Took this video of the very unfortunate Orbital Sciences rocket explosion. Video was taken in our Cessna 177 Cardinal from an altitude of 3000ft. Sorry for the sound. I’ll have a better one up once it’s been edited out.

How far away from the launch site was he?

Also, NASA is now 13 minutes past when they said their presser would start. sigh.

That really looked like an engine blowout. Seemed to go off right between the nozzles and the bottom tank, right where the high speed/very high pressure pumps are.

That’s because you, satanic Americans, have turned away from the Mother Church and don’t let bless your rockets with the Holy Water like the God-fearing Russians do.

Could be a combustion chamber blowout, could be the pump. Catastrophic failure, in any case.

Outsourcing!

Oh, and KC just blew up the Giants in the bottom of the 2nd. Eight hits, seven runs.

According to a CNN bulletin, officials are saying the Ferguson PD police chief is expected to step down. I can only assume because of the hash he made of dealings with the press.

And I’m guessing he’ll keep whatever pension he accrued?

He deserved to be fired - by the city council, mayor, or city manager (or all of the above). No way he should ever have been allowed to stay as long as he has.

Between the immediate aftermath of the shooting to how the protests were handled, law enforcement in Ferguson, St. Louis County, and the greater STL area has shown itself to be awful. And awfully racist.

Can’t wait to hear the reason for why he’s stepping down now, weeks after he utterly fucked up the handling of this case such that the Feds had to step in to conduct their own investigation. Perhaps he’s trying to make a run for it before the failure to indict is announced, leaving the resulting unrest to the next guy in line.

Ok, my inner Comic geek girl is coming out.

I see that Marvel “secretly” announced their next 9 film titles and timelines. I love them all, but I just realized that one of the titles is for Black Panther movie and they cast Chadwick Boseman!!!

Now this psyched me up more than the rest of the announcement, apparently they’ve signed him for 5 films! So I guess that’s 3 possible solo movies (depending on box office i guess) and maybe 2 supporting roles in varied Marvel movies.

My first thought was, ooh, does this mean we get to see a younger Storm (Lupita Nyon’go call your agent), but then I was reminded that X-Men and Storm are owned by Fox and Marvel is owned by Disney. But damn, I cannot imagine a Black Panther story with absolutely NO mention of Storm. I mean they met as kids, and they later married at just about the age that Chadwick Boseman is likely to play.

Damn you contract laws! Hmm, maybe they’ll do like with Quicksilver and use the “real name” rather than mutant name??

Either way, I’m excited. My inner geek girl is happy. This tweet from RDJ has me smiling from ear to ear…lol. Ok, my inner geek is calm now.

Yeah, Black Panther’s one of the films I’m really excited about. Marvel basically looked at DC’s plan to give Cyborg a film in 2020 and laughed. They’ll probably be on the second Panther film by then.

This is what happens when a studio makes a long-term plan for their properties instead of just throwing a bunch of shit at the wall and hoping it sticks.

194 psddluva4evah  Oct 28, 2014 8:54:15pm

to be honest, my only real hope for DC is the Wonder Woman movie. But I’m already not on board with the woman they chose as WW, so strike one. Don’t hate me, but I’ve never actually seen ANY of the Dark Knight movies, so I’m not big Nolan Fan (although, Memento is one of my fav movies), so strike two. Thirdly, I’ve never really been a big DC Comics geek girl, outside of WW and Superman, and I’m still nostalgic for the Chris Reeves era (even though I find Henry Cavill as Supes to be REALLY hot, maybe too hot, it was distracting to say the least), so strike three.

I saw MoS, but to be honest, I will probably only see the next movie to see the new WW chick and well to gaze at Henry Cavill a little bit more…lol

Fox with the X-Men franchise and Sony with the Spider-Man franchise have made it clear that they consider them cash cows and thus won’t be returning the rights anytime soon. Odds are better that they might convince Sony to part with their rights before they convinced Fox to let go of theirs.

She’s Right, she’s Wrong. She’s Right, she’s wrong…

During the 2008 United States presidential election, she branded the Republican Party vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin as “stupid” and a “disgrace to women”. She criticized the former governor of Alaska for her stance on global warming and gun control. She was also offended by Palin’s support for Arctic oil exploration and for her lack of consideration in protecting polar bears.

Some idiots are driving around my county stealing election signs, for Democratic candidates only. I haz such a big surprise! Nope. The good news I suppose is that a Republican caught them on tape but the tape is pretty blurry and you can’t ID who is doing it. They mysteriously left the Republican candidates’ signs alone. More surprise.

I just wish the news people wouldn’t treat this like it’s something new. My Obama signs disappeared both times I had them out. No one gave a shit and it never made the news.

Yeah, especially the ones they stick on the corners where there are traffic lights, those things end up in the road or just the wire frames are left sticking out of the ground. I just don’t get the need for them. People already have their minds made up to the point a bunch of signs isn’t going to do much. I think TV and radio do that job more efficiently. For better or worse.

I think the main reason for them is name recognition and the fact that they are cheaper than radio or T.V. ads. All the ones I’ve seen around here have a web site listed for the candidate as well. All of which is fine with me. I just want them to pick them back up and dispose of them in a responsible manner after the frigging election is over instead of leaving them to rot alongside the road.

I know everyone’s shocked. Shocked that NJ is still not clear on what their quarantine policy is. Despite the governor saying that they haven’t changed their policy since announcing it over the weekend, it’s not clear what even that policy is and who’s formulating it.

That contrasts with the NY policy, which clearly spells out what people should do.

Yet four days after he and the governor of New York announced the 21-day quarantine for high-risk travelers, neither Christie nor state health officials have offered details about how this will be accomplished.

If people are quarantined at home, can their families stay with them and still go out? If they are alone at home, is someone going to bring them food? What about high-risk travelers who are passing through the airport in Newark — should they be allowed to continue to their destination?

Those and many other questions remain unanswered — Christie officials said specifics about how the mandate will be enforced are “internal documents” and are not public.

What’s more, some of the agencies that are supposed to be enforcing the plan say they are uncertain about protocols because no policies have been presented. There is growing frustration, officials said. The Port Authority, for instance, had received no guidance from New Jersey health officials about the state’s Ebola response protocol as of Tuesday afternoon, a person familiar with airport operations said.

“Clarity would be incredibly helpful,” said the person, who requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak about the protocols.

In contrast, New York health officials circulated guidelines for screening at JFK International Airport on Tuesday, in a document that stresses “a respectful and supportive approach” to implementing the quarantine rules. It provides steps for agencies to follow to determine who should be quarantined, where they will stay and even how they will be transported.

And that they haven’t made it public also adds to the legal woes facing the state for trying to enforce a policy that appears to be thrown together with no actual input from health officials or legal staff, despite the Governor putting together a committee that has both health and legal officials involved.

Agreed. Bezos is brilliant in many ways, but he’s not a newspaperman or a journalist and I doubt he really understands what a newspaper *does* or is supposed to do. The Post, back in the day, was one of the USA’s best newspapers, along with the NY Times and WSJ. Today I took part in a junket of sorts with a busload of educators and businessmen touring local industries. We visited a fiber-optics factory founded by a Chinese guy who graduated from the U of Minnesota/Minneapolis, an orange grove that has automated irrigation systems, and a high-grade, “green” chromium refining plant. The supply path of the chromium is interesting. It’s mined and smelted in Kazakhstan, loaded onto railway cars and transported halfway across China to the local railway depot here. Then the ingots (I saw them) are loaded onto trailers and trucked to the refining plant, where the Cr is purified to 99% and resold.

The plant is supposed to be environmentally friendly, and judging from the fairly clean air, fairly successful at it. I could only pick up the slightest whiff of coal fumes and none of the reagents used to refine the Cr.

The purified Cr will eventually end up in jet turbines and other such aerospace stuff, probably around the world.

A type of Overton-window happening in UK politics, as UKIP, which has only one MP in parliament, is steering the discussion:

All this immigration talk is just playing into Ukip’s hands

There is deep disquiet in Westminster after this week’s prime minister’s questions, with MPs on both sides of the House speaking out against their party leaders for helping Ukip.

Ed Miliband’s decision to focus part of his questioning on immigration appears to have divided the party.

Some on the Labour backbenches are staunchly in favour of a stronger stance on the issue and were relieved by the leader’s late arrival to the issue. Those facing a Ukip threat, in particular, seemed delighted.
But others were very, very concerned. One shadow minister compared the state of the debate to “two bald men fighting over a comb”.

[…]

Hmmm, when I think of two bald men and the comb of immigration I think of … Bill OReilly and Donald Trump… for some reason.

Condoleezza Rice endorsed Republican Joni Ernst, saying the Senate needs someone with the candidate’s experience in the Army National Guard. Ernst, a lieutenant colonel in the Guard, has served for more than 20 years in the military and was deployed to Kuwait during the early part of the Iraq War.

“Joni Ernst has dedicated her life to the service of others, bravely leading troops in Iraq and safely bringing them home to Iowa,” Rice said in a statement Wednesday released by Ernst’s campaign. “We need more leaders, like Joni, who understand America’s role abroad and the threat posed against us.”

[…]

Yeah, more fear mongering.

The problem with cold warriors is that they need wars.

re: #308 Vicious Piebola

Fox News in NY had a segment this morning about robots that can scurry around a Lowes (or one of their subsidiaries) providing assistance.

Except that they would be cost prohibitive to buy (even in bulk), and they’d have significant costs to maintain over time - it would take years to recoup especially compared to a person doing the same job (who could also do restocking and other tasks that a robot wouldn’t be able to do).

online.wsj.com

The key takeaway -

The International Federation of Robotics estimates sales of more than 400 robots world-wide between 2014 and 2017 that serve as guides or information providers in places such as supermarkets, exhibitions or museums.

That’s hardly a threat to a wage-earning human.

‘Atheist creationists’ say their study proves there is no Jesus in your communion wafer

A DNA analysis proves that Holy Communion is a “fraud,” according to a hedonistic religious sect that believes humans were created by extraterrestrials about 25,000 years ago.

The Association of Raelian Scientists published a study on October 25 they say refutes the Catholic claim of transubstantiation, in which bread and wine and actually become the physical body and blood of Jesus Christ.

re: #338 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

Media moguls and well-versed politicians know by experience that anger is a useful state in which to keep consumers/voters:

As you become angry your body’s muscles tense up. Inside your brain, neurotransmitter chemicals known as catecholamines are released causing you to experience a burst of energy lasting up to several minutes. This burst of energy is behind the common angry desire to take immediate protective action. At the same time your heart rate accelerates, your blood pressure rises, and your rate of breathing increases. Your face may flush as increased blood flow enters your limbs and extremities in preparation for physical action. Your attention narrows and becomes locked onto the target of your anger. Soon you can pay attention to nothing else. In quick succession, additional brain neurotransmitters and hormones (among them adrenaline and noradrenaline) are released which trigger a lasting state of arousal. You’re now ready to fight.

Isn’t it odd that you say OK Go has the biggest brains in rock (music) based on their great videos?

Many times people wonder why the bands are not as great as back in the day (whatever day was yours!). Those old bands never even thought of what a song should look like visually, they were crafting sound and lyrics.

I am still ambivalent about videos and I sometimes wonder if the visual aspect that seems to be so important didn’t actually hurt the music industry.

I think there are many great new bands that are just as good as those back in the day, but today they seem to be struggling in anonymity. I always wonder if all the emphasis on looks and videos hasn’t hurt the whole scene.

And I did see the OK Go vid. It was nicely done. And they are a good band.

I take it the monster is a web filter? Heh. reddit bad! Here’s the Q&A:

Q: Do you worry that your amazing video work could overshadow your audio work?

A: No. We get this question all the time. But think of it this way. I am a chef. You are in my restaurant. And you are asking me if I am worried by the fact that we are known for our incredible desserts. I am very, very pleased that we have such good desserts, and that they are known around the world for being delicious and singular and unique and unlike anyone else’s desserts. As it turns out, I also make very good main courses. Many people also come and enjoy them. If millions come in for the desserts, and hundreds of thousands also find they like the main course, awesome. There are no bad customers in this restaurant.

See, the question you’re asking basically masks a way of thinking about creativity (or, more accurately, people’s creative careers) that seems… stuck in another century, I guess. That’s the idea that creativity and creative people are supposed to stay in particular boxes that were defined by the way our products used to be distributed. It used to be that music and film and video games and journalism were actually very different physical objects with industries built around selling and distributing them. Now all of us make ones and zeros. I spend my time chasing my creative ideas. My process generally starts with writing songs, but it leads to a lot of other fun places. I feel bad for musicians who get trapped in the box of “music” as it was imagined 30 years ago. Some people like it in that box, but a lot don’t. A lot of people wish they got to chase all of their creative ideas, not just the ones that involve their guitar. I am that lucky guy who is not trapped in that particular box.

Read it. I agree, but he is a little dismissive of others thinking. As an artist I find that a bit arrogant and defensive, but hey…free world! I certainly understand his point. I like multimedia! I also like a good song without a video done by a homely looking artist.

I think the problem goes back to the old pop vs great art thing. The technologies alter exactly where the accusing finger points but IMHO it boils down to something about popular being a constant and greatness that only sometimes overlays the popular. The great stuff is always out there and frankly it our largely fault about the anonymity. Us, the consumer.

We won’t or don’t dig into soundcloud or spotify or pandora very deep. we skim it all. If we dug in some we could take care of anonymity all by ourselves, and do the industry a huge solid.

The media won’t select for great, it selects for popular.

No offense taken!

I consider OK Go to be a very good pop band (their songwriting is consistently very good), but they’re kind of a step beyond that - they’re more conceptual artists who happen to write good pop songs. I have no idea how many records or downloads they sell, but it seems like record sales may not be the entire point with them.

Ever since the ‘treadmill’ video for ‘Here It Comes Again,’ they’ve consistently raised the bar on the visual aspect of their work. Even the concept of that new video is way beyond what I (as a graphic artist and semi-working musician) could conceive. They’re working on an entirely different level than anyone, using their music as a vehicle for ridiculously innovative video, and vice versa. And they embrace technology to a degree that most bands couldn’t imagine.

They’re one of a kind for sure.

On a related note - this piece on Abbey Road Studios hits on a lot of points you made: The Technical Constraints that made Abbey Road so good

Speaking of digging deeper… now taking suggestions for something to listen to while I work today. I’ll try anything as long as it meets two criteria: a) Available on Spotify; and b) not country.

Gotcha, selected these for great bands but songs with a lot less airplay.

Watch for this to get wide coverage by the right wing.

200k+ doctors pull out of Obamacare exchanges.

Doctors don’t work directly with and through an exchange. They’re contracting with insurance companies, who set the reimbursement rates. Some are rebelling against the lower fees that they’re getting from the insurance companies.

But this happens all the time.

Doctors are always fighting with insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid over reimbursement rates - always complaining the reimbursements are too low. Some doctors and medical groups/practices have enough clout (think major hospital centers, prominent doctors) who can have negotiating power to get higher rates, or opt out of insurance entirely, but most will work within the insurance schemes offered.

That’s why we frequently see that hospital X is expected to opt out of insurance company’s Y’s network (and what this means to you) notices. They’re all fighting over reimbursement.

It’s not unusual, and if anything, it highlights just how medical pricing is set - arbitrarily and not grounded on anything other than a price that someone proffered without any basis in quality of coverage (after all, many of the same procedures/tests/consultations are frequently much much less in places like France or Switzerland with the same outcome).

re: #367 makeitstop

Logged back in to thank you for the link about Abbey Road. Bookmarked it for consumption later today.

In regards to comments about popularity of music. If there were better ways to get out new music to more consumers there might well be more popular bands. To some degree popularity is made by media.

Sure would be cool if a lot of reality TV went away and music shows about new bands, the industry, the creative process, live club shows and all that could replace it. I have a feeling once exposed a lot of bands would be way more popular.

One of the things that was great about the 50s, 60s and 70s was music was just so big to those that lived in that time period. There was an importance both artistically and socially and music was literally “where it’s at” during those times.

It just doesn’t seem to have that same place in the sun as it did. Maybe some day songs will again lead social changes and all that emphasis will come back to the art.

Here are a couple videos one from a club called The Basement (The Whigs) and one at the LC Center (Tegan and Sarah) operated by Promo West here in Columbus. Promo West Live is a TV show that is on here in Columbus on Sunday morning at 1:00 to 1:30 AM just after SNL. It is pretty popular and it sure would be nice if it was a full hour or more! This kind of a show (done even better) would go a long way to help the music scene.

Novel is the idea behind the playlist. It’s for submission to the “My Turn” contest at a radio station. If they like your playlist you come in and run it. My favorite on that list is Black Queen. I love that particular version.

They might be worthy, if they ever got on the ballot, but I’ll bet someone would throw in a “sweetener” that had far reaching unintended consequences.
Just look at Prop. 46-it’s supposed to be about reforming medical malpractice and saving innocent children from preventable medical mistakes. It requires doctors to be blood tested for drugs and alcohol after adverse medical outcomes. Really? So why not just stick a port in at least all ER (and maybe all) doctors and draw blood daily, just to check? I can’t imagine how it would work, what purpose it would serve, and who would pay for it.

It really has nothing to do with the original question of suing doctors for errors, which has become Bob Pack’s mission in life (his kids were killed by an impaired driver who got drugs by doctor shopping) and was thrown in to sound good.

Well put. Those sweeteners are usually buried in reams of arcane language and in some instances they’ve been the real reason for the measure. Small clusters of cases of Ebola could overwhelm the system. That sounds pretty bad. What it really shows is that far too many Americans still rely on Emergency Rooms as their primary care provider, rather than personal physicians or urgent care (and urgent care practices are a booming business since hospitals know that this is a major way to divert cases from ERs and can help triage more serious cases from lesser ones).

Ebola didn’t overwhelm Dallas Presbyterian, even though they mishandled the case from initial contact by Duncan. That’s even with two nurses getting infected themselves.

It might be a different story if all of a sudden a dozen people came in within hours of each other showing symptoms of Ebola, but that too can be addressed with protocols for closing ER to non-emergency cases, diverting other trauma to other facilities, etc - and for a place like NYC/Newark, there are a more than a dozen facilities that would be considered Level 1 trauma centers (and many more that can handle major traumas or infectious diseases).

But again, it all overlooks the one indisputable fact - the only way to stop this outbreak is to stop it in Africa, and there still aren’t sufficient resources being provided. Many countries are still not pulling their weight, while a handful are punching well above their weight class - Cuba being one.

It’s set in a fictional logging town in Washington State during the Spanish flu pandemic.
The town leaders decide to quarantine the town by “closing all the borders”.
The quarantine fails as, of course, it was destined to fail…but not by anyone trying to get into the town.

Really, an excellent and prescient cautionary tale. I borrowed an e-reader copy from my local library via overdrive.com.

I read the article too — the context was that it was a ceremony honoring Malala Yousafzai (winner of the Nobel Peace Prize), and the song is all about how fortunate the singer is to have been born in America and how great America is. The accompanying video is full of the usual flags and eagles, apparently.

Malala is, of course, Pakistani. It seems her representatives felt that playing a song about how great America is at a ceremony honoring Malala’s human-rights work in her native Pakistan might be a wee bit too much like rubbing her misfortune at not having been born American in her face.

But but but… she fought for freedom, and America means freedom, so anyone who objects must hate freedom!

I would rather work hard & have my pay actually mean something, rather than have it handed to me just because I’m a woman

Koch Industries: OK, this is pretty good, let’s go with it. Send it out to all our Twitter followers for mass distribution.

I have seen various dipshits online pull out this whole NASA WOULD BE FINE IF THEY DIDN’T HAVE TO PRAISE MUSLIMS nonsense. WTF is all that stupid about?

How cute, they’re using zeros instead of O for Obama. Never mind that the origin of zero is from Islamic mathematicians. And that it’s central to algebra (another Islamic achievement).

Speaking of Raelians, you all caught the big headline, didn’t you?

I think they’re amazed and confused by humans.

Why couldn’t they just say “we’re not including this song in the program because it totally blows”

That’s a little harsh, it was written by a 14 year old girl who was very excited to have Malala see it and I believe traveled to the event from colorado. The event organizers are the ones who screwed the pooch on this to have it pulled last minute like that..

For the record, the song is pretty bad:

Media keeps saying Americans are angry. I have no doubt it’s largely true. But it seems a peculiar time for them to feel so. Very low gas prices, stock market continuing to grow, unemployment dropping, albeit slowly. Housing mostly stabilized.

Wonder if there is something other than Ebola/ISIS that’s got people angry.

After over a decade of being afraid and angry Americans are now uncomfortable when they’re not.

re: #377 ObserverArt

One of the things that was great about the 50s, 60s and 70s was music was just so big to those that lived in that time period. There was an importance both artistically and socially and music was literally “where it’s at” during those times.

It just doesn’t seem to have that same place in the sun as it did. Maybe some day songs will again lead social changes and all that emphasis will come back to the art.

In the 50s, 60s and 70s, every city had their own local scene where dozens and dozens of bands would be heard by everyone and compete against each other… the very best would build enough reputation to break into other markets and spread. Get some press, jump in the van and visit other cities, hope to eventually reach national prominence.

Today, the “local” scene is on-line, worldwide, and there’s still dozens and dozens of bands competing for people’s attention. For the best of the best, the payoff is astronomically more than in previous generations. Because there’s the one huge “scene” instead of thousands of little ones; all the success that used to be spread around is now concentrated.

As for the social significance of artistic expression/lyrical excellence… blogs, podcasts, indie films, self-produced you-tube-distributed comedy/drama/chat products… Jay Smooth matters as much today as any radio DJ ever did.
