Dr. Craig Spencer in Guinea

More good news from the Ebola front tonight as New York’s Dr. Craig Spencer continues to improve, is playing a banjo and riding an exercise bike, and is expected to be released from isolation soon; another success story for US medicine against this potentially lethal virus.

A spokeswoman for the city Health and Hospitals Corporation says Dr. Craig Spencer requested the banjo and an exercise bike and has been using both.

Spencer tested positive for Ebola after treating patients in the West African nation of Guinea with the group Doctors Without Borders. He has been in an isolation room at Bellevue Hospital since Oct. 23.

Spencer’s condition was upgraded from serious to stable over the weekend, and Raju said Thursday that officials hope Spencer’s isolation can be lifted soon.

He’s never ran for anything before. Even Herman Cain had ran for the Senate I believe. I don’t think Carson’s ever been elected to anything ever. Now that I think about it, why do we need an AG anyway? We don’t need all of the Federal judges the Republicans have refused fill.

Hell, with the Sov Cit movement taking over the GOP, all we need are Constitutional Sheriffs and Citizens Grand juries to handle things, just like the Constitution says.

Of course. They’ll characterize the President’s nomination as “rushed,” that they need time to consider her, but of course with the upcoming holidays they can’t give the nomination their full attention. That they’ll get back to it in January, when the new Congress meets and can consider her nomination properly.

Many have noted that the current dynamic in American politics is rural vs. urban as much as anything else.

From a local Iowa news outlet (what we used to call “newspapers”):

Paint rural Iowa red

[…]

We were crestfallen when the nicest man in US politics, Sen. Daryl Beall of Fort Dodge, lost his District 5 seat covering Pocahontas, Calhoun, Webster and Humboldt counties. And we were disappointed but not surprised that Democrat Bruce Braley lost to Republican Joni Ernst, whose main claim to fame was that she castrated hogs. The Republic will survive.

[…]

Beall’s loss leaves Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal of Council Bluffs as the only Democratic legislator west of Interstate 35. This may have been a national wave election for the GOP, a rebuff of President Obama and all that. But Democrats did not erode from the wind-blown soils of western Iowa in this gully-washer. It took decades of progressive indifference to solidify rural Iowa as Republican. If Daryl Beall gets beat 2-to-1 in Pocahontas County after working like the BVU Beaver that he is, no other Democratic legislative candidate dare tread there. It did not matter that Beall was the foremost advocate for military veterans or the disabled in his caucus, or that his greatest joy was in constituent service. He was a Democrat, and this has become hostile territory. […]

Gov. Branstad blasted out Jack Hatch, who won only Johnson County (Iowa City) and also ignored rural voters. The political balance at the Statehouse remains unchanged, with Gronstal providing a crucial check on Branstad excesses. We have every confidence that these two pragmatists will figure out how to move Iowa forward.

Bruce Braley largely ignored western Iowa. He got beat in rural precincts, even in his own northeast Iowa district. He ran a lazy campaign highlighted by awful miscues. Yet, we must say that Braley had to spend far too much time running against the Koch Brothers, Karl Rove and the bajillions of dollars these puppet masters raised so Washington would be totally in the throes of big corporate power. We can only hope that Ernst will use her new star power and majority status for the benefit of Iowa. The balance of power actually doesn’t change much. Obama cannot nominate and Congress cannot legislate over his veto. Same as the last six years.

Jim Mowrer discovered first-hand the power of the Republican shift along the rural reaches. […] We have complained many times that the Boone Democrat did not spend enough windshield time up and down Highway 71. The 28-year-old apparently had almost no political mentoring and even less institutional support. His entire campaign was justified when Mowrer put on a brilliant debate performance on Iowa Public Television, giving the loudmouth Know-Nothing everything he could handle. King will continue to apply the brakes to immigration reform and will do everything he can to obstruct progress in Washington. He is congressman-for-life from a district that he does nothing to help, and we will continue to skewer him for life until he quits shaming God’s children.

[…]

The urban snob (like… um… me) approach to topics can not win out in rural America. Urban elite candidates will not be able to govern America without being able to reach the rural half of the nation. The Democratic party needs to be able to identify the common issues for both rural and urban America, if we as a nation will ever be able to get DC into gear and do what needs to be done.

Libya faces chaos as top court rejects elected assembly

In a televised ruling likely to deepen these divisions and hamper the United Nations’ mediation efforts, the Supreme Court invalidated the election of the House of Representatives, which has fled to the eastern city of Tobruk. The court said a committee that prepared the election law had violated Libya’s provisional constitution.

The June election produced an assembly with a strong showing of liberals and federalists, annoying Islamists with links to Operation Dawn, which seized Tripoli two months later.

The Supreme Court is based in Tripoli, where Dawn has reinstated the previous parliament, the General National Congress (GNC), where Islamists had been stronger.

Well if the 2nd amendment is the only one that counts, then if a president can keep getting elected they can stay for life.

195 psddluva4evah  Nov 7, 2014 6:53:48pm

Woo. Today’s tour started at 6 30am and ended at about 230pm. The tour of the island was longer, but the majority of the circle island tour was on the bus and with scenic sites. Today’s tour of the Pearl Harbor sites was mostly on the boats and on the memorial site. So it was ALL sun beaming down on top of us. Felt like I lost 30 lbs from sweating alone! But it was a good day. Got to visit the “Mighty Mo” and the US Arizona memorial and Punchbowl National Cemetery.

BTW, that’s supposed to be USS Missouri, but stupid auto spell checker

SELMA: Official Trailer: t.co

Surprisingly the first big budget big screen film telling of the MLK story. don’t know bout u guys, but the TV version with Paul Winfield, is STILL the go to portrayal in many African American households. Still with big money like Oprah Winfrey producing this, I kinda can’t wait to see it.

I was trying to be respectful. Rooney was in the Army during WW2 and worked his ass off for many years before getting to the point of becoming a righteousness dick, it can be argued he earned that right and he was funny and witty but Chuck certainly hasn’t/isn’t

re: #38 Targetpractice

Of course. They’ll characterize the President’s nomination as “rushed,” that they need time to consider her, but of course with the upcoming holidays they can’t give the nomination their full attention. That they’ll get back to it in January, when the new Congress meets and can consider her nomination properly.

AG nominations normally take a while, just because of all the senators’ questions and case info that has to be gone over.

DF, read what you just posted: they are different in degree but not in kind. One uses a pseudo-intellectual cover to pretend he’s better but there really isn’t any significant difference in the quality of the arguments from either of them. Historically, on the right in America, this is a common occurrence and can be seen more clearly in the distinction between the KKK and the cleaned up “citizens councils” that argued for the same things but in more polite language.

Right. And honestly, let’s make this clear. If Lena Dunham never expressed a political opinion in her life. Would she even be given a second thought by Williamson, Dunham, or Shapiro? Williamson sees her as a daughter of privilege who strikes poses instead of doing

She writes and stars in a TV show that many thousands of people enjoy. You don’t have to be a fan of hers (I am not) but most of this bogus outrage about her is down to misogyny. I am disappointed that someone who is so strident about defending the GOP against charges of a “war on women” is marching to this idiotic drum beat.

I’ve never watched the show myself but the attacks on her are just disgusting. She’s a young woman comfortable with who she is and that somehow offends the sensibilities of Williamson and the other dinosaurs at NRO. Tough shit for them. It’s the 21st century.

Yeah I am not following this at all. So Williamson doesn’t like the behavior of the characters on Ms. Dunham’s fictional show. Okay, so that’s excuse to berate her for something that happened when she was seven? Really, what the hell? And I don’t see what’s culturally destructive about that either. Not every show can be up to Mr. Williamson’s standards I guess. Should we frown on shows that feature criminal protagonists? As I got at above, Lena Dunham’s show really wasn’t a thought on their mind until she spoke out on issues that they had a problem with. Using the show as an excuse to attack her is a really lame excuse.

It is possible to separate disliking the artistic endeavor from disliking the artist herself. I consider Tom Cruise an absolute nutcase, but i still enjoy watching him act on screen, for example.

Girls may not be your cup of tea. It’s not mine. But it’s a free country, Lena D has a network and sponsors willing to air her show, and a publisher and readers for her books. She doesn’t need to cater to everyone’s sensibilities. If K Williamson doesn’t like her, then no one is forcing him to pay attention to her.

I think that there are some potentially problematic things in what she wrote in her book. But.

Dark hasn’t been able to provide any reasons beyond “National Review told me she was bad.” I can’t say I’m surprised by that, but I think it’s pretty disgusting, especially given some of the horrific things this author has written/expressed that have been well documented here that Dark is absolutely refusing to address. Here’s an interesting story. This one isn’t from the South, mind you, its from Delaware:

School system gets 140 up-armored whiteboards to protect students (VIDEO)

The Colonial School District located in New Castle, Delaware received a truckload of donated ballistically reinforced whiteboards as part of a pilot program in an attempt to increase security.

The boards, manufactured by Maryland-based Hardwire LLC, were paid for through donations from Delmarva Power, the Delaware City Refining Company and Monroe Energy. As such, the boards, which cost sell for $400 apiece, cost the school nothing.

The boards, designated for Gunning Bedford Middle School and Pleasantville Elementary, come in different models with staff at the front desk of the school being issued thicker boards able to withstand fire from heavier weapons.

“Hopefully it will never get used,” Tanya Aviola, a guidance counselor told the Delaware News Journal. “I think it makes us feel a little safer, like, we have something for us to defend ourselves in case something horrible happens.”

Something ancient is awakening, stirred from its slumber by all those bomb tests:

Earthquake swarm intensifies in Nevada desert

A swarm of hundreds of earthquakes that has been striking a corner of the Nevada desert near the Oregon border for months has intensified in recent days, prompting new warnings from seismologists.

About 750 earthquakes, mostly of magnitude 2 to 3, have struck the area about 50 miles southeast of Lakeview, Ore., since July, said Ian Madin, chief scientist for Oregon’s Department of Geology and Mineral Industries.

The earthquakes have become steadily stronger. Six earthquakes of magnitude 4 or higher have struck the area since Tuesday, and about 40 struck in the 24 hours ending Friday morning, Madin said.

“This week it has just gone crazy,” Madin said.

Up-armored white boards. Right. The kinetic energy of a bullet doesn’t go away. Stop a 9mm round cold at close range and you now have to do something with the 380+ ft-lbs of energy it has. A 5.56 round comes in at more than 1500 ft-lbs.

Odd that it’s considered reasonable to equip grade school children with expensive and ineffective things like up-armored white boards, but it’s considered unreasonable to enact common-sense gun regulations.

My girlfriend enjoys the show, I don’t hate it but it has no real appeal for me, so we watch other things together. But to the person’s point that it elevates slacking I say fuck you. This young generation did more to go to school and get degrees by far than any other previous cohort - like they were told by old people. They entered the most shitty economy ever for young college grads - one that was fucked up by the olds. And now many are saddled with debt none of us could imagined when we left school. So i say give them a little slack. Or a ton.

I believe they are way better than the people I knew at 24.

What I get tired of as someone in that generation is hearing how we’re all about “instant gratification” and all sorts of other cracks.it gets old real fast.

It seems about as effective as those bulletproof backpacks (those ads were about the creepiest ever)

and those mats or whatever they were that kids were supposed to roll up in if there was a school shooter.

Yeah, great ways for gun-fucking companies to get rich, but “it’s too soon” to talk about gun regulations.

343 HappyWarrior  Nov 7, 2014 9:51:12pm

What gets me on the subject of guns. It’s that there’s always desperation to shift the subject from easy access to guns to more cultural war stuff. And I really get tired of hearing how it’s the lack of prayer in public schools or shifting cultural tides on things like abortion or SSM that are responsible for these tragedies but not the elephant in the room. No one seems willing to discuss that we have an incredibly high amount of not just school shootings but gun violence period. And the second any politician attempts that conversation, he’s immediately blacklisted as a “gun-grabber” and you never really hear from him again. It’s not right.

It’s pristine in appearance, but it smells like something from Dante’s Inferno. Which, with my current case of stuffy nose, means I got partway through chopping it before noticing.

I may be out of touch for the next few days, because I think I need to cauterize every surface in the kitchen and abrade away a few layers of skin.

You may have created what’s known around here as “stinky tofu” (臭豆腐 chou doufu) - a kind of fermented tofu. Some street vendors near the campus sell it, and you can smell it from yards away. Amazingly, it tastes pretty good.

For those who missed it, this week was the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, though perhaps you’ve seen various news stories announcing the discovery of an early horse fossil carrying a foal, or the 9000 year old froze bison from Siberia.

Among the posters at the convention was this:

CENSORSHIP OF HUMAN EVOLUTION EDUCATION IN TURKEY
KAYA, Anna Heumann, The International Childcare and Educational Center, Helsinki,
Finland; KAYA, Ferhat, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland

Efforts stemming from the Turkish government’s religious agenda to severely censor students’ access to modern evolution theory threatens educational freedom. In Turkish high school classrooms, the coverage of evolution is vague and human evolution is ignored entirely, leaving any questions about human origins to be answered by creationist ideas taught simultaneously in mandatory religion courses and science class. This study addresses the connection between students in the Turkish public education system who are deprived of the principles of human evolution and educators who are intellectually and pedagogically unequipped to teach the scientific facts of human origins. All high school textbooks are either written by or filtered through the Ministry of National
Education, and therefore are subject to political bias.

The content of Finnish high school biology textbooks is analyzed and used here as a counter example in critiquing and making recommendations for amending the coverage of human evolution in Turkish high
school biology textbooks. We suggest a framework for an effective coverage of human evolution at the high school level and material pertinent to additional human evolution coverage added to curricula for university students in biology and science education. We offer possible repercussions, both for the paradoxically secular Turkish education system and society at large, of teaching human evolution.

Hmmm… I wonder what they would find if they compared American textbooks to Finnish textbooks?

The entire idea of using the white board at all, let alone to “disable” is fucking ridiculous. You’d be better off leaving your hands free and just grappling the shooter, you’d close the gap much faster that way and have some kind of chance at pinning their arms / controlling the hand with the gun. Odds are you’re getting shot anyway, so if you’re lucky enough not to have your brain just freeze the hell up and you are actually able to choose to fight you’re best off not obscuring your own field of vision.

re: #380 Eventual Carrion

The bad thing about this ‘innovation’ is that “Necessity is the mother of invention”.

The concept is pretty harebrained. Consider this. Someone walks into a classroom with a semiautomatic weapon. The bulletproof whiteboard is on a table in the corner, let’s say 20 feet from the teacher. By the time he or she lunges for the whiteboard/shield, the gunman has plenty of time to mow the teacher down.

The concept assumes the teacher is holding the whiteboard all the time. No teacher would do that.

Someone above mentioned the physics involved, too. The kinetic energy of the bullets could very well knock the teacher off balance.

Gee, wouldn’t be a good idea just to reduce the possibility of someone entering a school armed to the teeth, like with gun control laws? Not in America, godammit. We need to protect our kids with bulletproof gadgets and arm the teachers to the teeth, because that’s makes total sense.

There’s much more important news now. Ben Carson is running for President.

I have been amused by all the RWNJs trying to rationalize why the GOP will rise up and nominate Ben Carson for POTUS. You know, because the Republican party is going to nominate a guy who’s never held a single elected office for the most powerful job in the country. I mean, it’s not like they don’t have Governors and Senators to pick from or anything.

Funniest comment I saw yesterday about Ben Carson’s chances:

“Carson has had a more prolific medical career than Hillary has had a political one. Carson is just about as well known globally as Hillary. His books, achievements, and movie has catapulted him into global stardom. I don’t know about this map. It has my county in brown, but we only have two pawnshops that sell guns, while we have three museums and a fairly large library (and a Bookmobile).

Agreed. The 3 museums of Chicago’s Museum Campus likely employ more people than all the people employed in gun stores in any two counties in Illinois. They certainly have more floor space.

Right. It really doesn’t tell you a lot of anything. I mean if they want to argue that in many parts of the country that guns are valued more heavily over education, I’d agree with that but this doesn’t really tell anything.

Agreed. It’s a lazily made, poorly researched piece of crap ‘county map’, whose main purpose is to inflame the opinions of those who consider themselves educated and cultured against the “gun-loving rubes”. Is it as toxic as the worst pro-gun memes? Heck No! But it is still toxic, as it plays to prejudice and its effect is to make discussion impossible.

418 HappyWarrior  Nov 8, 2014 8:38:45am

What’s dishonest about it is it really ignores that your small counties really are going to be limited in far as museums and libraries. Like I’d say your average county of 10K probably has maybe one or two libraries and maybe one museum. And there will be more gun stores due to the fact that those are private entities. It’s stupid. I’m all for criticizing the guns over knowledge culture that prevails too often but that map is just dishonest.

Speaking of idiotic confirmation bias, more on the moronic exit poll in South Carolina.

Woodard and his partner, an African-American doctoral candidate at the University of South Carolina, Paul White Jr., predicted — rightly — that Scott (61 percent) would win more votes than Graham (54 percent). They suspected that they would then find people who would agree with some of the questions posed to them about race, while also revealing that they voted for Scott.

That would then test the established literature that, as Woodard put it: “People vote for racial reasons in the South.”

“A lot of people would confirm themselves on the racial measures. ‘Well yeah I do think blacks are too demanding,’” he explained. “But then what did they do? They turn around and voted for Tim Scott!”

talkingpointsmemo.com

Ahem, let us also factor into the equation that Lindsey Graham has many detractors in SC from Republicans who think he is far too leftist…and, more importantly, Tim Scott’s opponent was also black—and a woman—and who had no name recognition and no money (and she still got more votes than Lindsey’s main Dem opponent.)

When these yahoos publish their “research” report, people should gather in great numbers to point and laugh.
