Breaking: Andrew Cuomo Backs Down - Health Workers Exposed to Ebola Will Self-Quarantine at Home

At a press conference just a few minutes ago, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he’s backing down (he didn’t use those words, of course) on his mandatory quarantine order for health workers exposed to Ebola, and will now let them self-quarantine in their own homes instead of at a government facility.

This is basically the same policy Doctors Without Borders already had in place.

Will New Jersey’s Chris Christie be next to walk back his ill-advised and unscientific quarantine order?

I doubt Christie will back down. He needs to make up for those pictures with the President, so “standing up” to him and being an utter asshole while doing it will help some wingnuts forget. Plus you can be sure he’ll keep this incident in his back pocket for when immigration comes up during the primary debates.

Political or not, it has moved beyond the east coast to my state:

Illinois orders mandatory Ebola quarantine for high-risk travelers

Anyone in Illinois who had direct contact with a person infected with the Ebola virus while in three African countries will be required to undergo a mandatory home 21-day quarantine, according to an order signed by Gov. Pat Quinn.

The order, which was signed Friday, affects “high-risk” individuals who have come in contact with patients in Liberia, Guinea or Sierra Leone, the three nations hardest hit by the disease.

The mandatory order also includes medical personnel who have treated people infected with the Ebola virus, officials said.

The order will be implemented by local health departments throughout Illinois. Previously, high-risk people were subject to a voluntary quarantine, according to the governor’s office.

“This protective measure is too important to be voluntary,” Quinn said in a statement. “While we have no confirmed cases of the Ebola virus in Illinois, we will continue to take every safeguard necessary to protect first responders, health care workers and the people of Illinois.”

It does indeed. So far, O’Hare Intl has seen two false alarms where a person might have had Ebola. In both cases the person was taken to isolation promptly and cared for effectively. Any adults suspected of being infected are going to go to Rush Presbyterian Medical Center on the Near West Side, which is a very capable facility. Children go to Illinois Medical Center, which is better set up to meet the different needs of a child in isolation.

But Pat Quinn is in a tight reelection fight right now, and his order reflects that. If an Ebola transmission happens in Illinois in the next week Quinn will likely lose his office and he knows it. So he’s going to make sure he looks like he’s taking no chances, rights be damned.

I’d like to tell you that what this says about Pat Quinn is a reason to vote for Bruce Rauner, his Republican opponent. But it isn’t; There’s nothing that leads me to believe Rauner would not do the same thing in the same circumstance.

Unfortunately, Last let his imagination run wild. “It isn’t crazy to see how a health crisis could beget all sorts of other crises, from humanitarian, to economic, to political, to existential,” he writes. “If you think about Ebola and mutation and aerosolization … for too long, you start to get visions of Mad Max cruising the postapocalyptic landscape with Katniss Everdeen at his side.”

When CCJ tweeted referring to Nicholas Wade’s book I was thinking of putting up a Page titled “A Troublesome Tweet” - I might still use that title, catchy as it is.

Anyway, CCJ exhibits all the usual ignorance about race and humanity one expects of the hate-right.

I’ve been trying to read as widely as possible in current physical anthropology and genetics, a spin-off of my interest in evolution and the ideological/world-view civil war in which our society finds itself.

What disturbs me is that what I’ll call CCJ-think is held by too many other Americans. Also, quite a few online forum participants from other parts of the world are even worse.

My most favorite recent ones are Scott & Bailey, which can be a bit soap opera-ish, but is still a solid police procedural with clever writing and a terrific mostly female cast, and I can’t wait for the next season of Vera, an excellent copper show starring the wondrous Brenda Blethyn (my wife is a big fan of the Ann Cleeves novels, which I believe haven’t yet been published in the US). I hope so. I think part of the problem is that he’s still a nobody to the world at large. He doesn’t have Hannity or Limbaugh name recognition. It’s kind of a perverse ‘security through obscurity’.

We had some Irish and Brit friends over for drinks the other night, with TCM’s airing of Out of Africa sans sound on the tv (kudos to the great cinematographer David Watkin btw), and a drunken cheer went up whenever the actor who plays Foyle, Michael Kitchen, showed up in a couple of scenes, much younger than Foyle ever was.

Did I mention we were all drunk? And dancing the twist?

I wanted to like Wire in the Blood more. but it just didn’t work out. Re Miss Marple and Poirot: I can’t get enough of that stuff.

So Rick Scott is still trying to get the “risk classifications” for the few people being monitored by CDC in Florida. He apparently got their names off the CDC website but hasn’t been able to get them to tell him if any of them are considered “high risk” or not, at least so far.

Actually, the best initial example to use (not the best there is, but the best to use) would be Radical Islamist rants and publications on the internet radicalizing a someone who then commits acts of terror. It’s the best initial example to use because its a familiar one people understand and because the fact that the radicalizer is usually foreign spares the initial example any discussion of how he is to be tried, since the terror master is going to be killed via airstrike instead of being brought to trial.

I’d argue that is the worst initial example to use as it plays into the already existing and unrealistic fears of the American public about Muslim terrorism. This foaming fear is one of the tools that The Ministry of Truth, I mean Fox News, uses to enrage the public and further their autocratic goals.

Such a policy would be a distraction from the real problem because Islamic radicalism does not pose an existential threat to America.

Until America comes to grip with the bullshit spread by The Ministry of Truth and individuals like Rush and Glenn it is in deadly danger of being destroyed. A nation ruled by fear mongers will not be a democratic one, and very few people in it will be free.

For probably obvious reasons, I’m really concerned with the quality and direction of education in the USA. From my perspective as a foreign teacher in a very top-down, regimented, exam-driven education system, I’m alarmed by the willingness in the States to drive public education toward that model. Meanwhile, a small but alarmingly effective component of society wants to demolish public education in favor of a mish-mosh of charter, religious and private for-profit schools.

The top-down model (NCLB, Common Core, for example) stresses exam results, driving school systems to cut back on the arts and music, and other “soft” subjects that are not being tested. The drive to gut public education removes a common experience (and a politically neutral curriculum) that binds most Americans together.

Predictably, the kind of people who want to segregate their kids in a compartmentalized education system resent and mistrust the Common Core as some kind of government plot. Some of them don’t even trust the AP or IB programs. Since their organization and drive is effective and focused, those are the people who get elected to school boards, who get media attention, and who commandeer the RWNJ media network. They don’t oppose Common Core on its educational merits or demerits. They oppose it because it comes from the Government and (zog forbid) because it encourages students to think and question everything — including the bullshit the RR and RWNJ fringe want students to internalize.

Milwaukee County’s Republican Elections Commissioner Rick Baas warned a crowd of volunteers and supporters Friday night to be “concerned about voter fraud,” and urged the hundreds of attendees to take an “extra step of vigilance.” “You as a Wisconsin resident can challenge people who are not supposed to be voting,” he said at the Milwaukee County Republicans event. “You’ve got to do that.”

Under state law, voters, election workers, official observers, or any member of the public can challenge the validity of someones vote, but to do so, they must swear under oath that they have firsthand knowledge that the person is not qualified to vote. A challenge cannot be based on a mere suspicion or hunch.

“Providing those parameters would be important to any discussion related to voter challenges,” Milwaukee City Election Commission Director Neil Albrecht told ThinkProgress. “Failure to provide has the potential to incite unsubstantiated challenges and a disruption to voting.”

Others echoed this concern that Baas’ invocation for “challenging” at the polls would hurt legitimate voters. “There’s a fine line by legitimate questions and harassment and intimidation,” said Darryl Morin, the Midwest vice president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). Morin told ThinkProgress that as a Republican it is “disappointing” to see such rhetoric coming from “a party that claims to be reaching out to minorities.”

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. This week marks the 2d anniversary since Sandy hit the region, and while most people think that everything is back to normal, some people are still dealing with the mental and physical issues from recovering from the storm, let alone with the pockets where rebuilding hasn’t occurred, and long term storm proofing has yet to get underway.

Lower Manhattan looks remarkably normal, but if you look closer, you’d see that South Ferry is still a mess - particularly the 1 train station stop. The MTA is still years away from getting what was a new station rebuilt and storm proofed. Other stations in Lower Manhattan are back up and running, but storm proofing has yet to be completed there.

The MTA has also rebuilt the Montague Street tunnel after 15 months of no service. Other subway tunnels that were flooded still need major repairs. Amtrak has warned that they will need to take Hudson River tunnels out of service to do major repairs, which would cripple the NEC and NJ Transit service into Midtown. The East River tunnels also need work, but there’s 4 tunnels so the margin for work is much easier to get around.

The Rockaways are still a mess, as are parts of the Jersey Shore. There’s been progress to be sure, but there’s still so much more to be done.

Once again, fear and hysteria is pushing politicians to act on an Ebola threat. Rather than using the fear and hysteria to send even more resources to West Africa to confront and stop the outbreak at its source, politicians will push the local response (quarantining doctors and nurses that show no symptoms and have tested negative for Ebola). The NIH warns of the unintended consequences, such as losing doctors and other health workers who might otherwise go to Africa for a 4 week stretch getting a 3 week period tacked on back in the States that makes the costs and burden too much.

NYS and NJ are backing off their quarantine rules, allowing for voluntary home checks, which makes more sense. These professionals should be allowed to self monitor. They know the risks to themselves and others better than the politicians who are making these decisions.

And NJ is pushing back against the claims that the nurse was not in a climate controlled tent , which when seen in the light that NJ is backing off the quarantine and allowing the nurse to fly home to Maine to continue quarantine there, suggests that they did get it wrong.

There’s still a risk that people who aren’t health workers flying in with the disease and not realizing it, but that too can be addressed with voluntary screening and regular checks with the local health authorities.

At the moment, there’s a young child who’s being evaluated in Bellevue for symptoms but no test results as yet.

A nurse who recently returned from West Africa and was quarantined for the past three days in a tent behind a New Jersey hospital despite having no symptoms associated with Ebola will be allowed to return home to serve out the rest of her mandatory quarantine.

So that’s the plan. Release her to Maine but declare she’s still under quarantine, so when the government there tells him to piss off and allows her to resume her life, he can claim that the decision not to quarantine her is on them.

Yeah, Massie was campaigning with Mitch last week.
I think turnout at each stop was in the dozens, despite the lure of free food.
