Michelle Obama Calls for African-Americans to Vote, Right Wing Blogs Hear “Fried Chicken,” Spew Racism

The right wing journalism business model
Politics • Views: 37,080

Today when I checked in to Twitter, I noticed a lot of conservatives tweeting about an interview First Lady Michelle Obama gave to NewsOne Now, about the importance of voting on this Election Day. But that message is being ignored by the main right wing media sites and blogs, because they’ve found something they have a lot more fun doing: whining about being falsely accused of racism, and then immediately following up with horrifically racist shit.

Some wingnut genius noticed that in this interview Roland Martin asks Michelle Obama: if black people vote, do they get to treat themselves to some soul food as a reward? She joked that she’d give her “full permission to eat some fried chicken after they vote.”

If you’ve followed right wing blogs at all, you know what happened next: immediate victimhood memes about being falsely accused of racism, because if a Republican said it he’d be persecuted as a racist. Apparently they can’t see the difference between using the fried chicken stereotype as a racial slur, and talking about “fried chicken,” as, you know, food.

Here’s one example of many, at one of the web’s premier sites for racist comments, Weasel Zippers: donotlink.com.

As usual, the complaining about being falsely accused is immediately followed by a mind-bending torrent of utterly overt racism in the comment section, bringing up every stereotype for black people you can possibly imagine. Because this is how conservative blogs these days show how not-racist they are.

I’ll post a few comments, but I’ll hide them from view by default, because they’re ugly and blatantly racist (intermingled with images that are even more sickening):

Somebody please take a dump on this HOODRATS ugly head

So is the Mooch confirming that every black person just loves fried chicken? Does that go for watermelon too? Hey black community how do you feel about being stereotyped by the FLOTUS? Also, how do you feel about being told that you have to vote for the democrat no matter how bad they might be? How you like being controlled and enslaved by the party that started slavery and has fought to keep it going every since then?

You’ll find the same kinds of comments on this topic at almost every right wing blog today. Watermelon is a recurring theme. Who says the right has a problem with racism?

Rarely is hypocrisy so immediately evident.

She just needs to talk to get them into a rage. Talk about eating healthy? WINGUT RAGE! Talk about what it’s like being African American? Conservative rage. Conservatives have shown nothing but hatred for this First Lady from the moment she went on the national scene with her husband seven years ago and it’s getting really fucking old seeing them bitch about every little thing she does. Conservatives don’t like being called racists? Gee, guys, maybe being racist assholes every time a minority does something that you deem “unAmerican.”

It continues to baffle me that people pretend that there’s a difference between a member of a minority group gently poking fun at a stereotype and someone outside that group using the stereotype as a means of attack.

I mean, it’s a pretty obvious distinction.

But yet the liberals who vote for Obama are klansmen and Nazis! Really despite what cons believe about liberals, we really don’t think all or even most conservatives are racist. Instead, we listen to what they actually say and do. So yeah if you minority voters just vote Democratic because they want “Free stuff” or that President and Mrs. Obama are “ghetto trash”, we will call you racist and guess what- you will have earned it. But enough about how conservatives are the biggest whiners in politics.

Uh no that’s not the difference between a Republican and Democrat. Really wingnuts what is with your obsession that Democrats like people being on welfare? We don’t like people being on welfare. We however unlike you see it as a tool that can help poor people out when they’re down financially. It’s hard to imagine any of the Republican candidates especially Mitt taking their time to talk to a homeless person let alone offering him a job. But that whole thing does fit in with how Republicans view employers that they’re these altruistic people who give people jobs out of the kindness of their hearts. I mean. I am not suggesting that employers are evil people at all here but the rosy eyed and fuzzy vision these idiots have of employers is just as pathetic.

Really the biggest difference between a Democrat and Republican when it comes to things like welfare or SSDI is that the former will at least try to empathize with your situation and try to understand why you are where you are. The Republican will assume that you are where you are is because you’re lazy or don’t have good faith. Republicans love to talk about people pulling themselves up by the bootstraps but you can’t pull yourself up from anything when you have someone cutting the straps off your boots and telling you that you have to make it without those straps. We have always had tools for people to move themselves upwards. The GI Bill after WWII gave many who otherwise would not have been able to afford college a chance. Student loans did the same. I don’t expect the government to pay for my whole ride but I have no problem with the government leveling the playing field so those born less well off don’t die less well off.

56 iossarian  Nov 4, 2014 12:31:40pm

One day there was a Republican man walking down the street. He was very handsome in a square-jawed kind of way, but not attractive to other men who are straight and not attractive to men.

He came across a homeless person. The Republican Man gave the Homeless Person a fifty dollar bill to spend on getting some good clean work clothes like some overalls or an apron or something. The homeless person got a job straight away because that’s how you get a job, by wearing overalls. The Homeless Person wanted to thank the Republican Man but the Republican Man said no because he was like Jesus and never boasted. He acted real cool but in a totally straight way.

There was a liberal there who thought the Homeless Man should be on welfare for ever. Republican Man laughed at the liberal and the Homeless Man laughed too and never voted Democrat again. The liberal started crying because she wouldn’t get free birth control now.

This is a true story retweet if you like grits.

9 decaf orange pekoe tea bags
2 Qt water

Boil the water, remove from heat, add tea bags. Steep at least 45 min (longer works, as well). Add sugar.

Simple Decaf Sweet Tea

9 decaf orange pekoe tea bags
2 Qt water
1/2 cup sugar

Boil the water, remove from heat, add tea bags. Steep at least 45 min (longer works, as well). Add sugar.

(When I was growing up, the family practice was to use a full cup of sugar. For me. a half-cup is JUST fine.)

Sounds ‘bout right, sweet enough to taste it without rotting your teeth out of your head.

She was specifically asked to name a “soul food” as a reward for doing civic duty and voting. She responded by saying they had her “full permission” to have some fried chicken. So yes after being asked to, she named something that is commonly thought of as being a “soul food” in response. The funny part is that by replying the way she did she also poked fun at those who criticize her nutritional advocacy by giving people “her permission” as if anyone actually required it. :p

He saw markets as there to benefit everyone by balancing supply and demand and directing flows of capital to where they would do the most good, not as an ideology in and of itself and a means to concentrate as much wealth as possible in the fewest number of hands.

Right. He was coming from the Age of Mercantilism. People who confuse Smith’s theories with Von Misesque theories on the economy are being dishonest. Smith would be horrified to see his economic system being used to justify a system where a select few control most of the wealth.

What I’m hoping for should the Republicans gain the Senate and McConnell lose- a real possibility on both counts IMO is that Cornyn or whoever becomes majority leader has no clue what he’s doing and gets in the Boehner trap of having to placate the many nuts that rode him into his job. If I were rigging a machine, it wouldn’t clearly show my vote being recorded for the wrong candidate. How would a voter miss that?

I have my own wants for an electronic voting machine, and none of the current systems meet it

1. After completing the ballot via touchscreen, a Paper ballot sheet is printed, showing the voters choices. Voter reviews that ballot, and if all is correct, presses the “VOTE” button, otherwise, uses a “REVISE” to fix any problems.

2. After voting, the voter is given a piece of paper by the machine, with a random character set. Voter can use that character set to log into a site after the election to see if his vote was correctly recorded. This helps provide voter confidence in the system

3. The “PAPER BALLOT” generated in step 1 is deposited in a sealed ballot box by the voter. It will be used for quality assurance and recount purposes.

4. Primary election results will be the electronic tally. 10% of all precincts (random assignment) will do a 100% comparison of paper vs electronic ballots. This will discourage tally manipulation

I would be much more comfortable with electronic ballots with a system like that.

Our voting machines do have the paper ballot that prints out before your vote is finally registered. I have no idea what happens to those paper ballots, but they must be kept somewhere.

The secret code to check that your vote was properly registered can’t happen because then you could prove that you sold your vote to the person buying it. Or be forced to show your employer that you had voted in a certain way.

Vitter blasts ‘incompetent’ CDC response at Louisiana port

“What I find alarming is the CDC determined the passenger had a fever, a common symptom of Ebola, the passenger was not placed in the agency’s quarantine program,” Vitter wrote.

“Based on the CDC’s response this week in the Port of New Orleans, I believe your agency has been incredibly incompetent and put the health of Louisianans at risk.”

The letter asked if the CDC evaluated all passengers on the ship; whether the agency is following up with each person over Ebola’s 21-day incubation period; and why the individual with a fever was not quarantined.

Quarantines are typically administered by state governments, not federal health officials.

Yeah I remember that. The way they used those WWII veterans was pretty fucking shameful. I mean I felt bad for the vets not being able to visit the memorials but I still remember this one GOP Representative from Texas being a total dick to a NPS ranger and I think to her credit she did point out to the guy that it was his actions that led to the shutdown and not hers. Of course if any of the national parks (which by the way they have also complained about Obama designating to many of them) got vandalized during the shutdown, they’d blame Obama. And yes I remember also them totally abusing the word “non-essential.” Well derp if they’re “non-essential” we must not need them. If he really feels that way, he’ll leave the country and ask for exile. But wait you mean he just likes saying this outrageous shit because he needs more listeners and more listeners means more cash for Mark to write more books about how Obama is a tyrant? Really this is why I almost feel sorry for the poor losers who listen to people like Levin, Beck, Limbaugh, etc. These guys don’t give two shits about you. They care only about themselves and how they can scare you into listening to them and buying their next book. We’ve been hearing for years about how Obama’s going to “go Hitler”(or in this case Mussolini) and guess what. Not one opposition party has been banned in his presidency. Really if you actually believe this crap, ask yourself why hasn’t Obama banned the GOP? He could if he were this terrible dictator have refused to seat the GOP majority House of the past two Congressional sessions but he didn’t because guess what he’s not the totalitarian monster you fantasize him to be.

If I were to state in say 1939 Germany that I felt Hitler were a tyrant and I had seen what happened to other dissidents, I would want out of Germany. But then again Levin and these other guys don’t really believe what they say. Obama’s presidency has made them wealthy men. And if we for some awful reason elect Cruz or whoever, they won’t be happy because these guys need a Democratic president so their listeners can find someone to blame their problems on.

The only reason they don’t like being called racists is that it is politically damaging.

The conservative response to this is two-fold.

1) DARVO in response to any coverage of their festering racism.

2) Trying to get racist thinking back into the mainstream (e.g., the Bell Curve and its odious follow-ups). The white nationalist problem at NRO is a good example of this.

re: #55 HappyWarrior

Great post.

I like to say that the Democrats may not have all the answers, but at least they understand the questions.

That isn’t humor. Only property owners should get to vote is a very common RWNJ idea.

Yes, because you see, only property owners have ‘skin in the game’, much like how only people who pay Federal Income Tax have ‘skin in the game’, no matter how much of your income you might pay in OTHER taxes.

Basically it boils down to “Only people who will vote like me are legitimate voters. Everyone else should just accept our judgement.”

Indeed. I remember Nana standing by the stove for the 40 minutes it takes, running one low-walled and one high-walled skillet, raising and lowering the heat, taking lids on and off, moving pieces from one to the other, without really being able to explain why. She’d been doing it for so many years (her last batch was when she was 93) that she just KNEW when it was time to do certain things, like she knew how much salt and pepper to put in the flour to coat the pieces.

Nobody in the family was ever able to replicate it.

Sadly my straight Dem ticket voting was cancelled out by all my pet wingnuts, but I voted for any Dem I could and left the uncontested races blank. re: #150 RealityBasedEbola

RBS

I just voted today (Nevada). The machines are electronic. It gives you a chance to review your votes on the screen. You then press a button to print a paper backup that stays with the machine. You get an opportunity to check that, too, before pressing the final button to “cast your ballot.” Works for me.

soap shouldn’t be used on a cast iron skillet - you can rinse it with very hot water, and let it soak in water if needed. then any food left sticking to it should be scrubbed with one of those plastic scrubby things as seen here:

blackirondude.blogspot.com

the idea is to keep the protective, stick reducing coating provided by layers of oil/grease that have hardened on the surface. a pan with these layers is said to have been “seasoned”

It is a deep dark secret that once your cast iron has a good layer of seasoning on it, the occasional bit of detergent won’t hurt it. (Do not tell my husband I do this.) Otherwise, a little soak, a nylon scrubby and I put it on the stove to help it dry. Then a bit of oil or Crisco and it’s good to go.

I’ll let you in on a secret - a seasoned Cast Iron skillet will STAY seasoned, even if occasionally washed with soap and water, if that soap and water is only on it for about the 10 seconds it takes to clean it, then it’s washed with lots of hot water and dried IMMEDIATELY.

The best seasoning is also flaxseed oil, because it’s the only edible drying oil. Nothing else will penetrate as thoroughly or get quite as hard. Cover the entire pan with it then wipe as much off as you can with paper towels, you want the thinnest possible coating, no pooling or drips. Put in an oven and heat at 400 for an hour, then turn the oven off and let the pan cool down with the oven for at least another hour. Repeat at least ten times for best results.

Mom Anon’s advice is good.

What I do is while still hot, wipe it out with paper towel and get is clean as possible that way. If you need to scrape any burnt stuff, a little pushing with a metal spatula. Then while still warm a little squirt of dish soap and hot tap water and use a scratch pad with the spatula so you don’t burn yourself and push the scratch pad around in the skillet. 99% of the time that will be enough.

Then do the oil thing while still warm and work the oil into the skillet like you are oiling some leather.

I have two 9” cast iron skillets that I’ve had for probably 40 years. I can’t live without them.

By the way…if you have a metal wok, clean it much the same way too. If you watch the wok handlers in any Chinese restaurant they pretty much do the same thing.

Hot/warm is the key.

Given his history and his purported positions, I don’t see those things that CCJ said as humor, I think he’s dead serious.

Which is odd, considering that, AFAIK, Chuck owns no real property (since he lives with his in-laws); that would mean that under any scheme like that, he doesn’t get a vote.

Moran…

It wouldn’t surprise me if he believes that. I’ve seen many conservatives express a problem with the idea of directly electing senators. Glad to see though that he’s basically admitting that his views on suffrage are less progressive than Andrew Jackson.

Most of the time I just wipe my cast iron skillets, but if needed, hot water and a plastic type scrubber. I always dry in the oven, then wipe with a small amount of oil and let sit after the oven is turned off, till it cools.

About once a year I scrub them real good with a scouring pad and re-season.
I guess there is no one correct way to do it.
This works for me.

Also, the pork lard you can get isn’t the same as it used to be, because pigs aren’t fed a natural diet anymore. This reduces the ability of their fat to polymerize, which is essentially what seasoning is, polymerized fat.

Local farms/markets ftw. Gotta find the good sources. ;)

re: #328 Vicious Piebola

That’s what the nylon scrubby thing is for. If things are really stuck, use a metal spatula to scrape off the worst of it. A properly seasoned iron skillet should be pretty much nonstick. The whole purpose of having cast iron is to build up that oil coating in layers so stuff doesn’t stick. You can rinse it in hot water, but only briefly or you’ll have to start the seasoning process over again.

re: #257 BeachDem

Since the entire state of SC is a gerrymandered cesspool, we Dems have had our GOTV work cut out for us from the start.

True, but in theory that’s where turnout really works, because gerrymandering works by maximizing the number districts that are narrowly in favor of one party. So getting eligible voters who traditionally stay home to the polls can easily flip those areas. It’s only a matter of persuasion.

Evening Lizards. Went straight from work to the polls. Voted either D or I. If there was only a R candidate, did a write in using a valid local name. Then I got home and opened up the browser to see this.

Attorney General Wasden warns Idahoans to beware of Election Day voter scam

Short story is this.

Complaints reported to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division indicate that someone is calling potential voters and offering to pay them $25 for their votes.

/// Gee I wonder who they are wanting people to vote for?

It’s not an R I can assure you of that. I can only wonder that if after the election, a D actually manages to win an office if some of these “calls” will suddenly see the light of day as proof of voter fraud.

Yes, I actually think this is a real possibility.

Dear Democrats, I told you if you ran away from Obama you’d fuck yourselves.

How can Democratic candidates expect people to be enthusiastic about voting for them when, at election time, so many of them seem to stand for little more than “I’m not a Republican”? That’s enough for those of us who pay attention to politics between elections. That demonstrably isn’t enough to send average (Normal?) Dem voters flocking to the polls.

Conversely, Republicans have a built-in advantage here because their voters will vote for them, and turn out in numbers, simply because they are Republicans.

Precisely. I mean I get that they can’t come off as cheerleaders for POTUS but they should be extolling POTUS’s accomplishments rather than distancing them. I am upset with those who only turn out for presidential elections but I may be even more upset with the cowardly behavior I see from Dem politicians on Obama. You don’t have to embrace him at every turn but it’s not like he has zero accomplishments.
