James Baker: I Barred Netanyahu From State Department

Politics • Views: 33,080

Former Secretary of State James Baker said today on CNN that when he was in office during the George H. W. Bush administration, he barred Benjamin Netanyahu from the State Department for saying US Middle East policy was “based on lies and distortions.”

Baker said that Netanyahu - then a senior Israeli official on foreign policy - had said that “American policy in the Middle East is based on lies and distortions” during the George H.W. Bush administration.

“I barred him from the State Department,” Baker said. “That may not be widely known.”

Imagine the wingnut reaction if John F. Kerry did something like this.

I’ll get the 5.5 oz bag instead.

One more reason we are screwed (thanks, media stenographers):

When Conspiracy Theories Don’t Fit the Media Narrative

The most common press narrative for elections this year is to contrast them with the 2010 and 2012 campaigns…It is a great narrative, a wonderful organizing theme. But any evidence that contradicts or clouds the narrative devalues it, which is perhaps why evidence to the contrary tends to be downplayed or ignored…

What it suggests is how deeply the eagerness to pick a narrative and stick with it, and to resist stories that contradict the narrative, is embedded in the culture of campaign journalism. The alternative theory, that the Republican establishment won by surrendering its ground to its more ideologically extreme faction, picking candidates who are folksy and have great resumes but whose issue stances are much the same as their radical Tea Party rivals, goes mostly ignored.

Excellent point today. Nobody wants to remember the Bush pushed hard on Israel quite a few times. Threatened loans etc.

Amazing how some will judge a relationship that goes back so far and exists so deeply by the shallowest moments of the least real import. Ever see my logical proof the government has never found an alien being? The NASA budget. Look at the size of the navy. We know China is there.

Anyway judge by goods and money and technology. We trade freely. The monies and families with ties in both nations are big. Their military gets a level of technology from us that nobody else may buy apart from NATO. And vice versa.

BUSH URGES DELAY ON AID FOR ISRAEL; THREATENS A VETO
By R. W. APPLE Jr.,
Published: September 13, 1991

Speaking in unusually vehement terms, President Bush demanded again today that Congress delay debate on Israel’s request for $10 billion in loan guarantees and threatened to use his veto to block any early Congressional action on the matter.

At a hurriedly scheduled news conference, the President clearly raised the likelihood of a bitter dispute with Israel and its supporters in this country. He asserted that the request for loan guarantees to help build housing for Soviet immigrants should not be considered now because the world stood “on the brink of a historic breakthrough” that could lead to direct negotiations between Israel and its Arab neighbors.

I realize that it was back in the last century and all, but ISTR that back in the day, James Baker (and his boss, GHWB) had ended up on the Israel Lobby’s *
shitlist, basically for what Baker just admitted to, i.e., insufficient kow-towing to Israel wrt to Middle East policy, and had their reps tainted (as far as was able) as antisemites scarcely better than Julius Striecher - not that it took hold much, but I’m not sure that perceived lukewarmness towards letting Israel run American policy in that region probably didn’t play some part in Bush’s electoral defeat in 1992.

* which doesn’t exist, of course, but even if it did, shut up, Nazi….!

This cracked me up.

In Arkansas, especially, the audio could touch a nerve. Mr. Cotton, a freshman House member, skipped a popular political event in his state, the Bradley County Pink Tomato Festival, to attend the Koch brothers’ meeting in California. According to the audio, he was repaid with praise for his willingness to hew to the most conservative line, even if it meant voting against legislation popular in his state.

Can I just say this?

Baker is a vile swine.

I could get more vociferous, but really, why waste the time and effort?

Mean-spirited and vindictive, he was. As such, he was perfectly suited to be a close colleague of Cheney and Rummy. I do not consider this a worthy trait.

As a Zappa fan, I have a particularly vivid distaste for this Baker person. As a human, I await the day when his evil works will be well and fully exposed.

The legacy of the Nixon admin continues…
