Breaking: Andrew Cuomo Backs Down - Health Workers Exposed to Ebola Will Self-Quarantine at Home

The walk-back
Health • Views: 45,115

At a press conference just a few minutes ago, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he’s backing down (he didn’t use those words, of course) on his mandatory quarantine order for health workers exposed to Ebola, and will now let them self-quarantine in their own homes instead of at a government facility.

This is basically the same policy Doctors Without Borders already had in place.

Will New Jersey’s Chris Christie be next to walk back his ill-advised and unscientific quarantine order?

There is this little problem. Most of the transiting health workers at JFK probably don’t live in NY.

I doubt Christie will back down. He needs to make up for those pictures with the President, so “standing up” to him and being an utter asshole while doing it will help some wingnuts forget. Plus you can be sure he’ll keep this incident in his back pocket for when immigration comes up during the primary debates.

As for Christie backing down, probably not. If he does back down he will be shamed into doing it.

This is a non-issue. It always was. All of this “mandatory quarantine” stuff is purely political.

So, let me get this straight. The way to deal with a health crisis is to make medical professionals stay home?

Christie was just in Iowa, promoting Joni The Castrator and talking wingnut to the religious right there.

Christie has to get his wingnut cred if he’s going to be successful in a GOP presidential bid.

This is a non-issue. It always was. All of this “mandatory quarantine” stuff is purely political.

Political or not, it has moved beyond the east coast to my state:

Illinois orders mandatory Ebola quarantine for high-risk travelers

Anyone in Illinois who had direct contact with a person infected with the Ebola virus while in three African countries will be required to undergo a mandatory home 21-day quarantine, according to an order signed by Gov. Pat Quinn.

The order, which was signed Friday, affects “high-risk” individuals who have come in contact with patients in Liberia, Guinea or Sierra Leone, the three nations hardest hit by the disease.

The mandatory order also includes medical personnel who have treated people infected with the Ebola virus, officials said.

The order will be implemented by local health departments throughout Illinois. Previously, high-risk people were subject to a voluntary quarantine, according to the governor’s office.

“This protective measure is too important to be voluntary,” Quinn said in a statement. “While we have no confirmed cases of the Ebola virus in Illinois, we will continue to take every safeguard necessary to protect first responders, health care workers and the people of Illinois.”

He’s almost certainly lying about that.

The thing you should keep in mind about Chuck is that he won’t hesitate to lie if he thinks it will give him an edge of some kind.

For example, the last time he went on an all-night bender he actually claimed he had records that showed I had a history of mental illness. He knows that’s false, and he knows I know it’s false, but he said it anyway in public.

This really was straight-up libel. He knew it was false when he said it.

39 Dark_Falcon  Oct 26, 2014 6:12:01pm

re: #23 Charles Johnson

Proves my point.

It does indeed. So far, O’Hare Intl has seen two false alarms where a person might have had Ebola. In both cases the person was taken to isolation promptly and cared for effectively. Any adults suspected of being infected are going to go to Rush Presbyterian Medical Center on the Near West Side, which is a very capable facility. Children go to Illinois Medical Center, which is better set up to meet the different needs of a child in isolation.

But Pat Quinn is in a tight reelection fight right now, and his order reflects that. If an Ebola transmission happens in Illinois in the next week Quinn will likely lose his office and he knows it. So he’s going to make sure he looks like he’s taking no chances, rights be damned.

I’d like to tell you that what this says about Pat Quinn is a reason to vote for Bruce Rauner, his Republican opponent. But it isn’t; There’s nothing that leads me to believe Rauner would not do the same thing in the same circumstance.

It really is fun to watch wingnuts flex their authoritarian muscles. “Yeah, we’re totally good with the government stripping people of their rights and involuntarily confining them against their will…except when they’re conservatives.”

Well, here’s something different, from one of City Journal’s writers:

BEN BOYCHUK: Ebola epidemic overreaction

That isn’t to say a bit of preparation wouldn’t be prudent. Both the Riverside and San Bernardino County public health departments are taking steps to ensure local hospitals are ready in the unlikely event Ebola reaches Inland Southern California. They’re surveying local hospitals to probe for possible weaknesses in training and facilities.

Local officials are also trying to educate and reassure the public. Riverside County this week launched a sensible and levelheaded “frequently asked questions” page on its website, rivcoph.org). The message is unequivocal: “Ebola does not pose a significant risk to the U.S. public.”

So, Ebola does not trouble me. I’m more concerned about the flu - which kills between 35,000 and 40,000 Americans every year - and the enterovirus, a nasty respiratory illness that’s hitting Southern California kids pretty hard right now.

But I’m especially worried about an epidemic far more contagious than any of those infectious diseases: hysteria.

Hysteria is easy to transmit. Unlike Ebola, hysteria is airborne - on the radio, on television - and easily passed through paper and ink. Excessive contact with Twitter and Facebook is also a surefire way to develop chronic hysteria. Hysteria does not discriminate. It thrives on the left and the right.

It’s been disappointing to see so many of my conservative friends lose their minds over the Ebola scare. Case in point: Jonathan V. Last, an otherwise excellent writer and reporter, attempted to make a case in the Weekly Standard for “controlled, informed panic.” One of those things is not like the others.

Unfortunately, Last let his imagination run wild. “It isn’t crazy to see how a health crisis could beget all sorts of other crises, from humanitarian, to economic, to political, to existential,” he writes. “If you think about Ebola and mutation and aerosolization … for too long, you start to get visions of Mad Max cruising the postapocalyptic landscape with Katniss Everdeen at his side.”

When CCJ tweeted referring to Nicholas Wade’s book I was thinking of putting up a Page titled “A Troublesome Tweet” - I might still use that title, catchy as it is.

Anyway, CCJ exhibits all the usual ignorance about race and humanity one expects of the hate-right.

I’ve been trying to read as widely as possible in current physical anthropology and genetics, a spin-off of my interest in evolution and the ideological/world-view civil war in which our society finds itself.

What disturbs me is that what I’ll call CCJ-think is held by too many other Americans. Also, quite a few online forum participants from other parts of the world are even worse.

Anyway, I suspect that CCJ is beyond rational debate and will simply get himself in real trouble one day, maybe even worse than O’keefe did to himself.

I suspect there’s been a backlash against all these “dark” BBC detective shows in the past couple of years. My most favorite recent ones are Scott & Bailey, which can be a bit soap opera-ish, but is still a solid police procedural with clever writing and a terrific mostly female cast, and I can’t wait for the next season of Vera, an excellent copper show starring the wondrous Brenda Blethyn (my wife is a big fan of the Ann Cleeves novels, which I believe haven’t yet been published in the US). Inspector George Gently is a good one too, though his assistant needs a bleeding haircut!

My most favorite recent ones are Scott & Bailey, which can be a bit soap operish, but is still a solid police procedural with clever writing and a terrific mostly female cast, and I can’t wait for the next season of Vera, an excellent copper show starring the wondrous Brenda Blethyn. Inspector George Gently is a good one too, though his assistant needs a bleeding haircut!

Pretty much stuck on the Morse cycle, though Foyle’s War was good for a while. Wallender was like a bad Bergman film, and I couldn’t handle the accent in Wire in the Blood.

Wife likes Poirot and Marple.

Speaking of troublesome… I see that National Racists Online are working hard to keep their hard earned moniker.

I missed, because I don’t read stuff over there, that Kevin Hang’em Williamson favorable referenced Samuel Francis in a column last week.

This comes but a few days after Charles Cooke favorable refers to Peter Brimelow:

Crying ‘Racism’ on Ebola

[…]

Over the past few decades or so, “racism” has become one of Aesop’s wolves, “racist” having been converted into such a depressingly quotidian charge that even those who believe racial injustice to be ubiquitous have come to resent the frequency with which it is alleged. Conservatives have long rolled their eyes at the wanton manner in which their ideological opponents have sought to tarnish them with the word — Peter Brimelow famously observed that, in so many instances, the definition of a “racist” is a “conservative who is winning an argument” — but, of late, we have been joined in irritation by other fair-minded sorts who have just about had enough. Earlier this year, George Will noted correctly that on college campuses and beyond, the charge has “become a joke among young people” — to the extent, even, that discussions of the topic are being received with “mirth.” Their inquiry? “What wolf”?

[…]

And then yesterday Nordlinger comes straight out of the closet and asks:

[…]

Okay. This brings me to American politics of the moment: President Obama is apparently planning big immigration changes after the congressional elections. He will effect these changes by executive order. I think it’s perfectly kosher to ask him and the Democrats right now, before November 4, “What exactly do you guys intend? What kind of America do you want?”

I don’t think that raising such concerns makes you a Klansman. And if they tell you you are, tell them to stuff it.

Reality is this: NRO is a haven of white supremacists and their marginally aware self-defeating (e.g., Williams) adherents.

Fear of the NSA sneaking looks at your Facebook vacation photos.

I hope so. I think part of the problem is that he’s still a nobody to the world at large. He doesn’t have Hannity or Limbaugh name recognition. It’s kind of a perverse ‘security through obscurity’.

If he were to become that well-known and keep doxxing people, hopefully he’d get the metaphorically ass-kicking he deserves.

Shit, people still make these comments (I’m looking at you, Sam Harris), despite the murdered doctors and firebombed women’s clinics that dot the landscape.

I doubt it, because to borrow from Mattand’s hypothesis, many of his followers are part of the bad sections of America’s gun culture*. Such people see camping as a thing to be done with guns, guns that clearly cannot be permitted to an “Obamunist” such as she.

/tongue in sheek

*: Please don’t ask me to define the sections of America’s gun culture tonight. I’m not ready to give exact definitions, so for now let’s just stipulate that those whose interest in guns is primarily about opposing the government are part of the bad sections.

Dude, you’re being weasely tonight. Though I guess I should get used to that, it’s par for the course for you.

I just wanted to make sure your definition of “mouth breathers” wasn’t literal. I’ve had a good deal of trouble breathing through my nose lately due to inflammation, so I’ve had to do some mouth breathing myself at times. So a general definition of mouth-breathers is fine. No great specifics needed.

/Not-serious, but I really have had trouble breathing through my nose lately.

I camped a dozen times in Colorado this summer. Only once were there guns involved, because out of our party of 10 guys, seven of them brought guns (including me, because I knew this was a “redneck” camping trip with guns, dirtbikes, and a big bonfire). The rest of the time, I camped unarmed (I don’t own any handguns, just rifles and shotguns).

[Cuomo] will now let them self-quarantine in their own homes instead of at a government facility.

This is basically the same policy as Doctors Without Borders already had in place.

Are you saying that DWB’s policy is for self-quarantine? This ABC news article suggests otherwise:

Doctors who have treated Ebola patients in West Africa are required to self-monitor for the 21-day incubation period, but they are not required to self-quarantine, according to guidelines from Doctors Without Borders, for whom Spencer was working overseas.

“Self-quarantine is neither warranted nor recommended when a person is not displaying Ebola-like symptoms,” the organization said Thursday in a statement. “However, returned staff members are discouraged from returning to work during the 21-day period.”

The “liberal” media needs to drop this idea of “balance,” needs to accept that sometimes the public has to be sat down and told the truth without presenting “the other side.” If a doctor says that a quarantine is not necessary, that should be it. You should not need to find “the common man” or find another doctor who feeds the public’s stupidity by saying a quarantine should happen if for no other reason than to put people at ease.

Actually, the best initial example to use (not the best there is, but the best to use) would be Radical Islamist rants and publications on the internet radicalizing a someone who then commits acts of terror. It’s the best initial example to use because its a familiar one people understand and because the fact that the radicalizer is usually foreign spares the initial example any discussion of how he is to be tried, since the terror master is going to be killed via airstrike instead of being brought to trial.

I’m sorry, you’ve completely lost me here. I’m suggesting changes to US laws to allow the legal system to cope with domestic stochastic terrorists who presently have complete immunity via the first amendment.

The fact that the US engages in extrajudicial killing of foreign terrorists is pretty much orthogonal to anything having to do with US law. I’m most certainly not proposing that US domestic stochastic terrorists be dealt with as lawlessly as foreign terrorists simply in view of the label of ‘stochastic terrorist’.

If you can’t seem to detect any racism, here’s a little clue: a writer for NRO gushingly quoting Peter Brimelow will almost always be racist. Even you should be able to figure that out.

A clue is the NRO habit of implying “those people” are not really Americans, and the underlying assumption than WASP Americans (preferably with some dough) are better than everyone else and can therefore judge the rest of us poor schlubs.

I’d argue that is the worst initial example to use as it plays into the already existing and unrealistic fears of the American public about Muslim terrorism. This foaming fear is one of the tools that The Ministry of Truth, I mean Fox News, uses to enrage the public and further their autocratic goals.

Such a policy would be a distraction from the real problem because Islamic radicalism does not pose an existential threat to America.

Until America comes to grip with the bullshit spread by The Ministry of Truth and individuals like Rush and Glenn it is in deadly danger of being destroyed. A nation ruled by fear mongers will not be a democratic one, and very few people in it will be free.

We place a lot of practical emphasis on education, which is a good thing in many respects, but I fear that we are failing in teaching basics, like how science works, how history is written and researched as well as basic civics, media and how our political system works.

A lot of very cynical people are exploiting this gap to promote their agendas, which are damaging to America over the long run.

For probably obvious reasons, I’m really concerned with the quality and direction of education in the USA. From my perspective as a foreign teacher in a very top-down, regimented, exam-driven education system, I’m alarmed by the willingness in the States to drive public education toward that model. Meanwhile, a small but alarmingly effective component of society wants to demolish public education in favor of a mish-mosh of charter, religious and private for-profit schools.

The top-down model (NCLB, Common Core, for example) stresses exam results, driving school systems to cut back on the arts and music, and other “soft” subjects that are not being tested. The drive to gut public education removes a common experience (and a politically neutral curriculum) that binds most Americans together.

Predictably, the kind of people who want to segregate their kids in a compartmentalized education system resent and mistrust the Common Core as some kind of government plot. Some of them don’t even trust the AP or IB programs. Since their organization and drive is effective and focused, those are the people who get elected to school boards, who get media attention, and who commandeer the RWNJ media network. They don’t oppose Common Core on its educational merits or demerits. They oppose it because it comes from the Government and (zog forbid) because it encourages students to think and question everything — including the bullshit the RR and RWNJ fringe want students to internalize.

VOTER HARASSMENT IN WISCONSIN

Milwaukee County’s Republican Elections Commissioner Rick Baas warned a crowd of volunteers and supporters Friday night to be “concerned about voter fraud,” and urged the hundreds of attendees to take an “extra step of vigilance.” “You as a Wisconsin resident can challenge people who are not supposed to be voting,” he said at the Milwaukee County Republicans event. “You’ve got to do that.”

Under state law, voters, election workers, official observers, or any member of the public can challenge the validity of someones vote, but to do so, they must swear under oath that they have firsthand knowledge that the person is not qualified to vote. A challenge cannot be based on a mere suspicion or hunch.

“Providing those parameters would be important to any discussion related to voter challenges,” Milwaukee City Election Commission Director Neil Albrecht told ThinkProgress. “Failure to provide has the potential to incite unsubstantiated challenges and a disruption to voting.”

Others echoed this concern that Baas’ invocation for “challenging” at the polls would hurt legitimate voters. “There’s a fine line by legitimate questions and harassment and intimidation,” said Darryl Morin, the Midwest vice president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). Morin told ThinkProgress that as a Republican it is “disappointing” to see such rhetoric coming from “a party that claims to be reaching out to minorities.”

VOTER HARASSMENT IN WISCONSIN

Best practices for challenges: Look into challenges honestly, but if someone is clearly acting in bad faith in making a challenge, have the police arrest him or her for interfering in the election and perjury. People who are fanatical enough to risk an arrest while “lying for Jesus” will still likely back off if the consequence of dishonesty is a perjury charge. Republicans (including me) have a need to feel that they are respectable, and a perjury conviction makes you officially non-respectable.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. This week marks the 2d anniversary since Sandy hit the region, and while most people think that everything is back to normal, some people are still dealing with the mental and physical issues from recovering from the storm, let alone with the pockets where rebuilding hasn’t occurred, and long term storm proofing has yet to get underway.

Lower Manhattan looks remarkably normal, but if you look closer, you’d see that South Ferry is still a mess - particularly the 1 train station stop. The MTA is still years away from getting what was a new station rebuilt and storm proofed. Other stations in Lower Manhattan are back up and running, but storm proofing has yet to be completed there.

The MTA has also rebuilt the Montague Street tunnel after 15 months of no service. Other subway tunnels that were flooded still need major repairs. Amtrak has warned that they will need to take Hudson River tunnels out of service to do major repairs, which would cripple the NEC and NJ Transit service into Midtown. The East River tunnels also need work, but there’s 4 tunnels so the margin for work is much easier to get around.

The Rockaways are still a mess, as are parts of the Jersey Shore. There’s been progress to be sure, but there’s still so much more to be done.

America, 2014:

Creationism conference at large U.S. research university stirs unease

A creationist conference set for a major research campus — Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing — is creating unease among some of the school’s students and faculty, which includes several prominent evolutionary biologists.

The 1 November event, called the Origins Summit, is sponsored by Creation Summit, an Oklahoma-based nonprofit Christian group that believes in a literal interpretation of the Bible and was founded to “challenge evolution and all such theories predicated on chance.” The one-day conference will include eight workshops, according the event’s website, including discussion of how evolutionary theory influenced Adolf Hitler’s worldview, why “the Big Bang is fake,” and why “natural selection is NOT evolution.” Another talk targets the work of MSU biologist Richard Lenski, who has conducted an influential, decades-long study of evolution in bacterial populations.

News of the event caught MSU’s scientific community largely by surprise. Creation Summit secured a room at the university’s business school through a student religious group, but the student group did not learn about the details of the program—or the sometimes provocative talk titles — until later, says MSU zoologist Fred Dyer. The talk titles led Dyer to suspect that the student group was not involved in planning the conference, he says, prompting him to look into its origins.

Once again, fear and hysteria is pushing politicians to act on an Ebola threat. Rather than using the fear and hysteria to send even more resources to West Africa to confront and stop the outbreak at its source, politicians will push the local response (quarantining doctors and nurses that show no symptoms and have tested negative for Ebola). The NIH warns of the unintended consequences, such as losing doctors and other health workers who might otherwise go to Africa for a 4 week stretch getting a 3 week period tacked on back in the States that makes the costs and burden too much.

NYS and NJ are backing off their quarantine rules, allowing for voluntary home checks, which makes more sense. These professionals should be allowed to self monitor. They know the risks to themselves and others better than the politicians who are making these decisions.

And NJ is pushing back against the claims that the nurse was not in a climate controlled tent , which when seen in the light that NJ is backing off the quarantine and allowing the nurse to fly home to Maine to continue quarantine there, suggests that they did get it wrong.

There’s still a risk that people who aren’t health workers flying in with the disease and not realizing it, but that too can be addressed with voluntary screening and regular checks with the local health authorities.

At the moment, there’s a young child who’s being evaluated in Bellevue for symptoms but no test results as yet.

Oddly enough, it seems first Cuomo and then Christie backed off the quarantines within hours of the announcement that Ms. Hickox had found a lawyer and was filing suit to challenge her detainment. You’d almost think the two were connected…

And cats loved Twain since he wore white suits and made the deposition of contrasting hair much easier to carry out.

Ah, I see…

So that’s the plan. Release her to Maine but declare she’s still under quarantine, so when the government there tells him to piss off and allows her to resume her life, he can claim that the decision not to quarantine her is on them.

Maine’s governor is nutball extraordinaire Paul LePage. Imagine what he’s going to do with this in the middle of a close election race.

Seriously? They’re blaming unions for the conditions at Wal-Mart, a company that has fired people or ruined their lives just for considering the idea of unionizing the workers in a single store?

Yeah, Massie was campaigning with Mitch last week.
I think turnout at each stop was in the dozens, despite the lure of free food.

re: #350 Backwoods_Sleuth

“When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction.”

Then Twain would be right at home in my old ‘hometown’, Vicenza. They all love cats, though there is argument about the sauces.

<emAlthough “cucina povera” seems to be more associated with Tuscany and the south than the Veneto, Vicenza’s cuisine is deeply defined by the foods people prepared generations ago when Vicenza, along with the Veneto, experienced crippling poverty as a result of droughts, plagues, famines and wars caused by political machinations. For example, the local nickname “magnagatti” (literally cat-eaters) originated from a time when rumors started to circulate that the people of Vicenza, out of poverty and desperation, started eating cats. Although the truth behind the rumor is debatable, the locals’ full acceptance of the nickname and pride in being called cat-eaters attest to the resilience of Vicenza’s people as well as its culinary traditions. Although Vicenza now enjoys one of the highest standard of living in Italy, its cuisine is still rooted in basic preparations of what is typically considered lowly ingredients to make excellent dishes.

Once again, fear and hysteria is pushing politicians to act on an Ebola threat. Rather than using the fear and hysteria to send even more resources to West Africa to confront and stop the outbreak at its source,

That would entail giving FREE STUFF to dark-skinned people, and we are categorically against such things.

That’s because Hemingway passed through Vicenza on his way back from the fighting in Bassano and Caporetto. He and his buds paid a local kid to pass a bottle of grappa through the train window.

That piece made me think of those nations that put education on a pedestal, even to the extent of providing free or low cost college tuition. The fools: all they need is the Bible. We’re gonna’ so kick their asses in the years to come.
