I was mentioning how much I loved The Newsroom tonight—part of it was their scorn of mob-sourced news stories (they were honing in on the Reddit “investigation” of the Boston bombing.) Breitbrats combine the worst of all aspects of the digital age.

Mexico is undergoing some instability right now. There’s a lot of (justifiable) anger at the government because of all the killings, capped off by the apparent execution of 43 students by a drug cartel in cahoots with a local mayor.

I’m not sure I like the idea of an unstable Mexico on the US southern border, if only because I know we’ll see waves and waves of derp come from the usual suspects if things get weird.

Likes: multitudes of well-built men in skimpy costumes.
Dislikes: very bloody show. Spurting blood. Dismemberments. The effects department even flings buckets of red at the camera lens on a regular basis.
But: multitudes of well-built men in skimpy costumes. Athletic well-built men. Jumping, running, spinning, climbing, sometimes the costumes fall off.

Also a plot, sort of, and characterization, sort of. But the main appeal is the multitudes of athletic, well-built men doing athletic things in skimpy costumes.

There are two kinds of stupidity in the universe:

The first kind is manifested in numerous idiotic articles and web pages which spring up daily, full of inaccuracies to intentionally misleading statements, all which in the end dupe people.

The second level are the armies of dupes who just parrot what the first level writes.

I say this after just checking out an RT article. Why do people comment on RT (or Breitbart, or WND) as if the original articles were worth anything to begin with?

I was a baby then, but yeah, that’s not at all surprising to me. Girls were not allowed to wear slacks or jeans (let alone shorts) to school until I entered middle school. My 6th grade teacher was a man who loved science but was completely annoyed he had girls in his class. He thought I was cheating because I got excellent grades in that subject and paddled me in class over it. My Mom was furious, he nearly lost his job over it. The guy really thought women were not smart enough to grasp science. My Mom told him to explain Marie Curie and maybe it was HE who needed to read some damned books. I didn’t have the best Mom, but she wouldn’t tolerate anyone calling me stupid. But I do remember struggling all through school with the idea that girls just couldn’t do certain things and how we were steered away from some things and into others. You were supposed to be quiet, not get dirty or mess up your hair and take those whistles and even crude remarks as compliments. Some things have changed for the better, others are still being held onto by retrograde throwback doofuses.

Smith recognized completely unregulated commerce would lead to price-fixing and cartels, and eventually conditions that would be unfavorable for the common people. Unlike the glibertarians, Smith knew governments had to play a part in controlling businesses, and in fact encouraged it.

Even Ivy League educated economists have forgotten (or ignored) that aspect of Smith’s philosophy.

Okay, lepertarians, you don’t give your consent for the rest of us to take your money and pay for things. I get it. Fine. You can be exempt from taxation.
However, in the name of equity (a concept you surely understand), we must ask that you identify yourselves in some way, perhaps a tattoo on the forehead, so you can be kept off the public roads. To do otherwise would be theft. You will also need a special insignia on your Mcmansion so the tax supported Fire Department will know to stay off your property and not waste their time (and MY money) putting out any fires. Similarly, if you are targeted by terrorists, you must deal with it on your own somehow. Your AR-15s would be better than nothing, but experience demonstrates that you also need jets, armored vehicles, choppers, and artillery as well as a damn good emergency medical service and lots of sandbags and good digging tools. You might argue that if this were truly a free society you would be allowed to have all these, but you can’t afford them anyway.

There’s a city in eastern China with a barely functional government and banking system, due to bureaucratic lethargy, but a vibrant commercial and financial sector. The businesses took it upon themselves to build roads to their factories and developments, without consulting anyone else. As a result, the roads are laid out in a haphazard way, often ending abruptly for no obvious reason. There are no signs, no traffic signals, no maintenance and no maps. Total FUBAR.

But, hey, it’s all good. The free market in action!

//

In a video that went viral on Facebook and YouTube over the weekend, the unidentified woman recites a series of conspiracy theories about the drink. Specifically, the notion that the “M” in the “Monster” logo is really made up of a Hebrew “6,” repeated three times.

Yes, that would be “666.”

Monster Energy Drinks Promote Satan, Viral Video Claims

“You see these Ms everywhere — hats, T-shirts, bumper stickers. Is there another agenda here?” the woman asks. “If God can use people and product, so can Satan.”

Still have doubts? She has more clues, such as claiming the line through the “o” in “Monster” is really part of a cross, which represents the Antichrist. She says that when someone drinks from a can and tilts it upside-down, the reversed cross represents witchcraft.

“Bottoms up, and the Devil laughs,” she says. “Something to think about.”

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Been on vacation the past week. Visited a couple of interesting spots in Texas - Texas Hill Country, San Antonio and Austin in particular.

Interesting place, and they do a whole lot of things bigger down there. The Texas State Capitol, for one. Pretty damned big (but I’ll take Springfield IL or Albany state capitol buildings for ornateness over the size of the Texas building). Austin definitely has a kickass music scene and the Luminares in San Antonio was a very cool art and music festival.

Texas Hill Country was very cool with Fredericksberg and other small towns. Visited Johnson City and the LBJ Western White House. That was definitely one of the highlights.

We ate quite well to be sure - German food up in Hill Country, and all kinds of cuisine in both Austin and San Antonio.

What doesn’t quite confound me is that Texas still celebrates the civil war as a war of states rights - as witnessed by the memorials on the grounds of the capitol building. Let’s just ignore the fact that it was slavery that was behind the war, shall we?

From the linked Clarion Ledger piece:

The 12-part measure would also establish “Confederate Heritage Month,” which would provide a curriculum base for school children to learn about “Mississippi’s Confederate history, heritage, achievements, and prominent people,” the initiative reads.

I’m guessing that segment covering Confederate achievements will take up at least ten seconds.

Disclosure time:

I am suffering from severe depression, and was self-medicating. Today I got an appointment to see a new psychiatrist, because my other doc wasn’t in network. My GP is hopefully filling out my FMLA paperwork.

I’m not sure where this all turns out, but it’s been horrible.

So, yeah, politics.

Been there, done that. I’m lucky I live in Canada where we have public healthcare, and my disability pays for my drugs. I’d be a dead man otherwise.

So I’m one of those people the anarchists, I mean Libertarians, think doesn’t exist. Some one aided by government.

Sending strength and positive vibes your way. Depression is survivable.

In their mind it just wouldn’t happen, a child sex trade is a product of domination of the powerful over the weak, something that in their fantasy only occurs by entities referred to as governments.

And then they accuse us ‘commies’ for having no understanding of human nature.

Back in the early days of Media Matters they had this little animated skit thing modeled along the lines of Hollywood Squares but with various wingnuts in the “squares” hooting and hollering. Rush was in one of the squares and he yells “feminazi!!!” a few times.

Pretty hilarious, wish I could dig it up again.

It’s why I’m afraid we might see a repeat of 2000 in 2016, with the Dem nominee doing everything possible to put distance between themselves and the President, leaving them trying to explain why the American people should vote for them instead of simply against the party of such an “unpopular” president.

It worked for Al Gore.

Didn’t you know, Chucky is the first with every major breaking news story. If a major media outlet reports on something, they owe him a acknowledgement or else they’re stealing his hard work.
