US and China Announce Historic Agreement on Climate Change

Some excellent news from President Obama’s trip to China: BREAKING: The US and China Just Announced a Huge Deal on Climate—and It’s a Game Changer.

So much for the conventional wisdom that China will never agree to reduce carbon emissions. Two of the world’s major carbon-producing countries have made an historic deal, and of course we can fully expect the Republican Party to freak right out over it.

According to the plan, the United States will reduce carbon emissions 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025, nearly twice the existing target—without imposing new restrictions on power plants or vehicles.

Tuesday’s announcement is equally remarkable for China’s commitment. For the first time, China has set a date at which it expects its emissions will “peak,” or finally begin to taper downward: around 2030. China is currently the world’s biggest emitter of carbon pollution, largely because of its coal-dependent economy, and reining in emissions while continuing to grow has been the paramount challenge for China’s leaders.

The White House said in a statement that China could reach the target even sooner than 2030. It “expects that China will succeed in peaking its emissions before 2030 based on its broad economic reform program, plans to address air pollution, and implementation of President Xi’s call for an energy revolution.”

Seriously though, the GOP is disconnected from reality when it comes to anything science-based, including climatology and the environment. Well, now there’s a bilateral deal and it’s a workable one for both the US, China, and the rest of the world.

re: #17 Vicious Piebola

Of course, these nitwits ignore that the President said that the US is already on course to meet those goals without any additional effort - based on the EPA regs to reduce emissions by 30% from the 2005 levels by 2030. That’s not as tough as it sounds, as the shift to low/no emission energy sources is accelerating and the recession meant more companies began emphasizing efficiencies.

The GOP, on the other hand, is rearing its ugly anti-science head to roll back the EPA regulations (making the air dirtier and making the US less efficient in the long run).

But as we mentioned yesterday, next year’s GOP-controlled Congress will seek to undermine those EPA rules. As the New York Times adds, “While the agreement with China needs no congressional ratification, lawmakers could try to roll back Mr. Obama’s initiatives, undermining the United States’ ability to meet the new reduction targets.”

It’s amorality and anti-Obama derangement. Anything Obama does must be opposed, even if it’s the right thing to do and is critical to US long term safety (like stopping a deadly outbreak at its source so that no new cases can occur here).

So, after claiming Obama wasn’t doing enough - and wasn’t shutting our borders, they’re now complaining that we’ve sent more than we should.

Never mind that the WHO has already indicated that their target goals for getting new health care teams, burial details, and financial commitments is still well short of what’s needed to stop the epidemic.

CJ Werleman comes out against “New Atheism”

I had embraced “New Atheism.” In fact, I even described myself as an anti-theist. If you’re still unclear what “new atheism” is - it is everything espoused by the likes of Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, and anyone else associated with what is loosely called the “atheist movement.” The new atheists have moved atheism from being merely a non-positive assertion to an ideology that positively wants to eradicate religion or at least shrink it to the size it can drown in a bathtub, to borrow a conservatism-ism. To put it even more simply, Atheism = there are no gods. New Atheism = there are no gods and religion is the root of all evil and must be eradicated.

Today, I am no longer a new atheist or an anti-theist. I have returned to who I was from the date of my birth in 1973 to the day of the Bali bomb in 2005: an old fashioned, vanilla atheist.

The world is far more complex than slogans and bumper stickers. “Religion poisons everything,” “religion is a virus,” “religion is the reason they hate us,” and “religion is the root of all evil,” are nothing more than the slogans of a cultural, political, and historical illiterate.

88 Kragar  Nov 12, 2014 1:38:29pm
Ultimately, I have come to accept life is hard. I have also come to accept religion is a force for good for those who have nothing else to cling onto. It provides hope for those who otherwise have reason to believe all hope is lost. So who am I to belittle that?

I will continue to fight vigorously for secularism, but I will no longer fight to eradicate or take away someone’s religious belief. To attempt so would be a fools errand, and one that history has proven leads to terrifying outcomes.

There are tons of formats. Without getting into word soup, the average video file is usually 1 compressed video stream and 1 compressed audio stream stuck in a container file. mov is a container, for instance, not a type of video. It probably has quicktime video in it, but it could have something else.

I don’t have much in the way of info sources to point you to - I just picked up stuff over the years. For all our want for good news, on the topic of climate change (and not only on the topic of climate change) our society’s means of information exchange, what we’ll loosely term “the media”, has failed, and continues to fail.

I am very cynical about this topic (about as cynical as I am whether the Southern Baptist convention will come out and say “Darwin was right.”)

Take for example this WaPo piece, which on the face of it might seem important:
Keystone XL is now a rallying point to save Mary Landrieu’s career

The whole thing is sort of the triple-backwards-summersault of fail.

I don’t have time to rant at length about it, but think about not only the topic but how the author frames his discussion in the first paragraph:

The reason you have heard of the Keystone XL pipeline is because of the environmental movement. Several years ago, 350.org and other groups seized upon the project, which would shunt a form of oil from Alberta to the Gulf Coast, as a symbol of the sort of thing the country should avoid if it wants to curb climate change.

Recall, the story about the old man that murdered the guy for texting in a Tampa area movie theater….well, an interesting development in that story: Report: No evidence theater shooting victim texting about daughter

WESLEY CHAPEL — Chad Oulson, who was shot and killed at a movie theater in January, may not have been texting to check on his sick daughter.

Pasco sheriff’s investigators could not find any evidence on Oulson’s phone that he was communicating with anyone about his daughter before retired Tampa police Capt. Curtis Reeves Jr. shot and killed him at the Cobb Grove 16 Theater, according to a report filed by the sheriff’s Cyber Crimes unit.

Reeves, 72, is charged with second-degree murder and aggravated battery. He has been out on bail since July 11. The trial is scheduled for March.

He confronted Oulson, 43, over his texting during the previews to the film, “Lone Survivor.” Oulson and his wife, Nicole, were seated directly in front of Reeves and his wife. Several witnesses said they heard Oulson say he was texting his 3-year-old daughter, and investigators assumed he meant his child’s babysitter.

More on the guy who is treating Glenn Beck’s latest ailment.

Beck… has now been diagnosed as “adrenal fatigue” by maverick “chiropractic neurologist” Dr. Ted Carrick.

(Not sure what “Dr. Ted’s” doctorate is in—some have said it’s in education.)

“Chiropractic neurology” is a controversial branch of medicine that Yale University neurologist Dr. Steven Novella dismissed outright as “pure pseudoscience” in a column from November of 2011.

“Chiropractic neurology does not appear to be based on any body of research, or any accumulated scientific knowledge,” Novella wrote. “I am not aware of any research that establishes their core claims. A search on PubMed for ‘Carrick T’ yielded nothing, and searching on ‘chiropractic neurology’ yielded mostly studies about neurological complications from chiropractic treatment.”

ORDER IN PENDING CASE
14A503 MOSER, ROBERT, ET AL. V. MARIE, KAIL, ET AL.
The application for stay presented to Justice Sotomayor and
by her referred to the Court is denied. The order heretofore
entered by Justice Sotomayor is vacated.
Justice Scalia and Justice Thomas would grant the
application for stay.

This looks pretty bad for opponents of SSM. If Alito, Roberts or Kennedy had any mind to affirm the Sixth Circuit ruling they probably would have also supported a continued stay in Kansas as well. Instead Scalia and Thomas are out there alone as the only Justices willing to go on record as opposed to ending the stay. I have a very hard time thinking that Roberts and Kennedy especially would have allowed so many marriages to go forward in States that enacted specific bans against SSM, and to ignore every Circuit Appeals ruling against those bans, only to much later rule in favor of the Sixth Circuit’s fucked up reasoning that such bans are okay.

Roberts, while pretty steadily conservative, is especially invested in the reputation of his Court for consistency and reliability. Probably the last thing he wants as his legacy is the idea that he needlessly played games with people’s lives. He almost certainly will not yank the rug out from under families who were granted legal marriages by the deliberate and explicit inaction of his Court. And he cannot uphold the Sixth Circuit ruling without creating two classes of same sex couples, those who married before the Supreme Court chose to get involved, and those who didn’t.

Well, there you go.

US crude futures settle at $77.18, lowest since October 2011

Right now: 76.98 USD

Opinion: Oil prices, not Obama’s veto, may block Keystone

A report out this week from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries cut that group’s forecast for global demand and prices over the next five years, pushing U.S. oil prices CLZ4, -1.33% down closer to $75 a barrel and international benchmark Brent Crude LCOZ4, -2.13% to near $80, a drop of more than $30 from its 52-week high.

Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia, the biggest OPEC producer, cuts its oil prices to U.S. customers, signaling it was ready to let prices decline in order to preserve market share.

But the Canadian Energy Research Institute estimates that oil-sands projects need a price of $85 a barrel to be profitable in the current cheapest (in situ) method and new standalone mines will require $105 a barrel to make a reasonable return.

Something that has been known for a while. How are they going to get the prices up? Especially if we keep pushing for cleaner energy. There is a lot of money to be lost for some corporations people. Wonder what lies lengths they would go to to protect their billions in profit.

re: #174 Islamo-Masonic Vourdalak

Thanks. Another question: why does the official doc contains info about the irrelevant opinions of two other justices?

Because Sotomayor referred the issue of continuing the stay to the entire Court. If a minimum (I think 4) Justices had supported taking the case and/or continuing the stay it would have remained in effect until the Supreme Court heard either that case or a related one and issued their own ruling on the matter.

IOW it’s a very, very bad sign for the social conservatives that they only got two Justices willing to prevent marriage from proceeding in the interim. Because the Court is especially wary of creating harm through its own inaction, which is what happens now if they undo marriages they tacitly agreed to allow. And if they just try to close the door next year, by disallowing future marriages without dissolving those marriages already performed they will in effect create a 14th Amendment equal protection violation.

Roberts and Kennedy have effectively broadcast how they are going to rule. Alito is just dumb enough to still rule against SSM, but his vote is irrelevant at this point.

Let’s not forget that the South Carolina ban got overturned today as well.

COLUMBIA Federal Judge Richard Gergel of Charleston overturned state law and ruled Wednesday that couples of the same sex have a right under the U.S. Constitution to marry in South Carolina.

Gergel’s decision is the first ruling in a South Carolina federal court that clearly states that state government has no compelling interest - nor does it have a right - to dictate to citizens who they can and cannot marry.

209 goddamnedfrank  Nov 12, 2014 3:36:05pm

It’s also worth mentioning that the State bans against SSM are on a much weaker legal footing than the federal DOMA law was, because the 14th Amendment doesn’t actually apply to the federal government at all. One of the reasons that Windsor v. US was a 5-4 decision was that it rested on 5th Amendment grounds, wherein “equal protection” was inferred into the due process clause via Bolling v. Sharpe.

Conservatives of course don’t really like this, because the 5th Amendment doesn’t actually explicitly say a damned thing about equal protection of the laws. Retconning this kind of meaning, no matter how much sense it makes in the modern world, is the kind of “judicial activism” they hate.

However the Equal Protection Clause in 14AS1 is totally explicit, it’s right there unambiguously in the text itself. It clearly mentions “any person,” and very specifically applies to the individual States. The fact that the Court went about the whole thing rather backwards, making the objectively greater stretch of okaying federal ssm rights before making the legally much easier case of applying them to the States is kind of a weird quirk, and will end up being an historical footnote.

In the ruling against South Carolina (which has a temporary stay until November 20), the judge, Gergel also appeared to scold Wilson and Haley, saying that the 4th Circuit ruling was the “controlling authority” and that that is a well-known legal principle. Gergel also wrote that Wilson, specifically, misunderstood or misapplied numerous matters of apparently settled law in seeking to deny a Charleston couple the right to be issued a marriage license.

and
In his decision, Gergel specifically overturned an anti-same sex marriage amendment to the S.C. Constitution passed by a huge majority of South Carolinians in 2006. That amendment passed by a 78-22 percent majority in a referendum.

(We grow ‘em smart here in SC.)

Of course, Wilson is citing the 6th Circuit’s idiotic ruling in his appeal.

Of course Bolling v. Sharpe came before Brown v. Board of Ed. So there’s some precedent for the Court coming to the legally more difficult conclusion and applying civil rights protections federally before tackling the legally much simpler task of applying them to the States.

McConnell attributed the Democrats’ change of heart to the election.

Holy Crap that happened here in Milwaukee last night.

Truck driver fined for crashing semi through Lake Park, footbridges

A lost Indiana semitrailer truck driver who drove his rig onto a pedestrian bridge at Milwaukee’s historic Lake Park has been fined $579.80 for reckless driving and failure to obey signs, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Authorities are not yet naming the 50-year-old driver, saying they first want to determine if medical issues were a factor. He is from Whiteland, Ind., and drives for the Kentucky-based Paschall Truck Lines.

According to the sheriff’s office, the man drove his truck, with its 53-foot trailer, onto the walkway about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, damaging several trees, two pedestrian bridges and the adjacent concrete railings. The truck came to a stop on the peninsula behind the Lake Park lighthouse.

The driver told authorities that he had been following directions from his GPS. He was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.

That is why I refuse to use GPS. I used to see this regularly when driving big trucks. Heck, GPS directions to the hotel I work at will take you to the opposite side of town.

A map, when necessary a compass, and a working brain will get you where you’re going faster and safer.

I use Google Maps and write down the step-by-step directions. Then, at the least, I can add notes to be able to tell myself when I’m lost, and how to get back on track.

Every single time someone comes to visit us here in the backwoods, their GPS insists on taking them to the very top of farm, via backroads.
The house is way down in the bottom of the holler.
The top of the farm and the house are located on two completely different roads, with no connecting road between them (other than a very old logging road that appears on no map anywhere).

…which she’s got next to no chance of winning under any circumstance. So what on earth is this vote supposed to accomplish, other than kowtowing to the kochs? (at least GOPers are loud and obnoxious and blatant about serving their true masters. Turncoat dems do it through acquiescence and backstabbing the president, which somehow seems more repellant in comparison)

Bill De Blasio was just on Chris Hayes and he was really good. (paraphrase) If you’re going to promote a progressive agenda, stick to it—people want consistency and you have to deliver.

The last time I was in Kansas City, they had a detour from the airport that just kind of ended, with no further signage, in the middle of downtown. I was just really glad I knew the city well enough to figure out how to get where I was going or I’d have been SOL.

See, looking at it on Google Maps, I could see that the house is nowhere near the “address” and compensate. There’s something to be said for putting actual thought into planning your trip, instead of just relying on an electronic gadget to do your thinking for you.

(Reuters) - Legislation to approve the Keystone XL pipeline cleared a procedural hurdle in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, setting up a vote on the project next week.

Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu, who faces a runoff vote in Louisiana on Dec. 6, had pushed for vote on Thursday on the bill.

Her Republican opponent, U.S. Representative Bill Cassidy, pushed for a vote on a similar bill his chamber, as each competed to support TransCanada Corp’s pipeline that would send some 800,000 barrels per day of Canadian oil sand petroleum to refineries in Texas.

My father-in-law, who has been here many many times and knows the actual route to get here, always insists on using his GPS, which takes him TO THE TOP OF THE FARM.
Then he has to drive about 10-15 miles (which takes at least 30 minutes) to actually get here from there.

The long wait for a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline grew even longer Friday, when the U.S. State Department announced it would allow more time for eight federal agencies to submit their views on the proposed project.

Update on my sister:
Her bypass surgery went well yesterday, but she had some complications last night: one of the grafts started to leak so they had to go back in to fix it; her right ventricle was having a hard time, so they kept her on the heart pump (or whatever it is); and there’s some impaired circulation in one of her legs where a vein was harvested for one of the grafts.
OTOH, she’s awake and talking. Lots of pain when she breathes (not surprising), but she can laugh about it (but not too loudly).

If you can stand to listening to YET ANOTHER version of Let It Go, this guy does it in the voices of a wide range of Disney characters and it’s pretty damn awesome.

I think I asked this the other day, and I didn’t get an answer. I only ask for my own education and political entertainment.

Has anyone seen anything in any media from Debbie Wasserman Schultz?

Since there is a lot of commenting around here about the election fallout and the Dems scurrying about looking for a place at the trough I am amazed I haven’t seen one word about her. Of course I may have missed it.

Do you all think she will/should keep her job as Chair of the Democratic National Committee?

She seems to have become transparent. If she is around, she sure blends in and can’t be seen.

I’ll take that as good news. It really is amazing what medical science can do and it sounds like she is somewhere where they are watching her closely and paying attention, you can’t ask for more than that. Continued good vibes being sent her way and congratulations on your test results too.

re: #352 Backwoods_Sleuth

Update on my sister:
Her bypass surgery went well yesterday, but she had some complications last night: one of the grafts started to leak so they had to go back in to fix it; her right ventricle was having a hard time, so they kept her on the heart pump (or whatever it is); and there’s some impaired circulation in one of her legs where a vein was harvested for one of the grafts.
OTOH, she’s awake and talking. Lots of pain when she breathes (not surprising), but she can laugh about it (but not too loudly).

Also, this morning, I got the results of my annual boob smash: results were normal (which may be the only “normal” thing about me…)

Wishing you both good health.

This is an interesting question. I think the removal of Dean as DNC chair was a big mistake, and see no evidence that present DNC leadership is good for much of anything.

There has to be someone else who wants the job. I would wager that with a Clinton run there would be a bunch of people who would like that post but I think she basically serves at the pleasure of the leader of the party (Obama) due to the committee assignments? It will probably go to an old insider who hasn’t alienated both Obama and Clinton, if that person exists.

re: #354 William Barnett-Lewis

There are only 4 web comics I follow regularly. In order of coolness, to me at least (though the division is exceedingly fine):
1) xkcd.com
2) schlockmercenary.com
3) questionablecontent.net
4) freefall.purrsia.com

You may notice a strong science/geek/sf tinge here… ;) Even QC has strong sf elements mixed in with it’s slice of life story line.

Awesome. I don’t have kids, if I did I’d prob be a tiger mom. With comics. There’s just so much more great info available now, kids just need to see it.

I kinda get on a high horse about my friends and their child raising. (quietly, I never say anything) No discovery, no reaching for knowledge. Just soccer and tae kwon do. The parent’s never did much discovery, so their kids will probably follow. :(

re: #358 teleskiguy

You could draw a line from OK to WI and end up in four states which form the spectrum:

Republican — Conservative — Democratic — Liberal

Which sort of reflects the giant political shift of my lifetime, which the GOP now more reactionary than conservative and the self-aware progressives much more liberal than the Democratic party machinery.

They took her off the heart pump a couple of hours ago.
The graft that was leaking wasn’t cauterized completely the first time.
I’ve heard that bypass surgeries for women can be problematic because the graft veins are smaller on average then men’s are.
She’s at an excellent hospital, however, and she has great faith in her surgeon’s abilities.
She’s also a nurse, which kind of makes her a cranky patient. :D

I agree about Dean. Sure he can wig out from time to time, but policy wise he usually is very practical from a realistic liberal political point. I think he has gotten sharper too since he had his own election run failings.

Hmmm. Maybe he will run again. People are asking for someone different than Hillary.

/// Only about running again.

I already changed my tires from summer sport to winter snow today. Usually I have waited for Thanksgiving weekend. I have a funny feeling that wasn’t going to cut it this year. Everyone stay comfortable in your climes.
