The Title of Jim Hoft’s Latest Fear-Mongering Post Is Debunked by His Own Post

The idiocy. It burns.
Wingnuts • Views: 43,432

The mindless, dishonest fear-mongering never stops. The Dumbest Man on the Internet is relentless. And now, his latest tactic is to use a title that’s completely belied by the actual article he’s quoting; he obviously knows his knuckle-dragging audience of right wing goons aren’t going to read or care about that: Nurse Roommate of Kaci Hickox Developed Ebola | the Gateway Pundit.

Oh NOEZ! Her roommate in Africa got Ebola?! [run around screaming] [light hair on fire] [flip desk]

THIS IS HORRIBLE WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE NOW!!!

Oh wait. The article actually says Hickox is long out of the danger zone for catching the virus.

The roommate of CDC nurse Kaci Hickox developed Ebola displayed signs [sic] of Ebola.

WAGM TV reported, via PJ Media:

Sheila Pinette of the Maine CDC has released information that the roommate of Kaci Hickox, while in West Africa has displayed signs of ebola. Pinette says “The respondents roommate in Africa became infected without knowing how she became infected with Ebola. (Any potential risk to respondent from that incident has passed).” This is one of 35 points Pinette made while filing a verified petition for public health order yesterday with the state. Kaci Hickox was issued temporary court order.

Oh well, never mind. Just another day in the stupid, hateful life of Jim Hoft.

Jim just moves right on to another fear story. They’re pumping this poison out 24/7 in the right wing blogosphere.

Woman Visiting From Liberia Hospitalized in Portland Area Being Tested for Ebola | OregonLive.com

Since arriving in Portland, the woman had been taking her temperature twice and day and reporting to the county. Until Friday, it had been normal, said Dr. Katrina Hedberg, state health officer. But in the morning it spiked.

“It got our attention because it was was over 102 degrees,” said Dr. Paul Lewis, health officer for Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties.

The county sent medical professionals to her home, including Dr. Jonathan Jui, Multnomah County’s emergency services medical director. Dressed in full protective gear, from his head to fingertips to toes, he examined her and decided she should be hospitalized.

She was taken to Milwaukie, which is fully staffed for treating an Ebola patient. Underriner said she was ushered into the hospital through a “secured” pathway far from other patients.

She is now in isolation there.

Physicians will draw a blood sample, then triple package it according to biohazard regulations for shipment to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. That process could take a day, Lewis said. The test results themselves take a few hours.

The people who were staying in the same household have agreed to stay at home under self-quarantine while the woman’s status is up-in-the-air, Lewis said. The woman had been free to travel around the city before Friday.

“This person was at low risk,” Hedberg said. “She did not have any known contact with Ebola patients in those countries.”

Agreement reached to keep Ebola waste ashes out of Louisiana

Attorney General Buddy Caldwell announced Friday the state had reached a deal to keep Ebola waste ashes out of a Lake Charles landfill.

Caldwell got a temporary restraining order to keep Texas incinerator Veolia Environmental Services from disposing of the ashes at Louisiana hazardous waste landfill run by Chemical Waste Management.

The ashes were all that remained of the incinerated belongings of Thomas Eric Duncan, who died of the Ebola virus in Dallas. Though the ashes posed no risk to humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control, Caldwell argued too many things were unknown about the virus to risk bringing it to Louisiana.

What do these women have in common?

Sadly, that fact that I’d never heard of any of them until they were on the receiving end of scores of disgusting harassment. Well, add one more name to the list: game developer Brianna Wu (pictured). A few weeks ago she retweeted a couple “Oppressed GamerGater” memes, images of a child throwing a tantrum accompanied by phrases such as “This is about corruption. *Tweets 500 things attacking women” and “Fighting an apocalyptic future… where women are 8% of programmers and not 3%.”

Some of the responses she received were scary enough to drive her from her home, something that Sarkeesian and Quinn have also experienced.

A week later, Wu came back and came back pissed. “I have to be honest. A mob telling you they will castrate your husband, make you choke to death on the parts, murder any children you might have and then rape your ass until it bleeds has a way of scaring the hell out of you,” Wu wrote at xojane.com. “But, you know, because I am the Godzilla of bitches, by Saturday morning I was pissed off. I’m talking Jack Bauer pissed off. So, I decided I was going to do everything in my power to stop these fuckers.”

So, Louisiana will accept nuclear/radioactive wastes. They’ll accept waste from oil and gas drilling.

All of which is known to be dangerous.

But EBOV that has been incinerated and is no longer a threat? That’s not allowed.

My husband will probably say that about this outfit but I think he’s the only one.

That’s why I married him though. :D

So twitter sent my email a flood of duplicate notifications, over 4400 of them and filled my inbox. They then suspended my account because mail started bouncing back and they decided that meant my email address wasn’t valid. Sigh…

Five hours later everything is finally fixed, had to create another email account just to link it to twitter and verify it so I could then change it back to the old account and verify that one. (after cleaning it out)

All email from twitter is now turned off completely…

Been watching the “Hornblower” series again, on Youtube of all places.

I really liked the mini-series when it first came out, mainly because they stuck to the books and didn’t ruin it by trying to add too much drama. I only wish they had made more of them, the eight episodes only really cover what was in the first three books.

My kids got to trick-or-treat in a neighborhood full of nice houses on postage stamp yards close together for the first time. Well the rain didn’t slow down the trick or treaters. So far a total of 54 and still counting for another half hour. Fortunately, the heavy rain came in half hour segments. When the rain stopped the kids were out in force. Do Elsa’s have to be dressed in blue? None in blue but 3-4 in similar outfits but different colors. Also noticed several older kids had well thought out costumes. Noticed one oddity. We left the main door open and the storm door closed. One kid, by himself, just came to the door, opened the storm door, came in and helped himself to the candy in the bowl without knocking or ringing the bell. My wife was astonished!

I always wonder why people feel the need to gild the lily. What he said was bad enough to report the truth.

Compare what he said:

“We already have six blacks, what, do you want the seventh for me?”

with what is reported in the “translation”:

“enough dark-skinned players, we’ve got six of the things” .

I tell my students that translation and interpretation are both art and science, and must be done carefully to avoid misinterpretation by the other party. There are times when a literal translation suits the occasion, and others when paraphrasing is better. I’d have used a more literal translation of the coach’s remarks here, because it captures his meaning better.

Casual racism is bad on its own, and although it is very widespread in Russia, quite a lot of Russian sport news sources are reporting on Gamula’s remark, which is a good thing.

Turning a casually racist coach into a full-blown Klansman through false reporting of his already racist words (claiming that he referred to black players as “things” or in any way connected them to Ebola) is bad journalism.

Nor do I, but several thousand Africans live in Guangdong province, mostly in Guangzhou, where there’s a “Little Africa” part of town. They live by buying cheap products in China, and selling them at mark-up back home. Others work as English teachers. But Chinese don’t know what to make of them. They figure all of Africa still lives in the hunter-gatherer stage.

Internationalism was a matter of official Soviet ideology. Such powerful anti-racist statements like the final scene of Circus (1936) were what the Soviets were growing up with. Yet the Soviet way of “teaching” internationalism was a giant failure, with people paying lip service to it like they did with Lenin’s teachings, but not taking it all too seriously. This in turn led to the problems with nationalism that Russia has today.

PS: in that scene you can see Solomon Mikhoels singing to little Patterson in Yiddish. In 1948 the antisemitic paranoiac Stalin had him murdered. So much for Soviet internationalism.

I’ll say this again. Autism doesn’t create assholes. Yes there are people with autism who are assholes. But they would have been assholes anyway without the autism. If anything, every autistic person I’ve ever met is more empathetic to other people, not less. It’s just the communication and social skills aren’t there to express it they way others do. More than a few people use the excuse of “being on the spectrum” to pardon their bullshit. We have to stop letting them get away with it.

People on the spectrum have a tough enough time dealing with stereotypes like this one, can we stop perpetuating those? My son is suffering as a direct result of these sort of misconceptions, it’s difficult and heartbreaking. He’s not retarded, not without empathy, not blind to the needs of others. If anything he’s so starved for approval he’ll put up with more shit from people than is healthy. Predatory assholes like CCJ are the kind of people that have made my kid’s life hell, he doesn’t get to use autism as an excuse for that too. Fuck him.

“It is very disturbing,” said parent Kimberley Ashcraft.

Ashcraft told 10 On Your Side the disturbing incident happened a couple weeks ago. Her daughter told her about the conversation with math teacher Cynthia Ramsey.

“That’s when she conveyed to me that Mrs. Ramsey had indicated that if she only had 10 days to live that she would kill all black people,” Ashcraft told wavy.com.

Ashcraft’s daughter was in Ramsey’s classroom eating lunch. Ashcraft said there were several others students around when Ramsey allegedly made the racist remarks.

My Ukrainian neighbors (exchange teachers) filled me in last weekend on how things are in their hometown of Lugansk. Tanya said bombs were going off around her while she was there this summer. Her parents have moved out of the city to a rural location, but they have no water or electricity. Natalya’s family is also without utilities. Lugansk is a combat zone, they say.

Meanwhile, their employer, University of Lugansk, is no longer in operation. So, they have no jobs waiting for them if they go back. Because their uni is out of commission, our Chinese university is not sure if the faculty exchange can be renewed, and thus, their work visas are in jeopardy. In other words, they can’t work here after June 1, and if they go home, they don’t have jobs.

The only consolation on that point is that both Ukraine and Russia have fairly good Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) capabilities. Because of leftover munitions from WWII, they have needed such capabilities.

What I was also referring to was that *internally* Fascism was always a greater threat to the US than Communism.

And I disagree. Neither was a major takeover threat. The real danger was from spying and subversion. An outright totalitarian takeover in the USA would have been (and would be now) a very hard thing to do.

That’s a damn good question and my answer is this. I think the GOP of the early 50’s during the height of the second Red Scare (remember the first one was in the Wilson years following the Bolshevik revolution) was a party that had lost the past five presidential elections. This was a party on the verge of almost extinction on the national electoral level. They saw something that they knew they could get votes with and scare people with and it worked. And it’s how we got McCarthy, Nixon, and many others in high office. It took the fear of Communists underneath the covers and perhaps the most apolitical presidential candidate in Eisenhower to get back into the WH.

re: #283 Feline Fearless Leader

Because Communism was a perceived threat at some level for a longer time, from 1917- to 1989. Compared with that 72 year timespan, Fascism was only a perceived threat from 1933-1945. Moreover, the leading Fascism nation, Nazi Germany was comprehensively defeated in war and its defeat caused Fascism to be seen as a failure. Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, no powerful Communist state ever suffered the same level of defeat (nor could they, given the USSR and China’s possession of nuclear weapons).

Anyhow, I would agree that fascism was always more of a danger happening here than communism. Communism really never had a shot here. I think in part because we never had as strong the system that has your birth determining your lot. From the Age of Jackson onward, there was an idea that anyone could make it. Fascism on the otherhand, we had groups like the KKK and in the 19th century the Know Nothings. I see now that we’re talking about direct threats to the US itself but I really do think fear of communism taking over the US was way overblown in the 50’s and 20’s. And it sucks to see those kind of scare tactics making a comeback over two decades after the fall of the USSR.

It was also that the Democrats had been lax in keeping Communist spies out of the government. While McCarthy was mostly spouting hot air, Richard Nixon rose to national prominence by going after Alger Hiss, who was indeed proved to be a Soviet spy.

Right. Definitely. Actually, the Army-McCarthy Hearings were mostly about something much more pedestrian: Roy Cohn’s attempts to gain special privileges for a former committee staffer who had been drafted. Joe McCarthy’s dependance of Cohn was what moved him into Joseph Welch’s sights. Had McCarthy denounced and fired Cohn, it is unlikely the hears would have happened.

Indeed, its the sort of thing that can get a later press helmet perforated by rounds of the same 7.62x54R caliber.

Though those rounds would likely be the 200-grain match-grade rounds used by snipers instead of the 148-grain rounds machine guns use.

Not back then it wasn’t. The market crash hit the high as well as the middle and the low. It didn’t hit them as much, but it did hurt. There was a reason many rich people supported FDR: Sometimes its the burned hand that teaches best.

There was of course also the fact that FDR did not face an opponent who was really suited to being president until he faced Thomas Dewey in 1944. And by then people did not want to change leaders in the middle of a war we were winning.

Safety nets prevent a lot of base unrest from occurring, or getting very far, in the first place. Reduces the effects of some injustices, and there is not an accumulation of people in the gutter with nothing to lose and becoming the tinder just awaiting the right spark.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was, after all, one of the 3 presidents whom all serious historians of both left and right agree merits the rating of “Great”. As a late 1990’s National Review article rating the presidents put it, “Whatever one thinks of him [FDR], how can he not be called ‘great’?”

A lesson that China once learned, then forgot. There are no equivalents here for Social Security or Medicare, much less a national health system, which means those only children of aging parents are really feeling the squeeze. It’s called the 1-2-4 problem: one kid, two parents, four grandparents. So long as the Chinese economy keeps chugging along and people can find jobs, there will be little unrest. I think Hoover and Landon lacked the understanding to the economic problems that the country.faced. Wilkie I think would have found himself in over his hand. Guy had never been elected to anything before or appointed to a high position like Eisenhower or Grant and as we’ve seen with generals, they can be greats like Washington or they can fail like Grant. Dewey in ‘44 I think still did not understand the world around us. In ‘48, I think he did but Truman was better suited for the job by then. Anyhow, FDR for all his faults I think is a top president. People who hate the New Deal as I got at above don’t appreciate the real troubles the country faced when FDR took power.

The winds here in Metro Atlanta are kicking up to 50MPH sustained at some points. It’s also supposed to freeze tonight. So, because I am behind on EVERYTHING right now, I had forgot I left all the terra cotta pots outside. Some of them belonged to my grandmother and I wanted to make sure they didn’t freeze and crack. So The Kid and I went out to gather them up and put them in the garden shed. I missed getting hit in the head by a fairly large branch that snapped off one of the 60 yr old maples in the back yard by about 3 inches.

More on the Right hate FDR than admire him, though he has gained some defenders there, most notably Conrad Black.

Really, what that article I quoted from represented was the same attitude for FDR that Ronald Reagan had had for the remaining New Deal programs: Acceptance. I myself would define this acceptance as follows:

As a conservative, I wish the Franklin Roosevelt administration had pursued a less top-down and more market friendly approach to many of the nation’s problems. But also I understand and accept why FDR in fact acted as he did. Perhaps others in American history could have done better, but they weren’t there at the time. And FDR did well enough to get America through the Great Depression intact, and then led the nation to victory in the largest war it has ever fought.

Owning to these factors, and the fact that some New deal programs have proven very durable, the public now sees them as an integral part of the political and economic landscape. It was no less a person than Dwight D. Eisenhower whom Ronald Reagan quoted when explaining why he would not move against Social Security: “If a high-placed person were to propose doing away with Social Security, you would never again hear from that person.”

Correction for accuracy. Blackwater was always involved in the boots on the ground side of things, and never had direct access to intelligence data. Booze Allen Hamilton, while a much-better behaved and more honest firm, is the one that hired Edward Snowden as a contractor.

I look at it like this. I think FDR saw that those were desperate times and that desperate times called for desperate measures. Many of his conservative detractors at that time I think had a blind faith that the markets would just fix themselves. They also didn’t accept the fact that this was the worst economic castaprophe the country had faced. We had faced panics before but nothing like the Great Depression.

…and as we’ve seen with generals, they can be greats like Washington or they can fail like Grant. Dewey…

Grant was not a failure. That’s revisionist history pushed by Confederates, pissed off because his 1875 Civil Rights Act had real teeth to it, he had the US Army doing battle with the Klan (and winning overwhelmingly) and was making Reconstruction a real thing. Southerners couldn’t stand that.

re: #331 bratwurst

Don’t worry…plenty on the right still vilify him on a regular basis. Glenn Beck in particular has made assassinating the character of both presidents Roosevelt a major theme for a long time now. We also got a lot of idiotic remarks from right wing punditry during the Ken Burns PBS series.

Oh I know it. Just funny to see a certain conservative publication say that. Hell though Beck hates on Lincoln. But then again Lincoln hatred by the right has become a surprisingly popular pastime these past six years. I wasn’t even aware of it. I really thought the only people who hated Lincoln were neo-Confederate whiners who still aren’t over a war that ended 149 years ago but there’s a lot of people on the right that hate Lincoln.

Fair point. Grant is a lot better than given credit for.

No, if that were the case, I’d be a nervous wreck. Instead, I’m sure whatever it was is non-vital, but something I wanted to get done.

Not to worry, it’ll come back to you just as you’re about to fall asleep tonight.

People in his own administration had that faith.

One cabinet secretary: “We don’t need to do much, the economy will recover on its own within a couple of years.”

Another cabinet secretary: “People don’t need to eat in a couple of years. They need to eat TODAY. They need to eat EVERY day.”

You’re fine, Kilroy, and your point is well made.

Makes it all the more amazing he was able to get done what he got done. I agree with the Burns documentary though that Polio gave FDR a real empathy with the nation’s downtrotten that he might otherwise have never had.

It’s easy enough to understand this. When the GOP engaged in the southern strategy, they imported a large dose of lost-cause neo Confederacy along with the disgruntled racists they were courting.

That dose of poison has been spreading through the party since then, and it remains to be seen if it will be fatal for the party (or country).

Right, the Southern Strategy I think is when the GOP really started to become the twisted right wing party we know today. All starts with Nixon being desperate to regain power.

re: #319 Dark_Falcon

As a late 1990’s National Review article rating the presidents put it, “Whatever one thinks of him [FDR], how can he not be called ‘great’?”

Dunno about that DF. One of the big tropes that goes around GOP media is a constant denigration of FDR, usually based on assumptions that he instituted a form of communism here at home, extended the Great Depression and wasn’t sufficiently stalwart against the Nazis and made a pact with Stalin that sold out Eastern Europe. But mostly based on a deep hatred of the New Deal … mostly out of ignorance of what the alternative would have been. Which was pretty much Huey Long, national implosion and Weimar Republic-like poverty and unrest.

(snip) FDR did well enough to get America through the Great Depression intact, and then led the nation to victory in the largest war it has ever fought.

One of the little-appreciated factors in the winning of WWII is the fact that we had so much modern infrastructure that helped us win that war. We did not win it because of the excellence of our soldiers (although they were brave in the main, still, the German soldier inflicted 13x casualties, while by the end of the war, the number of US soldiers that had gone AWOL and were busy profiteering in Europe was uncomfortably high). We won WWII because we were able to call upon US manufacturing might to bury the Axis powers.

And we were able to do so because we had a trained workforce. Trained in CCC and WPA job programs. Coal and steel rolling on modern railroads. Trucks on paved roads. All Improved by FDR. Plane, tank and A-bomb designers trained at gov’t funded schools. Food production (by farmers like my grampa) able to take up the slack because they had survived by working in the CCC during the winter.

If we had gone to war with Germany and Japan with the country that Hoover left us, we would be a slave state right now.
