Nation’s Leading Epidemiology Groups Oppose Mandatory Quarantine

Public policy should not be driven by fear

Some of the nation’s leading organizations that specialize in epidemiology and infectious diseases have come out against the mandatory quarantine policies being pushed by paranoia-pandering politicians. Here are statements from The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

A. Governor Cuomo did not ease any restrictions at all. The same policies we put into effect on Friday are still the same policies now. That’s been reported incorrectly. I spoke to Governor Cuomo last night. He’s in the exact same position that’s he’s been all along. So I have no response to him because there’s nothing to respond to. And remember, Illinois has since adopted this policy. So has, now, the state of Maryland. So, I’m telling you guys this is going to become a national policy eventually. Eventually the C.D.C. will come around. And remember, they were late to the game in Texas, and we have people infected because of it.

Except Maryland isn’t doing what Christie did:

Under the plan, screeners at the airports of entry will provide the names and contact information for all travelers from the affected countries with destinations in Maryland. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will make contact through a new outbound call center and provide specific guidance, information, and 24-hour numbers for assistance.

The state will coordinate daily contact with the travelers during the 21 days following the last possible exposure when illness might develop. The state will work with local health departments to conduct direct outreach as needed. Should a traveler need medical attention, health officials will provide advance direction to the emergency management system for transport and the local hospital for evaluation. Maryland’s public health laboratory is available 24 hours a day for Ebola testing.

CANTON, OH (The Borowitz Report)—An Ohio man has become infected with misinformation about the Ebola virus through casual contact with cable news, the Centers for Disease Control has confirmed.

Tracy Klugian, thirty-one, briefly came into contact with alarmist Ebola hearsay during a visit to the Akron-Canton airport, where a CNN report about Ebola was showing on one of the televisions in the airport bar. “Mr. Klugian is believed to have been exposed to cable news for no more than ten minutes, but long enough to become infected,” a spokesman for the C.D.C. said. “Within an hour, he was showing signs of believing that an Ebola outbreak in the United States was inevitable and unstoppable.”

Once Klugian’s condition was apparent, the Ohio man was rushed to a public library and given a seventh-grade biology textbook, at which point he “started to stabilize,” the spokesman said.

But others exposed to the widening epidemic of Ebola misinformation may not be so lucky. “A man in Oklahoma was exposed to Elisabeth Hasselbeck on Fox for over three minutes,” the C.D.C. spokesman said gravely. “We hope we’re not too late.”

Christie is playing politics with his handling of the Ebola quarantine. Instead of letting the experts deal with this - and he did set up an Ebola committee to do just that, he’s pushing a mandatory quarantine for people who are asymptomatic. The same thing can be accomplished by voluntary watches by these health professionals with check-ins with local health officials.

Dr. Spencer did just that (voluntarily checking his vitals 2x a day), and he didn’t put the public at risk despite the bloviation by the media because the only way you’re able to get Ebola is to be in direct contact with someone who is actively showing symptoms of Ebola.

It doesn’t matter that he was on the subway at some point earlier in the week, because he wasn’t symptomatic. He could go bowling because he wasn’t showing symptoms there either.

Once he did begin showing symptoms, he called it in, and the emergency response was then proper - treating him like a suspected case, isolating him, and using proper protocols (though some like the Daily Fail fixated on police officers dumping their gloves and other materials into a garbage bin even though they were never actually inside the apartment or ever came into contact with Dr. Spencer themselves). The politicians are more interested in optics than facts, and the media is more than happy to oblige in that.

Cuomo is little better than Christie in that regard; they both have presidential aspirations, and are using this as a way to separate themselves from Obama’s treatment, and to look “presidential”. Instead, they’re both showing how not to deal with an outbreak.

“She hadn’t had any symptoms for 24 hours and she tested negative for Ebola so there’s no reason to keep her,” said Christie, a potential Republican Party 2016 U.S. presidential candidate known for his combative style.

Christie said he sees no reason to talk to Hickox and expressed “goodwill” toward her. “But she needs to understand that the obligation of elected officials is to protect the public health of all the people,” Christie said.

Christie said his state was providing transportation for her to Maine, whose health officials “will take over her care and monitoring from there” as she completes a 21-day quarantine at home. The quarantine matches the incubation period of the virus.

That’s not the policy he put in place initially.

And the policy of home quarantine is different than the mandatory quarantine he imposed, and it not what the NIH or CDC recommends either.

4 yr old breaks his leg in horseplay accident w/6 yr old cousin yesterday. Full cast on; wheelchair being ordered so he can attend PreK classes where he’ll have to learn to leave the chair and sit on the toilet since school personnel are not allowed to help (molestation liability issues).

He’s taking it all in stride and once the temporary splint was removed this morning, he’s been pretty pain free, as compared to yesterday after the closed fracture of the tibia at the growth plate. Also, Motrin 100 makes him throw up, piling up the bed linens—so luckily, he doesn’t need it anymore. He’s a real trouper and won everyone over, too.

Took a while, but I found a place that carries 12 and 14 inch wheelchairs; they’ll bring out both to find out the right fit and teach us a few things about it.

It will be Spiderman in a wheelchair for Halloween, I’m afraid. : )

This has to be really difficult for him, given quite a few cards are dealt against him.

I do agree that he seems like a young guy who some day could play a major role in politics. He needs to be able to define and control the conversation though, rather than try to play the other guys’ game.

I have some personal experience with this. Broken hip in 2nd grade, healed completely with no limp etc. At least the weeks in traction and a half-body cast were worth it.

When I lived in Washington State many years ago, the only place to buy liquor (not beer / wine) was one of the state run liquor stores. They seemed to specialise in finding the most out of the way strip malls, and took the art of non-marketing to a whole new level.

Hmmm—thanks for answering. I thought he was hitting pretty hard, but maybe I’m too close to the campaign. Part of his approach tonight, I think, was because The State paper endorsed McMaster, saying they disagreed with many of his ideas, but because he’s older and experienced, he should win. (Oddly, they then endorsed Vincent Sheheen, the Dem running against Nikki Haley.)

His background is really interesting—he touched on it tonight, about the Orangeburg Massacre and his father going to prison. Happened earlier the same year as Kent State, although not nearly as many people know about it. (I had never heard of it until I met Bakari.)

Your state paper’s editors are probably lying to themselves. There is little that is said about politics which can hold up under the torch of a good bit of research.

What I perceived in that debate is that the people of South Carolina want to feel good about themselves. The questions were selected and framed so the two “debaters” could tell their fellow South Carolinians about how good South Carolina is and all the people in it are wonderful.

This is not uncommon.

It is de rigueur for American politics today.

I noticed how Bakari didn’t try to challenge the Gospel of Ronnie religion though the well worn claims are false.

I noticed that when it came to the local health facilities closing, which Bakari wants to maintain open, that the meme was “jobs” rather than simply that people in those areas need health care. Bakari seemed to go along with the “jobs” as the ultimate meaning of humanity meme. Such manicured talking points are rarely challenged, even though they are opposite to what we need.

Like all of the “debates” down here, the questions are definitely skewed from the Republican point of view. At least they finally got to debate—Henry at first refused, then cancelled the day before the debate was to take place (notice, that didn’t come up.)

It just kills me—Sellers and Sheheen have worked their hearts out—6-7 stops a day, all over the state. And Nikki Haley just lies and gish gallops across every issue.

Supposedly Bobby Harrell, the guy they were talking about who just got indicted, is turning state’s evidence and has stuff on Haley and a few others. But, of course, it will never come out before the election, and probably wouldn’t make any difference to the right wing idiots anyway.
It’s just very depressing.

This isn’t the doing of Christie. This is the policy of the United States of America, determined by the Secretary of Defense. If it is really atavistic science hate, then it’s coming from the very top.

Alternatively, somebody has decided to just be on the safe side. A lot seems to depend on which party the guy making the decision hails from.

“Because if we do, then we’re just putting another barrier on somebody who’s already doing really important work on our behalf. And that’s not something that I think any of us should want to see happen,” he added.
