In Which Right Wing Blogger Chuck C. Johnson Takes Credit for Stopping Ebola

He’s a scientist

Chuck C. Johnson posing with his best friend

Here at LGF I’ve written numerous articles on the dishonest fear-mongering coverage of Ebola by right wing smear merchant Chuck C. Johnson; his record on this has been absolutely abysmal, filled with incompetent factual errors, wildly incorrect predictions, outright lies, smears of doctors and nurses, and stalking and outing private information of suspected Ebola patients.

Today Chuck informed the world via Twitter that he’s actually a hero who stopped the spread of Ebola by inciting panic, because that’s how science works — by making people scared.

It’s science, people!

Yeah it can’t possibly be that the government knew what they were doing. Nope had to be CCJ’s campaign of fear and lies about Ebola. What a sad joke that guy is.

I think his aim is a little higher than that - he wants to be the center of attention. It wouldn’t do for someone else to share his spotlight.

Injecting himself into a story of national import as a sideshow clown. How befitting.

He had absolutely nothing to do with the end to the current batch of Ebola cases. Nothing. Not a single thing. The experts - the ones who were dealing with Ebola patients were the ones who stopped an outbreak from getting worse. There might have been fewer cases, and one more survivor of Ebola, if Dallas Presbyterian did their job instead of sending away Mr. Duncan. If Dallas Presbyterian did their jobs, the two nurses there might not have gotten infected either.

But we’ve seen what modern medical practices can do - they can take a near death sentence for the disease if it occurs in West Africa and turn it into a pretty good chance for a full recovery if the disease is stopped early and treated properly.

CCJ has nothing to do with any of that.

Instead, he spent his time stalking around the dank corners of the Internet trying to dox and get bits of information that are completely unrelated to actually stopping the disease.

No one from Duncan’s apartment complex got Ebola. None. Same with the nurses. Same with Nurse Hickox, who CCJ and Gov. Christie treated worse than a prisoner, even though she had no symptoms that would indicate even the need for further precautions.

CCJ engaged in nothing but fear mongering and spreading misinformation.

Lies and smears. That isn’t how you stop an epidemic of this or any nature.

He didn’t do anyone any good. Except his own inflated sense of self. Which looks good on an award plaque atop a steaming pile of dung.

And has about as much value.

The CDC has reported that they got hundreds of calls, and had to do dozens of tests to clear that people with suspected cases of Ebola were clear.

And that there are no more cases of Ebola in the US is despite CCJ’s best wishes for an outbreak to spread beyond those initial cases. He was angling for 20 cases by October 20. He was gloating that he’d be right. Except he’s so far wrong that it’s silly. 9 cases, including those flown back to the US for treatment. Only two people were infected with the disease on US soil, and both made full recoveries (both were nurses treating Eric Duncan).

All done without need for quarantines like the sort that Gov. Christie imposed (and modified and bloviated upon).

Yes, Ebola’s a dangerous disease - if you live and are surrounded by Ebola victims in places like Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. But it’s a whole lot more survivable here in the US, where modern gear and abundant supplies of gear can protect people from unwittingly getting exposed and sickened.

Moreover, if the disease was nearly as virulent and transmissible as the CCJ’s of the world thought, we’d have a real problem because there’d be a whole lot more cases than there are (both here and in West Africa). We know how the disease spreads, and what to do to stop it.

Listening to CCJ isn’t helpful on either count, unless you want to kill brain cells in the process.

They’re not different from the people who keep on tuning into Beck, Savage, etc who tell them time and time again that Obama’s going to take dictatorial control. And here we are, a week after Obama suffers arguably the worst electoral defeat of his presidency and Obama hasn’t even so much as put out a decree banning opposition parties let alone ordering that Misters Beck, Limbaugh, Savage, etc be arrested as enemies of the state. The people who buy this crap are worse than the purveyors of it since they seem to enjoy being lied to time and time again about how they’re victims of a president who is bloodthirsty.

How NYC disease detectives stop an epidemic from happening. Contact tracing and regular and direct contact with people who may have had contact with those with Ebola (either here as part of treatment of Dr. Spencer or overseas). It’s how to stop Ebola.

I still remember when I was Kingman, AZ trying to track down Tim McVeigh’s buddies in the weeks after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. The rumor spread that Clinton was bringing in 100,000 Chinese shock troops in black helicopters to “liquidate” the locals because Democrats=Commies.

The local supermarkets sold out of bottled water, canned food and ammunition in an afternoon.

I always suspected that it was a savvy supermarket manager wanting to move some inventory behind these rumors.

I am very sparing in the use of the term “racist” or “racism” because a) it is a broad term that covers everything from personal to social/institutional prejudice and b) we cannot have a reasonable discussion of race in this country, much less racism, because of all of the shouting and screaming (and blocking) that ensues whenever the topic is broached.

And the same people who will tell you the Civil, er, um, War Between the States was not about slavery will tell you that the Trayvon Martin or Michael Brown killings were not about race.

No, panic means people act stupidly and go on witch hunts. Which then leads to people not reporting anything due to fear or being, oh, locked up in hospitals and/or ostracized by their community. This is one of many reasons the epidemic in West Africa is still flaring up today.

I don’t care if it’s the same families. Was GHWB’s time comparable to GWB? I’d say hell no. Apart from party, little in common. I find it illustartive of how we use all the wrong criteria. Jeb Smith would poll okay as a long standing governor and republican. Jeb Bush?! Not a freaking chance.

Would Hilary’s admin be like Bills” No, how could it possibly be? The only fair poll would be Hilary Jones Vs Jeb Smith.

Can we go by substance, experience and ethics someday maybe? Holding a guys (or ladies) family against him or her is the same mistaken logic as racism.

Can we go by substance, experience and ethics someday maybe? Holding a guys (or ladies) family against him or her is the same mistaken logic as racism.

Right. Cause it’s not like the family rolodex, the family favor bank, or long-time family staffers are in any way indicative that that the family’s next administration and policies will be much the same as the last.

And the family connection didn’t bring any name ID that in any way shielded the 2.0 version from the sort of scrutiny that John Doe was subject to every step of their career.

It’s amazing how unconvinced he is by the primary documents.

The cornerstone speech is another troll hammer to use on these deluded fools. A few excerpts:

The new Constitution has put at rest forever all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institutions—African slavery as it exists among us—the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution. Jefferson, in his forecast, had anticipated this, as the “rock upon which the old Union would split.” He was right. What was conjecture with him, is now a realized fact. But whether he fully comprehended the great truth upon which that rock stood and stands, may be doubted. The prevailing ideas entertained by him and most of the leading statesmen at the time of the formation of the old Constitution were, that the enslavement of the African was in violation of the laws of nature; that it was wrong in principle, socially, morally and politically. It was an evil they knew not well how to deal with; but the general opinion of the men of that day was, that, somehow or other, in the order of Providence, the institution would be evanescent and pass away… Those ideas, however, were fundamentally wrong. They rested upon the assumption of the equality of races. This was an error. It was a sandy foundation, and the idea of a Government built upon it—when the “storm came and the wind blew, it fell.”

Our new Government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and moral condition.

… look with confidence to the ultimate universal acknowledgement of the truths upon which our system rests? It is the first government ever instituted upon the principles in strict conformity to nature, and the ordination of Providence, in furnishing the materials of human society. Many governments have been founded upon the principle of the subordination and serfdom of certain classes of the same race; such were and are in violation of the laws of nature. Our system commits no such violation of nature’s laws.

The Cornerstone Speech, also known as the Cornerstone Address, was delivered extemporaneously by Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens at the Athenaeum in Savannah, Georgia on March 21, 1861.en.wikipedia.org

Imagine Johnson had a grandson. And had served well as a Senator or Governor. Should Republicans or Democrats old enough to have seen & disliked Johnson hold is against the grandson?

I couldn’t disagree more. An elected president has already built relationships with monied donors and power brokers during his or her campaign. That president will build more of those relationships during his or her term in office. Some of those relationships remain after the president leaves office. Anyone related to that president who chooses to run for office already has a built in advantage over other candidates. That the relationships may come with quid pro quos of their own is another reason that I’m skeptical of dynastic politics. Moreover, the well connected by name candidate will almost certainly diminish the chances that a better though less connected candidate will prevail.

You mentioned Hillary Clinton and she’s a perfect example. She was an undistinguished Senator, ran a laughably bad campaign in ‘08, and then served as an undistinguished Secretary of State. Yet her name is the one most mentioned for 2016. Would she have even been elected to the Senate or appointed to the cabinet if her last name wasn’t Clinton? I doubt it. Are their other electable Democrats who might better serve the ends of the Democratic party? Possibly, though we may never know for the reasons I mentioned above.

Texas Lawmaker Wants Constitutional ‘License To Discriminate’ Against LGBT Workers And Customers

thinkprogress.org

“Texas businesses would be allowed to fire LGBT employees and turn away LGBT customers under a new proposal issued Monday by state Sen. Donna Campbell (R).

“Campbell’s proposal would strengthen existing protections in Texas for the “right to act or refuse to act in a manner motivated by a sincerely held religious belief,” a legal maneuver that critics have described as a “license to discriminate.” This year, many state legislatures have considered putting the religious rights of business owners over the civil rights of would-be customers. Similar proposals in Kansas, North Carolina, South Dakota, Arizona, and Oregon ultimately failed this year, while a number of other states have held that the law protects LGBT folks from discrimination even if that discrimination is based in scripture.”

Perfect example of how CCJ’s version of “award winning journalism” is to make shit up.
The news article in the link doesn’t say the driver is an illegal alien. But he has a suspicious brown name and UpChuck’s “sourcing” is “it’s all the talk of the town” in Fresno. (Apparently he can hear “all the talk” in Fresno while he’s in Floriduh…)

[Embedded content]

The guy recently moved from Washington state. Visaliatimesdelta storyThat’s not exactly diagnostic of “illegal immigrant”.

For that matter, many illegal immigrants are wary of encounters with law enforcement and go to considerable lengths to stay out of any little bit of trouble. They may commute to work by bicycle, for instance, and if they must ride at night, even a rust bucket of a squeaky bike will have front and rear blinking lights, in working order.

Upshot: whether the driver in this story is an illegal alien is way up in the air, but the evidence available on casual search, together with common sense, suggest that he probably is not.

The “states’ rights” policies in the Confederate Consitution specifically *denied* any state to alter or limit or impede in any way anybody’s rights to slaves. A state could not later pass leglsation that slaves had to be fed, or the slaveholder had to be of a certain age, or that slaves couldn’t be skinned alive for sport, or any other “limitation” at all. That they should be registered or require background checks. That they should be certified as having been born within the CSA and not kidnapped freemen from Pennsylvania. Any limits. At all. Would be unconstitutional under the confederacy’s constitution.

Because they’re so serious about states’ rights.

One couldn’t write a newspaper article opposing slavery, because slave-owners’ rights to own slaves couldn’t be subject to criticism, they didn’t have a 1st amendment. You couldn’t write a letter to a friend suggesting it might be good to treat slaves at least as well as you treat your livestock, since your free speech rights to say that and your privacy rights not to have your mail read are subordinate to the slave-owners’ rights to not be criticized.

But it’s not about slavery. It’s about individual rights and states’ rights and freedom.

And some states did gradual emancipation - whereas current slaves remained slaves, but none were born as slaves. New Jersey abolished slavery in 1804, but still had some slaves in 1865 for instance.

(Additional note: New Jersey abolished slavery officially for all in 1846, but qualified it by defining some of the “freed” former slaves as “apprentices for life”. Distinction without a difference.)

It is! It was about the rights and freedoms of certain individuals, and the state’s right to preserve and extend those rights. It’s just by chance that all those rights and freedoms had to do with those individual owning other individuals and stealing their labor.

So, you see, it wasn’t about slavery at all! It was about freedom and state rights!

An Irish-born priest, found guilty last month of sexually abusing a child in his care at a religious school in Santiago, will avoid jail time under a sentence handed down on Tuesday.

A judge sentenced John O’Reilly, who moved to Chile from Ireland in 1985, to four years and a day of “supervised liberty” for abusing the pre-teen girl at the private Colegio Cumbres in the affluent neighbourhood of Las Condes between 2007 and 2009.

O’Reilly, who over the years befriended many powerful conservative businessmen and politicians in Chile, will not be confined at home nor be required to periodically check in with a parole officer. He will be free to travel out of the country.

I get amusement out of future generations being told about how cameras used to need “film” to take pictures, that film took hours to days to develop unless you had an instant camera, that they didn’t have touchscreens allowing you to fiddle with the picture, and opening them before the film was used up could ruin the whole roll.

Hey Charles,
The android app for using a cell phone to make charges to a credit card account changed its name from “Isis Wallet” to “SoftCard,” for obvious reasons.

Have you thought about whether Chuck C. Johnson has reached the point where that approach might be worth considering?

And when you needed a different ASA/ISO right now, you had to check what frame you were currently on, rewind the film but leave the leader out!!!, open the back and remove the film, put in the new film, wind the leader around the take up spool, close the back, manually set the new ISO (I know, this is really going back in time), then fire away.

Simple.

Report: Islamic State handlers lured Colorado girls, recruited others

denverpost.com

“Three Arapahoe County girls stopped on their way to join the Islamic State interacted through Twitter with high-level militant recruiters who had already lured several Westerners to Syria, according to a new report from an international terror monitoring group.

“The Westerners included a 33-year-old Minnesota man believed to be the first American killed fighting for the Islamic State.

“The Search for International Terrorist Entities Intelligence Group, also known as SITE, said Tuesday it also found the teen-agers were sharing militant recruitment videos. Those included a lecture by Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-turned-al-Qaida-leader killed in a 2011 U.S. drone strike in Yemen.” More

Or, know time temp & developer to push/pull process the given emulsion and do change the settings on the fly. I preferred a developer called Diafine because it was extremely flexible in this regard. This was for B&W only - color was always much fussier but after awhile you could know which ones could stand a stop or two of pushing or pulling.

Plus-X, 400ISO & Diafine remains the finest combination I ever used. Wish I could make the results of my Oly digital look that good but digital still doesn’t have quite the latitude to pull that off. Soon enough though.

also don’t forget to stick a piece of tape on the old spool, with what frame you were on, so you could advance past that point when you put it back in. (and a couple extra frames just for safety sake).

And you BETTER remember to reset the ISO, when you put that 1/2 spool back in, unless you want to start shooting that 64 ‘chrome at the 1600 you just pulled out. Yea, I remember that. And pre-TTL metering on the flash with “auto” mode. (actually my underwater flash works on either manual or auto mode, no TTL, I’ve just never taken it underwater, I have to spend a day or so learning that camera and how to operate it in the waterproof housing)

And lets not forget that horrible feeling of going to rewind the film after shooting a full 36 shots, and having it be done in 2 turns of the knob, because the stupid leader slipped off the takeup spool when you first put it in, and you never bothered to check if the thing was actually pulling film.

re: #155 Blind Frog Belly White

He’s trying to change the argument from whether the Southern States went to war to PRESERVE slavery, to whether the Union went to war to END slavery.

His last response is about setting up the pivot.

The South went to war to preserve its perceived right to extend slavery to new territories. Lincoln, after all, had campaigned on a platform of stopping merely that expansion.

Slavery and cotton and tobacco were the economic equivalent of an army ant march. Devour everything in front of you and keep going until…what? There can never be enough land to sustain a cultivation model that relies on raping both the land and the women who bear the field workers.

With this as its basic model, the South fell into one ruinous grand strategic or military strategic pitfall after another. Firing on Fort Sumter. Invading Kentucky. Invading New Mexico. Attacking, attacking, attacking. [Malvern Hill, Shiloh, Antietam.] By the time a little strategic wisdom began to percolate, the chance to run out the clock on Union patience had withered.

Damn fool’s errand from start to finish. Happily for the nation as a whole, and the future of the world, the political leadership of the South, and basic mindset of most of its officers, was incompatible with shrewd conduct of the war. They should have [purely in the sense of playing the game right] just defended, and aimed at reaching a peace in which the Confederate States existed, and forgotten dreams of more and bigger.

It only took 170 or so years for that official admission to come out. It certainly was never taught in official Mormon church manuals, although some people may have known about it because they read certain biographies.

What ticks me off about this is how the essay obfuscates how one of the wives was a 14 year old girl (Helen Mar Kimball) “who was sealed to Joseph several months before her 15th birthday.” Most people would call that “fourteen.” Here’s the other women he married before their 20th birthdays:

1. Fanny Alger (16)
2. Sarah Ann Whitney (17)
3. Flora Ann Woodworth (16)
4. Emily Dow Partridge (19, Smith also married her sister)
5. Lucy Walker (17)
6. Sarah Lawrence (17, Smith also married her sister)
7. Maria Lawrence (19)
8. Nancy Winchester (14)
9. Melissa Lott (19)

re: #297 dholmes32

Keep in mind that when most of this marrying was going on, Smith was between 35 and 38.

Oh, and the list doesn’t include the wives of other men that Smith married as well.

I suspect these days Smith would be sharing prison space with another guy who really liked the young ones—that would be Warren Jeffs.

(FTR, former Mormon here. I resigned over Prop 8.)

I wonder what Pamela Geller would think of a presidential candidate who followed that prophet…

The word that was used generally to describe a preference for mid- to late teenagers is Ephebophilia. It’s not used anymore since society generally accepts a wide difference in ages, as long as the age of consent is met.

Fourteen is below the age of consent today—as Warren Jeffs very much knows now.

In any case, one has to question whether the young women weren’t coerced into marriage. Helen Mar Kimball says she married Smith to ensure her family’s place in the highest heaven. That kind of pressure doesn’t scream “free and willing consent” to me.

The whole thing is skeevy.

What might be your best argument that putting policy/ethics/ability to lead further down the criteria than family ties helps get a better President?

I haven’t seen an awful lot of evidence that the people being touted are being touted because they have good policy/ethics/ability to lead.

What they have is name recognition, which is worth a lot when it comes to getting elected but actually isn’t nearly as important when you are talking about criteria for being a good elected official.

I considered and voted against Hillary in the 2008 primary because I decided I liked Obama better as a candidate, based on those policies, etc. I’ll vote for her this time around if it means keeping the (current) Republican policies out of the WH. I absolutely won’t vote for Bush (or any other Republican) for the same reason.

I think it’s kind of disingenuous to pretend that these folks who just happen to be related to previous presidents represent the absolute best either party has to offer in terms of candidates and we should pretend that they’re not being seriously considered based in part on the name recognition they bring to the table.

Hillary’s rolodex, the donors and bundlers and local campaign staff beholden to her husband for what he did for them in the past, or what his foundation may do for them in the future… sucks all the air out of the room. Nobody else will have any chance to compete on policy or experience or capacity to lead.

We’re not saying “downgrade her because of what we think of her next-of-kin”, we’re saying “there’s not anything even vaguely resembling a fair comparison between her and other potential candidates… because of her next of kin.”

It’s feudal, is what it is.

I’m fed up with running folks just because they have good name recognition, I’m fed up with the fact that we have an electorate that is stupid enough to elect based on that, I’m fed up with a lot of shit.

But seriously, we have not had a Republican president not named Bush since I was 3 years old. There are Lizards who have never had a Republican not named Bush as President. I can’t imagine why people might be irritated by the concept of another one where we have exactly zero evidence to suggest that he will govern radically differently policy-wise than his father/brother. Do you have some to put forward?

Some 83% of voters who self-identified as “very conservative” were concerned about the possibility of ISPs having the power to “influence content” online. Only 17% reported being unconcerned. Similarly, 83% of self-identified conservatives thought that Congress should take action to ensure that cable companies do not “monopolize the Internet” or “reduce the inherent equality of the Internet” by charging some content companies for speedier access.

The Democratic party doesn’t anoint people, but you do have to choose from the people running, which a lot of voters don’t seem to realize occurs in the midterms as well.

Hillary Clinton is basically an establishment Democrat.

Jeb Bush is basically an establishment Republican.

For both of them, they have unearned connections that would be valuable for mounting a POTUS campaign.

I fail to see what is so strange about evaluating this evidence according to one’s views of establishment Democrats, establishment Republicans, or the merit (or lack thereof) of trading on one’s rolodex. The feudalism point made upthread is on-target, IMO.

It’s not surprising that Boehner, a man who is one is the top figures in a political party that has become masters in convincing a very large segment of this nation’s populace to vote for them and to vote against their own self-interests (over and over and over again), is protecting his self-interests over those of his constituents and the American public at-large.

About Orion:

nasa.gov

NASA’s Orion spacecraft is built to take humans farther than they’ve ever gone before. Orion will serve as the exploration vehicle that will carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during the space travel, and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities.

On December 4, 2014, Orion will launch atop a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s Space Launch Complex Flight Test on the Orion Flight Test: a two-orbit, four-hour flight that will test many of the systems most critical to safety.

The Orion Flight Test will evaluate launch and high speed re-entry systems such as avionics, attitude control, parachutes and the heat shield. In the future, Orion will launch on NASA’s new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System. More powerful than any rocket ever built, SLS will be capable of sending humans to deep space destinations such as an asteroid and eventually Mars. Exploration Mission-1 will be the first mission to integrate Orion and the Space Launch System.

HURR HURR BECAUSE GODWINS ARE TEH LAME!!!!!!

Honestly, I would propose a corollary to Godwin’s Law: In any political discussion, the probability of Stalin being mentioned is directly proportional to the probability of Hitler being mentioned.

A Stalin amendment to the law.

And if the answer is multiple choice, they’d better let me check “neither”.

re: #342 klystron

I’m fed up with running folks just because they have good name recognition, I’m fed up with the fact that we have an electorate that is stupid enough to elect based on that, I’m fed up with a lot of shit.

But seriously, we have not had a Republican president not named Bush since I was 3 years old. There are Lizards who have never had a Republican not named Bush as President. I can’t imagine why people might be irritated by the concept of another one where we have exactly zero evidence to suggest that he will govern radically differently policy-wise than his father/brother. Do you have some to put forward?

There’s been a Bush or Clinton on the ticket every year since 1980. There could be voters whose *grandparents* have never been able to cast a presidential ballot that didn’t have a Bush or Clinton on it.

If 2016 has a ballot with both a Bush and Clinton, that does not speak well of our “meritocracy” and bootstrapping and social mobility. As I said… feudal.

It’s not like we’ve never had this before. The Adams, Roosevelts, Kennedy’s.

I bet the number of Republicans arguing that having another Bush would be a bad thing is pretty close to zero.

This guy claims to have a “hot wife”, if memory serves.

Is there any evidence of this? Because based on his internet persona, I see no evidence of a female presence in this man’s life whatsoever.

Yes, her photo has been posted here before.

In general, a lot of us try to leave her out of it because she’s not done anything beyond having the bad taste to marry someone like Upchuck.

Of course. My first suspicion was that he’s lying, since he spends so much time mouthing off on the internet like an angry self-loathing 20-year-old virgin.

(Hopefully he leaves the ranting idiocy out of his domestic life, for her sake.)

It is worth taking most of what he says with multiple grains of thought, I agree. :) But no, she does exist and I hope for her as well that he is somewhat saner in real life.

I doubt it though.
