Reposted from below because it’s worth it.

Were characters Phillip Marlowe and Sam Spade a composite of a real LA African American P.I. in the 1930s named Samuel Marlowe ?

The LA Times has done a great graphical piece on this, if you can get through the pay wall. Fascinating stuff.

I’ll believe it when I see it. If Mitch wants an idea of what he can look forward to if he wins reelection and if the GOP becomes the majority, he can just call up Speaker Boehner and ask him how it’s worked out over there with a GOP majority and little margin for error on virtually every vote. Ask him what it’s going to be like in a year, when those Republicans from blue states who are up for reelection have to start deciding whether or not they’ll stand by Ted Cruz and Rand Paul.

Boehner likely will have no choice but to at least take up Articles. The lawsuit he thought would take pressure off him seems to be dead in the water, with no forward momentum whatsoever. To give a hint of how toxic it is, both firms which were hired to take it to court have bowed out. And they did so with such haste that they didn’t even rack up any billable hours.

After next week, if the Senate majority will be in the GOP’s hands come January, he’s gonna have no choice. Either he commits to impeaching the President or he gets voted out and a new Speaker who will will be installed.

There’s no doubt about it. Since he was first elected Pres, the GOP has made it clear their only goal was to prevent him from accomplishing anything and smearing him and his legacy in every way possible.

Impeachment is the inevitable outcome of this process.

I’ve talked to wingnuts who are convinced that, if the President is impeached and it goes to a full vote of the Senate, Democrats will vote to remove him from office just to survive reelection bids in 2016. This is the base that’s going to help the GOP win a Senate majority next week.

If Republicans win a majority in the Senate, impeachment proceedings against Obama are almost a certainty.

I’ll say it again: A drawn out impeachment proceeding will provide a perfect smokescreen for the Republicans’ inability to legislate as well as pouring shit all over the Dems in the run up to 2016. The whole works will be just like the Titanic: it will leak like hell for a while and then disappear from view.

Impeachment is going to happen, one way or another. Articles of impeachment will be filed by this GOP. That’s almost a given. They have nothing to lose, and their base demands it. All that pent up anger and hate has no where else to go.

They will file impeachment, regardless of what the Senate does. If the Senate goes to the GOP, then impeachment goes forward - and on what charges/grounds?

I’m betting that they’ll try to pin high crimes or misdemeanors on policy differences, though they’ll make it about Benghazi or IRS or Fast and Furious - the same nothingburgers they’ve been pushing the past couple of years without any success because their own investigations have turned up nothing.

Two points.

First, in 2016, the Rs will be in the same shitty situation the Ds have this year: incumbent Senators in Blue and Purple sates (as opposed to the Dems running in Red and Purple states this year). The Ds have a much easier time of it in 2016 on the Senate side. Impeachment would be very problematical for incumbent Rs in 2016.

Second, if they impeach Obama and succeed in ousting him, they will get a very angry Joe Biden. Think they’ll impeach him, only to get John Fucking Kerry?

You’re assuming rationality where there is no evidence of it. Their base wants them to do this, why are they going to deny them that? As already noted, they’ll file Articles and pass them in the House, we’ll get a months long dog-and-pony show that takes the GOP’s inability to govern out of the papers in exchange for scandals that they feel will hurt the Democrats simply by being associated with the President, and then they’ll put conviction to a vote. It succeeds, then they’ve dealt the Democrats a blow by removing the scandal-plagued President from office and made him toxic to his supporters. They fail, then the toxic sludge they spent weeks spreading all over will still hurt Democrats.

And either way, their base will be placated.

Lawhawk;

I asked upstairs and am truly curious:

As Judge, what powers does Robert’s have in an impeachment trial? Could he toss the case as arbitrary and capricious under summary judgement? Could he kill it because it was without basis in fact?

So, if an impeachment is tried, how do all of you think it will look to people of color, moderates, people with a brain, etc.?

It makes no sense politically. It would be a demonstration. And I really think a demonstration that could cost them a lot as they are going to kill their demographics.

Wait, that means they will do it.

62 CarolJ  Nov 1, 2014 6:39:03pm

Patrick Leahy is the other Senator from Vermont. Democratic, of course.

If the Republicans try to impeach Obama, they will deeply regret it. You know the every other election Democratic lull? That would be over forever. There are a lot of Republicans in blue and purple states that only get in because Democrats stay home in off-years. An impeachment would make these people permanent voters for every election, every time.

And on what grounds? Grounds that only Fox viewers believe-and up to now others have ignored. Put this craziness up front and center to repulse moderates and supercharge minority votes? The Republican nominee in 2016 might as well concede now and save his party the trouble.

Clinton’s impeachment didn’t really hurt the Dems all that much. Gore lost due to the Supreme Court, not the popular vote. And even that was because some folks didn’t want to “reward” Clinton’s adultery. If Clinton was as clean as Obama’s been, it would have been Gore in a walk.
