I like iossarioan’s formulation from downstairs: “X is the Y of Z”.

It’s like Jakov Smirnov’s “Eeen Amerrika, Subject Verbs Object, but in Soviet Russia, Object Verbs Subject!”

It’s important that X, Y, and Z have no relationship to each other.

For example, “Pounds are the millimeters of postage stamps”.

Just want to remind people how important “Obamacare” is———even though single payer would have been better. My 25 year old son is in grad school and has insurance through the university. This last Summer he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. (Fortunately it was caught early and he is doing well….)

But what is great about ACA is that after he graduates and gets a job he will be able to buy insurance without the exorbitant rates for a “previous condition”. He would probably have been essentially uninsurable even though he has had coverage his whole life.

So a big thanks to all the voters who supported democrats to get ACA passed. I just hope the new Congress and SCOTUS don’t dismantle it!

35 Charles Johnson  Nov 10, 2014 11:10:54am

The private sector has done such a great job of innovating the Internet that the US has slower connection speeds at much higher prices than many other countries. Instead of investing in the infrastructure for better service the cable Internet companies are hunkering down and trying to bilk as much money out of their customers as possible, and they’re opposed to net neutrality for the obvious reason that it will prevent them from making mega-deals with larger corporations to guarantee them faster access.

It’s a textbook example of private enterprise out of control and reactionary, and the President’s right, the Internet isn’t just a luxury any more - for many it’s a necessity.

I think most of us know that many consumers will choose “NOTHING” and new free/cheaper services will appear.

Except that the cable companies and telcos own “the last mile” to consumers. A new service would have to either go wireless or pull fiber to their customers. Either way, the startup costs would be huge. Maybe 56K will make a comeback.

I get the feeling too many people here in Hampton Roads have forgotten what it used to be like, when the only game in town was Cox Communications unless you lived towards the outskirts and could get somebody like Charter or Cavalier. They maintained a monopoly for decades by arguing that they owned the coax lines that ran all through the area and thus no competitor could use “their” equipment to compete at a lower cost.

Finally took Verizon investing millions in laying down fiber cable before Cox began to compete on price.

Indeed. Internet access is so ubiquitous to our nation that not having an online presence is treated as an anomaly. I think the average person would be hard-pressed to name a friend who doesn’t have at least an email address. Hell, anybody who’s had to go job-hunting these days knows that there’s no more paper applications out there and companies aren’t going wait on your resume to arrive by snail mail when they’ve got three other applicants who’ve sent over theirs by email.

Or they could provide service by leasing the capacity from telcos or cable companies like Other Common Carriers provided long distance service using ATT facilities back in the day.

I would really like to know and/or understand the cost/pricing structure for providing Internet service (whether it be a telco, cable company, or ISP). Who gets charged what, and how are revenues to the telco’s applied and distributed.

Virtually every local market has been monopolized. There’s no competition.

Once the fiber is laid down, once the initial costs are covered, everything else is profit (minus maintenance, which is required regardless of the form - copper, fiber, cable).

The speeds are easily attainable, but the providers see profit from pushing the prices ever higher for speeds that can be adjusted with a flick of the switch. After all, FiOS just spent all kinds of ad time and money to note that they’re now giving you same upload speeds as download speeds. 50/50, 25/25 etc.

Sure, a few people might need new routers for the highest speeds (like over 100/100), but people getting that service to start will get it as part of their packages.

At least in my area we have TWC, FiOS, and DirectTV operating against each other, but many parts of the country (and even building to building in NYC) are frequently limited to one or another provider exclusively. It’s nuts, and it means that they can play the oligopoly/monopoly game to the hilt (all while claiming that they aren’t in that very situation).

And once those teaser rates end, the providers jack up the costs knowing that they’re going to rake it in thereafter.

When ATM’s first appeared, the banks told everyone it was to “Keeps costs down, and provide you with better service everywhere.” Then it became a pain in the ass, or actually. they just figured they could make money off of it. and now they charge if you do not have an account with them. Limbaugh years ago told people that “It costs money, and who do you think you are expecting “free ATMS.” Yeah. WTF are you?. When UPC’s became the system for grocers, they all pledged that if the price was wrong at the register, they would give it to you free, or even free with your money back. just to gain trust. Not any more. If they give the big corporations the ability to choke off non paying sites and customers on the Net, it would be the end of the net as we know it. Period. I hope all those Democrats who stayed home are happy. And I hope that maybe, just maybe, some Republicans are asking themselves what they did. Who am I kidding? It’s pearls before swine and the pigs are winning.

Don’t know a lot about him, except that he was a frequent guest on the 700 Club and was involved in some, er, controversy:

In March 2014, Munroe was criticized publicly in a press statement by Bahamian Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell for comments he had made about the government’s positions regarding the rights of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals in the LGBT community in the Bahamas. Munroe had stated that Mitchell’s support of LGBT persons in the Bahamas does not “represent the majority of the convictions of the Bahamian people”. Mitchell responded by claiming, “Once again Dr. Myles Munroe has returned to a theme he does not understand and obviously which he has no knowledge.” Mitchell went on in the statement to reference what he regarded as Munroe’s “…absolute stupidity and willful deceit is parading around in the pulpit disguised as theology.”

Yep, another total scam artist.

The Key To Prosperity

A key is a device, usually metal, used to unlock a lock. It allows a person to gain passage to an otherwise prohibited area.

What is the key to prosperity? Like a master locksmith, Dr. Myles Monroe shows us the secret to unlocking true prosperity. You are just minutes away from finding your destiny and experiencing prosperity as God designed it!

For example, because of our purpose, my wife and I need a long dining room table that can seat a large number of people since we often have guests of the ministry to dinner. That’s part of our assignment. It might also be yours, depending on what you are called to do. However, perhaps you need a four-chair table rather than a twelve-chair table because you usually just have your family at dinner.

Give unto the Church, for God made you little people, with insignificant needs compared to the Good Reverend Doctor, who is doing the Lord’s work.

If you pursue the wrong assignment, you’re going to need things you can’t get, because the provision isn’t there unless the vision is yours. It’s someone else’s assignment, and he has his own warehouse.

Sometimes, people make demands on God that He can’t supply because He can’t give us what doesn’t belong to us.

Again, knowing God’s will for your life is the key to your prosperity.

Huh? Why would she do that unless SCOTUS was seriously considering on ruling on this matter in the near future?

UPDATED 5:58 p.m. Justice Sonia Sotomayor has blocked the federal judge’s order, calling for a response by the same-sex couples to be filed by 5 p.m. (Eastern time) on Tuesday. The delay, temporarily preventing issuance of licenses to gay and lesbian couples in Kansas, will remain in effect until there is a further order either by Justice Sotomayor or by the full Court. The Sotomayor order is here.

————-

The state of Kansas, making a strong states’ rights claim, asked the Supreme Court on Monday afternoon to order a delay in same-sex marriages that could occur as early as tomorrow evening, if there is no postponement. The application (14A503) was filed with Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who handles emergency legal matters from the Tenth Circuit’s region, which includes Kansas. She can decide it on her own, or share it with her colleagues.

This marked the first time that the same-sex marriage issue has returned to the Court since a split developed in the federal appeals courts on the power of states to ban such unions. The Kansas application made heavy use of the decision last Thursday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, upholding bans in four states in that circuit. The text of the Sixth Circuit decision was filed along with the application; that will put it before the Justices for the first time, but it is not directly under review at this point; appeals from it are likely to be filed later this week..

Trying to make sense of it, Kansas is basically saying that because the Sixth Circuit ruled in favor of the bans in the states it’s responsible for, the state of Kansas has legal grounds to assert that their own overturned ban is constitutional and is demanding SCOTUS put a hold on marriages until the matter is settled. That sound about right?

Yup. They’re hoping for a split of authority to force the issue to the Supreme Court. It’s the last refuge of the SSM opponents. They want the Supreme Court to rule, and hope that they’d overturn the lower courts that have ruled it unconstitutional thus far.

I imagine they’re hoping they can talk Kennedy into agreeing that this is yet another “states rights” issue or some such BS and thus allowing them to keep the bans in contradiction of the 14th amendment and Windsor.

That 6th Circuit decision was such a joke, I can’t believe anyone relied on it for anything other than to point and laugh, as the dissenting judge in that case did repeatedly in her brilliant dissent.

Curiouser and curiouser…

Well, the ACLU and other human rights and LGBT groups are planning to file (ed: against it), so I imagine this is going to be decided by the full court at some point.

I sat in the same row as Dali at a Segovia concert in 1967 or thereabouts. Dali wore a red-lined black cape, and when Segovia acknowledged him in the audience, he made a huge sweeping bow. I’ll never forget that.

Step in the right direction. Money and time wasted on dragging people in for a baggie of pot could instead be stopping serious crimes.

Poor people have money to spend on drugs? Since when? I expect there is some selling of SNAP benefits somewhere, but if some are committing criminal offenses, charge them. Otherwise, why should ever single person have to undergo something like drug testing?

Probably a sweetheart deal for whoever gets paid for doing all the testing. Win-win.

It was assured of going to the SCOTUS as soon as there was a circuit split, courtesy of the circuit court that covers my state (TN) last week.

Huh? Why would she do that unless SCOTUS was seriously considering on ruling on this matter in the near future?

It’s fallout from earlier last week. Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee are Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Kansas is Tenth Circuit and just trying to make shit up because Tenth Circuit refused a Kansas’ request to delay.
