Oregon: Test Shows Liberian Woman Under Observation Does Not Have Ebola

OregonLive.com is reporting tonight that the Liberian woman hospitalized for observation on Friday with a self-monitored fever does not have Ebola.

A Liberian woman who was hospitalized Friday in Milwaukie over fears she has Ebola does not have the disease, health care officials said on Sunday.

“Based on test results and an evaluation of her clinical condition, I’m pleased to say there are no cases of Ebola in Oregon,” Dr. Paul Lewis, the tri-county health officer, said in a news release from Providence Health & Services. “The CDC has advised us that no further testing is required.”

I’ve noticed that too. That they seem, rather than relieved and happy that the tests have been negative, almost sad. It’s like they would want someone to catch Ebola just to make them happy and give meaning to their lives. But we all know that nobody is that shallow and petty now don’t we? ///snark

I suppose it would depend on whatever studies are out there based on injury reports and autopsies?

But if you fell on your head, I’d tend to think it would be more likely it would be a fatal injury. Unless, of course, you fell into a net.

The governors race gets me worked up. I think John Hickenlooper has been a good governor who’s been pretty honest about his dealings in Denver. He governs as a centrist with a left-leaning tilt on some things and a rightward tilt on others. Sure I disagree with the man, especially on energy policy, but I agree with him too. Like his stance on the death penalty (he’s against it, though it be legal in Colorado, though rarely used).

His opponent, Bob Beauprez? Well, we’d better paddle faster because I hear banjo music!

Well, tomorrow morning I go see my accountant to straighten out my taxes, and hopefully, remain out of debtors’ prison! Then, it’s off to the liquor store to stock up for Tuesday night. The only way I’ll be able to survive watching my state slip further into the gutter will be by consuming mass quantities of amber-colored liquids.

I truly admire the Dems down here who have the guts and the endurance to launch campaigns against overwhelming odds, with no national support and no media support (we have Republican candidates who refused to debate their Dem opponents, but the media let them off the hook with nary a comment).

I cringe, then laugh, when the DCCC emails or calls me to give them money. As if.

Our Senate race has that sportsball feel to it this year, especially Cory Gardner. He’s been quite the effective snake oil salesman, smiling everywhere he goes and “pivoting” on a lot of the backward women’s stuff he supports (“personhood”). About the suspected Ebola case: they want them here because they make a better case for their preferred treatment: hiding like a turtle. Closing borders and saying NO is always the answer. If you don’t know, Typhoid Mary became famous after two wealthy families got sick and some died where she was the cook, yet she didn’t get sick. A smart man did the contact tracing, and discovered that Mary was the only thing the two households had in common. But she never got sick. She was put under quarantine for years, and tests showed she was the first known “carrier,” someone who wasn’t sick but infected others. There are no Ebola “carriers”. Think about it: it’s too virulent for someone to simply carry. Mary’s gall bladder was full of typhus at her autopsy. Ebola destroys inner organs and the fluids are lethal. So, no carriers would survive. But still, bring up the old social archetype, whether it’s true or not, because it serves the Cause.

Smoking gun?

So the tail planes that can rotate upwards 90 degrees to add drag to help slow and control the Ss2’s descent phase in the thin atmosphere at the edge of space were deployed early (see photo).

That isn’t supposed to happen until the craft is above mach 1.4 and considerably higher in its trajectory. The co-pilot, who was killed in the accident, unlocked the mechanism as the plane accelerated to about mach 1.0 but neither pilot activated the early deployment. Telemetry shows the tail planes deployed themselves only two seconds after the mechanism was unlocked even though the deployment lever was not used.

Since the engine and propulsion tanks have been found intact and without any burn throughs the focus of the investigation has shifted from any kind of ‘explosion” causing the planes disintegration. It instead seems that the plane simply could not handle the aerodynamic stress of the tail planes being deployed while the rocket was still firing during the climbing phase of the flight.

His arguments have swayed me from upgrading to a Nikon D3300 from my six-year-old D60, despite the additional cost. What really convinced me was learning I can use my Nikon-mount lenses on the Sony body.

The Olympus u4/3’s are nicer I think. Better lens selection too - Sony seems to think cameras are body driven only and skimps on the lenses. Oly puts out a good range in both categories, plus better compatible options from other makers.

Yep, electorate cares about the economy, jobs, and unemployment rather than ISIS and Ebola. So, Chuck, what do you talk about on MTP, and what does the media spew about for 24/7. Jobs? Nope, Benghazi, ISIS, and Ebola.

And lots about Obama’s poor popularity, while none on how Congress’ numbers are much, much, lower.

Then again, your interest is not in truth, leadership, or even integrity. It’s about horse races, eyeballs, and making a buck by selling controversy.

We don’t see too many Dem ads down here in SC, because the Dems don’t have anywhere near the money the GOP has. But our candidate for SoS, who has made not taking more than $100 donations as part of her campaign, has almost 14,000 views on YouTube for this clever little ditty. (Not sure how that will translate onto votes, but…)

Although we require automobile owners to purchase liability insurance because automobiles can potentially cause injury or death we can’t require gun owners to purchase liability insurance because reasons. One of those reasons is that the gun lobby has become a de facto branch of government. The Republicans like it that way and the Democrats don’t have the courage to stand up and state the simple truth.

Hey all…trying to stay busy today and gearing up for all the crap that will occur tomorrow with the election. I’m thinking a pure bunker mentality will rule the next few days.

I sure hope the Repubs don’t get control of the senate, as I don’t know If I will be able to take the gloating and then the stupidity as they try to tear down the country with stupid governing.

But then again, sometimes I wonder if a Republican dominated government will be needed for another generation or two to learn their lessons.

Huh? Even those making the prediction can’t have believed it. That sort of thing is election-eve panic-mongering, not genuine fear…much less hope.

As to demoralized, nobody wants Ebola to go on a tear here. When it doesn’t, everybody is either unmoved (appropriately, since there was never any chance it would) or relieved.

There’s nothing surprising about having people who were feared to have Ebola turn out not to have it. Since the consequences of a false negative, as with Duncan, are much more serious than the consequences of a false positive, the system will now flag anything that just might be Ebola. There are many other diseases that produce symptoms consistent with Ebola in its and their early stages. We must expect that almost all those who are flagged as potentially ill with Ebola will in the end turn out not to have it. Better that, than the too casual system that was in place in Dallas earlier.

Most likely, there will be a handful of further real domestic cases, including maybe another one or two acquired here, and scores or hundreds of false alarms, before this finally winds down. But part of the reason that these numbers can be expected to be so very low is because there’s now signs of progress on the ground in Africa [the must-win continent], and because here, we have tightened our protocols and are more vigilant with respect to monitoring, and tracking contacts of, those who just possibly might have it.

Those who care nothing for their fellow Americans, and who pray for Ebola, are a misfortune for both you and me. Not saying he governs well, mind you, but he does seem to like calling the shots.

And there’s Walker, in Wisconsin. Here, he not only called the shots, but he walked his own talk. Republicans who win, however many or few of them it may turn out to be, will be on the spot to at least try and deliver on whatever it was they promised.

Some have promised bipartisanship. If Republicans win a majority in the Senate, they will be on the spot. Victory for Republicans is nothing for Republicans to celebrate. Unless it can be converted into a reputation for good government. Used the way the last few victories have been used, it will only set the stage for larger and more lasting defeats.
