Here’s one of those jaw-dropping political statements that sends your mind into vapor lock for a few seconds as you try in vain to comprehend the bizarre illogic that could drive someone like Rick Santorum to such an absurd inverted reality conclusion: Rick Santorum Wishes Obama Would Be a Racial Uniter Like Segregationists Jerry Falwell and Jesse Helms.

Ladies and gentlemen, second place in the 2012 GOP primaries for president. Really this is the GOP folks, this is a former GOP presidential candidate telling America’s first black president that he needs to be more like Josse Helms and Jerry Falwell. Jesse Helms who made his political career by being an even bigger racist than Strom Thurmond. And Jerry Falwell who of course had no problem with Apartheid.

So apparently “racial uniter” = tell the blah people what their role is?

6 lawhawk  Nov 18, 2014 11:07:41am

So, does this make Santorum the presumptive leader in 2016? Given the bad crazy emanating from the right, it definitely stands out for being batcrap crazy insane. It’s an edge he’ll definitely take advantage of. Just you wait.

7 HappyWarrior  Nov 18, 2014 11:07:42am

Jesse Helms who was a total dick to a mother of a teenaged AIDS victim.
Jesse Helms who called the University of North Carolina the University of Negros and Communists.
Jesse Helms who upon the first election of an African woman to the Senate bragged about he would make her cry by whistling “Dixie” to her.
Great role model you got there Rick, an unabashed racist who would have fit in great in the 1860’s and Jerry Falwell who hated gay people more than he loved his fellow man.

From wiki, here’s Santorum’s great racial uniter- Jesse Helms: What a swell guy. And to remind people furthermore about how long lasting this toxic racist was around, he was in the Senate as recently as 2002.
Helms opposed busing, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. He once referred to the University of North Carolina (UNC) as the “University of Negroes and Communists”.[260][261][262][263] Helms called the Civil Rights Act of 1964 “the single most dangerous piece of legislation ever introduced in the Congress”, and sponsored legislation to either extend it to the entire country or scrap it altogether.[164] Helms reminded voters that he tried, with a 16-day filibuster, to stop the Senate from approving a federal holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,[264] although he had fewer reservations about establishing a North Carolina state holiday for King.[265] He has been accused of being a segregationist by some political observers and scholars, such as USA Today’s DeWayne Wickham who wrote that Helms “subtly carried the torch of white supremacy” from Ben Tillman.[266][267][268][269]

In 1996 the Department of Justice admonished Helms’s 1990 campaign for mailing 125,000 postcards to households in predominantly African-American precincts warning them (incorrectly) that they could go to jail if they had not updated their addresses on the electoral register since moving.[270] Helms opposed “every piece of civil rights and affirmative action legislation” and blocked “black judges from being considered for the federal bench”.[265] In 1982, he voted against the extension of the Voting Rights Act.[265][265] Helms opposed busing, supported the “racist apartheid regime of South Africa”, and “for years blocked attempts by President Bill Clinton to appoint a Black judge on the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals”.[265] Only when Helms’s own judicial choices were threatened with blocking did attorney Roger Gregory of Richmond, Virginia get confirmed. Helms also tried to block the nomination of Carol Moseley Braun, the first African-American female senator, as ambassador to New Zealand.[265]

re: #11 Eclectic Cyborg

It amazes me how the second you talk about Republican racists like Helms, you hear ZOMG ROBERT BYRD KKK. The difference is Robert Byrd grew into a better person after being a kleagle and opponent of Civil Rights. Jesse Helms was the same man he was when it came to African Americans the day he left the senate as he was the day he entered. And I haven’t even touched on how terrible a homophobe he was too but that’s something that Santorum sees as a virtue.

13 Targetpractice  Nov 18, 2014 11:16:34am

It makes sense if one starts with the assumption that wingnuts live by, which is that everybody gets along best when they “know their place” and “stick to their own kind.” And that seems to just one of the reasons why they hate the President, because he’s not the racially divisive figure they predicted he’d be simply due to his skin color. It has been part of what has frustrated them so much, that they can’t excuse their own racist opinion of him by saying he’s actively provoking such.

14 HappyWarrior  Nov 18, 2014 11:17:30am

Santorum may as well say he wants POTUS to be more like George C. Wallace.

He ignores that this was a terror attack not within territories considered occupied, but inside the Green Line. It ignores that Fatah and Hamas both cheered the senseless slaughter of Jewish religious leaders at prayer. The symbolism of those attacks shouldn’t be lost on anyone, Israelis in particular.

From what I’ve been reading regarding the atrocity earlier today in Jerusalem, there may be a connection to the PFLP in it.

Which is a surprise, to me at least, because I thought the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) had called it a day. It’s George Habash’s old group - Ilych Ramirez Sanchez (aka Carlos) did some dirty deeds for them back in the 70s and if I’m not mistaken, the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion) was also associated with them as well.

In a widely publicized incident on July 22, 1993, Carol Moseley Braun, the first black woman in the Senate and the only black Senator at the time, reported that Helms deliberately sought to offend her by singing “Dixie” in her presence.[228][228][229][230] After Moseley Braun persuaded the Senate to vote against Helms’s amendment to extend the patent of the United Daughters of the Confederacy insignia, which included the Confederate flag, Helms ran into Moseley Braun in an elevator.[228] Helms turned to Senator Orrin Hatch and said, “Watch me make her cry. I’m going to make her cry. I’m going to sing ‘Dixie’ until she cries.”[231] He then proceeded to sing the song about “the good life” during slavery to Moseley Braun.[232][233] In 1999, Helms unsuccessfully attempted to block Moseley Braun’s nomination to be United States Ambassador to New Zealand.[228

Yeah, Carlos the Jackal was a member of the PFLP for awhile, and the RZ’s - Revolutionäre Zellen, a German Marxist terrorist group - were also linked to the PFLP back in the day.

The Red Army Faction trained with the PFLP in the 70s, but the PFLP apparently found the RAF a bit too flaky for their tastes. That’s where I first remember hearing about the PFLP - their connection to the Baader-Meinhof Gang and Carlos way back when.

Hell, just compare this past election to 2012. Even though turnout fell between 2008 and 2012, it was still roughly 57% of all voters who showed up to vote.

This year? 37%. And since we know there’s no way that wingnuts comprised 100% of the turnout, that means that Republican carried the day with at best one-quarter of all eligible voters sounding off.

“Miscommunication”? The author admitted in the comments that the very first thing he starts off with, polls showing that Clinton is trailing potential challengers, were bullshit that he concocted from the thin air. The rest of it is less an editorial as it is a call for liberals to jump on the “FUCK THE BANKS!” bandwagon and hopefully ride that to victory in 2016.

It will probably take the first few sets of 2016 polls like this:

This year is 2014, not 2016.

I dismiss the text as a whole because it’s ridiculous. The NYT op-ed at least had some logic to it, that the DNC needs to come together to stand for something instead of continually reacting to the bullshit lobbed at it by the GOP and scattering the moment it has to take a hard stand on an issue.

By contrast, the DK bit is just another dudebro trying to make an argument against Clinton as the party’s nominee and abandoning issues that enjoy widespread support in favor of declaring open warfare on the banks and major corporations.

The miscommunication lies in the fact, that when one writes something like this, one should think about the “lowest common denominator”, who will misinterpret such things despite the text clearly implying it’s just a hypothetical.

It’s also the way the post was presented graphically. Generally, at KOS, statements inside the little orange boxes are direct quotes from an outside source. Those hypothetical polls were presented that way, whether accidentally or purposefully to “miscommunicate.”

re: #79 andres

Pardon my ignorance, but what other 2 elections?

I’m aware of the midterms and presidential, but being from outside the US, I wasn’t aware of the other 2.

The others usually take care of state, local, referendums, judges, and assorted other positions. When I got elected for Judge of elections for my local precinct it was one of those election times. There was election officials and a couple county judges on the ballot and that was it. States and local authorities usually handle these. I think there are a couple of states that have their governor races during the really off year elections.

They’re only quotes from an outside source when the source is actually given. The pseudo-polls were presented as a hypothetical in the intro sentence - apparently not in a language clear enough for many (though I find it clear just enough). So, a communication fail, since the rhetorical device has become more of a distraction. But not dishonesty.

So, I was at the hair salon this morning. My hairdresser is a solid Democrat, but most of her loony right-wing clients assume that she’s “one of them” and go on as you can imagine.

Anyway, this client is yakking about how she was going to go to New York. but changed her mind because that guy with EBOLA was going around and had infected all these people with it (I muttered, “Yeah, that total number would be zero,”) and there were all these people walking around with EBOLA she didn’t want to risk it.

So instead, she decided it would be much smarter to go on a cruise, because that would be so much safer and wiser.

Nov 16 (Reuters) - A cruise ship with 172 passengers and crew members suffering from a gastrointestinal ailment caused by norovirus was met by public health officials when it docked in California on Sunday, authorities and Carnival Corp said.

The outbreak marks the second time in less than a year that the highly contagious virus has spread on the company’s Crown Princess ship, which is part of its Princess Cruises fleet…

Proves means it would have to be factual. Christmas as a religious holiday is not based on a lot of facts. It is, like religion itself based on faith. So, I would think someone like him would say “you just have to believe” as that works for everything else.

Of course there are all kinds of books involved. I guess that if it is written it must be a fact.

I doubt many folks that want to know the real religious facts behind Christmas are going to trust something by Kirk Cameron.

This answers my question, I suppose:

Christian has three primary objections. First, he doesn’t see Jesus anywhere but the nativity scene, crammed into the corner. Kirk answers him with a long refresher about how Christ was born to die on the cross and redeem man. Fine. Christian doesn’t like the Christmas tree, either. No Christmas trees in the Bible. But Kirk has an explanation for that, too: Man fell because Adam ate fruit from the wrong tree. Man was redeemed because Christ died on a wooden cross. ERGO, CHRISTMAS TREES: “When you walk into a Christmas tree lot, I want you to see hundreds of crosses that will never be used because of Jesus’s finished work.” Pretty sure that’s not the historical root of the tradition, but whatever.

Oh, and that business about the winter solstice? Kirk’s not persuaded:

“The early church had plenty of good reasons to celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25, and it had nothing to do with the winter solstice. [Note: he does not outline these reasons.] By the way, last I checked? It was God who made the winter solstice when he set the planets on their path around the sun. And it’s actually quite fitting that we celebrate the birth of Jesus in the bleak midwinter, when the world appears to be sleeping and dying.”

Ah, the FIRE EVERYTHING school of theological argument.

I honestly think that Jezebel review has all one needs to know about the film :)

But this graph from one of the imdb reviews is classic: (before this section, the reviewer had fallen asleep)

…At what I presume must have been the end of the “movie” there was some ridiculous dance-sequence (you know the type that should signify to the audience that they’re watching a ‘hip’ film) and I decided to call it a day. As I turned to leave, I noticed that the cinema was empty and that I was the last rat to leave the sinking ship. So I left Kirk and his friends to dance to an empty cinema - and for all I know, they still dance there as I write.

This is from a more scholarly source, though by the way of wiki, but as long as I have the full citation, it’s OK:

Ingeborg Weber-Kellermann (1978). Das Weihnachtsfest. Eine Kultur- und Sozialgeschichte der Weihnachtszeit [Christmas: A cultural and social history of Christmastide] (in German). Bucher. p. 22. ISBN 3-7658-0273-5. “Man kann als sicher annehmen daß die Luzienbräuche gemeinsam mit dem Weinachtsbaum in Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts aus Deutschland über die gesellschaftliche Oberschicht der Herrenhöfe nach Schweden gekommen sind. (English: One can assume with certainty that traditions of lighting, together with the Christmas tree, crossed from the upper classes to the manor houses, from Germany to Sweden in the 19th century.)”

So it’s more or less a 19th century custom, as far as the rest of the “Christian world” is concerned.

The “history” isn’t that far off, though. The modern celebrations are just not that old, and it’s become a wildly commercial event.

I’m totally non-religious, BTW, but I do like greenery and bright shiny stuff at this time of the year—helps to break up the gloom of winter and SAD. A very secular 6 weeks ahead for me. : )

If Congress does not pass legislation that would save the Postal Service from financial collapse before the end of its current session, the future of the country’s mail service will be in the hands of a senator who opposes government unions and thinks the Postal Service should be privatized.

In January, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) is slated to take over as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversees the federal workforce and the entire Postal Service. Johnson has said that the Postal Service should go through a bankruptcy process that would result in a downsized, private corporation that would lose the benefits of governmental oversight and regulation…

There are lots of people who don’t pay attention to anything other than TV comedies and what’s for dinner (and lunch and breakfast).

We’re lazy about a lot of things, not the least of which is politics, which we like to leave “to others” and then complain, moan and cry about it.

It’s worse than that - the people who buy into the shit about Keystone, tax cuts, and the minimum wage are really engaged.

Crazy and stupid and demonstrably wrong, but engaged.

re: #240 Targetpractice

That’s not as bad as just finding out that one of the two Dem Senators representing me (Mark Warner) voted for this. And he just won reelection, so he’s good for another four years. I’d love to know what his reasoning was.

I’ve been trying to figure out if the Dems who voted yes did it just for Mary Landrieu and are are persuadable to change their votes in the next session. 4 of them (I’m counting Mary as a loser) lost their re-elections, so those becoming Repub votes are a wash. Manchin and Heidi can’t-spell-her-last-name-without-looking-it-up will never change their votes. Who are the others? Warner, Bennett and Carper and there are 5 others I can’t remember.

We’ll see how the press handles it, but for the last 4 years, the requirement that any bill in the Senate garner 60 votes rarely if ever got labeled as Filibustering.

I got a dollar says they dust that word off, starting in January.

I’d bet most people I know around here wouldn’t even recognize the word “Keystone” even though hating taxes and wanting more pay is pretty instinctual.

Because Landrieu brought this bill, so saying it failed will help hurt her reelection campaign.

The bill will pass next Spring. Obama will sign it in return for the Republicans release of whatever legislation they decide to hold hostage.

Ordinarily I’d agree—Obama doesn’t seem to care much one way or another and the GOP clearly wants this, so it would seem like something he would be willing to trade on.

But the GOP has proven time and time again that what they want most is to be seen as never compromising or dealing with Obama in any way, even if he offers something they want.

Any legislation brought up during the lame duck session will be shouted down because the Republicans now have a mandate and going against the will of less than ten percent of the voters will make baby Jesus cry.

Anyone think the Native American’s displeasure with the pipeline will have much impact on how this turns?

Of course they have been stepped on more than one time…but I’m hoping they raise a huge stink. Didn’t they already call this an act of war against their independent nations?

They’re raising a stink. They won’t have much effect because Keystone has threaded the pipeline between the reservations. There’s the possibility that in some areas the pipeline construction may uncover burial or archeological sites which would have to be dealt with under the relevant laws until the Republican Congress suspends them.

Mississippi Group Seeks To Declare Christianity As State Religion

thinkprogress.org

“As a federal judge prepares to rule on Mississippi’s ban on same-sex marriage, a group known as the Magnolia State Heritage Campaign is trying to cement Christianity as the state’s official religion in its constitution. They are proposing a constitutional amendment that they hope will be on the 2016 ballot.

“The campaign’s Arthur Randallson explained to American Family Association news network OneNewsNow, “We have taken a little bit of time to prepare an initiative that covers promoting Christianity, which is recognized as the principal religion of Mississippi from the founding of the state in 1817 to the present, and affirmed in the state constitution prayer acknowledging the Holy Bible.”

“The actual text of the amendment would read:
The State of Mississippi hereby acknowledges the fact of her identity as a principally Christian and quintessentially Southern state, in terms of the majority of her population, character, culture, history, and heritage, from 1817 to the present; accordingly, the Holy Bible is acknowledged as a foremost source of her founding principles, inspiration, and virtues; and, accordingly, prayer is acknowledged as a respected, meaningful, and valuable custom of her citizens. The acknowledgments hereby secured shall not be construed to transgress either the national or the state Constitution’s Bill of Rights.” More

Which Christianity did they have in mind? Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Anglican? They really need to be more specific.
