Confederate Flag Wavers *Heart* Mia Love

More: Mia Love Tries to Be the First Black Republican Woman in Congress

Getty Image

Mia Love is staring out at a sea of white faces. Just as she did the night before, and the night before that. It’s the same story here in Lehi, Utah, at the Lehi Legacy Recreation Center, where kids are learning karate in the room next door; the same story at the South Jordan Library, 14 miles away; the same story at a rally in the shadow of the Juab County Fairgrounds, “Home of the Ute Stampede,” where banner ads promote an upcoming demolition derby and a group of teenagers are huddled around a picnic table, agreeing that they don’t have a problem with gay marriage, as long as nobody tries to turn them gay.

White, white, white. In nearly every room Love enters as she stumps her way across Utah’s 4th District on a quest to become the first black female Republican in Congress, she is not just the only black person there. She’s the only person of any color, unless you count farmer tans.

This 39-year-old, Brooklyn-born daughter of Haitian immigrants and former mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, seems completely at home in a crowd of mostly old white dudes. What’s more, she gets a warmer reception here than when she made a speech at the University of Chicago Law School in 2013. Her advisers had urged her to stay way the hell away from the Windy City. “That’s Obamatown,” they told her. “Those people will eat you alive.”

After she spoke in Chicago, a black woman in the audience got up and said, “I don’t understand how you can be a black female living in Utah as a Republican in today’s America.”

Love came back with Martin Luther King Jr.

“I told her I wasn’t elected in Saratoga Springs because of my race or my gender or my heels. I was elected by the people there because I had a plan and a vision to get us financially stable,” she said. “Think about people like Martin Luther King. Imagine if he decided to fit into this mold that society told him to fit into. Imagine if he just listened to the government when they told him he was a second-class citizen.”

I just can’t understand any of the steps where some common sense didn’t kick in:
1.) Maybe I shouldn’t buy a confederate flag.
2.) Now that I’m sober maybe I should throw out that confederate flag
3.) Maybe I shouldn’t take my confederate flag to a republican rally
4.) Maybe I shouldn’t take my confederate flag to a rally by the first AA GOP congresswoman

3 EPR-radar  Nov 7, 2014 10:24:34am

A black politician in the US consenting to speak to a crowd with a confederate flag on display is much like a jewish politician in Germany consenting to speak to a crowd with a Nazi flag on display.

WTFITS?

Allegedly one of the men sent to Southern Utah from Salt Lake City by Brigham Young to start the (unsuccessful) Cotton Mission was a slave overseer/owner from the Deep South. In any case, there was a lot of sympathy towards the secessionist South by Mormon Utah Territory both before and after the Civil War. That might be due to a plank in the 1856 Republican Party platform, which was to get rid of the “twin relics of barbarism: slavery and polygamy.”

Quite a number of Southern Civil War types were involved (as US Army) in the Utah War of 1857-58 and the occupation. Among them was Albert Sidney Johnston.

I knew that Utah had some limited support for the Confederacy back in the Great War of Northern Aggression, but I thought the mainstream was pretty non-Confederate. Looks like the influence of the Confederacy has grown since then.

1. We need to primary John McCain, ‘cause upchuck has oppo research, you guys. (Will McCain even run again? He’ll be about 120 years old; and everyone on the planet has oppo research against McCain.)

2. He’s begging for money to launch a poster campaign against Lena Dunham. (AWARD-WINNING JOURNALISM)

3. He’s waiting for the appropriate time to OUT President Obama. (Can’t do it now because he’s worried about his family’s safety.)

4. There’s another airline conspiracy against him—a flight delay was engineered to keep him from publishing information about Loretta Lynch.

5. He’s doing something nefarious about Hillary.

6. There are gay and lesbian TSA agents in Fresno.

Am I the only one who finds Love’s answer here to be nonresponsive bullshit?

The questioner is asking how one can be a black female Republican when Republican’s policies are anti-black and anti-female. Love responds with bullshit about fitting a mold.

I think it’s more the natural progression as people start expressing their inner racism. While you’d be hard-pressed to get anyone (aside from explicit white supremacists) to admit to wanting slavery, you’d surely find a lot who are sympathetic to the idea of white people whose wishes are being suppressed by them uppity blacks, which is where I think the modern rose-colored-glasses view of the Confederacy comes from.

God, Republicans are just going to keep pushing that “MLK, Jr was a conservative” horseshit, aren’t they?

Of course. They consider it an unanswerable move, but it’s based entirely on their authoritarian view of the world. That’s why they attack Michael Mann and Phil Jones to debunk AGW, rather than addressing the Science, or why they attack Darwin to debunk Evolution rather than addressing THAT Science. They think invoking MLK provides a magical shield against accusations of either racism or insufficient sensitivity to racism in others. They also see isolated quotes as more relevant than a person’s whole life’s work.

I used to routinely get into arguments with a Creationist who kept flogging things various Evolutionists had SAID, while ignoring the data they found.

I knew that Utah had some limited support for the Confederacy back in the Great War of Northern Aggression, but I thought the mainstream was pretty non-Confederate. Looks like the influence of the Confederacy has grown since then.

I hesitate to bring this up, but the dominant church in Utah used to prohibit men with black skin from holding its priesthood until 1978. It was a serious problem in the 1960s and 1970s. It got to where other private universities refused to play Brigham Young University because there would be protests. Some of the leaders of that church also said some terribly, terribly racist stuff about black people. (For those of you who have a Mormon background, “not valiant in the pre-existence” should ring a bell.)

So on top of your usual white people racism (and I’m saying this as a woman of pale, freckled pigmentation), you had, up until 36 years ago, church sanctioned racism.

She claims she never said she wants to eliminate the DOE, but she’s on video saying exactly that.

She claims she never supported the government shut down. Yet, she attended a demonstration celebrating the fact that they shut the government down.

Hey, remember that friend of Robert Spencer who was brought up in association with the election in Donetsk? Well, get a load of this:

Survival Strategy
By Srdja Trifkovic

Since the late 1800’s the Jews have had a disproportionate impact on a host of intellectual trends and political movements which have fundamentally altered the civilization of Europe and its overseas offspring in a manner deeply detrimental to the family, nation, culture, racial solidarity, social coherence, tradition, morality and faith. Spontaneously or deliberately, those ideas and movements — Marxism (including neoconservatism as the bastard child of Trotskyism), Freudianism, Frankfurt School cultural criticism, Bosnian anthropology, etc. — have eroded “the West” to the point where its demographic and cultural survival is uncertain. The erosion is continuing, allegedly in the name of propositional principles and universal values, and it is pursued with escalating ferocity.’

From some preliminary numbers I have seen it was that way all over the nation. Some 19% of eligible votes showed up to vote. That is preliminary number but when I was judge of elections for my precinct for a 4 year term, that is about what I saw during midterms. Hell, presidential election were lucky to bring in 40% of eligible voters. A sorry situation.

Yep. My Wingnut Cousin keeps liking things like “Should Americans be allowed to fly the Flag anywhere they want?”, as if there’s some movement afoot to ban flags. The whole goal is to get them to feel threatened and give the Jinogoistic response. First trigger the feeling of powerlessness - “They’re gonna take our FLAGS!!!”. Then provide them a chance to express their outrage - “We’ve gotta fight back! We should be able to fly them ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!!!”

How many of the eligible voters voted? How many of them voted R? In percent or absolute numbers…

Here’s the breakdown for the Senate:

As no final tallies are available for 2014, we calculated the total number of votes cast in the most recent election cycle by adding together the total number of votes cast for Republican Senate candidates and the total number cast for Democrats using numbers reported by Politico. This required us to make a few judgment calls. In Alabama, where Sen. Jeff Sessions (R) ran unopposed, we tallied no votes for either party. In Kansas, where incumbent Republican Pat Roberts faced two independent challengers, we tallied all of Roberts’ votes for the GOP and zero votes for the Democrats. In Oklahoma and South Carolina, where both Senate seats were up for election (one in a general election and one in a special election), we counted the results of both elections towards both parties’ totals. The result, as of 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, was a total of 22,524,388 votes cast for Republicans and 19,594,164. Thus, based on our preliminary figures, just under 3 million more Americans voted for a Republican Senate candidate in the 2014 cycle than voted for a Democrat.

Meaning Republicans got 53.47% of the vote.

33 Seats were up for election, so a 7 percent vote margin resulted in a 7 seat flip, for the entire chamber, or a 14 seat power shift from an accounting perspective. Of course since only a third of the Senate was up for election the actual vote difference arguably had a three times greater impact than it should have had, or would have had in a Parliamentary system.

We saw what happened when he nominated Hagel for Defense Sec. So yep. Obama could duplicate Reagan’s appointees and they’d find some fault with them.

re: #134 Carl LaFong

Mia Love & Joni Ernst or Wendy Davis & Sandra Fluke?

Hmmmmm. Let’s see. Wendy & Sandra, in a Tom Sizemore shift from the early days of feminism, now demand the government enter and occupy their vaginas. Their bodies. ‘Please tell me what to do to my body’, they chorused. ‘Their taxes, my body, the fed’s vagina!’

A no-brainer.
