President Obama Announces Immigration Reform Speech on Facebook

Social
Politics • Views: 30,213

Certain to be the cause of a major eruption of right wing craziness, the President announced his speech on immigration reform tonight on Facebook, and with a post at the White House blog by Josh Earnest: Tune In: The President Addresses the Nation on Immigration Reform | the White House.

Our immigration system has been broken for decades — and every minute we fail to act, millions of people who live in the shadows but want to play by the rules and pay taxes have no way to live right by the law and contribute to our country.

So tomorrow night, President Obama will address the nation to lay out the executive actions he’s taking to fix our broken immigration system. You can watch the President live tomorrow night at 8 p.m. ET at whitehouse.gov.

This is a step forward in the President’s plan to work with Congress on passing common-sense, comprehensive immigration reform. He laid out his principles for that reform two years ago in Del Sol High School in Las Vegas — and that’s where he’ll return on Friday to discuss why he is using his executive authority now, and why Republicans in Congress must act to pass a long-term solution to immigration reform.

We’ll be there with a live video thread, of course.

I’ve been waiting for something like this for years.

There’s really no stopping it now.

There are a couple of Latino children in my g-grandson’s preschool class.

And a teaching assistant who is also Latino. She and the mothers speak Spanish with each other which doesn’t bother me at all. I had them laughing when I told my grandson, “Besame mucho” when I was leaving one day.

I’m going to encourage my g-grandson to learn a few words/phrases and perhaps do some Spanish immersion at a later date (assuming I’m still around), and maybe other languages, too. Why do Americans resist other languages so much?

I have hope, though, and it’s with the kids. : )

I’ve been forced to try to deal with foreign in-laws for years, begging them to send us documentation we need, with sporadic responses and vague promises, but them never getting around to it. Anything to get around that will be appreciated.

This should be concerning…….

Youtube Video

G2 calls it “the last round you will ever need” and describes its effects as “radically invasive.” As you’ll see in the video, the bullet doesn’t just stay in one piece upon entering it’s target. The round uses its forward momentum to send the edges of the bullet ripping apart into your attacker. This not only puts a round into the target, it also sends shrapnel into various parts of the body as well, effectively destroying vital organs.

The GOP will go batcrap insane, no matter how sensible the actions taken are. Even if the President simply provides the same exact actions as President Reagan did years back, they’ll claim it was unconstitutional or somehow in violation of … well… something.

That’s despite pretty much every recent President invoking an EO on immigration that was eventually codified into law.

That’d include amending the number of refugees that were admitted (and the President ought to reiterate that very language in his EO - just to rub it in).

Entry of persons into the US under EO 12172, etc.

Way I figure it, the man has put this off for months, has time and again brought up EOs as a method of addressing the problems with the system, and each time Republicans have threatened to junk immigration reform altogether if he went through with it. Now they’re saying that the bill that has sat on Boehner’s desk for months will instead be junked and we’ll start from scratch next year.

Fuck that, this was a bipartisan bill, it had bipartisan support, and it deserved a vote in both houses of Congress. It’s way past time to call the GOP’s bluff.

The majority of immigrants by 1910 were the “swarthy” eastern and southern Europeans, not as preferred as those from the British Empire and northern Europe, who had preceded them, of course.

Something had to be done about it!

It’s just another frangible design, they’ve been on the market for years. The effects look scary as hell on ballistic gelatin. I’m all for outlawing them simply because they make a surgeon’s job a total fucking nightmare, but this isn’t a new development. On the plus side they don’t penetrate through walls, on the down side unlike hollow-points they don’t retain enough mass to be useful hunting medium or large game. The sole use is for killing civilians.

Every few years some manufacturer or other comes up with what’s touted as the ultimate self-defense round. The announcements are always complete with photos of the thing devastating ballistic gel, watermelons, plywood or something else. And they always turn out to be crap under actual field conditions - except when fired at ballistic gel, watermelons, etc. But they do sell a lot of them to gun fuckers who can no longer masturbate to hollow points.

The most effective anti-personnel round that I know of has been around for years and it’s advertised for its safety characteristics, not for it’s ability to kill.

I see it as an admission that they’ve nothing to offer immigrants. They don’t know how to win over people who think that the community should look after its members, instead of “every man for himself.” Don’t know what to offer people who think good public schools, efficient public services, and assistance to the least fortunate are the things by which America should be defined. It totally boggles their minds how they’re not winning over people who they know have strong religious sentiments with their 1950s-era social policies.

It was the “yellow peril” back then, first applied to the Chinese laborers, then to the Japanese. The reasons, aside from racism, were:

the fear that the mass immigration of Asians threatened white wages and standards of living, and the fear that they would eventually take over and destroy western civilization, replacing it with their ways of life and values.

In other words, the same fears and bigotry as we see now regarding Central American immigrants. Asians are now (barely) OK.

Justice Anthony Kennedy:

“…Congress has specified which aliens may be removed from the United States and the procedures for doing so. Aliens may be removed if they were inadmissible at the time of entry, have been convicted of certain crimes, or meet other criteria set by federal law. Removal is a civil, not criminal, matter. A principal feature of the removal system is the broad discretion exercised by immigration officials. Federal officials, as an initial matter, must decide whether it makes sense to pursue removal at all. If removal proceedings commence, aliens may seek asylum and other discretionary relief allowing them to remain in the country or at least to leave without formal removal.”

No he has not. But there are now six women claiming essentially the same scenario. In addition there are lot of people who are taking his, doubtless lawyer inspired, refusal to talk as a defacto admission of guilt.

I’m well aware of regional dialect. I always laugh when I hear how the Spanish speakers in the cities on the west coast of South America always think the Spanish speakers in places in Central America and (especially) north of Mexico D.F., how “redneck” and “simple” it comes across.

The same thing happens with English in the United States. People talk very differently between, say, Colorado and Mississippi.

Not all Republicans are rednecks. But if you are a redneck, chances are you’re a Republican. All you have to do is look at polling data. People who fit into the general redneck category are overwhelmingly Republican, and disproportionately of the tea party persuasion.

Rednecks are ultra-traditionalist far right conservatives (on most issues) and they always have been. At this point in our history, the gop is where they feel comfortable.

He calls it “language hacking.” fluentin3months.com This is not an endorsement, BTW. I think his attitude toward learning a language is too dependent on having an outgoing, gregarious personality like his.

Your choices are good ones. Add Chinese or Persian/Farsi to the list for good measure.

If you’re interested in a relatively ‘exotic’ foreign language, try Indonesian. The grammar you can pick up in an hour. Of course, as with all languages, real fluency will take years.

original intent, i suppose, means nothing in regard to immigration, since it was virtually unrestricted from 1789 until sometime around 1920 iirc

The first legislation restricting immigration was the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act — exactly what it says on the tin. A few decades later they decided Chinese weren’t the only people who needed to be shut out, so the 1924 bill set quotas to limit Jews and Italians.

I recently met a woman from Mexico - I won’t say where, but I see her almost every day - who was in an honest-to-god sham marriage to keep her visa until last year. I’d heard of such things but never talked to anybody who had actually done it.

She paid a guy (a friend of her brother’s) $4,000 to be her husband (because “Latinos never do anything for free” - her words, not mine! LOL), went to a lawyer together - and NOT a scam lawyer - prepped the paperwork and got married, changed her name, the whole nine yards… Stayed married for a few years and then got divorced after whatever status she wanted was squared away. I’m not even sure what she did because I tried reading the government info on marriage visas and it made my head spin. Her and her “husband” were friends but didn’t even live together.

She did what she had to do. She’s educated, speaks English just fine, nice girl, her parents actually used to live here in Texas until a few years ago, and they want to come back to move permanently, they’re just saving up (her father runs his own business in Mexico). Her next goal is citizenship.

I told her if she came over the border in a van to pick fruit or scrub toilets nobody would worry about where she came from, because the real value of an immigrant is in service to capital. She didn’t understand why it was such a tremendous pain in the ass just to get here. She’s indistinguishable from every other darker-than-white resident of Texas you’ll ever meet, except for her accent, and she works in financial customer service…

My own mother has been a resident alien for decades and whenever she needs to do anything with the INS, it is, indeed, a tremendous pain in the ass.

It’s the system that’s fucked, not the people. If Obama has to Executive Order our way to something better, more sensible, and more humane, so be it.

That’s because, as such things go, the public only cared about the danger to themselves portrayed in the allegations made by Sinclair about conditions in meat packing plants. Even Teddy Roosevelt, the man today seen as one of the first truly modern presidents in his relationship with big business, thought Sinclair was a crank and reading The Jungle only swayed him enough to order investigations for meat packing plants. Sinclair was (naturally) livid that the results of his book were a system where the government paid for inspections of meat plants, instead of requiring the owners to pick up the bill.

India’s ‘yoga ministry’ stirs doubts among scientists

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has thrown his weight behind the country’s traditional systems of medicine earlier this month by creating the Ministry for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH). Interesting that Modi has gone the “traditional medicine” route. Mao Zedong did the same thing in the early days of revolutionary China, partly to encourage nationalism and partly (or maybe mostly) to conceal the inadequacies of the Chinese medical system. Now there are two medical systems in China: traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine. TCM includes the concept of qi, herbs, moxibustion, massage, acupuncture, taiji, and such like, all of which have limited success in dealing with major systemic illnesses, like heart disease or cancer. But many people in China and abroad swear by TCM.

So, the cynic in me says Modi is trying the same hoodwink game, to cover up the fact that most Indians lack access to decent medical care.

I don’t really have a go to source for my news. I mainly use the the network news sites as a starting point for the big stories and then try to find a local news station for further detail. I probably have at least one link to a news site in each State.

I gotta say, circumstantial evidence points to this lady as the killer. Cyanide in the deceased’s bloodstream is a smoking gun.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Buffalo wasn’t quite able to catch its breath overnight as heavy lake effect snows once again blasted the region (and the Tug Hill Plateau area of NY as well).

Another 2-3 feet expected in areas already hard hit.

And there was again thundersnow last night. A friend who lives outside Buffalo reported being awakened by multiple instances. She had just managed to dig a path to the street, and more snow is on the way before the weekend - when temperatures are expected to jump to the upper 50s and low 60s. There’s also a chance of rain, which is a disastrous combination.

We’re going to start hearing about building collapses and widespread flooding as the snow melts and compacts on roofs.

And not just his.

Besides Isao’s death, police are also investigating the 2012 death of Ms Kakehi’s 71-year-old then partner, who collapsed while riding a motorbike.

Investigators found cyanide in his blood sample, said Kyodo. His death was initially attributed to heart disease.

And I wonder if they are going to find it in this guy as well.

Following Isao’s death, Ms Kakehi began a relationship with another 75-year-old man. He died in September after falling ill, following a meal with Ms Kakehi at a restaurant, according to Jiji Press.

Hey all.

Did anyone notice how matter of fact and just another shooting the reporting of the FSU incident has been? I guess random mass shooting has now passed into the daily lifestyle of America. So sad.

And regarding Ferguson and that image of the cops out last night, how tone deaf can so many law enforcement and politicians be? They do not seem to understand their whole response to what caused the issues and why people are protesting are being reflected in their actions. Heavy handed police and political response to being black in Ferguson (and really, in America) got Michael Brown killed, and now they are doubling down and probably going to end up killing more African Americans for being black and protesting in Ferguson.

And if anyone feels like it, a kind thought for an older brother (69) of mine. He has been struggling with some real bad health issues and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s a little over a year ago and he seems to have gotten to a stage that he has no muscular control in his body. He literally can not stand or use his arms to help out. My sister-in-law found him on the floor a day or so ago and couldn’t help him. She called 911 and they took him to the hospital where he is currently. They don’t know if it is a drug reaction or what at this stage. I just found out last night. He is in Arizona, and me being stuck in bad economic times in Ohio just fucking sucks right now. Thanks.

Developing in NJ:

2 dead, 2 injured, but no further details available.

And that’s after a shooting at FSU overnight, leaving several people injured and the gunman dead after being shot by campus police. The shooting took place at the university library.

One wounded student was seen crying out — “I’ve been shot” — and clutching his leg as blood spread over his pants.

The gunman was killed by Tallahassee police after he opened fire on officers fr0m an access ramp outside the Strozier Library, filled with at least 300 students studying for end-of-semester exams.

“He was challenged by the officers and given commands to drop his weapon, but the male fired at the officers,” said a police statement. “The officers returned fire, killing the gunman.”

One of those wounded was grazed by a bullet and treated at the scene. The others were taken to Tallahassee Memorial HeathCare hospital. One was listed in critical condition and the other was stable, the Associated Press reported.

By 4:15 a.m., the all clear message was issued for the school, where classes were canceled Thursday and police continued with interviews and investigations. The gunman was slumped face down, the AP reported. A gray baseball cap lay near his head.

Tallahassee’s police chief, Michael DeLeo, described it as an “isolated incident and one person acting alone.” But he offered no additional details of the gunman or possible motives during a predawn news conference.

“This person for whatever reason produced a handgun and then began shooting students in the library,” Florida State University Police Chief David Perry told reporters at a morning news conference.

Meanwhile, despite the right wing anti-science loons pointing at the current temps across parts of the US, the actual global temperatures continue rising.

Jan-Oct 2014 global avg temp highest on record for period.

Again. Global warming is happening. It’s not going away. It’s not getting weaker. The temperatures continue rising. It’s wishful thinking (actively burying head in sand) to think that it’s not occurring, or that heavy snow in Buffalo is proof that global warming is nonsense.

Global warming will actually create conditions ripe for further massive snowfalls like that seen downwind from all the Great Lakes. Warmer temperatures will keep the lakes warmer and reduce their freeze-overs, which means that when Arctic cold air rushes in as the jet stream oscillates, you’ll see more events like those pummeling Buffalo this week. These events rely on tremendous temperature differentials between air and water temperatures. Global warming will only accelerate those differences.

Lemme guess. He’s used. They called themselves “national socialists” as an argument for them being leftists even though their first political persecutions were social democrats and communists and that they equated Jews with said two movements.

So, basically, he’s pulling the Communist trick of trying to use the label to fool people. What does North Korea call itself? What does China call itself?

Too bad it’s not being given by someone really important like Ted Cruz of Rand Paul. But a major policy speech by the POTUS? They’re supposed to interrupt their crapfest of programming for that?

Scots-Irish fella. He’s really not a bad dude and he’ll forever have my respect for ending the career of George “Macaca” Allen but at the same time, if he wanted to do this, he should have either stayed in the Senate and or not disappeared entirely from politics after retiring. Hell, I saw John Warner doing more for Mark Warner this past election than I saw Webb doing and John Warner isn’t even in the same party as him. Webb’s not a bad guy but not really presidential material. He could make a good cabinet secretary though like defense or vets affairs.

They were neither left, nor right, if these terms are seen in their American context. In a more general context, the political ideology was far right populist, the economic policy had a healthy mix of what one could call a “left-wing” component to it (if we call welfare state “left-wing”, for example).

The point being, they’re infamous for their ideological, i.e. right-wing atrocities, not for building the Autobahn, making the trains go on time or breathing.

It really is creepy. The whispers of “disloyalty”. The talks of Muslims/Jews wanting to kill non-Muslims/Jews. I think that’s the thing looking at it that angers me most about people like Pam Geller. She has to know as a Jewish woman that throughout history Jews have been accused of some very vile things by Antisemites but yet she goes on and does the same exact same thing to Muslims. I mean it would be bad enough if she weren’t Jewish mind you so I am not saying “”Shame on you Pam for doing this, you’re a Jew.” More so that being a Jew should make her more sensitive to the scapegoating of others. Hell being part Irish definitely plays a role in my sympathy to people who want self rule and to be able to practice their religion freely. As well as immigrants as a whole.

Yeah. People call me oversensitive when I point out that the shit the Kremlin and Tea Party crews is trying is old—not to mention very bad—news. And the similarities seem to increase as time goes by, I just keep wondering how long before just about the only thing which distinguishes the two from NSDAP will be the name of the scapegoats and in what “reich(s)” name the atrocities are committed.

Thought so. Knew he was born in the Baltic states but I wasn’t totally sure if the place where he was born was in the Russian empire. I have no doubt at all that he was inspired by what he probably witnessed as a young man. The worst pogroms in the Russian empire in my observations happened in times of turmoil- following first Czar Alexander’s assassination in 1881 and the unrest during the Russo-Japanese War in the mid 1900’s when Alfred Rosenberg would have been a young man coming of age.

Humility really isn’t Rand’s strong suit is it. And I’ll give Rand some credit. He’s not a total dick like some Republicans are about restoring rights but as this tweet gets at, no one has done more for civil rights in Congress than John Lewis and he in fact nearly died doing so. Paul’s statements show how little respect he has for history and for his fellow Congressman. Plus Paul is also a two-faced asshole.

332 HappyWarrior  Nov 20, 2014 9:22:26am

You can’t call yourself a strong champion of civil rights when you’re on record of saying you would have voted against the most important civil rights legislation of last century and when you employed a “Confederate avenger.” Plus Rand needs to show respect to the AA community. His actions at Howard showed that he’s a total jerk who thinks AA voters are too stupid to know that the Republican Party once supported civil rights.

It is as if Obama doing the address about his executive action is like a Catholic priest walking up to a house that is full of demons and all the demons are out to scare him away or something.

Is Savage’s or Fischer’s head spinning, or are they levitating?

All Obama has to do is say “I’m going to speak tonight on an important issue” and it just drives them crazy. They’re going to be so bored when Obama leaves office because they will have to find a new outlet for their hatred.

The junior senator who has delusions of grandeur ought to get a thumb sucker and pacifier.

[Senator Rand Paul ✔ @SenRandPaul

The “president who thinks he’s a king” starter pack. cc:@BarackObama ]

I bet ol’ Rand is hoping he gets that kit next. Fucker.

By the way, what a sophomoric display by him. A 12 year old boy wouldn’t even be impressed. This is a senator. This is a guy that wants to be president. Disqualified.

God says I can press this shiny, red button.

God says have a T.V. show
God says baby do some blow
God says taxes are a sin
God says pour the money in
Rape the poor, faith no more
Faith for cash, make me laugh
Faith no more, face the whore
Rape your past, make me laugh

God says have a swimming pool
God say keep the doghouse cool
God says planes and boats and cars
God says have an amusement park
God says go and masturbate
God says file taxes late
God says paint your face all sick
God says be a real prick
God says have a T.V. show
God says baby do some blow
God says taxes are a sin
God says pour the money in

To be fair, he never said anything like that. Raw Story lied.

Unfortunately, to far too many, this constitutes a ‘brave stand’ and not only will he not get any blowback from it that matters, but he’ll get praised to high hell, because, you know, GOP isn’t supposed to be accountable for fucking anything.

So what you are saying is…asking for just a little bit of maturity and class out of mop-head is just asking for too much?

You probably are right.

Not when he gets rewarded for being a little shit and then projecting his shittiness on his political opponents. GOP projection is how they’ve gotten away with acting like Obama is simultaneous a despotic tyrant decreeing everything from on high without question and a weak-kneed ineffectual dope who can’t do anything, without getting called out for it.
