New LGF Feature: Download a Copy of Your Entire Image Library

Back it up
LGF • Views: 28,961

Here’s a brand new feature I’m sure everyone who uses LGF’s personalized Image Library system (available free to registered users) will appreciate: now you can download your entire collection of images in a ZIP file. When you expand the file, it creates a directory structure with all the images neatly filed in folders and subfolders named by dates.

Since these zip archives can be quite large depending on how many images you’ve uploaded, there’s a limit of one archive download per user per week.

Still to do: I haven’t decided yet how to handle tags, captions and other “meta” information about the images. But having a complete backup of all your images is such a useful feature as is, I decided to go live with it now.

It’s simple to use; only one button labeled “Download Image Library,” visible at upper right in the Image Library main page.

This is what I love about LGF, the site always being in a state of evolution, changing to make things easier for posters while also improving their experience. Compare that to sites like FR, which hasn’t changed since Clinton was in office, and other sites which either go with what came in the blog-making box or (far worse) adopt Disqus for comments.

Kudos to you, our lizard alien overlords.

OK, there is so much wrong with this:

2 Investigates: Fire department ties with home restoration company

ATLANTA —

When Atlanta firefighters arrive at a fire scene, they do more than put out the fire. They also call a private company to board up the property after a fire. The homeowner doesn’t choose the company, the fire department does.

Critics wonder whether Atlanta is playing favorites, with big insurance money at stake.

Zahi Elias owns several rental properties. Last July, his tenant called to say his house in Atlanta was on fire.

When Elias arrived, a company called 1-800- BOARDUP was already on the scene, and the tenant had signed an agreement to let the company board up the house.

“I said ‘No, this is my property, not the tenant’s property. I will board it.’ He wasn’t happy,” Elias said of the BoardUp representative. He called the two men with the company pushy.

Retired fire chief responds:

Retired Atlanta Fire Section Chief Jimmy Hodges gets a paycheck from a restoration company, but if you ask where he works, he’ll say, “1-800- BOARDUP.”

“Every franchise has to have a director of emergency services and usually it’s a chief officer like myself, retired,” Hodges said. “We understand emergency management. We understand what people go through.”

Nothing to see here…move on…

Traditional capitalism is seeing a need and creating a business to fill it. American capitalism is creating a business which pressures others into agreeing a need exists and you’re the only one who can fill it.

I think I need to get This War of Mine, the game looks amazing. Finally a war / survival game from the civilian perspective, without zombies. I like that it’s not the traditional murder simulator that the industry seems to churn out by the dozen, but instead actually tries to somewhat realistically depict moral dilemmas. The actions you direct your survivors to take carry real consequences for their psyches, you can’t have them beat up, kill or rob people without seriously depressing and possibly breaking them permanently. You have to look out for their mental and physical well being.

When I was a firefighter/EMT in Illinois, we had a supply of huge blue tarps to temporarily cover holes in roofs after tornadoes and such, which we put on at no charge to whoever owned the building because that was just part of the taxpayer-funded service.

Taking a kickback from a company for boarding up windows without even asking the owner? good grief…

Most of us have expensive cell phones. IF you have insurance through your carrier you likely have it through a company called Asurion. They charge a per month rate on your bill (usually 6.99 or 9.99) and then if you need to make a claim you have to pay a deductible of anywhere from $50 to $200.

They are a HORRIBLE company and what’s worse, they are a virtual monopoly since practically EVERY major carrier in the U.S. uses them for insurance services.

You can’t escape them just by switching providers. Personally I just pay out of pocket for replacement phones (not that I need them much, I take care of my stuff). That might be more of a pain in the butt, but if you consider a years worth of premiums on Asurion plus a top level deductible can run $300+ and you can get a reasonable phone for that price, it makes sense to me. It also means I don’t have waste any of my time or money on this sham of a company.

My god, I didn’t know this. Must read article.

Blackface was used to push products from cigarettes to pancakes while minstrel songs were turned into sheet music, sold and sung around the world. Classic American songs such as “Jimmy Crack Corn,” “Camptown Races” and “Someone’s in the Kitchen with Dinah” all began as minstrel songs. Children’s rhymes and games also are drawn from our minstrel past. “Eeny Meeny, Miny, Moe,” initially commanded that the listener to “catch a ni**er by his toe.” “Do Your Ears Hang Low” was originally the 1829 song entitled “Zip Coon.” The story of the children’s book Ten Little Monkeys was first published as Ten Little Ni**er Boys where each boy was killed as the story progressed.

There is this “traditional” thing in the Netherlands called “Zwarte Piet” which is kind of like a Santa’s elf, except it’s Santa’s black slave.

We visited Amsterdam two years ago and “Zwarta Piet” was scampering around in the airport, greeting travelers. IN THE FREAKING AIRPORT which is a major European hub with flights coming/going from Africa, Asia, South America and North America where not everybody appreciates this quaint “Dutch treat.”

Also, “Zwarte Piet” is from a children’s book written in the 1880’s, just like most “Christmas traditions” are from Charles Dickens.

This is one of the reasons we don’t want to have a conversation (as a country) about race. Because so many of us don’t know the real history of slavery and the perceived notion of black people.

And I’m speaking in general terms when I say us. Personally, I have learned so much in the last three months than I have in a lifetime thanks to the activists on the ground in Ferguson.

re: #43 Targetpractice

I think it more of an antidote for the war porn that has passed for video games since 9/11.

It also offers a not so subtle critique of the empty consumerism in non-war games like The Sims, and “first world problems” in general.

And it’s The Sims, mostly, but transplanted from consumerist America to an unspecified (but apparently Eastern European) nation shattered by conflict. Your characters’ motivations, then, are not a bigger telly, a sprint up the career ladder or blurred-out nookie with the neighbour’s wife, but simply eating, sleeping, staying warm, not getting killed by illness or invader. Even toileting isn’t a priority here.

UI is minimal, so you don’t get a food meter or a sleep meter, but simply the damning statements of “tired”, “hungry” or “sick”. It’s on you to do something about that, and often enough you simply can’t. The key dilemma throughout is shared with Papers, Please - on which necessity for survival do you compromise today? Those parts Katya brought back from her last run into a nearby building could build a burner, or a water filter, or a knife, or simply be used as fuel for the rickety stove. Or they could be traded for food if one of the local opportunists stops by your shelter today. There’s never a right answer. Your survivors’ wellbeing will almost inevitably suffer whatever you decide to build them, or feed them.

And even during this desperate struggle for subsistence, luxuries are still needed. Your civilians will see and do terrible things - others’ suffering, others’ violence, their own violence to others - and their mental health will decline for it. A bad cigarette, a bottle of moonshine or a cup of coffee might help them function, but can you really justify the resources and effort necessary to obtain such indulgences when there’s no damn food or firewood?

Another sandbox game I really liked that attacked the click / wait simulation gaming genre and modern consumerism was Little Inferno. Totally different and much less depressing, but it managed to be amazingly fun to play and totally merciless in its criticism at the same time. These games obviously aren’t for everyone, I especially think that most self described hardcore dedicated “gamers” are going hate the message, because it’s aimed squarely at them and an industry that caters to and rewards their anti-social entertainment preferences.

I remember an old western in which a cranky judge is presented with two cowboys who had been charged with lynching a local outlaw. The judge is in a hurry so he ends the proceeding by fining the miscreants $20 each for “malicious mischief.” The scene was played for laughs.
Who would have imagined that we would see this played out for real in the twenty-first century, though there is nothing humorous about it.
It’s also worth noting that twenty bucks was more in the 1870s than five hundred is today.

The only way to win is to get your people to survive until the war ends, which is always after a random number of days and unknowable. If circumstances make them too depressed they may leave, stealing supplies, or even commit suicide. It treats sadness just as importantly as other conditions like hunger, sickness, wounded and tired. In one way or another they can all undo the survivors. Also their conditions impact the others, they worry about each other so you can’t just sacrifice one for the good of the group and not have it affect the rest profoundly.

This shit is bleak.

Is this a game you want to play? No. Is it a game anyone with a beating heart should play? Yes. A million times yes. It’s a longform exercise in empathy, a sobering piece of work that fills in the blanks left when all we see of war are the headshots. It’s a much-needed course correct in the current shoot-first-ask-questions-never gaming landscape that supposes war is won because one supreme badguy caught a bullet through his brainstem. No: It’s won when the people who lived under his boot get to go home.

This is an industry that has spawned games like The Long Dark, Don’t Starve, Rust, and other games where you’re effectively tossed into a bad situation with virtually no supplies, no help, and reliant on what you can find or on others to survive. And none of those mentions has a victory condition besides how long you managed to survive.

It is about time for American’s to remember millions of us are in fact immigrants and it is time for us to be as welcoming to those already here as all those stories of the first Thanksgiving even if they are idealistic stories.

It is time for America to grow the hell up and start acting like decent peoples instead of close-minded, bigoted jackasses.

That’s why I get so angry when I hear a white person complain that race isn’t an issue and “they” always play the race card.

Ugh.

And it applies not just to black folk, but also to Native Americans, Latinos and Asian Americans. Yellow face is a real thing….

Yeah, I hope so, too. Bad thing about a lot of new (but cheaply made) construction is that trusses and rafters are made with 2x4s now (and for a long time here in the South) where they used to be built with 2x6s. My first house, built in 1956, used 2x6s, but the second house, built in the ’70s, used 2x4s. I would hope houses which had to handle a lot of snow would be built with 2x8s in order to handle it.

We would call Uber cars illegal around here. Anyone using a personal car for a taxi service has to have a permit and a medallion. Within a company, if a driver is assigned another vehicle, he must obtain a permit for that particular cab.

Personally, if I had to take a cab, I’d rather call an established company, not have some random driver pick me up, even though everyone talks about how “convenient” Uber is and how they’re using technology. I’d feel safer in a Yellow Cab, but that’s just me.

Houses now use engineered trusses which are made from 2x4 and metal nailing plates. They actually hold more weight than 2x8 fir/2x10 spruce.

A lot of the houses built in the ’50s had walls built using nominal sized 2x4 which was actually 2”x4” not the 1.5” x 3.5” used now. Up here in the wild cold country they’ve gone to double wall construction made of 2x4s. From the ’80s on, houses had walls of 2x6. However, both the double wall and 2x6 wall were for the insulation room not structural strength.

(I worked 7 years in a lumber yard & did material takeoffs for houses)

H.R. 1422, which passed 229-191, would shake up the EPA’s Scientific Advisory Board, placing restrictions on those pesky scientists and creating room for experts with overt financial ties to the industries affected by EPA regulations.”

I guess a lot depends on which part of the country you live? I’d wager a lot of stuff didn’t get done quite right in the last construction boom, engineered trusses, wall framing, or not. My son, who does commercial tile work, is always complaining about wavy walls, unlevel floors, etc, and he works in commercial bldgs, both new and remodels. And seeing houses going up and completed in 30 days is a bit rattling, at least from where I sit. All that vinyl siding makes me wanna cry. : )

That’s some amazing shit:

In what might be the most ridiculous aspect of the whole thing, the bill forbids scientific experts from participating in “advisory activities” that either directly or indirectly involve their own work. In case that wasn’t clear: experts would be forbidden from sharing their expertise in their own research — the bizarre assumption, apparently, being that having conducted peer-reviewed studies on a topic would constitute a conflict of interest.

Once again, GOPers seem to have a very fuzzy understanding of the US Constitution and the power of the executive branch.

So, earlier today, the GOP was claiming that EOs were illegal or somehow in violation of the Constitution (ignoring all the times when a GOP president did the same - and did an EO regarding immigration no less). Now, they’re warning that a presidential action without Congressional input will somehow not be followed on a foreign policy matter when it is the President who has that power under the Constitution.

Methinks that for all the talk about the GOP carrying copies of the Constitution, they ought to spend more time reading the Constitution than waving it around like a hanky.

Strange.

Cleaning some boxes of crud, throwing somethings, saving others. You know the drill. Then I found a notebook, a journal I’d kept back in the late 80’s. Out of the army, college aged but not in college (working so my gf could finish her degree), full of mostly the usual self important bad philosophy, worse poetry & drunken bluster that you’d expect.

But then I notice a somewhat better moment or two…

“at a military parade”

Spear tipped
In front of the steel berets

Blue eyes, blue wings laugh -
Untroubled a dragonfly lands.
