It also didn’t help that the Republican voting base was pretty fractured, whereas Al Franken (I know, I know) has a relatively good reputation and Governor Dayton, a Democrat, is quite well-respected. Right what happened in Yugoslavia was the result of centuries of ethnic tensions. The conflict over Kosovo goes back to a battle in 1389. Think about that. That’s a century before Columbus. What about that referendum in TN, the “We can ban abortion/birth control/etc and the Feds can’t tell us no” shit?

There are 4 state ballot measures, to amend the constitution. We don’t have a voter initiative process here, they have to pass the legislature before they can appear on the ballot. That one, which basically says that the state can pass any laws / regulations it want’s on abortion is probably going to pass. The wording is like this…

Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion. The people retain the right through their elected state representatives and state senators to enact, amend, or repeal statutes regarding abortion, including, but not limited to, circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest or when necessary to save the life of the mother.

Also, the one that will outlaw any state income tax is going to win hands down. So we here in TN can continue to pay a 9.875% sales tax and have poor services.

Alright, Lizardim. I am heading to bed. I’m fully expecting a Republican majority - has Nate Silver ever been wrong? - but, hey, at least Minnesota did its part and fought off the derp for another two years. I’ll see you guys on the morrow, and don’t despair - remember, this is the rare chance for the Republicans to show their true colors, which is sure to make 2016 the most epic wingnut meltdown in living memory.

Right what happened in Yugoslavia was the result of centuries of ethnic tensions. The conflict over Kosovo goes back to a battle in 1389. Think about that. That’s a century before Columbus. And I’m not even touching on the Utasse during WWII. I get that Tardis is understandably worried since a relative of his imam was threatened but I don’t like this rhetoric when it’s wingnuts likening Obama and Dems to Nazis or wahtever and I don’t like it here.

I’m a stickler for accuracy on this point because I don’t want to let the GOP and RWNJs off the hook for their proto-fascist tendencies (especially their search for scapegoats) by making accusations of literal fascism/pogroms etc.

The rhetoric between what was being said against Bosnians in the early 90’s, to what Republicans are saying about Muslims now, is nearly identical. I feel it to be a reasonable comparison.

You mean when there was an actual shooting war going on, a civil war, with no central government capable of putting a stop to it?

The US isn’t Bosnia. You’re starting to sound as whacked-out as any of the “persecuted” Christians.

I really think they’ll alienate a lot of people between now and 2016 and set up 2016 nicely for the Dems to retake one or if we’re really fortunate both houses.

Should have just let Tilden and the Dems win that one and then fight on again in 1880 but nope. Ending Reconstruction as the “compromise” was really the worst thing that could have been done. So, NPR is reporting that the Republicans have picked up 5 of the 6 seats needed to control the Senate. That leaves the race in Alaska could determine the final Senate make-up.

I voted early this afternoon any my polling place was very busy. Didn’t get any firm numbers about turnout but there was a line waiting to sign in.

My prediction? I think Democrat Mark Begich will keep his Senate seat. Throughout his term he has been very attentive to Alaskan issues. Mean while his opponent, Dan Sullivan, has not been very specific about what he would be advocating for Alaska if he were to be elected. Sullivan is also perceived as an “outsider” having spent considerable time outside the State working for the Bush Admin.

Unfortunately that’s true across the entire south. Obama only got 9% of the white vote in Alabama and Miss. Texas should be a competitive state, given its majority-minority demographics. But, just as in GA, whites in TX vote 75% R.

That’s the big difference between TX and CA, two states with similar demographics. TX stays solid red due to 75% of whites voting R. In CA, OTOH, whites vote about 50-50, meaning Dems usually win easily due to their strength among virtually all minority communities.

Religion is a huge part of this. The south is filled with white evangelicals, the most conservative and reliably repub of all voters. In most of the rest of the country, especially places like Calif., the white evangelical population is way smaller. Meaning that the textbooks can discuss evolution and climate change.

And here in South Teabaggistan (too small for a republic, too big for an insane asylum), everybody’s favorites:

Joe “You Lie” Wilson, wins with 65% of the vote
Trey “Imma gonna have a real BENGHAZI hearing, y’all” wins with 85%
Mark “hiking the Appalachian Trail and ripping of the state to the tune of megabucks)…runs unopposed.

I give up. Nikki Fucking Haley, the most horrible governor imaginable, who leaves this state with one of the highest number of uninsured in the country and refuses to expand Medicaid, among her other charming attributes, wins by 17 points, and on it goes.

I don’t know if the people in this state are terminally stupid or they’re just so mesmerized by the R bullshit that they’ll vote against their self-interests every fucking time.

Doug Douchebag wins governor in AZ…did you expect that someone with integrity would win? Over under on how long till he gets indicted….

On a practical level, nothing is going to move in the senate since there are not enough votes to overcome a veto but dear god, once these tea party freaks get into office, they will not get voted out. They won’t. These morons caused a government shutdown and they haven’t moved away from economic policies that screwed this country over for decades and still people vote for them. There is no logical reason, no matter how much Obama has misstepped on key issues, why these idiots should be put back into power.

I wonder how Bob Dole deep down really feels about Pat Roberts after the UN treaty vote and if he regrets throwing any support to him.

It’ll be after the War on Christmas season.

Not till January at the earliest. Maybe even February.
