to excuse anyone, but with the crap the way it is in Ferguson and other communities it it easy to see there will be more of this kind of thing going on. That is what happens when people feel helpless in their situation and that is what happens when the other side thinks those same people have nothing to bitch about and are doing it wrong symbolically.

Heading the ball is already being phased out of junior soccer, as well, since there are concerns that younger players can suffer injuries that way. It’s a reasonable/responsible approach to the problem IMO. Furthermore there’s relatively little evidence that repeated concussions are a big problem in soccer, beyond the fact that any physical activity is going to have its share of various injuries.

On the other hand, the NFL has gone out of its way to hide the extensive brain damage that occurs from participation. To say nothing of the overall physical degradation (knees, back, weight) that afflicts ex-players.

From rockcenter.nbcnews.com

“‘People who think of concussions as only being present mostly in guys and mostly in the sport of football are just plain wrong,’ said Dr. Bob Cantu, who is chairman of the surgery division and the director of sports medicine at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass. ‘Soccer is right at the top of the list for girls.’

With the steady popularity of youth soccer, more girls are playing the game than ever before. Girls make up 48 percent of the more than 3 million kids registered in US Youth Soccer leagues.

Cantu said that the country is in the midst of ‘a concussion crisis’ and that studies show girls are reporting nearly twice as many concussions as boys in the sports they both play.”

I don’t think he’s talking about 300 pound girls. Besides, if you knew so much about sports you would know that most (edit) people (edit) football players weigh less than 300#.

Along those lines, I think the increase in the word ‘hero’ after 9/11 is similar.

I sometimes wonder if calling all cops heroes before they do anything heroic has caused some of them to be way to full of themselves to the point they feel a hero can do no wrong.

I think it always best to use the word when someone does something worthy of being labeled a hero.

IOC. Then FIFA and then the NFL, but those two are neck and neck.

The NFL might actually push ahead of the other two as a result of the CTE/TBI debacle, where they spent more than a decade blocking any substantive look at brain injuries among players and former players, and put a denier as the head of the group looking into the “problem”. The science is now overwhelming that TBI/CTE are a huge problem for the NFL. It’s the point where the NFL is looking at billion dollar settlements with the players (and that is probably insufficent).

It started with one body. And confession to police.

And 6 additional bodies.

A serial killer who preyed on women across Indiana, mostly around Gary.

Police were told Friday night that an unresponsive woman was found in a room at a Motel 6 off Interstate 80, Lt. Richard Hoyda of the Hammond Police Department said. The 19-year-old woman had been killed by strangulation, CNN affiliate WGN reported.

Detectives developed a lead that led them Saturday to Gary, where they executed search warrants on a home and vehicle and took a person of interest into custody, Hoyda told CNN.

“The search warrant was executed not at the residence of the suspect but at a location near to the reported suspect’s home in Gary,” he said in a statement.

The man made a confession and took detectives to Gary, where “several other female victims of possible homicide” were found, Hoyda said. Three women were found in three abandoned homes Saturday, and police found three other bodies Sunday, Freeman-Wilson said.

Two of the seven bodies recovered have been identified, said Chelsea Whittington, a spokeswoman for Freeman-Wilson.

Afrikka Hardy, 19, was the woman found at the Motel 6, and Anith Jones, 35 of Merrillville, who had been missing since October 8, was found over the weekend, she said.

The five other women have yet to be identified, Whittington said. Freeman-Wilson said she was not aware of any connection among the women but noted that only two had been identified.

In other words, this one person may well have killed more people than Ebola has in the US. Ever.

Speaking of Ebola, CNN is now headlining that the hysteria was hysterical. Thanks for nothing. For all the hysterics by the media and a right wing determined to try and pin Ebola on the President, it is still far less of a concern than the flu. Or firearms.

I was reading usatoday.com about the NFL’s role in the concussion problem and I wonder why the principals involved took no for an answer from the league. Why didn’t they go to the NFLPA? In fact, there was absolutely no mention of the union. The NFL can’t stop postmortems. It doesn’t, and never had that kind of authority. In the case of Junior Seau, the league asked his son to refuse the postmortem. Didn’t order it, just asked. That doesn’t exonerate the NFL, but the fact is that the players should have also known the same thing the NFL did. They had access to the same information the league did. As far as I’m concerned, the players are just as complicit as the league.

Geez, man. I’ve met a number of reasonably high-level football players, and a relative of mine has represented a number of them in court (not on disability-specific claims). They’re generally very nice, hard-working, family-oriented guys. They hesitate to criticize their teams because that’s their employer and extended family right there, and (see above) they’re usually pretty loyal, nice, hard-working etc.

The fact that a significant number of them have sued the league for negligence tells you something. It’s also far from irrelevant that the league went out of its way to obscure the research on head injuries for a long time.

You really need to explain in what way the “players” (which players?) are “complicit” here.

That doesn’t exonerate the NFL, but the fact is that the players should have also known the same thing the NFL did. They had access to the same information the league did. As far as I’m concerned, the players are just as complicit as the league.

This isn’t exactly my bailiwick, but just on the face of it, an assertion that power was somewhat equal between players in the NFL and owners and operators of the League is fatuous. Especially when the owners and operators have agreed to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to the players.

418 Vogon Poetry  Oct 20, 2014 10:08:48am

re: #407 SteveMcGazi

The NFLPA didn’t have the same information the NFL did. The league was actively suppressing information about brain injuries, and it took years before they even set up a concussion protocol for the league (and years more before the league clamped down on the protocol to insure safety of the players).

The NFLPA is among the weakest of the player unions for athletes. And the NFL is among the most tightly controlled of the league offices.

Goodell made sure to keep the issue from breaking out for as long as possible, because the evidence that the league had was that if parents knew that the damage could start as young as Pee Wee with a cumulative effect, that’s the end of the league as parents wouldn’t let their kids start with the sport.

There’s no other way to sugar coat the way the league has operated re: brain injuries. No other sport requires the kind of contacts that football does - with athletes throwing their bodies at each other at mind boggling speeds, and every single play involves a direct collision.

The NFL wouldn’t be throwing money at settlements if they thought there was any way on God’s Green Earth that they could pin this on the union.

Srsly I don’t even what it’s supposed to mean, dressing up a kid in a suit & tie and then strapping jet wings on him. Does it mean this kid will grow up to own his own private jet, or join the air force, or jump off a cliff wearing a homemade jetpack?

This is absolutely surreal.

After noting that there were no Ebola frakout posts on FB this morning, I looked again and the woman who was leading the freakout last week - a good friend who I consider(ed) to be reasonably intelligent - has posted a link to a YouTube video claiming that Ebola is a hoax. Not the supposed ‘outbreak’ here, the disease itself.

All because she said she went looking and couldn’t find any images of victims bleeding from the eyes, which of course I found by doing a simple image search. I am literally sitting here shaking my head. I just can’t process this information.

426 SteveMcGazi  Oct 20, 2014 10:24:06am

As far as the players are concerned, they also know what’s happening to their teammates. It’s not the NFL’s fault the union was so weak. The league has no power to suppress any information about brain injuries. They didn’t share, they misdirected, which is undeniable. However, the league had no power to prevent anybody from investigating the issue. The players’ union could have pushed the issue and didn’t. That is not the league’s fault, that is the players’ fault. That’s why I say the players are complicit. They also have a financial interest in keeping the game fast and violent. In spite of the awareness and the adaptation of protocols, players still lead with their helmets and still try to “beat” the concussion exams.
In the case of Junior Seau, the league had no authority to prevent the examination of the player’s brain. The son was the one who prevented the examination. The league spun some ridiculous story about the unsettled science, but where was the player’s advocate to say we need this examination? I think laying all of the blame at the feet of the league is just incomplete, that’s all.

For some, the Free Market is some sort of ideal natural state that can and should exist on its own. The fact that it needs a legal/regulatory and physical infrastructure seems irrelevant.

And remember, corporations are legal persons, but they are not people, in fact they are collectives, mandated and allowed to exist by the very same legal infrastructure they seem to find superfluous

There’s no other way to sugar coat the way the league has operated re: brain injuries. No other sport requires the kind of contacts that football does - with athletes throwing their bodies at each other at mind boggling speeds, and every single play involves a direct collision.

And some of the collisions involve two 225+ lb players making contact at a combined speed of 25 - 30 MPH in today’s NFL. Such collisions occur 120+ times during a typical NFL game.

The majority of yesterday’s NFL Hall Of Famers (given their size and conditioning of the time) would not be able to play in today’s NFL. They would be too small and too slow.

“DIdn’t you hear, the Ebola coverage was hyped up by FOX NEWS to get advertising money to help spread a CORPORATE AGENDA.”

re: #375 SteveMcGazi

As I said, the concussion problem in soccer needs to be addressed.

And I did not say that all football players weigh 300 pounds. But quite a few of them weigh well over 300. And the average is over 250.

Again, banging heads is not an inherent part of soccer. It is absolutely unavoidable, OTOH, in football. The NFL has instituted stricter rules for the most flagrant hits, but it’s still an essential part of the game and occurs in one form or another on nearly every play.

What causes CTE is usually not merely a few concussions. It’s actually the thousands of “micro-concussions” that players sustain over decades of playing, starting at a young age and extending through a pro career. Very similar to what happens to boxers. You should check out “League of Denial”. The NFL knew for years about these problems and essentially sat on the findings because it might be bad for business.
