About President Obama’s Executive Action on Immigration

Deferred action

Sahil Kapur has a good backgrounder on what to expect from Obama’s announcement of an executive action guaranteed to send the entire right wing into a frenzy: All You Need to Know About Obama’s Executive Action to Legalize 5 Million.

The cornerstone of Obama’s executive action is a new “deferred action” program to authorize undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents temporarily live and work in the country, as long as they’ve resided here for at least 5 years and can show that their child was born before the date of Obama’s announcement. This huge action covers more than 4 million people. Separately, Obama will expand his 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which currently covers people born after 1981 who came to the country before June 15, 2007 — the expanded program will scrap the age cap and move the cutoff date to January 1, 2010. It’s expected to cover some 270,000 new so-called DREAMers.

Despite intense lobbying by immigrant-rights groups, the action will not cover parents of DREAMers, or DACA beneficiaries. A senior administration official said that after an exhaustive review of the White House’s legal options, “we made a determination that the law essentially did not support that. … By executive action he can only do so much.”

This action is temporary, and can be reversed by the next president. “It is not a pathway to citizenship,” a senior administration official stressed, saying that the administration will begin accepting applications in the spring (potentially sooner for the expanded DACA program). Each applicant will be required to pass a background check to receive what will be a three-year work authorization under both programs. They’ll also have to pay taxes and stay on the right side of the law. Their reprieves and work permits are granted on the basis of the longstanding exercise of prosecutorial discretion, and can be revoked at any time at the discretion of the Secretary of Homeland Security.

And of course:

Republicans are gearing up to mount a massive backlash that could include a government shutdown standoff or a lawsuit. The conservative base is apoplectic about Obama’s actions, and rank-and-file GOP lawmakers are floating everything from impeachment to jailing the president.

His Reichstag fire moment is making it easier to naturalize for millions of people. Reichstag fire moment, you use that phrase wingnuts, I do not think you know what it means. What a bunch of hysterical little children the GOP and right are. Obama wouldn’t have to be using executive action on this if Boehner wasn’t so beholden to the extremists that threaten him by the balls everytime he even gives the appearance of working with President Obama on anything. Go ahead and try to jail or impeach him for this GOP and I guarantee that the joy you felt two Tuesdays ago will be replaced with being reminded why the American voters gave this president two terms.

There are too many of them, and they don’t take insults lightly, let alone physical violence. I’m not saying some lunatic won’t go nuts, because this is a country full of lunatics, but I don’t think it will be organized.

The 1986 bill affected 2.9M.

66 Weet  Nov 20, 2014 4:50:03pm

So I just got home, and realized Obama is going to give his immigration speech, thought I might be late, and so I turned on MSNBC. I caught the end of some guy named Danny Vargas saying, “Well, we believe it’s unconstitutional, and Obama didn’t even give the new Congress a chance to work with him…” and onward about how they were planning to compromise, etc.

Is there any TV for progressives? Nobody immediately called Danny a liar, told him the Rethugs have been intransigent for many years, that there’s nothing unconstitutional, etc. Are there any tv hosts that have any moxy to call these lying Rethugs out, directly and to their face? I don’t care if they discussed this before I turned the tv on. You have to call them out every single time they use their Frank-Luntz-approved Rethug lies — every time, forcefully, right to their face.

This made me so angry that I turned it off immediately.

I’ll be watching online.

The corporate-owned news media along with Rethug lies are on the verge of ruining this country. Voter exit polls show people voted to raise minimum wage, and then voted for the Senator who is against raising minimum wage. We must have people willing to speak up every time these despots sell their claptrap on tv.

Oh, and I know the networks aren’t carrying the President’s speech, and reportedly they think it’s too ‘political’. This is a perfect example of just how perverse they are.

Do you continue to stay with someone if you think they raped you?

“Serignese says after the alleged rape, she willingly stayed with Cosby in Las Vegas for some time, but could not specify how long or whether the two had sex again during their time together. The two also maintained sporadic contact for years after the alleged rape.

And if you can’t remember if you actually had sex with him again, but thought you were pregnant, how could you remember that detail? Wouldn’t that mean you did have sex?

“Serignese said she returned to the hotel sometime after the rape and stayed with Cosby for numerous nights, though she said she couldn’t remember precisely when or for how long. She said she also cannot remember if they had sex again, but recalled other details, including an expansive penthouse suite with a sunken living room, pinball machine and Miles Davis records littered on the floor. She said she eventually thought she might be pregnant and Cosby told her to leave.”

Why do you wait 26 yrs to file a report? Why do you take unknown pills from someone you don’t really know? I just don’t know what to think about this, since she tried to continue having a relationship with him over the years, even asking for money over 10 years later, which he gave her when she was injured. I would never, ever have a relationship with the man who held a knife to my throat, nor look him up for any reason whatsoever.

bigstory.ap.org

I don’t doubt that Cosby messed around with other women and he’s probably a hypocrite, to boot. But all of a sudden, after so many years, why are these women popping up? The statute of limitations has run out on these incidents being reported, and everyone but everyone is taking them at face value, even though there has never been a trial on any of them.

If Bill Cosby can’t explain himself and his side of what these women are describing, he should just retire.

Let the trial by public opinion progress, I suppose.

Interesting. The network may not be carrying Obama’s speech, but our local NBC affiliate is. Of course this is the SF Bay Area, and it isn’t prime time yet here.

re: #66 Weet

I think this is what they pass off as so called balanced reporting. I’ve noticed they do not attack the messenger, but wait until they are off to attack their message.

I’d like them to be more in their faces too, but our media is to scared to piss off one viewer that might have a Nielsen box.

It is what it is. I’m tuned in to see it on broadcast. Shrug.

“Those are facts…”

He just lost the RWNJs.

Does nobody remember what it was like before? We had some illegal workers, mostly for the big ranchers. Our clothing industry was American and unionized. Now it’s sweatshops, mostly out of the country, but a few survive in Southern Cal. We had industry with good wages for industrial workers. People had pensions from their employers that were pretty good.

The right always plays it as an “invasion of illegals,” but it was actually bonehead Reaganomics that opened the gates to hell. What the president is doing is good, but it’s not going to change much.

What we need is some level of protection, for Mexico most of all. If we had tried to develop by having the British finance our factories for export to the Home County, and employment was so bad and ill-paying that we had to cross over the border to get a decent job, we’d be in Mexico’s place: selling drugs to rich people in surrounding countries, swimming the river to find some work. The worst thing about conservatism is the voodoo economics.
