About Former CBS News Reporter Sharyl Attkisson’s Ridiculous “Hacking” Video

Oh please

[Attkisson has deleted her ludicrous video from YouTube.]

There are so many deranged stories coming out of the right wing these days that it’s hard to keep up; so I just caught up on the latest ridiculous allegations by former CBS News reporter Sharyl Attkisson.

Attkisson released a video that she says shows her computer being “hacked” by super-secret government agents, trying to stop her courageous reporting on Benghazi. There’s her video, up above.

Attkisson’s claims are utterly ludicrous, folks. If some unknown entities actually had access to this computer, they’d simply wipe her files — not simulate the Delete key right in front of her eyes while she was working. In fact, this is such a brain-dead claim that I’m amazed anyone actually takes it seriously.

What’s probably happening in this video is a stuck Delete key. Maybe she was eating too many potato chips and crumbs got lodged in her keyboard. Or maybe there’s some kind of software conflict. Or maybe she outright faked this video; it wouldn’t be difficult. But this is not how “hacking” works.

Ya know, Ms. Attkisson? I’m mentally ill as well.

The difference between me and you is I know I am. I work hard to keep it under control and try not to have it direct my actions to other people’s detriment.

You? Not so much.

Good God, even in Hollywood hackers don’t pull such juvenile shit. If they want your files gone, then they’re gone. They don’t toy with your computer, they nuke it and salt the earth in their wake to ensure you’re not getting them back.

But that would deny the so important terror quotient. The story has to have that teen horror movie vibe to it to have a prayer of going viral and becoming a thing.

But as TP just pointed out, even in teen movies hackers don’t play this sort of dumb game. The data simply gets deleted in such a way as to make it non-recoverable.

Mark it down as a way Hollywood is tech-smarter than Wingnut screamers.

Oh yeah, I forgot, some sharp eyed dude noticed that something was askew in Sherry’s telling of the story, when the hacking that you think you are seeing is from Sept 16th, 2013, not from 2012.

How do we know? A sharp blogger noticed.

“Attkisson shot this video on or sometime after September 16, 2013. The episode of “Dancing with the Stars” that is playing in the background features Valerie Harper dancing a Foxtrot to “Some Kind of Wonderful” and first aired live on the evening of that date.

According to Attkisson’s own timeline her computer was ‘hacked’ in October 2012, she came forward with this allegation in May 2013, but then waited until September 2013 to take video ‘evidence.’”

And since the whole dumb “BENGHAZI!!!11” meme has come up yet again, here’s another installment in Dark_Falcon’s Stories Using the Word ‘Benghazi’ That are Actually About Benghazi:

Adrian Hofer: A rogue Libyan general’s odd campaign

A Greek car ferry moored on the waterfront in Tobruk has exemplified the chaos overtaking Libya three years after dictator Muammar Gadhafi was ousted. The country is effectively divided, with its new parliament having fled to Tobruk in August, where MPs were initially accommodated in the hired 17,000-ton Elyros ferry. Meanwhile the old legislature it was supposed to replace, the General National Congress (GNC), has been resurrected in Tripoli.

A host of powerful militias that fought side-by-side to topple Gadhafi have now turned against each other in a violent struggle for power and resources in the oil-rich country. While the GNC is supported by Operation Dawn, a coalition of forces from the Western city of Misrata and Islamists, the official parliament exiled in Tobruk has aligned itself with Operation Dignity, a military coalition launched by former army general Khalifa Haftar in May.

The renegade general has a long history in Libya, having participated in both the 1969 coup that brought Gadhafi to power and the uprising that toppled him in 2011. However, Haftar had faded into the background before he suddenly reappeared on local television in February this year, promising to free Libya from terrorism and extremism.

Islamist-leaning forces had by then become the dominant force in the GNC, and radical groups were suspected of carrying out systematic assassinations of officials in Tripoli and the eastern city of Benghazi. However, Haftar’s announcement that he was suspending the parliament while the army took over was initially met with surprise and scepticism. Nothing came of it.

Only three months later, when he launched Operation Dignity to ‘crush jihadists’ in and around Benghazi, was it demonstrated that Haftar had managed to gain the backing of key strategic militias and military forces. Led by the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (LNA), the offensive was also joined by the al-Saiqa Special Forces in Benghazi, the 2nd battalion of the Libyan army in the South and air-force units based in Tobruk.

What annoys me the most is that the right when the NSA thing first hit the fan in the Bush years, they just accused anyone who was even remotely critical of the whole thing. Snowden does his “big reveal” and all of a sudden they have a problem with not just surveillance but the very existence of the NSA itself. It’s the dishonesty and partisan hackery that infuriates me. The way you hear it from RWNJs and dudebros, you’d think that Obama invented the NSA to spy on them.

Yep, it’s definitely a PEBCAK error (Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard). Of course, since the narrative has been set, the actual facts of the matter, that a hacker would simply delete / wipe the files, that this video was shot almost a year after the purported hacking.

What kind of a stringless yo-yo would continue to use a machine that was “hacked and deleting her work” for that long? Wouldn’t a reasonable and rational person (I know, that’s a self-limiting standard with that group) go and get professional assistance? Or maybe take it to the Apple Store and let one of them take a look at it.

The “truth” out there now is that her system was hacked, and each blog / forum / commentator is simply going to add to it. Soon it will have no resemblance to events. Big Surprise.

TIFF 2014 Review: ‘The Judge’

David Dobkin’s hopelessly maudlin and glacially paced drama The Judge is one part John Grisham thriller and one part James L. Brooks melodrama, two great tastes that taste absolutely abysmal together. The Judge the kind of movie you want to reach out and strangle.

The cheesy daddy issues and uncomfortable comic relief gags about incest and mentally-challenged siblings just don’t jibe with the otherwise deadly serious storyline about a hot shot lawyer (Robert Downey Jr.) forced to defend his bullheaded father (Robert Duvall), himself a small town judge, on a vehicular manslaughter charge… especially when it may turn out to be premeditated murder. It’s one thing to use a dramatic high concept as the backdrop for a story about a family reconnecting - heck, Luc Besson does it all the time - but The Judge makes the a-plot so severe that all the cheesy homespun small town b-plot feels insultingly out of place.

I don’t agree with reflecting on video’s racial elements. Not to mention, how many white men were excluded? It was X of the worst infractions, edited down to a few minutes. Did somebody get the entire video and do a statistical analysis?

The effort to criticize the video on the racial elements seems more distraction to challenge the premise of it, than constructive.

re: #56 BigPapa

I don’t agree with reflecting on video’s racial elements.

Why? If we’re talking about the social issue of sexism, it’s all too relevant that somehow the video’s authors have not been racially sensitive. All the issues are connected.

Not to mention, how many white men were excluded?

There were 100 instances according to the authors. Out of these 100 how many white guys have been shown in the video? 1.

58 BigPapa  Nov 1, 2014 11:17:40am

Director of catcalling video responds to race debate

Bliss said that during the 10 hours captured on video, there were 108 instances of street harassment, of which he had 30 to 40 scenes with good enough quality for him to consider. He whittled that down to 20 scenes in the one minute and 57 second video. It’s difficult to distinguish that about six of the men were white because the faces were blurred, Bliss said.
“We have 18 scenes where someone is visible and on camera, and two of the scenes ate up half of the run time” of the video, he said. “And yes, those two men were not white.

The problem of the video is not racial representation, the problem is the initial focus of the video: sexist harassment.

After you return with my beer, I like his post, but this seems to be where we digress:

Gay has a point: Most Americans have a hard time balancing more than one aggrieved minority group’s concerns at a time. We ask ourselves if it’s enough just to be mad about sexism without having to muddy the waters with some idle chit-chat about ethnic minorities being constantly labeled as thugs, shiftless layabouts, and excellent pick-and-roll defenders. Can’t we just focus on one thing and get back to the rest later? How to Get Away with Murder is on, and I love that show.

We can discuss sexism and race at the same time even though it is hard. However, are we to dismiss this viral video showing obvious blatant harrassment on the premise that it’s racist or racially insensitive?

Propaganda is designed to shake you out of your complacency and drive you to direct action. What better way to do that than throwing out a bunch of images of intimidating blacks and Latinos in an urban area? It clearly worked, as the video has almost 24 million views as of the time I’m writing this. It’s not explicitly racist, but it’s definitely using race as a tool, and that’s been a smart rhetorical strategy in the United States for a long time-from Abe Lincoln to Lee Atwater to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Race-based persuasion isn’t going away any time soon, not as long as we keep buying into it in droves.

OK, so there is where I get lost. ‘Using race as a tool’ is quite in inference with a dollop of Atwater and Sharpton. That’s pretty over the top.

It’s a very uncomfortable video, no doubt.

And this is why I will never be a conservative.

As I’ve said in the past. I am center left and have voted for decent Republican candidates, especially back in the 70s and into the 80 as many a local, state, and even national election the Dems have run some stiffs.

But no way today. The GOP have gone crazy and there really is no one there I can support. And the biggest reason is since the TeaParty, they have to kiss up to even more crazy crap and so even a sensible GOPer (are there any?) has to join in the kissing, selling out their own soul in the process.

In other words…today I don’t care what a Republican says, they are burdened to be representative of the whole GOP package. If someone tries to be moderate he gets shot down. And no one seems to stand up to any of it, which means they are worthless and fall into lock step.

It’s the old ‘one bad apple spoils the whole bunch’ thing. Since they have way more than one bad apple…the whole party fast became rotten to the core.

So, my grandmother has been admitted to an assisted living home while she undergoes treatment for bone cancer. Even if the treatment is successful, she’s probably only looking at months. She’s been a real bitch to my mother over the years, and was down right nasty to my mom after my Dad died, but she’s my last living grandparent.

I’ve decided this growing older thing sucks.

The point is not that something should not be discussed. The discussion is in fact ongoing. The point is that because of the way the video was made, not discussing the racial component is not an option. And that some people who object to the video may have legitimate reasons for this. For instance, Denise Oliver-Velez of DK, a pretty prominent anti-racist activist as well as a feminist, outright called the video racist. I assure you it wasn’t because of sexism on her part, even if I don’t necessarily share the judgment.

All that the GOP has is sleazy tricks and lies. After all, the truth (i.e., that the GOP has become a party run by rich sociopaths who get votes by pandering to a bigoted and resentful base) isn’t a vote-getter.

Most unfortunately, sleazy tricks and lies are quite effective, especially with a Democratic party that is badly compromised on the issue of plutocracy and a media establishment that is worse than useless.

Notably the references to “Heaven”, and the Doctor’s statements about physical realities (like the age of the moon), which are a bit too far outside reality for a not-really-serious series like Dr. Who.

So, why do creationists claim that they want schools to teach both creationism and evolution?

Perhaps here’s why:

The relative importance of religion and education on university students’ views of evolution in the Deep South and state science standards across the United States

Background

There is a negative relationship between education and religiosity and a positive relationship between education and acceptance of evolution, but how this manifests in college students who differ in degree of religiosity and prior educational experiences is unclear. We focused our study on the relative importance of education and religion on evolution understanding for college students at a large, public university in the Deep South.

[…]

Results

We found that the degree of religiosity mattered significantly more than education when predicting students’ understanding of evolution. When we focused on acceptance of evolution only, students taught evolution or neither evolution nor creationism in high school had significantly higher acceptance than those taught both evolution and creationism or just creationism. Science majors always outscored non-science majors, and not religious students significantly outperformed religious students. Highly religious students were more likely to reject evolution even though they understood that the scientific community accepted the theory of evolution.

Overall, students in two of three biology classes increased their acceptance of evolution, but only those students that seldom/never attended religious services improved. K-12 state science standard grades were significantly and negatively correlated with measures of state religiosity and significantly and positively correlated with measures of state educational attainment.

Conclusions

Religiosity, rather than education, best explains views on evolution. In areas of the country where the vast majority of residents believe in God and the literal truth of the Bible, students may be hampered as they enter and progress through college. These same states tend to have lower state science standards and lower levels of educational attainment.

I’ve often heard people say, here in the buckle of the “Bible Belt” things like “IF you say that Creation is just a story, then what else is just a story?” and “If Adam and Eve didn’t fall from Paradise, there is no reason for Jesus”. To NOT accept literal creation is to jeopardize everything their worldview is built on.

Scary Stuff.

That’s a nice camera but a little out of my price range. I’ve been reading reviews and the D5300 keeps showing up as one of the best. I like the red one too.

Most of the pictures I’ve been posting for the past year or so were taken with a D3200. The macro shots are using a macro setting with the standard lens.

I told my wife it’s either that or an XBox. I’m all about the camera. She said the kids might like the video game system. I have a feeling they will have to wait.

I just find it pretty ugly that so many people are judging Dunham for things she did when she was seven years old and younger. As I said, I’m not even a fan and I have no desire to read the book, but the excerpts I’ve seen don’t really seem all that outrageous to me - and they happened when she was a child.

This is one of the worst things about Twitter, these mob pile-ons of judgmental scolds.

What’s worse is that every over-reaction like this clearly seems to be makes it that more harder for victims of sexual abuse to come forward and to be taken seriously.
I find myself wondering whether it is an unfortunate side-effect of the righties behavior, or if that effect is in fact intended?

Would folks here currently saying Lena Dunham is being maligned still be saying that if we were talking about something a conservative woman had done to her younger sister as a child?

I would. I’ve seen the damage behavior like the one the righties are engaging in right now causes. No-one deserves that, not even a conservative.

There’s a whole ‘nother discussion about childhood sexual experimentation.

Yes, and that was an incredibly stupid question. Your partisan cock-neckery is showing.

Of course for several reasons it would be very unlike a conservative woman or man to make this kind of admission in the first place. First there’s the generalized shame over human sexuality on the right, especially regarding child sexual development issues and homosexual contact and experimentation. Second, Dunham’s admission was a confession of sorts, something she clearly wasn’t proud of and conservatives don’t like to openly confront the uglier aspects of things they’ve done in the past, even if they occurred when they were children. They prefer to bury such things and dwell on either their successes, or the wounds inflicted on them by others. This is because conservatives generally aren’t big on introspection, they prefer to externalize their problems, and react instead of reflect.

This is a stupid and offensive question, as others have already well-explained. The only thing I’ll add is that it is categorically impossible for a child to be a movement conservative, so slamming the child for the sins of the adult would never be appropriate.

188 goddamnedfrank  Nov 1, 2014 4:27:09pm

I generally think Dunham is kind of self absorbed and rather irritating, even as I recognize she has a certain level of writing talent, is clearly driven, organized, and has earned her level of professional success.

This is her Obama ate dog meat moment. The right doesn’t give a shit about the context or how old she was when it happened. She’s confessing to something that they never, ever would confess to. And many of the people condemning her, I’m certain, have much more egregious and horrible skeletons in their closets.

It didn’t help that Bennie’s little truthy site first staged their outrage with the misinformation that she was 17, not 7, when it happened.

I’m not a Lena Dunham fan—I think she is talented, but a total attention-seeker, and I’m guessing she included some of the “outrageous” anecdotes in her book just to troll.

Also—are the rightwingers really slow readers? The book’s been out for more than a month. Why are they losing their shit about it now?

You’ll notice that liberals never condemned Ben Shapiro for all the perverted things he did with that Armadillo carcass, and nobody ever mentions why CCJ was banned from SeaWorld.

You could say it’s because I just made that shit up, but still, nobody ever mentions it.

No, because they tend to ban books they don’t like (or that are written by people they don’t like), rather than read them.

It took this long because they had to wait on their marching orders talking points…

Of course they’re lying about God (Allah to Zeus) being the lodestar. They simply decide God doesn’t like what they don’t like and use that excuse to judge others.

204 Charles Johnson  Nov 1, 2014 4:56:35pm

I almost have to hand it to Williamson and Shapiro. They knew exactly which buttons to push to make this into a big meltdown, and they actually got it to cross party lines this time.

This is the difference between the right and left, by the way — when some horrible thing is revealed about a right winger, you’ll NEVER see the general right wing population freaking out about it. Nope, they’ll line up to defend whoever’s being attacked, no matter what they’ve done. Every time, without fail.

I find it embarrassing that so many liberals are letting themselves be trolled by these right wing misogynists.

There’s a big red streak of prudery in America that always surprises me when it erupts in public, and it’s not a right/left thing. There’s still some kind of weird Puritan mentality that a lot of people have, even the ones who like to front as champions of personal freedom.
