KSTP News Won’t Back Down From #pointergate

The stupid continues
Media • Views: 41,398

KSTP News in Minneapolis has posted another story related to their laughable attempt to frame Mayor Betsy Hodges as supporting gangs. So, do you think they apologized? Said they would fire the reporter and producers responsible? Guess again

Law enforcement agencies say the criticism of the photo of Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges making what they call a gang sign with a convicted felon misses the point.

Oh, please, tell us what the point is.

Michael Quinn, who spent more than 30 years in law enforcement, including 25 years with Minneapolis Police, says the photo is not about race, or police being “alarmists.”

Well, except for the part where they freaked out about a black guy pointing, but go on.

Quinn says he does not believe Mayor Hodges endorses gangs and says she “probably didn’t even know what the hand gesture meant.”

It meant, “Hey look, I’m standing next to the Mayor.”

Quinn says the gesture is a “known gang sign of one of the most violent gangs in Minneapolis and they will use this to their advantage.”

It’s also a hand gesture common to every human culture on the planet.

Quinn says there is a reason the man posted the photo on his website and he says, “There could be another gang that would take it as a show of disrespect and commit another crime to solve the dispute.”

Or it could be to say to his friends, “Hey, here’s a picture of me standing next to the Mayor”. I mean if he was a white guy, that would be obvious, but he’s black so it may be a gang sign, not that this has anything to do with race.

What the general public does not understand, Quinn says, “is the signs have real meaning on the street and gangs take them seriously and people have died for simply flashing a gang sign. That’s all we are saying. This is serious and can lead to serious consequences.”

No, this is stupid and you need to apologize.

Is there some kind of a genetic Darwin-type of split going on in the human race?

It’s almost like there is a group of people regressing. They seem to fail at language, understanding and wanting to be part of the greater social group.

I think they want to be tribal, reclusive, ignorant and suspicious of everything. And, they are actually denying progress in social and scientific achievements. They want disease, a crazy climate, wars, feudal control, the entire dark ages, or worse.

I guess living in rudimentary housing, being hunter gatherers and not wanting to know of what is really going on outside their tribe is what they want.

Damn. I feel sorry for some of them, they can’t seem so even stop the regressing. No wonder they deny Evolution.

Wouldn’t it be really fun if he went to the party looking like one of his model warriors?

“Hello police? Yeah, there’s this guy at this kiddie birthday party and he’s intimidating looking with all these huge unnatural muscles, and appears to have all kinds of guns, cannons, missiles, armament and god-knows-what-else strapped on. Can you get here fast before he kills everyone. And dare I forget…he’s got a bunch of shrunken skulls lashed to his belt and appears to be wearing animal skins!!!”

Good luck with that:

Ad campaign to target Mississippi attitudes on homosexuality

Mary Jane Kennedy considers herself a conservative Christian Republican, and she’s led Bible studies in her native Mississippi for decades. She’s also the mother of two gay sons and one of the faces in a new advertising campaign aimed at softening religious opposition in the Deep South to equal rights for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

The Washington-based Human Rights Campaign is taking on the region’s long-standing church-based opposition to homosexuality in a series of groundbreaking television commercials, direct-mail messages and phone-bank operations designed to promote equality and legal protections for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi.

[…]

I suspicious already because, well, look, their spokesperson is doing gang signs:

The other Dad and I spoke a week ago, and he said “We’ll be at the same park as last time, around 1:00”

Since that time, the Mom’s talked back and forth, arranged 5-6 different times at three different parks. My wife was insisting we were leaving at the wrong time and I had no idea where we were going.

The party was at the same park as last time, and started around 1:00.

Yeah, this Pope seems to be sending several shots across the arch-conservative bow. He’s reminding people that he’s in charge, and that there are parts of the Catholic faith that the arch-conservatives here have been forgetting in their obsessions with abortion and gays.

Additionally, he came of age as a Jesuit in Argentina. He’s seen the evil that is the far right up close and personal. Their formation is really different from any others in the Roman Catholic church and it is making a very big surprise for those who thought he’d follow the established line. I wonder how many of the arch-conservatives nearly messed themselves when they heard him chose “Francis” as his pontifical name?

I also note that the asshat Bishop of Madison who was well liked by the previous administration has been smart enough to stfu, stfd and not draw attention to himself while he bides his time to retirement.

I read a couple of them ages ago and I agree that they are better. One of the interesting things about this episode — A Morbid Taste For Bones — was it took place in Wales, and Cadfael being Welsh himself made for an interesting conflict with the clerical higher-ups, i.e, sanctimonious bumpkins. It also had a strong female character who reminded me a lot of the wildling Ygritte in Game of Thrones.

Apropos of nothing, but I can never keep my mouth shut, I was just recalling the money I stole from my mom’s purse as a kid, and how guilty I felt about it for years, but adding it up in my mind my grand haul probably amounted to around $25, which she probably made in tips in one night waiting tables at Johnnie’s Fat Boy, so from now on I’m marking that down as “guilt expunged.”

Anyway, thanks for all the candy, mom, and thank you for listening,

There were a good number of things Andrew Jackson did wrong, but he did two things clearly right:

1. His aforementioned putting down of the Nullification Crisis.

2. His actions and example that helped eliminate property qualifications for voting. While only white men could vote at the end of Jackson’s life, the fact that all white men could vote was an improvement on the original situation and an important first step on the road to universal suffrage (defined here as the right of all adult citizens to vote).

As in some other Southern states, a key aspect is how the Union won. Other than the (admittedly critical) capture of Vicksburg, Grant and Sherman didn’t target Confederate forces in Mississippi so much as they deliberately set out to destroy the state’s ability to support said forces. It was ugly, impoverishing, and deeply humiliating to the white population of the state and they have not forgotten it.

Scorched Earth tactics won the war in Mississippi, but winning the peace required a longer-term and more-costly (both in money and blood) effort than the North was ultimately willing to make.

There’s a guy at work that’s exactly the opposite, and can’t stand the current Doctor. In fact, the only episode he’s liked involved the 2D creatures.

I rather like Capaldi’s 12th Doctor, though I think that’s because I grew weary of Tennant and Smith playing him like an overgrown man-child rather than the mysterious old grump that he’s generally been. Then again, I still rather fondly remember Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor because he could be funny with just a quirk of the eyebrow.

‘Irish alcoholism nature’ reason for job rejection for Irish teacher in South Korea

Katie Mulrennan, from County Kerry, had applied for a teaching job in Seoul.

She was told by an agency that their client did not hire Irish people due to their perceived drinking habits.

SNIP

The teacher had emailed the application when a job was advertised on listings website Craigslist in September.

She told the agency that she had been teaching English for over three years, in Barcelona, Oxford and Abu Dhabi as well as South Korea.

Last week, she received a reply that said: “I am sorry to inform you that my client does not hire Irish people due to the alcoholism nature of your kind”.

I visited Shrewsbury on my one trip to England. Part of the monastery the series is based at is still extant - it was kept to serve as a parish church. And they had at the time a Cadfael-centric tour that included seeing the herb garden.

She wants her own power and control.

Missy even notes this in the finale.

In theory, this would be be the irresistible force (Clara), vs. the immovable object (The Doctor).

Thing is, for some reason, the Doctor is much softer with Clara than any other companion in the new series. So, he gives way alot.

Something else unresolved. Why does the Doctor give into Clara so easily?

Good thing Taylor Swift left Country.

Carrie Underwood may not be your classic country s**t-kicker, but she’s definitely a s**t-stirrer … because she got the CMA crowd all riled up Wednesday night by taking a shot at the Prez.

Carrie and Brad Paisley got all political with a reference to Taylor Swift, whom they suggested has abandoned country music.

There’s a tiny bit of room for interpretation … whether the audience is going wild over the fact that the Democrats lost the Senate, or whether Obama is so unpopular he derailed his own party.

I think she knew the hick-music genre was going to be to constrictive.

Mexicans, especially of a certain class, also have prejudice against mestizos.

Americans who claim Cherokee (or whatever) blood are often very proud of it, but those same people would deny any African ancestry. Hence, the uproar about the African-Melungeon connections.

Oh why not just go full metal racist and do away with the 13th Amendment. You know they want to.

Oh, c’mon, they finally just ratified it in February of last year.

cbsnews.com

Even the Southern Baptist Convention beat them — the SB denomination came into being specifically as a schism from the Baptist denom, which was mostly abolitionist. The SBC was utteryly devoted to slavery, they had a sincere religious belief, they had scripture passages they cited to prove it was demanded by God… after a military defeat and a few new amendments took that away from them, they still insisted segregation was God’s will. Race-mixing was absolutely unbiblical.

In 1995, the SBC finally declared that “oh, whoops, I guess the Bible doesn’t actually say what we thought it said. We’ve been reading it wrong. Our bad.” They now believe that black people and white people can belong to the same congregation.

If he has not yet been charged with a crime, then the police cannot release criminal records. But a news agency can do its own research to find out if a person has a criminal record — court records would be one way to find convictions or acquittals.

Once a person is charged with a crime (as in “book ‘em, Dano!”), then the police at the discretion of the DA can release information about the accused.

It depends, most departments specifically tell employees they’re not allowed to the talk to the media (e.g., something like “all department communications to the media will be made through the Chief’s office or his designated press relations personnel”) or disclose information (for a number of reasons, including compromising investigations, etc.).

In addition, most officers have access to a statewide criminal information network, but most states also make it against the law to query the database for non-law enforcement reasons or disclose the information outside law enforcement personnel.

Right. The NCIC is only for law enforcement officers to use. And usually LEOs are reluctant to discuss ongoing cases, because advance publicity can sometimes prevent a conviction. But court proceedings are public record, and an enterprising reporter can do the legwork himself if he (or she) knows the jurisdiction of the trial.

Not that the South tried to help win the peace.

People forget that after the Civil War that the US was subjected to a long campaign of terrorism, and the terrorists won.

I didn’t say I felt sorry for Civil War-era white people in Mississippi, because I don’t. What I said was that harsh measures were used to compel their submission to lawful authority. Said measures were justified in my eyes, but white Mississippeans have never seen them that way. They thought and mostly still do thing themselves unjustly impoverished. They wrong to think that way, but it is what they think.

There are, however, some briefcases made to carry guns that can fired by pressing a concealed button in the handle. But those must be registered with the ATF as an ‘any other weapon’. This is of course tyranny and is Obama’s fault, because guns = freedom.

BTW, you should know that a majority agreed with ‘Chad’ and I in a recent Gallup pol:

More Than Six in 10 Americans Say Guns Make Homes Safer

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The percentage of Americans who believe having a gun in the house makes it a safer place to be (63%) has nearly doubled since 2000, when about one in three agreed with this. Three in 10 Americans say having a gun in the house makes it a more dangerous place.

Gallup originally asked Americans about their views on the implications of having a gun in the home in 1993, and then updated the measure in 2000. Between 2000 and 2006, less than half of Americans believed having a gun at home makes it safer — but since then, this percentage has significantly increased to a majority.

Republicans (81%) are about twice as likely as Democrats (41%) to believe having a gun improves home safety. About half of Democrats say having a gun makes a home a more dangerous place to be.

Although there is a gender gap in the results for this question, majorities of both men (67%) and women (58%) believe having a gun improves home safety. While one in three women say it makes for a more dangerous place to be, only one in four men say the same about guns in the home.

Polls prove nothing. I’m sure a poll done during the 1950s would have shown people thought smoking was healthy and seatbelts in cars were unnecessary.

The NRA has spent decades convincing the public that a safe home is a gun-owning home, just as the tobacco companies spent decades convincing people smoking was perfectly harmless.

Tobacco ≠ Firearms, since firearms can be safely used, while tobacco always hurts the user and others.

Moreover, while the NRA has been making its arguments for decades, the poll shows that the big shift began in the early ‘aughts’ and picked up steam after 2004. In 10 years, the number of people who said a gun in the home makes the home more dangerous dropped by 1/3rd.

Why is it that people who espouse ‘common sense’ are so fucking stupid?

Because “common sense” = “gut”. It replaces logic and complexity with a simplistic picture.

Fallacy of The Herd

Look, if you want to keep your own home and family “safe” with a gun, then that is the current state of the law and I can only accept it.

But the bigger fallacy is that we think that people carrying guns in public will make our streets, schools and shopping malls safer.

Six in ten Americans can’t name one renewable energy source.

Six in ten Americans aged 18-24 cannot find Iraq on a map of the Middle East.

Seven in ten Americans aged 18-24 believe that English is the most commonly spoken native language in the world.

Three in ten Americans can’t name the current vice-president.

etc.

Yeah, there’s the reality of it. But our nation’s wealth is on a hyper concentrated path already, even as the economy improves. As the legislature (and in a few more years, the Supreme Court) is becoming more and more wholly owned by the wealthy, this pattern isn’t about to change.

I saw the latest NRA slogan is “Stand and Fight”. Against what? As far as I’m aware, there’s no legislation pending anywhere.

I’ve been hearing “LIBURLZ WILL TAKE UR GUNZ!” for literally decades now. The most restrictive it’s ever been was under Clinton… And that’s passed away. The good (bad?) thing about paranoia and hatred is that it’s a bottomless well. Keep hitting that same key, re-draw the bogeyman a little now and again, and you can stay in business forever.

There are so many fucking guns in this country that even if you stopped importing and manufacturing them tomorrow, we’d still have the means laying around to be armed to the teeth for decades. It’s absurd.

I actually sold my AR-15 just this morning. Not the same as “getting it off the streets” so to speak but I had no use for it, and the money is going towards vacation and upgrades for my motorcycle. :)

That boogeyman’s not going to go away either unfortunately. Since as you say it’s been happening since Clinton. Seems to me that these gun groups use the fact that there’s a Democrat in the WH to stroke up fears about how their second amendment rights are under attack when the real irony is that the right’s hero Reagan had more of a record of being a “gun grabber”(I hate that term) than Obama has. What infuriates me though is the constant diversion after a tragedy like Sandy Hook. The need to blame anything but the absurdly easy access to guns. I don’t care if that makes me an “anti-gunner”, there’s too many paranoid people with guns in this country and I stand by that.

Dude is angling for a way to get traded, even if he doesn’t want to be. He’s a hole on the team where the ball goes and never comes back and LeBron isn’t going to stand for that much longer as he wants a real team that plays together. Someone has the power and someone does not.

Edit addition: My comment isn’t based on the religious BS of Fischer. Just that the team isn’t going to like crap like this being a part of a player that is already being questioned as a “team” player.
