Ron Paul Says Rand Paul’s “Travel Ban” Idea Is “Politically Motivated”

One of those rare moments when the elder Paul seems saner than his son
Politics • Views: 25,500

Here’s one of those moments for which we live, as crazy uncle Ron Paul says his crazy son Rand’s idea of a ban on travel to and from West Africa is “politically motivated.” Instant classic.

Ron Paul on Monday said that calls for a ban on travel from West African countries affected by Ebola are primarily “politically motivated” — just days after his son Sen. Rand Paul announced his support for one.

Appearing on Newsmax TV’s “America’s Forum” with former Arizona Republican Rep. J.D. Hayworth, Ron Paul said he wouldn’t support a travel ban. “Right now, I would say a travel ban is politically motivated more than something done for medical purposes,” the former Texas congressman and three-time presidential candidate told Hayworth.

Rand Paul, the Kentucky senator openly considering a 2016 presidential bid, said on a radio show last week that a temporary travel ban is “only reasonable,” BuzzFeed noted Monday.

Reminds me of the genius NPR campaign jingle segment from a few years back. A cowboy banjo strums, and a plaintive baritone intones:

Ron Paul…

He’s the truest of them all

Charles,

I love that you used a photo of Paul the Elder in front of a Confederate Flag, lest any of us here have any inclinations that, despite his rightfully calling out Paul the Younger, he is still anything but batshit crazy.

Of course, one must consider there are already some pretty big vacuums in both Pauls…

You know the most frustrating thing about having the Fugitive in the house? It’s been a while since I’ve had a puppy. My vision has gotten much worse.

I used to be able to look over to the side of the room in which the puppy was misbehaving and identify what exactly was going on.

NOW, I have to get out of my chair and actually go over there and see.

I grew up in a farm town that had a somewhat anti-intellectual culture, and I grew up in a family of smart people who read a lot and like to speak precisely, so I caught a lot of shit.

My favorite was the guy who told me I was ‘Igganurnt’. So I asked him to spell it. I think he got as far as the two G’s before telling me to shut up.

Same here. I was reading stuff like Stephen King in the 6th grade and knew a ton of big words. Got to 7th grade and my English teacher didn’t want me reading stuff like steven king because “ZOMG SWEAR WORDS AND SEX!” I went from reading long novels and books (read to kill a mockingbird in 5th grade) to reading shit like “Island of The Blue Dolphin” which was probably (to me) 4th grade level.

In the mostly black neighborhood where I grew up , there were kids who picked on me, but others who stood up for me, as they thought it was cool to associate with someone “smart”, I guess.

But when we moved to a mostly white working-class neighborhood, the kids were merciless and nobody stood up for me. They really felt intimidated, I guess.

No property rights, no government,

Anarchism- The philosophy of a new social order based on liberty unrestricted by man made law, the theory that all forms of government are based on violence-hence wrong and harmful, as well as unnecessary.

Anarchy- Absence of government; disbelief in and disregard of invasion and authority based on coercion and force; a condition of society regulated by voluntary agreement instead of government.

sounds more like a commune. I can’t see it working on a global scale.

Having a vocabulary and a desire to want to learn are two of the biggest areas where the Catholic grade and high school education really helped me. It was easy to go to college and continue to want to learn.

I think the greatest thing a teacher can give a student is the realization you never stop learning and while it may not come to you now, don’t give up as you will catch up. And even if you don’t you might find yourself rewarded by discovering another area you do shine in.

re: #55 FemNaziBitch

There is a scientific reason for that.

Dunbar’s number

Dunbar’s number is a suggested cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships. These are relationships in which an individual knows who each person is and how each person relates to every other person.[1][2][3][4][5][6] This number was first proposed by British anthropologist Robin Dunbar, who found a correlation between primate brain size and average social group size. By using the average human brain size and extrapolating from the results of primates, he proposed that humans can only comfortably maintain 150 stable relationships.[7] Proponents assert that numbers larger than this generally require more restrictive rules, laws, and enforced norms to maintain a stable, cohesive group. It has been proposed to lie between 100 and 250, with a commonly used value of 150.[8][9] Dunbar’s number states the number of people one knows and keeps social contact with, and it does not include the number of people known personally with a ceased social relationship, nor people just generally known with a lack of persistent social relationship, a number which might be much higher and likely depends on long-term memory size.

Dunbar theorized that “this limit is a direct function of relative neocortex size, and that this in turn limits group size … the limit imposed by neocortical processing capacity is simply on the number of individuals with whom a stable inter-personal relationship can be maintained.” On the periphery, the number also includes past colleagues, such as high school friends, with whom a person would want to reacquaint themself if they met again.[10]

I grew up in Texas with my single mom, who was Baptist. We weren’t hard-core church goers, but my mom believed in the bible. As a somewhat obedient child who wanted to please my mom, I had doubts about the whole “afterlife” concept but was too afraid to question my beliefs. I lived in fear: what if they were right, even if it didn’t make any rational sense? What if it really was a “sin” for me to even have those questions on my mind?

When I went to college and loosened the fuck up, I took acid on several occasions. On one of those occasions I felt the need to be alone, so I spent several hours in my room. During that time, I tripped the whole concept of death, the same way it is explained in your meme. My mind was completely blown.

Since then, I have told very few about the experience. But believing that there is no afterlife, as I have definitively since that experience, has always brought me great peace.

Oh, and I stopped doing acid. :)

Yeah, I grew up with the whole fear of going to hell ingrained in me, not so much by my parents (who used to tell me to question everything until we got cable and fox news) but by other family members and neighbors (baptists and evangelicals). Even used to say that “Now I lay me down to sleep” prayer which was “for kids” looking back on it that was a creepy fucking prayer.

I mentally grew out of religion by the time I graduated high school but looking back the whole experience was pretty twisted.

Just to help them understand how truly insignificant and unimportant they and all humans are you need to explain that Earth came along late. No the Universe was not created for us, our planet didn’t even exist until billions of years later.

Earth and our entire solar system was formed from the debris from one of the early generation super giant stars death. I’m sure that will make them feel much better about things…

Did the same thing up here in Canada, only with unemployment insurance. Government got in trouble. The number of people who counted as unemployed was reduced to about 1/3 of the people actually unemployed. The surplus went to general funds.

A) I love you
B) we don’t really know what happens next, but see point A

I can definitely say that having one parent completely disinterested in religion while the other spent every waking minute planning for the rapture/tribulation and telling us we could die any second was not confidence building.

Well, you seemed to have weathered it quite well ausador.

I didn’t too well as a kid, but I got as far away from my folks as I could as soon as I could and things got better. Them in Florida and me in Alaska did wonders for my state of mind, lol. ;)

I’m glad I got to reconnect with them as an adult when they needed help due to major health problems. My brother and sister both had lives and kids that didn’t allow them to help as much as they wanted. I had just sold a business and some real estate halfway through 2006 because I saw the crash coming.

Me and mom still couldn’t connect because if anything she had gotten worse and resented my intrusion into her life. Their place was a hoarder pigsty of piled up junk and wasn’t safe for dad. I cleaned it up and thereby earned her enmity, she just couldn’t be happy without her “stuff” piled up everywhere.

Dad and I got along great however, by that time we could understand each other pretty much and I didn’t have to resent the things he couldn’t say.

I’m happy to have gotten the chance because before coming back to Florida I have to admit that I pretty much hated the both of them. By the time they passed I didn’t anymore and actually felt a fair amount of affection once again even towards mom who actively despised me.

Ehh, life is what it is, you just keep on moving forward and wait for the pleasant surprises that lurk around the corner every so often. If your constantly looking out for the nasty ones then you need to rethink your outlook on life. :p

I liked it for the whole mythos behind it, the idea of the temples being used for Predator rites of passage and the whole ancient aliens perspective. And it followed some of the AVP novel stuff but the second one was just ridiculous with the predalien spit injecting alien embryos into people.

Oh I agree it should have been set more in the timeline of the original movies but you had two universes colliding given that most of the predator movies took place in the current era. Add to that the scene in the predator ship at the end of Predator 2 where there was a queen alien skull mounted on the trophy wall along with several alien heads it worked to do it on the current timeline.

Personally I would have liked to see it follow the AVP novels vs doing what they did but the first one was not terrible.

But that would almost imply that Mr. Hoft posts unsupported supposition, sketchy conjecture and invalid assumptions. Of course, he does quickly retract and correct when his further research shows he posted in error. // I_Crack_Myself_Up

I’m having fun over there with them. They all say only SS agents or workers were there. Uh, wrong. He voted next to a younger black lady to his right, and an older lady to his left. Then the lady on his right’s boyfriend (Mike) tells Obama to not kiss her (I think) and Obama jokes with them all while they all vote.

Don’t feel bad, you are just as much on the outside as 99% of those now following or embroiled in #gamergate the more you read the more confusing it can be. IF you ignore the fact that almost every accusation brought to justify the outrage on the part of the “activists” has been shown to be false.

If a Republican campaign machines disinformation represents macro-evolution then #gamergate is the perfect fit for micro-evolution. Hundreds of tiny lies and exaggerations told and retold and reworded more quickly than any rebuttal can be disseminated.

The trolls are having a field day by keeping it going and laughing at the huge number of people they have sucked in. Meanwhile people who have nothing to do with gaming but everything to do with MRA jump on the band wagon and are hailed as heroes for mouthing the right words between their attacks on any woman with an opinion.

It is truly a disgusting spectacle…

This all started by a blog post from a game developer’s ex-boyfriend alleging she cheated on him with a reviewer in order to get a good review.

That’s where the “ethics in gaming journalism” bit comes in.

That it’s happened to chase at least three women from their homes so far is irrelevant to the folks who think that this is SUCH AN IMPORTANT ISSUE and WHY ARE YOU IGNORING THE COLLUSION and OMG ETHICS MATTER which yes, yes, they do, so why are you not running the fuck away from the folks who think that threats of rape and death are perfectly acceptable ways to do business?

(One of the other victims has the crime to make videos discussing how women are presented in video games. No, really. Apparently this is something worth being sneered over.)

The problem with the reporting on this 0th world “issue” is that it often seems to be fact-free opinionating. For example, the harassment is ascribed to the “movement” as a whole, not to a few miscreants (sort of like antisemitism and terrorism was ascribed to “occupy”). For all I know, maybe most of the GGers share the sentiment, but let’s have some studies or hard facts showing that before leaping to conclusions about a whole bunch of people being basically criminals. (The fact that some female GGers were harassed by some anti-GGers, including threats of vaginal mutilation may also merit mention).

The essence of the GamerGate situation is simple enough —- an infestation of misogynists in the gamer community has decided to act out in very offensive ways.

Talk of ‘all’ is a straw man, as is talk of people being branded as criminals. It being a big internet, some anti-GG types have undoubtedly crossed the line. However, it is exceedingly hard to believe there is enough of that going on to change the basic picture.

Thank you for your opinion.

Talk of ‘all’ is a straw man, as is talk of people being branded as criminals.

Sorry, but that’s exactly Kluwe’s point. I thought you recommended his take on the issue?

“Your reaction (and I am not making this up, because it’s been widely documented literally everywhere) to various articles proclaiming the death of the basement-dwelling, cheetos-huffing, poopsock-sniffing douchepistol, because games are so good now that they are common entertainment and thus everyone plays them, was to COMPLETELY MISS THE POINT by either:

a) Making misogynistic threats against a wide variety of female game developers and critics because somehow they’re going to keep games you enjoy from ever being made again

or

b) Being stupid enough to get sucked in by people busy making misogynistic threats against a wide variety of female game developers and critics, and supporting their idiotic crusade for the dumbing down of everyone everywhere ever.”

So a GG is either a harasser or supports harassment.

It being a big internet, some anti-GG types have undoubtedly crossed the line. However, it is exceedingly hard to believe there is enough of that going on to change the basic picture.

I’m sure some GGs and some anti-GGs have crossed the line. That’s the only thing that is clear from the “reporting” so far.”

Except that from what I have seen first hand the majority of the physical threats originate from the trolls, they are egging this one and attacking both sides to keep it going. Thus you have people from the anti-GG side saying look at these logs! And also people from the pro-GG side saying look at theses logs! While claiming that all such attacks are a false flag and conveniently ignoring that many of the pro and anti attacks came from the same friggin’ place!

Look into the claims themselves, the ones that supposedly show a lapse in ethics by gaming reporters and try to find any that can be substantiated. Disgruntled ex-boyfriend claims girlfriend slept with reviewer to get better review, only no proof and “reviewer” has never written a game review for his current employer.

More proof surfaces to disprove supposed “affair for review” scandal and ex-boyfriend releases naked pictures of girlfriend “destroying her credibility” because after all only sluts pose naked, right? Followed by new story that while “reviewer who isn’t a reviewer” didn’t actually write the review he still somehow influenced the one that was written by someone else.

Almost every single story coming out of #gamergate is like that, including the completely wrong and baseless attacks on the chief editor of Polygon. Maybe if the “activists” actually had something to hang their hat on besides half-truths and outright lies I would be more inclined to give them a hearing. But as things stand now? Fuck them, they are being led around by the nose by a bunch of juvenile trolls and MRA’s doing this for fun.
