Maine Judge Lifts Mandatory Quarantine on Ebola Nurse Kaci Hickox

Somebody’s confused
Health • Views: 43,006

I love it when the media publish two completely contradictory reports; in this case, it’s about the state of Maine’s attempt to impose a mandatory quarantine on nurse Kaci Hickox, in which Judge Charles C. LaVerdiere has ruled… something.

The Associated Press says: Judge Rejects Ebola Quarantine for Nurse.

FORT KENT, Maine (AP) — A Maine judge on Friday rejected a bid by state health officials to restrict the movement of nurse Kaci Hickox, who defied a state quarantine for medical workers who have treated Ebola patients.

Judge Charles C. LaVerdiere ruled that Hickox should continue daily monitoring and coordinate travel with state officials so monitoring can continue. But, because she’s not showing symptoms, the judge says she’s not infectious.

But the New York Times says: Maine Judge Orders Ebola Quarantine for Nurse.

FORT KENT, Me. — The State of Maine has issued a court-ordered quarantine, requiring a nurse who treated Ebola patients in West Africa to stay in her hometown, avoid public transit and businesses, and remain at least three feet away from others when outdoors.

The order was signed on Thursday by Judge Charles C. LaVerdiere, the chief judge for the Maine District Courts who serves on courts in Kennebec and Somerset County.

Either these are two completely different takes on the same ruling, or one of them has it really wrong. This is actually funny in a way, but also pretty pathetic when the subject is something this important. Hopefully they’ll get their stories straight soon.

UPDATE at 10/31/14 10:22:38 am by Charles Johnson

CNN adds to the confusion: Maine Judge Orders Quarantine for Nurse Kaci Hickox.

A Maine judge on Friday ruled that state health officials failed to prove the need for an order enforcing an Ebola quarantine for a nurse who defied the quarantine in a tense standoff with state authorities. District Court Chief Judge Charles LaVerdiere ordered nurse Kaci Hickox, who recently returned to the United States after treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone, to submit to “direct active monitoring,” coordinate travel with public health officials and immediately notify health authorities should symptoms appear. Her attorney, Norman Siegel, called the decision a victory. On Thursday, the judge had ordered stricter limits on Hickox.

So it seems as if the judge ordered a quarantine yesterday, then reversed the decision today. Oh, my aching head. I think the media are giving me Ebola.

UPDATE at 10/31/14 10:35:10 am by Charles Johnson

And now the New York Times has a new report about the reversal: In About-Face, Maine Judge Lifts Ebola Quarantine on Nurse.

FORT KENT, Me. — Less than a day after confining a nurse who treated Ebola victims to her house, a judge in Maine has lifted the quarantine, rejecting arguments by the State of Maine that the measure was necessary to protect the public.

Within an hour of the decision, state troopers who had been parked outside the nurse’s house for days had left.

The order, signed on Friday by Judge Charles C. LaVerdiere, the chief judge for the Maine District Courts who serves in Kennebec and Somerset counties, said the nurse, Kaci Hickox, “currently does not show symptoms of Ebola and is therefore not infectious.”

Seems like he still ordered some restrictions on her, but not the full quarantine the state wanted to impose on her for no reason.

Mostly off topic but it does have to do with the rule of law:

This caught my eye:

MILWAUKEE POLICE VOTE ‘NO CONFIDENCE’ IN CHIEF

Milwaukee police have taken a vote that expresses no confidence in their chief after he fired a white officer who shot and killed a black man in a downtown park.

Union president Mike Crivello announced Friday that about 99 percent of the votes expressed no confidence in Chief Edward Flynn.

[…]

Officers are angry over the firing of Christopher Manney, who shot 31-year-old Dontre Hamilton on April 30. Hamilton had been sleeping in the park. The two struggled during a pat down and Hamilton grabbed the officer’s baton and struck him in the neck. Manney then shot Hamilton 14 times.

Flynn said he fired Manney for instigating the fight.

I think this takes the whole brotherhood-of-police thing way too far. Group-think is always troublesome, but I find it particularly so when it comes to police.

I’m still waiting for NJ to proffer their Ebola committee to state that they backed Gov. Christie’s draconian quarantine policy (which he says didn’t change, but it did over the past weekend). They’ve been silent since being formed.

The quarantines, and the public calls for them, are based not on science or facts, but on fear and hysteria.

There is one case. One case only. [now imagine hearing that in Sean Connery’s voice from Hunt for Red October]

In the entire US, there’s one current case. That’s it. About 200 people are being watched, but each day that passes, that number will slowly drop.

And once Dr. Spencer hopefully recovers, it will be 42 days after that that the WHO can declare the US Ebola-free; Nigeria did that a few weeks back, as did Senegal.

All the while, there have been dozens of firearms deaths, flu deaths, and other preventable deaths. But Ebola is the thing that the politicians think people want to hear about (all while claiming that the health experts don’t know what they’re talking about - or worse - actively citing to movies to bolster their hysterical/fearful disbelief in the CDC, NIH, USAMRIID, NSF, etc.

I’m actually proud to be American. I know it doesn’t come off that way at times, but I do really care what happens to this country.

This is why I get so pissed off when I see how we as a nation (supposedly one of the greatest epicenters of knowledge, science and medicine known to man) collapse into a quivering mass of concentrated fear despite mountains of hard evidence saying otherwise.

As a NJ resident, my state’s connection to all this has been especially depressing. First, our governor embraced both his trademark abrasive bullying and his party’s hatred of science to try humiliate a volunteer Ebola worker into submission.

Second: that South Jersey town that freaked out over the two kids who visited Rwanda improbably infecting their elementary school with Ebola? It’s pretty much the land of my ancestors. If you know anything about that town, you would not be the least surprised by the reaction.

Pro tip: the kids having Ebola wasn’t the only thing pissing off the residents. I’ll let you do the math on that one.

Which, of course, links to infowars. DONOTLINKed:

The Centers for Disease Control is looking to purchase body bags and a host of other personal protective equipment in response to the Ebola outbreak as concerns continue to linger about the spread of the virus.

A “sources sought” notice posted on FedBizOpps reveals that, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Procurement and Grants Office (PGO) is seeking multiple sources of supply for personal protective equipment (PPE) for potential use in the current Ebola Virus Disease outbreak response.”

According to an attachment entitled “List of Personal Protective Equipment for Sources Sought Notice,” the federal agency is looking to source suppliers of body bags that can hold 200-250 lbs of weight. The bags must also include, “At least 6 handholds included in the body bag to allow burial team to hand carry it safely.”

The advisory states that the body bags and other equipment are intended to be used both in West Africa and in response to other Ebola outbreaks worldwide.

The CDC is also looking to source surgical face masks, sterile gowns, infectious waste containers, and tarps amongst other PPE supplies. The notice does not specify the quantity of body bags that the CDC is looking to obtain.

Wait. What?

The purchase is to combat the Ebola outbreak in West Africa - along with PPE gear to avoid further infection of health workers, who have been hard hit due to lack of critical gear.

That warrants a Drudge? These guys are paranoid that they wont bother reading past the headline.

And that comes on the heels of unverified claims that 250,000 hazmat suits were sent to Dallas after the single case was identified there (Duncan) and the subsequent infection of two nurses.

Area 51 scientist’s deathbed video: UFOs are real, aliens have federal jobs

In one of the most extraordinary and strange deathbed confessions ever, an Area 51 scientist and career government worker recently left behind a video revealing supposed federal secrets that are nothing short of a conspiracy theorist’s dream come true. The Inquistr reported Oct. 28 that Boyd Bushman, a highly accredited aerospace scientist and the holder of numerous innovative patents, decided to come clean in his last hours and record what he knew about the U. S. government’s dealings with aliens and its secret UFO program. Perhaps most astonishing of all, though, was his revelation that not only were UFOs real, but that 18 extraterrestrials were currently working for the U. S. government.

Taibbi Returns To Rolling Stone Days After Leaving eBay Founder’s Startup

A spokeswoman for Wenner Media, the publisher of Rolling Stone, told The Guardian that Taibbi will have a “big piece” in the forthcoming issue of the magazine where he worked for more than 15 years.

What do you want to bet this “big piece” is something Omidyar refused to publish and that’s the source of the split?

The two African-American ladies are Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis from “The Help” and someone Photoshopped the slasher figure behind them.

Yep…and I Photoshopped the Photoshop!

It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

By the way, I remember the name of the movie “The Help” but I have never viewed it. Was it any good?

This is worth the read seeing as how it is 31 October. It runs the full gamut of bad Halloween punnery in just the first two paragraphs.

Worth the time on cable, but I’m glad I didn’t buy a theater ticket for it.

Like “Mississippi Burning” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” and several other liberal white writer stories, the black characters’ lives aren’t even the center of their own stories, they’re just a mechanism for the valiant white hero to make a point…

How appropriate that on Halloween, a judge reverses the decisions made at the Salem Witch Trials. The State can’t come down on you just because of fear — there has to be some actual medical science. Witches didn’t cause the Parris girls’ “fits” and Nurse Wilcox isn’t spreading Ebola.

152 Fortitudine  Oct 31, 2014 8:55:19pm

Active monitoring =/= quarantine.

If you go to the CDC website, you can search for “Interim guidance on monitoring and movement for persons with potential Ebola exposure.” Table 1 explains exactly what the risk categories are and what level of monitoring or confinement is recommended.
