Right Wing Blogger Chuck C. Johnson Is Now a Real Live Stalker

Creepy and disturbing behavior
Weird • Views: 77,327

Today at Talking Points Memo, Tom Kludt has a report on our pal Chuck C. Johnson, who has now crossed a major line into outright stalking behavior. The target: yours truly.

After a pitstop for an Italian dinner on Tuesday night, right-wing agitator Charles C. Johnson showed up at what he thought was the residence of his biggest online adversary — a man who just so happens to share his name — and snapped photos of himself standing outside the complex’s gate holding conspiracy theory bumper stickers.

Johnson said he retrieved the address to the Pacific Palisades apartment online.

“At the world headquarters of Little Green Footballs…” Johnson tweeted, appending a hashtag to signify his latest obsession.

Here’s his tweet:

But in Chuck’s usual incompetent way, he went to the wrong place to stalk me.

Little Green Footballs, of course, is the online home of blogger Charles Johnson. But the apartment shown in the tweet hasn’t been his actual home for more than 10 years.

“Actually, when I first saw it I didn’t recognize the place because I haven’t lived there for so long,” Johnson of Little Green Footballs told TPM on Wednesday. “I thought he was just making a joke at first and I looked at it again and realized that’s the place I used to live.”

Here’s how he attempts to justify this threatening behavior; note that it’s extremely common for a stalker to accuse the target of being “the real stalker.”

“The lesser Charles Johnson encouraged his followers to stalk me for daring to report the name of the Ebola nurse, Nina Pham, 12 hours before the rest of the media,” the founder of the fledgling GotNews said in the email. “He’s kind of crazy and I’ve talked to law enforcement about what can be done about his sending stalkers my way. Showing up at his apartment complex door was intended as something of a joke. I knew he would go nuts on Twitter all night, which he promptly did.”

The lies in this statement are numerous:

  1. I never encouraged anyone to "stalk" Chuck. Not once. It didn't happen.
  2. I never "sent stalkers his way," and I seriously doubt he ever "talked to law enforcement." Filing a false police report is a crime.
  3. This was definitely not a joke. It was very obviously intended to scare me, to stop me from criticizing him.
  4. I didn't "go nuts on Twitter all night," although Chuck himself has done this more than once.

Here’s what I told Tom Kludt about this:

The Little Green Footballs founder didn’t find it funny, calling it a “total violation of privacy.”

“For somebody who calls himself a journalist to do something like this, it’s way, way over the line,” he told TPM. “If I had kids, I’d be even more upset. This is basically threatening. The guy has posted pictures of himself holding guns online. It’s a very threatening, stalker-ish thing to do. What can I say? I’m just very upset about it.”

Since this article was published, Chuck is now openly bragging on Twitter about stalking me, saying it was “a joke,” and at the same time repeating his false claims that he’s the real victim.

All I have to add to what I told Talking Points Memo is that if Chuck thought he was going to scare me into shutting up about him, he made a serious miscalculation.

(Note: the tweets above are shown in text form because Johnson’s Twitter account has been suspended and they’re no longer available on Twitter.)

So the guy who claims he was so put off by “stalkers” that he filed a police report purposefully made a trip down to Charles’ old address and took a picture to “make a point”? What was the point, Chucky? That stalking is okay when you do it?

More on former Mayor Menino:

Stung as a boy by disparaging treatment from teachers dismissive of his Italian-American heritage, Mr. Menino stressed in his first mayoral campaign that he would “not tolerate racism. I will never tolerate people being discriminated against.” He opposed bias of any kind, and few gestures were as potent as his decision early on to march in the city’s gay pride parade, while shunning South Boston’s traditional St. Patrick’s Day parade because it banned groups advocating for lesbian and gay rights. Years later, when the state began permitting same-sex marriages on May 17, 2004, Mr. Menino was waiting at City Hall to greet Julie and Hillary Goodridge, who were first in line. As lead plaintiffs, they had lent their name to the state Supreme Judicial Court case that legalized gay marriage six months earlier.

23 KingKenrod  Oct 30, 2014 9:43:38am

Chuck has openly supported convicted serial stalker Francis Shivers, and there are strong parallels between their behavior - laughing off and minimizing creepy behavior, leaving “calling cards”, reverse accusations of stalking, fabricating evidence, and legal threats.

No question this is classic stalking behavior and no laughing matter.

My dear departed Mother, who was a teacher for many years, and later got her doctorate and became a clinical psych working with developmentally disabled and disturbed children has a phrase for people like Chuckie.

I believe that the term she used was “He’s just wacked in the head.”

Not sure it’s listed in the DSM, but it’s accurate.

43 lawhawk  Oct 30, 2014 10:06:23am

Meanwhile, read through Steve Silberman’s responses to getting in the middle of it. He thinks both should walk away (despite finding that what Chuck did was creepy).

No, what Chuck did was criminal - vandalism is but one part. He engaged in stalking behavior, and he has no substantiation of any of the other claims against Charles.

What we do have is a mountain of evidence showing that Charles keeps pointing out all the BS Chuck tweets and posts - lies, smears, and bogus claims about pretty much every hot button topic (all while injecting himself into issues on which he has zero knowledge). And for doing so, Chuck calls him a stalker.

Chuck keeps using that word. It doesn’t mean what he thinks it means.

However, there’s another word that should be used in describing Chuck.

Sociopath. If the definition fits, you must use it. And it does. He doesn’t see what he’s doing is wrong. He’s amoral. He’s ahistorical. And he clearly doesn’t seem to have any problems engaging in criminal activities.

Here you go:

This book will be profoundly uncomfortable to read. It was profoundly uncomfortable to write. It tells the story of IBM’s conscious involvement—directly and through its subsidiaries—in the Holocaust, as well as its involvement in the Nazi war machine that murdered millions of others throughout Europe.

Mankind barely noticed when the concept of massively organized information quietly emerged to become a means of social control, a weapon of war, and a roadmap for group destruction. The unique igniting event was the most fateful day of the last century, January 30, 1933, the day Adolf Hitler came to power. Hitler and his hatred of the Jews was the ironic driving force behind this intellectual turning point. But his quest was greatly enhanced and energized by the ingenuity and craving for profit of a single American company and its legendary, autocratic chairman. That company was International Business Machines, and its chairman was Thomas J. Watson.

Der Führer’s obsession with Jewish destruction was hardly original. There had been czars and tyrants before him. But for the first time in history, an anti-Semite had automation on his side. Hitler didn’t do it alone. He had help.

Sorry for Menino spamming you all :)

Thought this would be interesting to you all:

Other cities and towns in Massachusetts began issuing applications during normal business hours. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino greeted three of the couples who were plaintiffs in Goodridge and said: “We’ve broken down the barrier. I am so proud of these people. I am very proud to be mayor of this city today.” The first to marry in Boston City Hall were Tom Weikle and Joe Rogers, who lined up for their license application at 5:30 a.m. and were wed about 11 a.m. by Boston’s city clerk.

Rejecting the governor’s insistence that the 1913 statute be respected, Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone addressed a crowd of same-sex couples that included several from New York gathered in front of Town Hall at 8 am.: “No matter who you are or where you come from, if you fill out the application, you will be given a license to marry. Those of you from out of state, welcome to Somerville.”

Anyone care to guess who the governor bolded above was?

Free Dictionary definition #2

base 2 (bs)
adj. bas*er, bas*est
1.
a. Having or showing a contemptible, mean-spirited, or selfish lack of human decency. See Synonyms at mean2.
b. Devoid of high values or ethics: a base, degrading way of life.

Backpfeifengesicht=literally, “Fart Face”

I don’t speak German, but this seems dubious to me. I know pfeifen means to pipe or whistle, but the online dictionaries all translate Backpfeife as a dialectical term for “a slap in the face.” The link I posted earlier says this:

The origin of the word is unclear, but Backpfeife was used in northern Germany throughout the 19th century and comes from Backe (“cheek”) and Pfeife (“whistle”) - and basically means “a slap that whooshes/whistles along the cheek”.

Another version is that Pfeife here is a distorted Feige, as in Ohrfeige (“ear fig”), slap.

Herkunft:

That they agree she shouldn’t have been imprisoned, but think she’s in the wrong because she wants to get on with her life instead of remaining a prisoner in her own home to make her neighbors feel “safe.”

Christ, it’s like hearing otherwise rational people saying that a rape victim whose identity has been splattered all over by the press is not believable because she “wanted attention.”

Thinking the same thing. “How many dudebros does it take to slime a former co-worker?”

I don’t know, but it may get him riled enough to tell the truth behind that little enterprise of theirs.

Fast zombies was actually one of the more subversive things he did in the remake - take the old trope and give it new life. Now, these just weren’t shambling corpses, but corpses that could move with dangerous and tremendous speed.

It added yet another layer of danger to the whole situation for the survivors.

I’ll give him credit for that - compared with let’s say ludicrous attempts to remake vampires (think sparkly and forever doomed to repeating the high school years, though having powers to alter reality, inflict pain, sense the future, hyper-speed, and telekinesis are pretty good).

“…The lack of autonomous budgets, for instance, meant that in many cases Omidyar was personally signing off on—and occasionally objecting to—employee expense reports for taxi rides and office supplies.”

Hah. Insanity. Taibbi was right to leave based on this alone.

204 lawhawk  Oct 30, 2014 12:26:39pm

Here’s a much more in depth piece about what’s going on with First Look, Taibbi, and the whole enterprise Omidyar put together. Of particular note, despite the $250 million he said he’d put up for bringing the new media outlet to fruition, he’s decided to scale things back significantly.

Taibbi’s absence is only the latest in a series of shifts inside First Look, which Omidyar founded last year, originally in response to the disclosures of NSA surveillance leaked by Edward Snowden to Greenwald and his Intercept colleague Laura Poitras. Omidyar initially committed $250 million to the project and began laying plans for a large general interest website and a number of more narrowly focused “digital magazines.” In July, the billionaire announced he was scaling back the plan for the time being, choosing instead to focus on Racket and the Intercept as prototypes for a new technological model of journalism. The Intercept has lately been publishing vigorously, breaking several major stories — federal investigators are reportedly pursuing the alleged leaker responsible for a story on the site about the government’s voluminous terrorist watch list. But Racket has been much slower to materialize, leading to rumors of staff anxiety.

In August, Temple told me Taibbi’s site was experimenting with a variety of journalistic approaches — not just satire and humor but also investigative journalism. For instance, Ellen Miller, head of the campaign finance watchdog the Sunlight Foundation — a nonprofit also heavily financed by Omidyar — met with the staff over the summer to discuss how it might dig into issues of money in politics.

The fact is that they aren’t publishing much of anything of substance, and are rehashing much of what they’ve run previously hoping to sex it up into a new story of outrage. And it just isn’t working.

Cliffs Notes version:

Everyone who works for FLM is a giant dick. Matt was accused by one of his employees as being a misogynist (read his stuff while in Russia about Russian girls, he is). Pierre nickel and dimed them, questioning taxi expenses. FLM realized Matt was not a manager & tried to make him a writer. Matt pouted. Intercept guys admit that Pierre is a douche but they can live with that now.

Wait, it took all of them to write a piece about Taibbi getting canned?

Well, they had to take turns patting each other on the back for what a swell job they themselves are doing, while referring to themselves and their many accomplishments in the third person.

Many journalism
Such exceptional
Very objectivity

For all the money and all the “talent” they have over yon at the Intercept, it is an incredibly ugly website.

With Taibbi gone, there’s room there for CCJ. We could send a reference.

To me, fast zombies were always a contradiction. The classic Romero zombie was based upon logic, that a corpse is not going to move fast because it’s dead. Max Brooks with The Zombie Survival Guide even took it further and explained in pretty clear ways why a fast zombie makes no sense. Sure, it adds to the danger and suspense, but it also runs the risk of making a zombie film into another retread of 28 Days Later.

Chuck’s self-proclaimed victimhood over being “stalked” on twitter by lizards gives him exactly what he wants: notoriety and street cred with tcot and its huge contingent of deranged RW baggers. His blogging is almost self-parody, but it works in today’s reactionary fever swamp of paranoia and apocalypticism.

Four US cases of ebola and three American journalists killed by ISIS. Terrible, but not a sign of the end times or even the end of America as the world’s hegemonic power. But looking at ISIS and ebola with a sober eye doesn’t work for shameless opportunistic hucksters like Chuck. The “threat” has to be ratcheted up to 11 or else it’s not controversial and scary enough to make for good TV/internet entertainment.

Yeah, you can just feel the influence of the risk-management lawyers in every goddamn sentence of that piece. All the statements in it are coached in careful vague-speak so as to not make good exhibits in the soon-to-be-unveiled Wrongful Termination Suit.

re: #200 Charles Johnson

After months of struggle and negotiation, The Intercept has arrived at the point where it can function effectively: with full editorial freedom and an ample budget. But First Look and Taibbi failed to reach a similar mutual understanding. Those two radically different outcomes underscore the ongoing difficulty of finding the ideal model for well-funded independent journalism.

Looks like Taibbi wasn’t willing to kiss ass, grovel & scrape as much as GG and company do.
